Design Your Own Monster: CurlyQ Cuties Review + Discount

2 Comments 11 March 2010

curlyqcutiesCurlyQ Cuties is, quite possibly, the coolest plush toy company ever. You design a monster – and pick everything from color to belly button – and they make it quickly and send it to you. Seriously cute (for a monster) and seriously fun.

About CurlyQ Cuties

  • We make your custom designed product specifically for you.
  • All of our products are made by hand in the United States of America.
  • You can embroider a name or message onto your purchase.
  • Our products are baby-safe–all details are permanently affixed.
  • Each product has its own unique serial number.
  • Our products are washable.

Design A Moggin

curlyq cuties moggin designI have to tell you that designing your monster is half the fun of CurlyQ Cuties . We designed a Custom Moggin and got to select 10 attributes including body shape, body color, face position, eye shape, eye color, nose shape, nose color, mouth shape, belly shape, and belly color. Yes, all of that! My son asked to do it over and over and over again and refers to the CurlyQ Cuties website as “the monster game”. We designed his Moggin, and then we designed a Moggin for his sister, and then he designed a Moggin for me… I think you get the idea. It’s really quite fun and extremely easy to do.

I let Preschool Boy have full creative control so he literally picked every detail of his Moggin. Isn’t it hysterical? I love that he picked the “Diva” eye for his monster. I think the Diva eye has a different meaning to a 3 year old because he just says his Moggin is “sweepy.”

We didn’t have to wait long to see my son’s creation, and, indeed, all monsters arrive within 10 days of being ordered. When the Moggin arrived it looked exactly like the image we created on the computer and the quality is top notch. Like all CurlyQ Cuties, our Moggin is made of anti-pill fleece and each embellishment is made of fleece and felt which are affixed and embroidered onto the monster. Preschool Boy loves his Moggin because he designed it and I love it because it truly is great quality and it’s certainly not your ordinary stuffed animal.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… CurlyQ Cuties are a great buy. The Basic Monster starts at just $25 – a terrific price for the ability to completely design your own, high quality plush toy. I think it’s a great option for a birthday gift and you can give a gift certificate so the recipient has the fun of designing their own.

Or Not to Buy… It’s hard to find fault with CurlyQ Cuties. The process is fun and the product exceeds expectations.

Shop! CurlyQ Cuties offer custom made to order monsters, Moggins, and adorable tooth fairy pillows. The Basic Moggin is $30, for more customization options the Deluxe Moggin is $40 and you can create a Double-Sided Moggin for $50. Use the code FRIEND for 5% off until March 31.

*New* Boppy Accessories Review & Giveaway

63 Comments 10 March 2010

boppy logoAs you know, I think the Boppy pillow is a must have baby product. Boppy recently introduced two new accessories to benefit mom and baby – The Newborn Booster and Protective Cover.

I am excited about the additions to an already great product, but my nursing kiddo has outgrown the Boppy. Luckily, my friend Monica who is breastfeeding her sweet little one month old daughter graciously stepped up to help me with another review. And, Boppy stepped up, too, and send her the two new accessories and the most adorable girly Boppy pillow cover (you can see it in the photos!).

Monica’s Experience

The day I got an email from Kate wondering if I would want to try out two new Boppy products, I had just gotten home from the pediatrician with my three week old. She has been diagnosed as having acid reflux, just as her older brother was two years ago. So when I saw the description of the products, and how the wedge could keep my daughter more on an angle during her feedings, I was sold! I actually remember saying to my husband when nursing my son two years ago, “Someone needs to invent something to do this for me.” Referring to my legs propped up under my Boppy while nursing to keep him on an incline. Well, Boppy did it!

boppy protective cover

The first product is the Protective Cover, a water resistant cover that fits under the Boppy cover. Think of it as a water resistant mattress pad for your Boppy. This is very important for a reflux baby, as the Boppy stays dry, reducing the amount of washings needed, and you just need to wash the cover if baby spits up. I was able to test it immediately, as spit up happens with every feeding here! I checked the Boppy after the feeding, and sure enough it was dry!

