Emily Press Label Packs – Perfect for Camp & School (Review & Giveaway)

by Kate on May 31st, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways, Reviews, Reviews, Spring Into Spring

I think as soon as kids grow old enough to participate in programs outside the home, moms realize the true benefit of labeling. Lots and lots of labeling. But, not all labels are created equal. Emily Press Labels are designed with moms and tots in mind and offer stylish, durable labels that are perfect for camps, school and general OCD-ness.

About Emily Press Labels

After a futile search to find durable yet stylish labels for her nieces and nephews, Maureen set out to design her own labels that would be fun and fashionable as well as stay stuck on their belongings. With her previous experience working for Robeez Footwear, she jumped at the opportunity to start her own creative business with kids and big kids in mind. That’s when Emily Press Labels was born.

Trendy color palettes, playful characters and fashionable designs are the essence of Emily Press Labels. The collections of stylish, functional and durable sticky labels speaks to modern kids, hip youths and savvy grown-ups.

Kids Camp Label Pack

We are moving in the middle of the summer, but both before and after the move my son will attend some fun new schools. First and staring this week(!), my little guy will go to Zoo Camp. He’s beyond thrilled, of course, and we have the ideal labels to make sure he comes home with everything I pack in his bag in the morning. The Emily Press Camp Labels pack is up to the task. The pack contains 129 labels in FIVE different shapes that are appropriate for everything your child can possibly need.

  • Popular dishwasher safe labels for water bottles & food containers
  • Slim dishwasher safe labels for toiletries & flashlights
  • Tag-a-Tag™ peel & stick labels for clothing & linens
  • Shoe labels for hiking boots, sneakers & water shoes
  • Large waterproof labels for sleeping bags & backpacks

I personalized the Jungle Scene and the process is super simple. You enter your child’s name, color choice if applicable, pick an icon and then preview the design. When the finished product arrived I was surprised by the cool packaging. (see below) It’s so clever and keeps the labels in good condition. The quality of the labels is great – they’re thick and look very cute. I think my favorite thing, though, is that each page describes the labels on that sheet and what they’re best suited for.

I’ve labeled up a bunch of my son’s goodies so he’s prepared for camp this week. My favorite labels are the Shoe Labels. Aren’t they clever? (I distorted the photo a little bit but so rest assured the printed labels are clear and easy to read.)

Another great option for the summer, particularly for sleepaway camp for older kids and day care for younger tots, is the new Emily Press Clothing Labels. The Clothing Pack has an assortment of laundry safe labels – including iron-ons, my favorite Shoe Labels and peel and stick Tag-a-Tag labels.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… Emily Press labels are very high quality – the difference is obvious as soon as you feel them. There’s a nice variety to choose from and the labels are easily customized. And, really, you can’t beat the cool packs that contain multiple shapes and sizes for different uses.

Or Not to Buy… The Camp Set is best suited for sleepaway camp but I have no doubt we’ll use all the labels before the year is out.

Shop! The Emily Press Camp Labels pack is $47.95. If you prefer one particular shape or size, check out the Sticky Label options.

Win! Emily Press Camp Labels Pack!

Faber-Castell Creative Studio Review + Giveaway

by Shannon on May 25th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Crafts with Kids, For Mama, Giveaways, Reviews

Quick! How many companies, businesses or organizations can you think of that have been around for 250 years? That’s right, how many have been in business since 1761? If you’re like me, you have trouble thinking of any. That’s almost as old as our country and yet, artist supply company Faber-Castell is celebrating their 250th anniversary this year. What an accomplishment!

What does it take to stay in business that long? QUALITY. Always a supplier of quality materials for the serious artist, Faber-Castell now offers products for kids, crafters and amateur artists as well. The Creative Studio line features award-winning products for the budding artist and crafter, including the Watercolor Button Blossoms. This kit won the Informal Education Products Product of the Year designation and comes with all the materials and instruction you’ll need to make beautiful paper flowers.

The kit contains: Aquarelle pencils, Multimark pen, buttons, chenille stems, wire stems, florist tape, watercolor paper, craft glue, pencil sharpener, paintbrush, flower sample and 36-page illustrated instruction booklet.

