My Little Valentines & The Most Unfortunate Valentine Box Ever

by Kate on February 13th, 2012  |  5 Comments  |  Life

My children’s school is celebrating Valentine’s Day today. I have no idea why they celebrate today instead of tomorrow, but let’s just pretend it’s normal and go with it. I was proud of myself for actually being on the ball and ordering the kids coordinating Valentine’s shirts last month. And, as it turns out Amy likes them, too, because she included the LOVE shirt from Kiddy Up in the Handmade Valentine’s Day post.

Here are my little Valentines!

My poor daughter has the worst runny nose in the history of preschool runny noses and her skin is so irritated under her nose. I’m kicking myself for not making an extra run to Target to get Boogie Wipes days ago. If I ever doubted whether they’re worth the money, these pictures are proof that, yes, sensitive little kid skin deserves more than crappy tissues. And, she already had her hat and gloves on and didn’t want to take them off for pictures. ::sigh::

Valentine Box

Now, the kids in my son’s class were tasked with making a box to collect their Valentines. I, being the queen of not-crafty, thought we’d wrap a shoe box in paper, hand over some stickers and markers and let him decorate his box. And then I spent some time on Pinterest and realized this was the epitome of lame and, perhaps, crappy mothering. Oh well. It got worse when I got out the supplies and realized I’d lost the Valentine stickers I bought specifically for this purpose. Cutting and gluing pictures from magazines would have to do.

My son took the lead on his Valentine box and the result is…. special.

PIN THIS VALENTINE BOX, MAMAS!

If, for some reason, you can’t decipher his drawings, that’s a cut out heart, a flower and a dinosaur. Duh.

Let’s call the Valentine Box theme “eclectic”. The top has hearts, one side has a photo of sports chocolate balls, another has Easter egg chocolates, and one side even has an orange background with pink “hair” and hearts.

I’m happy to report that he was VERY proud of his box today at school and didn’t seem to notice that it was, um, different from many of his classmates.

Valentine Cards

What we lacked in craftiness on the Valentine box (a lot), we made up for in awesomeness of Valentines to give to friends.

Inspired by this Have a Ball Valentine, I called upon the talents of Tacy at Paper Nook to make little Valentine gift bags. She made bags last year and they were a hit so I knew I wanted her to make Valentines for my son again this year.

Each bag read “This Valentine’s Day Have a Ball” and contained a bouncy ball and some chocolate sports balls. I hope they’re a hit with his classmates today!

My daughter is handing out the custom “I’m a Sucker for You” Valentines from Minted.

Whether you create handmade classroom Valentines, decorate the most beautiful Valentine box ever, or do the best you can (like we did!), we hope your kids have a wonderful Valentine’s Day!

Valentine Card Crafts

by Shannon on February 11th, 2012  |  5 Comments  |  Crafts with Kids, Life

‘ve created monsters. Crafting monsters, that is. Preschool girl can sit for hours with paper, scissors and glue. Toddler boy is perfecting his scissor skills with our Faber Castell “My First Scissors” and, when he gets his sticky little hands on it, will tuck the bottle of glue like a football and run.

There was never a question that we would make Valentines for exchange at their preschool. However, I have to admit that I was lacking inspiration for this year’s cards until reading Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond. As I was reading, I saw that Mouse makes Dog a valentine with all their friends drawn from heart bases.

I started thinking of all the animals we could make from hearts. And because I’m lazy, I knew I would use my heart craft punch. And because I’m cheap, I knew I would get all the colored paper for these animals from the paint samples at the home improvement store. I nabbed green for alligators, brown for monkeys, gray for elephants, pink for flamingos, yellow for ducks, etc.

From there, I just had to come up with cute sayings. Here are two I made for toddler boy’s class:

In addition to the hearts, I drew a few lines and added some eyes. You could also make other animals with the expressions “I’m not LION, you’re my valentine!”, “Valentine, OWL love you forever!”, or “You’re the CAT’s meow, my sweet valentine!”

I also thought of a cute card for preschool girl’s classmates using the heart craft punch and paint samples:

She decided to go another direction.

That’s a flamingo holding a valentine. I absolutely love her cards better than mine!

It’s not too late for you and your child to make valentines; you just have to survive the glare of the home improvement store employees.