boppy newborn boosterThe second product I tried was the Newborn Booster with adjustable heights. This lays on top of the Boppy at one of two different heights, to help keep baby at an angle for feeding. I found that this did seem to help a bit with the amount of spit up that occurred during the feeding. She still spit up, that but there was less, as I think she was more comfortable at an angle. I actually already knew this, and had been propping her up with my legs before, so it is nice to not have to do that work myself. Another bonus to the wedge product, if you are a longer waisted woman, this helps bring baby closer to your breast, keeping Mom sitting up straight, and without an aching back.

boppy newborn booster pink coverThe only drawback I can see is that it is one more “thing” you need to have around for feeding time, and though there is a thin flap that you tuck under the Boppy, it doesn’t attach to the Boppy, which I would like to see in future versions of this product. I felt as if I was readjusting it a lot during the feeding, and would like it to feel more secure. One other note, if you are using this product, it pretty much covers the entire Boppy, which means the spit up now will land on the product, instead of the Boppy. Meaning, a water resistant cover for this as well might be in order in the future.

All in all I was happy with both products. They are both helpful in attempting to help minimize the effects of acid reflux.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The Protective Cover is a great investment to keep your Boppy pillow nice and dry The Newborn Booster is helpful to achieve a good angle for nursing babies to save tall mama’s back and reduce the effects of acid reflux.

Or Not to Buy… It would be helpful if the Newborn Booster could attach to the Boppy to keep it in place.

Shop! Boppy accessories are available at Babies R Us online and in stores nationwide. The Protective Cover is $9.99 and the Boppy Newborn Booster is $19.99.

Bravado! Designs Allure Nursing Bra Review

Bravado! Designs Allure Nursing Bra Review

2 Comments 09 March 2010

This post is about a nursing bra so if you’re not up for breastfeeding and boob talk: move along, nothing to see here.

bravado designs logoYou may recall a couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of reviewing Basics by Bravado nursing bras. And, I do mean pleasure because I really liked them. So you can imagine how excited I was to review a couple bras from the traditional Bravado! Designs line. This post is all about the Allure Underwire Nursing Bra.

About the Allure

A revolution in underwire nursing bra design, the Allure Underwire Nursing Bra combines Bravado Designs’ expertise in innovative bra development with our extensive knowledge of your need for good breast health and comfort, to create a bra that you will love and feel fabulous wearing.

The Allure Underwire Nursing Bra features the new standard in Underwire Nursing Bras, offered exclusively by Bravado: Supple-FitTM design. This proprietary fusion of design elements results in an underwire nursing bra that blends style with good breast health.

My Experience

bravado allure nursing braAll the technology in the world is great, but if the bra is uncomfortable it’s pretty much worthless. The Allure Underwire bra is, luckily, quite comfortable. Nearly every bra in my life has been an underwire so I really like that Bravado! has an underwire option that was designed with lactation consultants. The wire is wide to distribute weight and not pinch your parts. I found the underwire to be unobtrusive and easy to wear. Another design feature I really appreciate is that when you open the cup to nurse, it reveals almost your entire breast so you don’t have to fidget and work around the bra to achieve the correct latch.

The Allure is available in sizes 34 B/C to 38 F/G – the double cup sizing is good to accommodate growing breast size. But, since I’ve been nursing for a while my size has stabilized and this isn’t really a concern. I wasn’t sure what size to pick because I’m a size C and definitely not a B or a D. I picked the smaller option and went with the B/C. It does fit, but I do wish there was a C/D option because it’s almost too small. There are 4 hook options in the back to help adjust the fit. If you’re unsure what size to order, there’s a lot of great Bravado bra sizing information to help determine your size.

And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how pretty the bra is. It has a lot of beautiful lace accents, but is smooth to wear under a tee. It really doesn’t look like a dowdy nursing bra – it makes me feel like I’m wearing a real bra. You can even get the awesome matching Allure Boy Short Panty to help you feel less like a milk machine. I have them and I love them.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The Allure Underwire Nursing bra is a supportive, PRETTY bra that just happens to be a nursing bra. I am used to wearing an underwire bra and find the Allure to be quite comfy. Because the design has some stretch, it’s perfect to wear throughout pregnancy and is recommended after a feeding schedule has been established.