Crafting with Watercolor Button Blossoms

I now feel it is time for two confessions: 1) I love crafts. 2) I am not an artist.

But when I started using the Aquarelle watercolor pencils to make my flower creations, I felt like I could create a masterpiece. These pencils are firm for easy use, sharpen easily and when water is applied, turn into a watercolor affect.

Red and yellow watercolor pencil line drawings

When water is applied with a paintbrush, the lines soften and colors blend.

I hesitate to show my flower creation from this point on because the instruction booklet that comes with the kit provides copious information about color and flower design, I went a “different way” with my first flower and it doesn’t do the kit or materials justice.

The instruction booklet tells you to color both sides of the watercolor paper so that your flower will look more realistic. I chose to keep mine white thinking it would look “modern”. Ummm, yeah.

You know that you are “craft challenged” when your four-year-old daughter makes a great flower just by looking at the pictures on the box and in the booklet. Sigh. I am humbled.

Did you notice the button center of my flower? Those cute little black dots were made with the Faber-Castell Multimark Pen. I’ve never encountered anything like this pen. It’s a permanent marker with the finest point. Correction, it’s a permanent marker on some surfaces. On others, you can erase! The Multimark pen is very popular in other markets and is available in black or a pack of eight varying colors.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… Founded in Germany, Faber-Castell is now headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio and has introduced many new product lines including Creativity for Kids, Design*Memory*Craft and Design Studio. If you’re a crafter, many of the Faber-Castell products or kits will provide quality tools for completing your project. The permanent marker pen and watercolor pencils provided in this kit are remarkable tools.

Or Not to Buy… Your first flower, like mine, may not be perfect. Though the instruction manual provides VERY detailed information about color and craft, this is a product that may take some time to master.

Shop! The Faber-Castell Watercolor Button Blossoms kit, which retails for $24.95, and other products are available at Faber Castell USA online and Amazon.

Win! A Faber-Castell Creative Studio Watercolor Button Blossoms Set!

TwirlyGirl Trapeze Dress Review + TwirlyGirl Dress Giveaway

by Kate on May 24th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Clothes, Giveaways, Reviews, Spring Into Spring

I know it’s not a news flash to tell you that shopping for girls clothes is often way more fun than shopping for boys clothes. TwirlyGirl dresses are a perfect example of why that is true. The clothes are pure girly girl with dresses designed to maximize the twirl factor. TwirlyGirl was founded when Cynthia Jamin wanted to create the perfect dress for her daughters. The result was the The Original Reversible Twirly Dress™ by TwirlyGirl®.

Trapeze Dress

Trapeze Dress is light as air – fun to wear

  • Each dress comes with a silky, soft Bandana or Headband
  • Made from silky, soft poly sateen – machine washable/tumble dry
  • Stylish and vibrant prints make this the perfect Summer dress

My daughter has been spinning herself silly in the Trapeze Dress from TwirlyGirl. As my daughter grows more opinionated about what she wears I find myself breathing a sigh of relief when she reaches for something we can both agree on. She likes the Trapeze Dress because it fits her princess-dress requirement, feels silky and is super-fun for twirling. (In fact, she likes it so much the first time she wore it she insisted on wearing it to bed. I don’t recommend this but I still let her do it.) I like it because she looks put together and adorable in one easy to clean and wear dress.

I also love that the Trapeze – and all TwirlyGirl dresses – look unique and special. The bright fabric combinations and unusual patterns and dress shape definitely stand out in a crowd. And, on the super practical side, TwirlyGirl also offers UnderTwirls – simply the best under skirt shorts to cover underpants. Twirl away with no care in the world, girls!

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… Your little girly girl will simply shine in a TwirlyGirl dress. My daughter is thrilled every time she gets to wear the Trapeze Dress. I like the bright colors and the easy care of the dress.

Or Not to Buy… TwirlyGirl dresses are specialty pieces and the price tag reflects that.

