Airocide and The Clean Air Revolution {Review}

by Amy on May 13th, 2013  |  5 Comments  |  Reviews

My two little girls (four and six years old) insist on sharing a room. While it’s very sweet of them to want to be together, there is one huge down-side to the set-up: When one gets sick, it’s almost certain that the other will be sick just days later. When we first received the Airocide for review, I decided to set it up in our bedroom because allergies hit me fairly hard this time of year. The day after I plugged in the Airocide unit, my six year old came down with the flu. Yes, the FLU.

product_airocide1Airocide is an FDA approved air purifier that completely eliminates all mold, fungi, viruses and bacteria (all major causes of allergy symptoms) that enter its chamber. What’s left is clear, crisp air. You better bet that the minute my daughter got the flu, I moved the Airocide into the girls’ room so it could work its magic. You know what? My little one didn’t get the flu. While we can’t be certain that she stayed healthy because of the Airocide, I can say that the Airocide won’t be leaving the girls’ room anytime soon.

About Airocide and The Clean Air Revolution

“This technology, developed by NASA, clears the air of virtually 100% of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) – the harmful gasses emitted by products you have around your home, like aerosol sprays, cleaning supplies, disinfectants, hobby supplies, dry-cleaned clothing, building materials, paints and paint thinners, strippers, pesticides and even air fresheners.”

Airocide has been tested over the last 12 years — check out the reduction in bacteria and mold in the following testing areas:

  • Surgery – average results 73% reduction in bacteria and mold
  • Office – average results 72% reduction in bacteria and mold
  • Households – average results 75% reduction in bacteria and mold
  • Childcare Center – average results 60% reduction in bacteria and mold
  • Dental Private Practices – average results 81% reduction in bacteria and mold

How Airocide Works

Airocide draws in harmful airborne pathogens and forces them into a densely packed matrix of highly reactive catalysts that are activated by a high intensity 254-nanometer light. The reaction destroys these harmful pathogens on contact. Nothing is captured so there is nothing to clean. All that exits is crisp, clear air, with zero ozone emissions.”

Airocide in living roomOur Experience with Airocide

In addition to making our home cleaner and healthier, the Airocide is a no-maintenance machine and has a nice sleek design that blends into the room. There is no assembly required and no filter to maintain or replace. I just pulled the Airocide out of the box and plugged it in! There is also a low hum while the Airocide is running, but it’s actually a plus in my girls’ room because it creates white noise while they are sleeping.

This quick video gives you an idea of how Airocide works and blends into your room seamlessly. There’s also a slew of raving testimonials on Airocide’s YouTube channel.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… After having the flu virus in our house and isolating it to only one person in the family, I am sold on the Airocide technology. With all of the toxins we bring into our homes, it’s more important than ever to purify the air. Airocide is maintenance-free, cutting edge technology that made our flu and allergy season noticeably easier once the machine arrived.

Or Not to Buy… The hefty price tag of $799 makes this amazing technology a major splurge.  While the Airocide technology is not inexpensive, the actual cost of ownership is only $.65 a day including maintenance costs.

Jennie Finch Talks Motherhood, Olympics & More {TSM Exclusive Interview}

by Amy on September 10th, 2012  |  5 Comments  |  Life

We are delighted to share an interview with the awesome Jennie Finch. Born and raised in California, Jennie started pitching the softball at the age of 8. This two-time Olympian is now raising her own children and recently announced she’s expecting baby number three with her husband Casey Daigle. We think you’ll love hearing her perspective on motherhood, sports and beauty in our fun interview.

Amy, for The Shopping Mama: Why do you think athletics and being active is so important for young girls, aside from the obvious health benefits?

Jennie Finch: You can’t understate the health benefits and of course those spill over into higher self-esteem, which is so key for young girls. Getting active as kids sets us up for good habits as adults. And I know how much athletics taught me! Those lessons I learned on the field about preparation, hard work, how to be a good team mate, and the idea that all you can control is your attitude and effort are lessons that we can take to heart and apply to the rest of our lives.

Amy: You are such an inspiration to young girls and women. Can you talk a bit about the issues that young female athletes face today?

Jennie: Young women in general face so many pressures – to look a certain way to act a certain way for acceptance. Of course technology these days plays a role. There’s no question it’s a tough time in life, but persevering through that and striving every day to be the best person you can be is the way to go. We’re all going to make mistakes and do things that maybe we shouldn’t, but working and continuing to try is so important! We’re all made special. Finding that spark in each of us, seeing it in others, and trying to shine in our own ways.

Amy: In your opinion what can we, as mothers, do to give our young girls the tools to overcome obstacles presented to them as they grow up?

Jennie: I know I always appreciated that my mom was there for me. She still is! She listens to me, and offers encouragement. That kind of love and encouragement is so valuable. I know just how important that unconditional love is along with setting an example for our children.

Amy: How has your softball career helped you in motherhood?

Jennie: My husband and I love to play around with our boys, just like we did on the field with our team mates. It was an amazing blessing to be able to play a game as an adult, and I like to think we kept some of that playfulness! Plus those same principles I learned on the field about only being able to control my attitude and effort help! And taking it one day at a time, one moment at a time (or one pitch at a time) come back to me when I have a crazy schedule lined up and I’m worried about balancing work and family.