Or Not to Buy… I’d love a bra offered in C/D size for those of us on the big side of B/C and small side of D/E.

Shop! The Allure Underwire Nursing Bra is $54 and can be purchased online at Bravado! Designs. The matching Allure Bottoms are $22 and both are available in black and ivory.

Win! Bravado! is hosting an awesome sweepstakes to win a Nursing Essentials Prize Pack, including The Original Nursing Bra, The Essential Nursing Bra Tank, The Body Silk Seamless, Breast Pads and a Breastfeeding with Bravado! DVD.

mirra Beauty Care Review + Giveaway

87 Comments 08 March 2010

mirra logoBack in the day when I was working single woman I used to spend embarrassing amounts of of money on beauty products. I could easily spend hours of time and hundreds of dollars shopping for high-priced shampoos, creams and lotions. Obviously, I don’t have the time or money to do that these days and my beauty routine is more focused on what’s quick, easy and affordable. I think Kroger read my mind when they developed the new health and beauty line called mirra.

About mirra

Kroger is proud to introduce mirra, our easy to use, exclusive health and beauty care brand for family-focused women seeking effortless beauty. Mirra combines quality, natural ingredients with the latest science to meet 3 different needs: Daily – routine personal care; Renew – a rejuvenating time out; and Inspire – quick transformations for a night out.

mirra Products 1mirra is designed with natural products AND to be effective. Because, frankly, sometimes I do wonder if extract of whatchamacallit or juice of random fruit is really effective in moisturizing my dry skin. So, the idea behind mirra is spot on in that it balances the use of natural ingredients and science to create a formula that works.

My Experience

I received a very generous box of an assortment of mirra products including Smoothing Daily Shampoo and Conditioner and Renew facial products and body care. My first impression is that the each product is actually pretty generous in size so it’s not a case of paying less for less – you’re paying less for an average amount of product (if not more). Of course, the first thing I did was open the tops to smell and everything smells great. Nice and fresh and not overly flowery or sweet.

I’ve been using all the products for a couple of weeks and have mixed feelings. For me, the stand out products are the Renew face products – the Exfoliating and Detoxifying Cleanser and the Night Face Lotion. I just love a good thick face cream for night – and the Renew lotion is thick but not greasy and almost feels like gel. I know that sounds weird, but I like it. The Cleanser is meant to refresh and rejuvenate the skin with “apricot and oxygenated derma-beads.” To me, that means it smells nice and has little beads that feel great and always make me think they’re cleaning my skin better than no little beads.

mirra_shampoo_conditionerThe Smoothing Daily Shampoo and Conditioner aren’t my favorite shampoo and conditioner. So, this may not shock you, but I don’t shower every day so I need my hair to look decent for at least two full days and by about mid-day of day 2 with this shampoo and conditioner my hair looked pretty greasy. I know, I know, I should just shower. But, that’s easier said than done unless I want 2 kids in there with me. I’m not sure if it’s the particular formula (Smoothing) or the entire line of Shampoo and Conditioner.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy…. I would definitely purchase the mirra Renew face products again, particularly the Exfoliating and Detoxifying Cleanser. I love that the products are affordable and (for many) sold at your local grocery store. I mean, effective, affordable and convenient – you can’t beat that.

Or Not to Buy… I didn’t have as much luck with the Smoothing Daily Shampoo and Conditioner, but would definitely try a different kind – maybe Volumizing?

Shop! mirra beauty products including hair care, skin care and make up brushes are available exclusively at Kroger stores nationwide. Visit the the official mirra page and print a coupon for $5 off your purchase of any 2 mirra products.

Win! A box of mirra hair and skin care products!

Tutu Pour Mon Deux Tutu Shirt Review + Giveaway

208 Comments 05 March 2010

Tutu Pour Mon Deux logoTutu Pour Mon Deux is not your average tutu company. For starters, the tutu tees are not your average tutu. Rather, they are adorable tees featuring clever graphic appliques with an attached tulle skirt tutu. What’s even more noteworthy is the way in which Tutu Pour Mon Deux came to be.