Shop! The Trapeze dress from TwirlyGirl is $57 (includes a matching headband) and is available in a number of colors. The The Original Reversible Twirly Dress™ by TwirlyGirl® is $74. Creativity for Kids My First Scissors Kit (Review + Giveaway)

by Shannon on May 19th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Crafts with Kids, Giveaways, Reviews, Spring Into Spring

Who Says Creativity Can’t Come in a Box?

Someone recently asked me, “So what is your daughter into?” You know that question. It means, with what fictional character is your child infatuated at the moment. In the past, I’ve been able to say Little Einsteins, Curious George or Fancy Nancy. However, this time the question stumped me because, at the moment, she has no fascination with anything… other than markers, paper, scissors, glue and tape. Oh, the tape. You know the phrase, “Don’t lend money to family, you have to give it and never expect it back”? That’s the philosophy I use when I give my daughter a roll of tape. I don’t get it back with any tape left on the roll.

So, I think it is fair to say that preschool girl is “in to” paper crafts. Even if your child is not currently involved in paper crafts, the award-winning Creativity for Kids My First Scissors Kit might change that.

My First Scissors Kit

This kit comes with a unique pair of left or right-handed scissors that are ergonomically designed for small hands that are still developing fine motor skills. Though, the recommended age range for the scissors is 4-94, I know my preschool girl could have used them earlier with adult supervision. The fact that they look like a toucan on the box is a bonus! My preschool girl has been working with scissors for a while, so when I asked if she liked the “bird scissors” (the Creativity for Kids) or the “safety scissors” (her small scissors) better, she responded with, “the bird scissors are much easier to use!”

As a parent who struggles to come up with creative ideas for crafts, I love the other parts of this kit just as much as the scissors. The kit contains:

  • ergonomically-designed scissors
  • preprinted paper in animal designs
  • glue stick
  • googly eyes
  • card stock for mounting your child’s masterpiece
  • chenille thread for hanging your child’s masterpiece
  • instructions for assembling a variety of jungle animals (instructions so simple, a child can use them!)

The genius behind the paper provided is that there are pre-printed cutting instructions on the back that correspond with the animal print on the front.

Your child can simply cut along the dotted line and, when done has the pieces to assemble their jungle animal with the glue stick and mounting board provided in the kit.

With the addition of googly eyes, the animal comes to life!

Over the course of several days, I found preschool girl returning to her animal crafts and working independently.  So far, she has created a bear, lion, tiger, giraffe and hippopotamus.  I expect her to keep returning to this project until all the animals are ready for display.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The Faber-Castell My First Scissors kit provides all the materials necessary for your child to bring paper animals to life. For older preschool children, they can work independently and build self-confidence. For younger children, this is an excellent opportunity for parent/child interaction and studying jungle animals. Because the kit comes with enough paper materials for 10 animals, it is the perfect craft for a jungle or animal-themed birthday party.

Or Not To Buy.. I must admit, a large part of the attraction to this kit is that it comes with all the materials necessary to complete the project in one convenient spot. Do I have colored paper? Yes. Do I have googly eyes? Yes. Do I have glue sticks? Yes. Could I look up patterns for animal cutouts and prepare paper for my child? Yes. If you have all of those items as well, you may choose to embark on a similar project without the kit.

Shop! To shop Faber-Castell’s large selection of children’s art supplies and craft kits, including the My First Scissors kit which retails for $15.99, visit their Creativity for Kids site. You should also visit the art gallery, comprised of children’s art submissions to get some good ideas for summer craft projects.

Win! Creativity for Kids My First Scissors Kit!

Little One Books: Spring into Spring Review + Giveaway

by Kate on May 17th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways, Reviews, Spring Into Spring

It’s no secret that all of us here at The Shopping Mama love shopping for, reading and sharing great children’s books. Buying books for my kids is always a no-guilt, feel good mission that makes the whole family happy. Little One Books offers a well-curated, thoughtful selection of books (and more) for kids.

About Little One Books

We specialize in quality books, music, and video, for children birth through age five, and have personally reviewed and selected each and every item in our store. You’ll find detailed information on why we prefer a particular product in our “Why We Chose” section of each product page.
At Little One Books, we match each product to what we believe is the youngest appropriate age group. However, our carefully selected items can and will be used for many years to come. As children develop they often find pleasure in revisiting illustrations from old favorites, and eventually learning to read them on their own.