Fun & Personalized Classroom Valentines from Minted

by Kate on January 27th, 2012  |  5 Comments  |  Life, Shopping

If you spend any amount of time on Pinterest then you know that Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching. I’ve seen more than my fair share of adorable, custom homemade Valentines. But, let’s be honest, we don’t all have the time, skill or energy to make those paper marvels for an entire classroom. Never fear, craft-challenged mamas! Minted is here with a fabulous selection of classroom Valentine’s Day cards so you can get the unique, custom card you’re looking for without the drama.

Personalized Classroom Valentines

The collection of Minted classroom Valentines can be personalized from a simple adding your child’s name in the “From” spot to adding their sweet little face on the card. Take a look at some of my favorites.

They’re all great, aren’t they?

Valentine + Lollipop = Fab Classroom Valentine

One of my favorite aspect of those clever homemade Valentines is when they incorporates a little treat. So I was immediately smitten when I saw the I’m a Sucker card because the design includes a space to attach a, you guessed it, sucker. My daughter will be handing out this sweet little sentiment to her classmates with a heart lollipop sucker attached.

I changed the personalization just a bit since her school requests cards are not attached to specific children – makes it easier to distribute come party day.

Here’s the original I’m a Sucker design

And here’s the proof of my daughter’s customized card:

I can’t wait for her to hand them out!

Shop! Order custom classroom Valentines for your tot from Minted by February 7 to receive in time for Valentine’s Day! Prices start at $15 for 16 cards, but the larger quantity you order the less the cost per card.

Thanks to Minted for providing samples.

Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas: Heart-Themed Gifts (That Won’t Make You Gag)

by Shannon on January 24th, 2012  |  5 Comments  |  Life, Shopping

I love Valentine’s Day. It’s a holiday between Christmas and warm weather. It’s the perfect holiday for February…one that allows you to snuggle with your special someone. I give the holiday a great deal of thought because it also happens to be my birthday. Great thought? Yes. I give the holiday great thought because I want to make it special for my husband as well. It’s his Valentine’s Day, too!

Because I give the holiday great thought, I’ve come up with three lists of suggested gifts. To follow my train of thought and see the first installment of these lists, view my first Valentine’s gift post: Non-Heart Valentine’s Gift Ideas.

Here are some wonderful (i.e. not cheesy) heart-themed gifts. Hurry, time is running out!

Heart-Themed Gifts for Everyone

Conversation Heart Cookies from Etsy ($25 for one dozen)

Personalized Framed “Our Song” Lyrics from Etsy ($70) – Dang, there are no lyrics to “our song.” Hope others can use this!

Heart Coffee Scoop from Uncommon Goods ($24) – When the recipient loves you and coffee, this pewter coffee scoop is perfect.

Valentine’s Day the Movie (from $4.99) – Whether your special someone loves Valentine’s Day or hates it, there is a character to which they can relate in this movie. It might be cliche’, but this is a great movie for the occasion. (It saved me last year when my hubby was deployed…yeah, on my birthday.)

Heart-Themed Gifts for Mom

Gianna Rose Atelier Heart Soap Set at Pottery Barn ($29 for 3) –  My absolute favorite. Give this to your wife, mother, girlfriend, sister, aunt, daughter…NOW! On a budget? These come in a set of three. Buy one set and gift your mom, wife and daughter with one purchase.

Heart Parade Bracelet at Sundance ($98) – I saw this bracelet and knew it would be a recommendation on this list. Since that time, I’ve seen it on every online Sundance advertisement. So, it may be overkill, but I still think this would be a wonderful gift for mom.

Williams-Sonoma Heart Wreath ($59.95) –  This will look good, smell amazing and help mom to relax.

Peruvian Blue Opal Bracelet from Etsy ($68) –  Still a heart, but stepping outside of the traditional Valentine’s Day color palette, this beautiful bracelet will add a pop of color to any outfit.

Happy shopping. Or hint-leaving.

Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas: Hold the Hearts

by Shannon on January 23rd, 2012  |  5 Comments  |  Life, Shopping

My birthday is on Valentine’s Day. Sounds really sweet, right? Well, it is now that I have a loving husband and preschool girl who loves all things pink, red and “love” inspired. I try not to dwell on the years during high school and college when I did not have a boyfriend and all my friends did. Those years when, on the most romantic day of the year AND my birthday, I planned on a Stouffer’s lasagna and piece of birthday cake from the local grocery store. Come to think of it, that lasagna and cake was really good, so never mind the “woe is me.”