The Tutu Pour Mon Deux Story

Inspired by her two daughters Erika Deady-Wohlers created the company Tutu Pour Mon Deux, which means “tutu for my two” in French. tutu pour mon deux childrenshospitalErica says, “So how does a woman with degrees in fine arts and architecture wind up designing and selling children’s apparel? It all started with one daughter who is consumed with dress-up and dramatic play, and her sister who was born with a congenital heart defect which required corrective surgery four days after she was born.

Erika wanted to give back to the tremendous hospital and doctors who cared for her daughter so she decided to start a tutu business to honor her both her daughters’ girly love of dress up and to raise money for Children’s Hospital of Boston. An amazing $10 per tutu sold is donated to the Children’s Hospital of Boston!

About the Tutus

Every young girl has an inner ballerina that wants to perform – usually anywhere, anytime! A band of tulle and colorful ribbon is attached to the bottom of either a sleeveless or long sleeved shirt with a unique image ironed onto the bodice creating a one of a kind, little girl’s tutu shirt.

Tutu Tee Shirts

I was lucky, lucky to win a Tutu Pour Mon Deux tutu when I became a fan on Facebook. I immediately popped over to the website to Design A Custom Tutu. You literally get to design your tee from top to bottom, but it’s very easy. First, you pick tee (long sleeve or tank top), color (six choices), and size (from 12-18 months to 6T). Next, select an applique patch – the choices range from a sweet cupcake to an edgy skull to a goofy cyclops. The next step is to pick your tutu color from the eight colors. design your own tutu shirtThe final step is to select a accent ribbon. I picked a black tank top tee in size 2T with a pink skull patch, pink tutu and pink ribbon with black polka dots. Toddler Girl’s tutu shirt arrived very quickly and was just as I designed. And very, very cute!

The tutu shirt is really adorable and very well made. The size 2T is a good size for her even though she normally wears a 12 – 18 months shirt. She can currently wear it with something underneath while its cooler and it should fit perfectly in the summer. The finishing is really lovely great and it seriously is cuter on her than I could possibly describe. We received countless compliments and inquiries when she wore it out and about. Now, you know my daughter wears some cute clothes, but I can’t think of any other single piece of clothing to ever get such a great reaction.

And, think of it this way: when you purchase a tutu, not only do you get an adorable Tutu Pour Mon Deux tutu tee, you also make possible a $10 donation to a very worthy cause.

Or Not to Buy… Tutu Pour Mon Deux tutus are not the typical frilly fluff of tulle tutu so if that’s what you’re looking for this isn’t for you.

Smaller by See Kai Run Review

8 Comments 04 March 2010

smaller by see kai run logoI’ve had the pleasure of reviewing See Kai Run shoes in the past – the See Kai Run Forrest shoes and the See Kai Run Grayson sandals were for Preschool Boy. Now that Toddler Girl is walking and running like nobody’s business I need to think more seriously about what I put on her feet. I need shoes that are supportive for her little feet but also flexible enough to allow for proper development and growth. Above all, the shoes must be made to withstand lots of trips and falls as Toddler Girl grows more steady on her feet.

About See Kai Run & Smaller

See Kai Run and Smaller promote healthy development of babies’ and children’s feet with their ultra-flexible soles, soft leather and wide toe box. Our footwear meets the American Podiatric Medical Association’s rigorous standards for foot health and functionality and has been awarded the APMA’s prestigious Seal of Acceptance.

Difference Between See Kai Run & Smaller?

Smaller shoes are, obviously, quite similar to See Kai Run but there are a couple distinctions. Smaller shoes are designed for babies from birth to 24 months and See Kai Run shoes are from 6 months to 3 years. The main difference is the sole of the shoe – Smaller shoes have a soft suede sole with non-slip rubber pads and See Kai Run shoes have a rubber sole better suited for outdoor play.