One Watermelon Seed

As the end of the school year nears and summer approaches, One Watermelon Seed is a great choice. The book is about gardening – a great spring and summer family activity – but also incorporates numbers and lots of counting.

One Watermelon Seed Synopsis

In this deceptively simple counting book, Max and Josephine tend their garden while readers follow along, counting from one to ten as the garden is planted. Then readers can count in groups of tens as the garden is harvested, while they search through the pictures for the many small animals that are hiding throughout. A concise and clever text introduces color and rhythm, and the illustrations are bright and engaging, making this a perfect counting book.

The bright, fun colors of the growing garden is a fun backdrop for the basic number skills your child will gather from reading the book. I think One Watermelon Seed is solely responsible for the fact that my son learned to count by tens – a skill introduced in the book – and that he now boasts he can count to a thousand. While he may be exaggerating a lot little, the book definitely did introduce a new math and counting concept. And, frankly, if a fun to reach children’s book can help me to teach or reinforce a math skill, this totally math-challenged mama will take it.

Children’s Books for the Summer

The Little One Books shopping experience is easy because the books are categorized by age group so you can target your search to books for your children. I searched the preschool aged books to find some other books to reinforced educational ideas while your tots are on a break from the rigors of pre-K.

Alphabet City: Letters aren’t found only in books, they’re everywhere around us. Take a tour of Alphabet City, and soon you’ll be seeing letters in the unlikeliest places.

Can You Count Ten Toes?: In this dynamic counting book you can learn to count in ten different languages: Spanish, French, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Tagalog, Russian, Hindi, Hebrew, and even Zulu.

Alphabet Explosion! Search & Count from Alien to Zebra: 18 things in this book begin with the letter “A,” 19 start with “H,” and there are 37 ways of counting “S.” Can you find them all?

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… Whether you’re well-versed in children’s literature or not, shopping Little One Books is easy and guarantees you’ll purchase a good book for a young child. I appreciate that the  thoughtful collection of books, like One Watermelon Seed, is organized by age and includes a blurb on why they chose to sell each one.

Or Not to Buy… Little One Books focuses on books for babies and children from birth to five years. I’d love to see the collection expanded to include older kids, too.

Shop! One Watermelon Seed is $19.95, and the prices for other books vary. Books are always a great book for kids, and Little One Books offers great Gift Bundles that offer the perfect combination of books, movies and music.

Win! $30 Gift Certificate to Little One Books!

How to Enter: Visit Little One Books and check out the great selection. Leave a comment with another book you’d love to read with your child.

Bonus Entries – valid only after completing the first required entry. Please leave a separate comment for each you do.

Serena & Lily World Repair Kit: Review + Giveaway

by Monica on May 16th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways, Life, Reviews, Spring Into Spring

Serena & Lily is a wonderful brand of home decor for babies, children and the family alike. They also offer a wide assortment of interesting and unique toys, gifts, fabrics, decor and furniture for the home and your family.  I love getting the colorful catalog in the mail and seeing all of the new and exciting items.  One of the items I saw recently caught my eye. It is the World Repair Kit for kids. I was happy to learn more about it.  With a little guy getting older, it is important to me that I teach him about the world around him, both near and far; and I like this healthy and not overwhelming way to introduce him to some “heavier” topics.

About the World Repair Kit

  • Quick facts about environmental issues, conservation, protecting endangered species and more.
  • Hands-on ways to help those in need of food, shelter, clean water, education and health care.
  • Great ideas for volunteering, planning creative fundraisers and hosting World Repair Parties.
  • A Resource Guide connecting you to amazing non-profit organizations.
  • Everyday ways to find your passion and get inspired to be the best world citizen you can be!
  • 100% of net proceeds go to the Serena & Lily Foundation, funding youth initiatives around the world.