During those years, I did not like receiving any birthday gifts that were heart-themed. I’m not sure I really ever told anyone about my preference because I wouldn’t want to hurt feelings. I mean, a gift is thoughtful no matter what. Since that time, I’ve tried to keep in mind that some people LOVE the LOVE stuff and some people might like a romantic gesture that can be savored and enjoyed for more than one day in February. As I began to think about Valentine gift suggestions for The Shopping Mama, that meant two lists. So how did I end up with three lists of Valentine gift suggestions?

1) Non-heart-themed gifts
2) Heart-themed gifts
3) Gifts for the kids

Can’t forget the kiddos!

Then, I struggled more. This is The Shopping Mama…moms are our primary audience. Hmmm….if I post a lot of gifts for moms, how do I get that information to the dads and significant others to make the purchase? That led to another set of lists. 1) Gifts for Anyone. 2) Gifts for Mom that she will “pin” on her Pinterest page and direct others there for gift ideas. This is getting complicated.

For this post, I’ll share the non-heart-themed gifts, so tune in for heart-themed and kid gifts later!

Non Heart Themed Gifts for Anyone

West Elm Chunky Tassel Throw ($79) – Perhaps you give this with the promise to cuddle under it?

Cheesecake Factory Godiva Chocolate Cheesecake (from $24) – Don’t live near a Cheesecake Factory? Not to fret. They deliver.

Paper to Silk Journal at Uncommon Goods ($32) – This amazing journal can be used for those early in their marriage or those reflecting on years past. Prompts for the year correspond to the traditional gift for that anniversary and truly make you interact, communicate and remember.

Penny Keychain from Etsy ($15) – This keepsake is handmade from pennies coined during memorable years for you and your significant other.

Non-Heart Theme Gifts for Mom

Dylan’s Candy Bar Rhinestone Necklace ($35) & Bracelet ($40)- Like candy, but can’t afford the calories? How about an accessory from the popular candy vendor, whose founder happens to be Ralph Lauren’s daughter?

L’Occitane Hand Creme Bouquet ($40) – Mom works hard and winter is hard on the hands. Treat mom to a bouquet of hand creme scents. Want extra credit? Pair it with a gift certificate for a manicure and/or a bouquet of real flowers.

Anthropologie New Angle Sunglasses ($38) – Mom is a superstar, let her look like one with these amazing glasses.

Personalized Stationary on Etsy ($15) – Give mom a truly personal gift that will help her with the “household professional communication” – custom stationary featuring her monogram and favorite colors.

Happy shopping and happy pinning!

Handmade Valentines for Kids Using FREE Stuff

by Shannon on February 14th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Crafts with Kids

Editor’s Note: Shannon prepared this post a good two weeks ago, and I (Kate) totally dropped the ball and didn’t post it. You might think it’s too late to do a Valentine’s craft but I think this post is too cute not to share. Shannon, please forgive me! – Kate

I’m a teacher = I’m always looking for free stuff.  For years, I’ve had a fascination with paint sample cards.  How can I use them in my classroom, as gift tags, in my children’s birthday parties, as artwork?  The staff at my local big box hardware store always dreads my arrival. They know they will have to restock the sample shelves after I leave.

As I desperately sought an easy-peasy Valentine for my daughter to create and give her classmates, it occurred to me that with a simple heart craft punch and some paint samples she could create hearts of all sizes and colors.  For this project we used:

  • paint sample cards in all colors, but you could easily pick a color scheme and stick with it
  • a single heart punch and a multi-size heart punch
  • card stock with matching envelopes
  • glue.

Glue the  punched hearts to a flat card with matching envelope and, voila!  (Then spend the next half hour picking hearts off the floor and vacuuming!)  It’s really so simple and utterly adorable that they made the cards all by themselves.

Preschool girl and her best friend made 30 Valentine greetings in no time.  They had fun punching out the hearts, dotting the glue, and putting the hearts on the cards.  They’re old enough to add their name and a message, but even small children can make this homemade Valentine for Grandma!
