Or Not to Buy… The Not So Best of 2010

by Kate on January 2nd, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Reviews

In every review on The Shopping Mama we offer our favorite aspects of a product (Reasons “To Buy…”) and room for improvement (“Or Not to Buy…”). We are always honest and forthcoming in reviews, and if we have an overall negative opinion about something we won’t post about it. But the fact remains that no matter how often we use or vigorously test a product before writing a review opinions can change over time. So this is our list of products that fall into the “Or Not to Buy…” category for the year. In other words, after some use and reflection they need some improvement before we can wholeheartedly recommend them.

Moon Dough. Oh dear. I must have been having a really good day when I wrote this review. Admittedly, my kids LOVE the stuff. They would play with it every day if given the option, but I won’t let them. Because clean up is a NIGHTMARE. It’s just too light and flakes everywhere and makes a total mess. This is NOT the same as Moon Sand and despite the fact that it does not dry out (and Play Doh does), I’d buy Play Doh any day over this. Taking the time to clean up and put Play Doh in a container pales in comparison to the time you spend sweeping, vacuuming and cleaning Moon Dough.

Tommee Tippee Cups. In the initial review I indicated a problem with one of the four cups we received leaking from the seam between the top and the cup itself. Eventually, after a month or two of use, every single cup leaked from between the top and the cup no matter how tightly screwed on. I was really disappointed. These cups had so much potential and didn’t leak from the spout like so many sippies, but they all ended up in the trash.

ZZZtime Snooze Wrap Plus. While I like the idea of this sleep swaddle, it just had too many hook and loop closures to figure out. With a tired, crying newborn, taking the time to latch this contraption up just didn’t seem worth it. -Monica

Tike Tech X3 All Terrain Stroller. This one pains me, but I have to add Tike Tech to the list. There is no spot for your child to place feet to avoid the front tire. My son was well below the weight limit when we used this stroller regularly and his feet just flopped about near the front tire – I was afraid he’d kick it or get his foot in it. And I’ve never had so much trouble assembling a stroller – and I’ve assembled a lot of strollers. Given the choice between this and the less expensive Joovy Zoom 360, my husband (the jogger) and I always choose the Joovy.

Do you have any products from 2010 to add to the “Or Not to Buy” List?

Best Baby Gift Ideas

by Kate on January 1st, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Baby, Baby Shopping Guide, Reviews

best kids clothes and shoes 2010In September, we assembled a very comprehensive Baby Shopping Guide with the best baby gear and gift ideas. It really is a great resource – and I’m not just saying that since I worked hours upon hours on it. But, as we’re routing up The Shopping Mama’s Best of 2010, we recognized several baby reviews that stood out and deserve special end of the year mention.

***

Clouds & Stars Quick Zip Crib Sheet. This thing is so awesomely smart and makes changing crib sheets a breeze. I should know, I’ve cleaned the sheet and crib mattress THREE TIMES this week since my daughter discovered she can remove her diaper. (And, because I apparently have short term memory loss and sometimes forget to put a onesie on her.)

***

Baby Signing Time Baby Shower Bundle. An awesome resource to learn the basics to truly communicate with your little guy. I didn’t take the DVDs on Christmas vacation and I don’t know who missed them more – me or my son. -Malia

***

tiny giraffe blocks. If you’re stuck for an original, affordable and absolutely cute baby gift, this is it. The blocks are handmade featuring bright and modern or vintage patterns, and can be personalized. The result is perfection.

***

Infantino Jumbo Wheel Play Space. I love using this colorful P lay Space for my infant daughter because it was washable, and I always had a nice space to put her to to stay occupied. It would stay in place which was perfect for my reflux daughter and protected my new carpet. -Monica

Most Stylish Kids Clothes: Tea Collection. We started the year with about 3 pieces of Tea in my son’s drawer. We’re ending it with about 25 pieces between my kids. The clothes are beautifully made, great for day-to-day wear but also look amazing for “dress up” occasions.

***

Cutest Tutu Shirts: Tutu Pour Mon Deux. Completely customizable and totally cute, these tutu shirts are great gifts and tons of fun.

***

Coolest Boy Clothes: Baby Eggi. You won’t find any chubby dogs or cute duckies on these clothes and that’s why we like them. Rather, you’ll find cool graphics that are kid-friendly but pleasing to the grown-up eye.

***

Best Personalized Kids Clothing: The Funky Bee. Unique designs, funky and modern fabrics and top-notch quality. And, really, the sky’s the limit – if you can imagine a design, Jenny can make it for you. You’re welcome for the introduction. (You’ll thank us later.)

***

Super Styling Kids Shoes: Livie + Luca. The leather is divine, the colors are bright, the designs are genius… these shoes are awesome. We reviewed a pair of sandals in February that my son still tries to wear despite freezing temperatures and I have since bought two pairs pictured in the review.

***

Best Baby Shoes: Jemos Shoes. Adorable and amazing quality. We’ve recently been testing the shoes by crawling on rough patio stones (like sand paper) and you can’t even tell. That’s good stuff. -Malia

***

Best Discount Kids Clothes Shopping: Zulily. Not only is Zulily a great way to buy deeply discounted clothes, but it’s also a very fun way to learn about new brands. The shipping is quick and customer service is good. I pretty much *heart* Zulily.