Our Experience

skr smaller frances shoeAs you can see from the photos, our Smaller shoes are adorable. The Frances shoe is white butter-soft leather with a silver criss-cross straps. I love that the style is as flexible as the sole and looks great with a dress or jeans. The shoes are uber soft and the “collar” of the shoe – the top of the shoe around the back of the ankle – is padded for added comfort.
smaller frances shoesEven though the Smaller shoes do not have solid rubber soles like the See Kai Run line, Toddler Girl has worn her shoes outside with no problem. They are still quite sturdy. Toddler Girl has the shoe in a size 12 – 18 months and while she’s 16 months old and usually wears a size 3 or 4 in toddler size shoes, they are still a tad big. Even though they’re a bit big, they do stay on her feet and I know she’ll be wearing them through the summer because of the adjustable hook and loop closure.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… My experience with See Kai Run shoes has always been – and continues to be – very positive. The shoes are stylish and built to last lots of toddler wear and tear. And, because they have the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Approval you can be confident they’re good for little feet.

Or Not to Buy… The sole of the shoe is not solid rubber so avoid wearing these outside in wet weather.

Pampers with Dry Max Review + Liz Lange Clutch Giveaway

266 Comments 03 March 2010

pampers logoPampers has redesigned and done a complete overhaul on the Swaddlers and Cruisers diapers and is launching the new Pampers with Dry Max. Starting this month, you should see the new and improved Pampers Swaddlers and Cruisers in stores and online.

About Pampers with Dry Max

Pampers Swaddlers and Cruisers with Dry Max are our new high performance diapers and the biggest innovation for the Pampers brand in the last 25 years. Pampers has invented the Dry Max technology to improve the current Swaddlers and Cruisers core. The Cruisers diaper is 20 percent thinner. This hard-working diaper helps lock wetness in and is Pampers’ driest diaper ever.

  • Twenty (20) percent less bulk, making it Pampers’ thinnest diaper and our driest ever
  • Softer outer cover for comfort inside and out
  • Tapered design

Cruising in Cruisers

pampers with drymaxFor the past week, Toddler Girl has been wearing the Pampers Cruisers with Dry Max. She generally wears Pampers Cruisers so I was able to compare the diaper with Dry Max to the standard Pampers. The diaper with Dry Max is thinner and the shape is a little different – the Dry Max is a little taller. When you open the diapers, the inside of the diaper looks a bit different. The original Cruiser has that webbing layer while the Dry Max diaper interior is smooth and purple, and the Dry Max tab is a little larger.

But, we all know that when it comes to a diaper, the important issue is “Does it work?” Who cares what a diaper looks like if it leaks like a sieve? We’ve had great luck with the Pampers with Dry Max. My daughter hasn’t leaked, gotten a weird rash or anything else that is problematic with a diaper. The fit is slightly different than the original Cruiser around her waist so I think we will have to move up a size.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… Toddler Girl is a Pampers girl so we will continue to buy her Cruisers – now with Dry Max.

Or Not to Buy… Diapers are one of those things that when you find a good fit for your family and your budget, you stick with it. I definitely think it’s worth giving Pampers with Dry Max a shot because we’ve had good luck with them.

Shop! Perhaps the best news is that Pampers with Dry Max will be offered at the SAME PRICE as current Swaddlers and Cruisers – obviously that varies from store to store, but you shouldn’t see an overall price increase. If you haven’t yet, sign up for a free sample of Pampers with Dry Max.

Win! A week’s worth of Pampers with Dry Max and a chic Liz Lange Diaper Clutch!

Say It With Style: Spell-It-Out Photos Review

4 Comments 02 March 2010

spell it out photos logoIf you are looking for a unique wedding, bridal shower or housewarming gift, look no further than Spell-It-Out Photos. Spell-It-Out Photos creates custom letter art using photographs of things found in nature to represent each letter. The result is simply stunning.

Spell-It-Out takes photographic images of objects in nature that create letters. We then give you the opportunity to pick and choose letters from our photo gallery to create a word, name or phrase that has meaning to you. Next you choose to have your custom creation framed, canvas wrapped, or individually wrapped. We ship it to you ready to hang. It’s as simple as that!!