We’re Repairing the World

The World Repair Kit from Serena & Lily comes in a sturdy box with loads of goodies inside. There are a lot of little fun facts concerning world issues and places around the world. It also gives kids and families ideas for making a difference in their own communities. I love the stamps that accompany the guidebook so that kids can stamp the “Did it? Stamp it!” icon in the corner of the pages.  The main book is set up to look like a tour guide book, and is cleverly designed to help kids see that there is so much more to the world than what happens in their neighborhood or school, without being scary or intimidating. That said, I have a 3 year old, and most of this is pretty  far out of his league as far as what I am ready to have to explain to him (world hunger, malaria, etc.). But, there are also pages that I can share with him now such as “Find the good in everyone”, or “find your passion”. Concepts that I definitely want him to learn at an early age. The recommended age for this kit is 8+ and I think that is probably a good fit. I think this would be a fantastic gift for a child around that age!

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… I think this is a great gift idea for a elementary aged child. 100% of the net proceeds go to the Serena & Lily Foundation, which funds youth initiatives around the world, so it is a gift you can feel really good about.

Or Not to Buy… The only reason I can think of not to purchase this is if your kiddos are still babies, you aren’t ready for this kit. But you will be before you know it, and it is a wonderful way to help you kids learn about being an active global citizen.

Shop! Visit Serena & Lily and take a look at the World Repair Kit, which retails for  $24.95, as well as other fantastic decor and gift items. We also love the Serena & Lily Gypsy Tote, in particular.

Make Memories with GummyLump: Melissa & Doug Easel Review + Giveaway

by Kate on May 12th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways, Reviews, Spring Into Spring, Toys

GummyLump is an online toy store that features an awesome selection of Melissa and Doug products, special needs toys and high quality wooden toys that make sweet memories. One such product that is sure to delight kids (and please parents, too) is the awesome Melissa & Doug Easel. We received this wooden easel from GummyLump and one of you will WIN one, too.

Melissa & Doug Wooden Floor Easel

The Melissa & Doug Easel is the perfect way to inspire your artist! Generously sized chalk board and dry erase boards are perfect for projects large and small. Easel folds ups easily for convenient storage and features a colorful paint tray with cup holders. Has an easy loading paper roll holder and an extra large tray for holding erasers; chalk and clips. Paper cutting edge at top of easel means clean paper cuts for your artists work! 4 large clips included.

I have to admit that I wasn’t sure how much use this would actually get in our home. I knew it would be great quality, as I’ve come to expect from Melissa & Doug, but I just didn’t know how my kids would use it. My son even has a Tabletop Easel but has never used it all that much and it’s currently in our basement. Well, I don’t see the Floor Easel leaving it’s place of importance in the play room any time soon. My kids love this easel and stop by to scribble on it at least once a day.

If you haven’t gathered by now, I’m not the most creative or artistic mama out there. (Thank goodness for Shannon!) Honestly, until this easel I had to get the crayons and coloring books out of a cupboard for the kids. Seems silly, doesn’t it? Now, the Easel is stocked with a roll of paper on one side, large coloring pages are clipped to the other and the trays are filled with crayons and colored pencils. The kids can literally walk up, draw for a bit and then continue on their business. And, when I get brave I can get out the smocks and fill the trays with paint for some serious arts and crafts.

The Floor Easel was easy to put together and consists primarily of tightening screws with large plastic nut. One of the great features is that the Easel grows with your child and has three height options. Our Easel is set on the lowest of three heights and is easily accessible by my 2 and 4 year old. If you have kids of varying ages and size, you can have one side of the Easel up higher than the other to accommodate both.

My littlest artist at work.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The Easel is a great addition to our play room – it grants my kids the opportunity to be creative and express themselves whenever they want. If you don’t want to use it all the time, it does fold up for smaller storage. Another great feature is that the Easel height adjusts to grow with your children.

Or Not to Buy… In the several weeks we’ve been using this, I have yet to find a complaint or improvement. If anything, I do wish it came with a roll of paper.

Shop! The Melissa & Doug Wooden Floor Easel has a suggested retail price of $79.99, but is available for only $63.99 at GummyLump.

Win! Melissa & Doug Wooden Floor Easel from GummyLump!

How to Enter: Visit GummyLump.com and check out the amazing selection of toys. Leave a comment with something else your tots would enjoy.

Bonus Entries – valid only after completing the first required entry. Please leave a separate comment for each you do.