Coolest Talking Toys: Dinosaur Train Interaction Toys. The toys talk to each other. Seriously. Enough said.

Best Tricycle: Smart Trike 3-in-1. The design, ease of use and number of miles you’ll log on the Smart Trike before outgrowing its usefulness is amazing. It’s just so, well, smart. (And, we may be giving one away very soon.)

***

Best Baby / Toddler Walker: Melissa & Doug’s Chomp and Clack. Considering one of those plastic walkers? Don’t. Go for the best. This is just as (if not more) interactive, the quality is impeccable and my son loves it. And, really, what’s NOT to love? -Malia

***

Best Play Kitchen: KidKraft Vintage Play Kitchen. If you could blow this up and make it my size, I’d happily use it to cook dinner every night. This little Play Kitchen is so pretty and your kids will love it so much that you won’t even mind another piece of kid furniture taking over your house.

***

Best Game Your Toddler Can Actually Play: Avalanche Fruit Stand. The rules are simple enough for your child to understand, but the act of playing will improve hand-eye coordination. The game goes quickly and is  great way to take some time to sit and play as a family.

***

Toy You Won’t Want to Share with Your Kids: Tegu Blocks. There’s a reason the Tegu website features streaming video of a Tegu master building things with these blocks… they are super addictive and very fun. Yes, your child will get the benefits of open-ended play and building skills, but you will also get to exercise your play muscle.

We hope you are enjoying The Shopping Mama’s Best of 2010 series. Check back tomorrow for our favorite clothes for kids.

Best Products for Moms 2010

by Kate on December 30th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  For Mama, Reviews

The kids gear doesn’t get all the fun in TSM Best of 2010! This list is all about the best products for moms. These are things we love, use every day and, frankly, don’t want to live without.

***

Best Tool for Crafts: Silhouette Digital Craft Cutter. So versatile, so easy to use. It will change your life. And you think so, too, since it is the most popular giveaway of the year on The Shopping Mama. - Amy

***

Helps Us Keep House: Dyson. I don’t even like to vacuum and this remains one of my favorite reviews of the year. It’s just so cool. And, I guess it’s rather important to mention that one quick run of the floor with this and my house looks clean despite the fact that I live with a 4 and 2 year old.

***

Best Wall Decor: Hi There Press Canvas. What mom doesn’t love to show off your little one? Why settle for a dingy print in a frame your kids will likely break when you can get a gorgeous personalized museum-worthy canvas? - Shannon

***

Most Wearable Fashion: Smitten. I’m easily overwhelmed by the latest fashions, and Smitten manages to balance looking totally on trend without being intimidating.

***

Best Nursing Bra: Basics by Bravado and Bravado Bliss. I raved about the Basics by Bravado line for Target in February and I meant it. I am still wearing my Emma Nursing Sleep Bra every single night. (And I stopped nursing in July.) Sadly, these are hard to find, but luckily the entire Bravado! line is awesome. My second favorite is the Bliss Nursing Bra (pictured below) – it’s like heaven for your boobs.

***

Best Diaper Bag: Serena & Lily Prague Gypsy Tote. I have come to love this messenger style bag for a few reasons. The first being it fits anything you would ever need. The other reason is when I wear it messenger style, I can move it around to my back when I am wrestling the kids out of their car seats and it isn’t constantly falling off my shoulder. Oh, and it looks AMAZING. - Monica

***

Our Other Favorite Diaper Bag: OiOi Shopper Tote. This has been my day to day bag since the moment it arrived last January. It’s easy to use, looks great and has help up amazingly well to sippy cups, spills, and every other hurdle my children provide.

Best Stroller of 2010: Britax B-READY. This has really become my family’s go-to stroller. The kids love it, I love to push it, and people love to look at it. With or without the Second Seat (as pictured), it’s a great stroller.

***

Best High Chair of 2010: Joovy Nook. The more I use it, the more I love it. Now that we’re living near family, I fold and toss this in the trunk and take it to my parents for dinner at least once a week. And, the price tag is so reasonable you’ll think it’s a misprint.

***

Best Toddler Boost at the Dinner Table: KABOOST. So genius, you know it was invented by a parent. It’s easy to use, flexible to fit almost any chair and gets your tot up to the table. Now if only it taught table manners, too…

***

Best Baby Carrier: Petunia Pickle Bottom Sightseer. Besides the fact that this is the prettiest carrier out there, it truly is the easiest one to slip on and off. I never felt like I had to stop and “think” about it like other carriers. - Monica

***

Best Bigger Baby / Toddler Carrier: ERGO. You really can’t go wrong with the original ERGO or the new ERGObaby Performance. Both are comfortable, user-friendly and a great investment.

***

Make Travel Easier: KidCo PeaPod. Whether you’re headed to the beach, the park or grandma’s house, the PeaPod will be your baby’s friend. You can fold it up so small you won’t even know it’s there. Until you need it and then you’ll be so happy you have it.