Abstract ABCs

spell it out alphabet posterWe received the California Countryside ABCs poster for review, hoping the abstract ABCs would help Preschool Boy with his letter recognition, but I admit I was unsure if it would confuse him and go over his head. Thankfully, his reaction was a good one and he took to the poster immediately. He recognized some letters much easier than others and giggled at the swan making the shape of an S. He quickly claimed the poster as his own. The kind women at Spell-It-Out actually sent two posters so we took the second to my son’s preschool. His teachers were very appreciate and are excited to show the kids how you can find shapes and letters in unexpected places. The poster is really, really beautiful and obviously just as appropriate hanging on a wall in a home or office as it is in a preschool classroom.

Custom Word Art

I absolutely love the design your own art option at Spell-It-Out. I can’t tell you how much fun I’ve had picking and choosing letters online to make sample artwork. First, you pick the name or words you want to customize. If you’re shopping for a wedding gift, the couple’s last name, HOME, or WELCOME are good picks. Next, you decide if you want color, black and white or sepia toned images. To customize your artwork, you browse the collection of each letter to pick which photo you want to represent that letter. I’m amazed at how many different options there are for each letter. Some more colorful, others more subdued, some straightforward, others more abstract. They’re all gorgeous. (Check out the photo gallery to see what I mean.)

How do you like this one I made? So cool, right?spell it out shopping mama

Once you have your letters selected, there are a couple framing options and then you’re done. Order and your art will arrive ready to hang on the wall.

spell it out thank you cardAnother more wallet-friendly option is the art note cards. We received two note cards and they are lovely. Spell-It-Out sells sets of stationery with phrases like “We’ve Moved”, “Thank You”, and “Happy Birthday” in sets of 12. You can also design your own card to feature a family’s last name – the process is the same as designing framed art. A set of personalized note cards with a friend’s name would be a great birthday gift, too!

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… I love the idea of Spell-It-Out custom photo art, and there’s no question the photographs are beautiful. It’s pretty amazing to be able to recognize letters in such unusual places in nature. While I can’t speak to the quality of the custom framed artwork, the products we received were perfect. Both the posters and the cards are printed on sturdy paper and look beautiful.

Or Not to Buy… The custom last name and word art is a tad expensive, but it is truly a one of a kind gift. I can’t imagine anyone NOT loving it.

Shop! Visit Spell-It-Out Photos to design your own art or browse the pre-designed posters, framed art and cards. Framed and matted art of my 4-letter last name is $140. A set of 12 notecards is $20.

Our Experience

We received a set of small waterproof labels and a bag tag in the Pastel Dots with Brown pattern. A single sheet of the small waterproof labels has 50 labels, but they aren’t teeny tiny. As you can see from the photos, the small label is perfect for marking cups and bottles, and with 50 on a sheet I know they’ll last us a long time. We’ve washed the cup by hand who knows how many times and in the dishwasher at least 3 times since applying the label and, as youcan see, it’s still stuck in place on the cup and it looks just as good as it did the first day. Punkaboo labels should last between 50 and 60 times through a dishwasher.

ppunkaboo bag tagThe Bag Tag is such a great idea for school age kids, and I didn’t even realize it until we received one. Made in the same cute pattern as our labels, my daughter’s bag tag is perfect for staking her claim on her stuff at school, travel and on the town. At 2.5 by 4 inches, it’s not too big to overwhelm a diaper bag or back pack, but it’s big enough to get noticed.

Design Variety

Given that you have to label just about everything for kids in school and day care, labels are a must. They might as well be cute or reflect your kid’s personality and that’s where Punkaboo is top-notch. With over 200 designs – each fully customizable – you can easily find something to suit your needs. Punkaboo provides wording suggestions and you can select your font to make sure your label has all the information you want. For children with allergies, the Allergy Labels are a must to remind teachers and other students of particular risk.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… Punkaboo labels are great and the waterproof labels are truly waterproof and are a must for children in day care or attending school. I love the huge variety of designs and that you can customize them to look and say just what you want. Both our Punkaboo products arrived in in great packaging, including a bow, making them great for gift giving, too.

Or Not to Buy… I’m very satisfied with the product and can’t think of an improvement, to be honest. I would love to see Punkaboo add some clothing labels to the collection.