Amy: As moms it’s tough to fit in “me” time to exercise everyday. What can we do to add exercise to our daily routine while we’re juggling the kids’ hectic schedules?

Jennie: That’s so tough. I struggle with it, too. I try to get my exercise in with the kids, if it’s running around playing a game of tag, or doing sets of lifting using Diesel as the weight, or even jumping on the trampoline with them. Something is better than nothing! And then I get out when I can, too, and run stadium stairs or just do a run. I have an amazing group of women to run with, and that helps. If I’m going for a morning run, I learned the trick of laying out my clothes the night before and thinking of them as my “running buddy.” I can’t let my running buddy down in the morning when the alarm goes off and it feels too early.

Amy: On a lighter note… You always look so well put-together and natural. We’d love to know your top 5 must-have beauty products.

Jennie: I love Natural Advantage Skincare products. The all day moisturizer and the daily cleansing product are great. Phiten shampoo and conditioner do wonders for my hair, especially since I’m blonde and in the sun so much! Aquaphor for those extremely dry spots. Sunblock is so important as well. We love La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Mineral Ultra Light Sunscreen SPF 50 for those days when we need that extra coverage.

Amy: We were excited to hear that you’re expecting baby number 3 this winter! What do you love most about having a newborn, and what are some of the challenges you expect to face with a new wee one?

Jennie: We’re definitely a little nervous about playing zone defense with the arrival of number three! Having two under the age of two will be an adventure for sure. But mostly we’re just excited. It’s such a miracle that our family is growing again, and we can’t wait for our little girl to be here! We just feel so incredibly blessed!

Amy: Watching you win gold in Athens on the US Olympic softball team was amazing! Why is softball no longer an Olympic sport? Do you think it will be back in the future?

Jennie: I hope it will be back in the future! We’re working to make that happen. With the support of the Olympics, interest in softball grew around the world. It’s played in more than 140 countries, and knowing that there were opportunities for young girls to grow up playing this game I love so much was an incredible thing. It’s hard to say why softball isn’t an Olympic sport right now. We were never given a reason for it being voted out. There were lots of theories, but we don’t know what the true reason is, which made the decision even harder to accept. The television ratings for our games were good, the interest in the sport was high, and over 140 countries play softball. We’re just not sure, but we’ll do what we can to get it back in.

Amy: What were your favorite events to watch in the London Olympics and why? Do you have a favorite moment from this year’s games?

Jennie: Having competed in the last two Olympics the entire games was so special for my family and I. It was so much fun gathering around cheering on Team USA! We loved swimming, beach volleyball, track, gymnastics and those sports that we don’t often get exposure to like diving and archery.

Cleaner Air with a Holmes Air Purifier & Aer1 System {Review}

by Amy on November 21st, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Reviews

I’ve been meaning to get an air purifier for a few years now. In the last few years I’ve suffered from allergies, and we recently moved into a ‘new’ 101 year old house which means perpetual dusting. About a month ago, we received the Holmes® HAP9424B-TUS Medium Room Air Purifier and the aer1 germ fighter replacement filter. In the few weeks that we’ve had the system running, there’s a noticEable difference in the air quality of our home.

About the Holmes® HAP9424B-TUS Medium Room Air Purifier

  • HEPA-Type filtration
  • Slim design and integrated handle allow flexibility in placing the unit throughout the home
  • 3 speed settings
  • Optional ionizer
  • Filter Service Indicator
  • Recommended for medium rooms, up to 165 sq ft

 Our Experience

The Holmes Air Purifier required no assembly. I pulled it out of the box, checked to make sure the filters were in place, plugged it in, and turned it on. I decided to put this purifier in the living room/dining room area because this particular model is meant for medium/large areas, and because we spend most of our time there. The machine creates a soft, white noise that is barely noticeable when on the low setting. When placed on the highest setting, it is definitely noticeable, so I try to increase to that setting after we’ve gone to bed. As a side note, this purifier would work wonders in a nursery because the low hum would most definitely be soothing to baby at bedtime.

Perhaps as exciting as cleaner air quality in our home, is the fact that there is less dust circulating our home. Old houses produce a lot of dust, and though it seems excessive, I end up dusting every two or three days. Since we’ve used the Holmes Air Purifier system, I have noticed much less dust on surfaces where the purifier is located. YAY for less dusting!

In addition to the Holmes Air Purifier, we also received the aer1™ Germ Fighter Replacement Filter, which is perfect for this time of year with all of the colds going around. As moms we can’t do much about the germs out kids pick up at school, but we can create a healthy and hopefully germ-free environment for our kids at home. There are several types of Aer1 Replacement Filters, so you can select one that is perfect for your home. (For example, if you have pets you may want to try the Odor Eliminator filter.)

The aer1™ Germ Fighter Replacement Filter:

  • Infused with Silver technology- reduces airborne germs and bacteria known to cause cold or flu
  • True HEPA filtration removes up to 99.97% of air borne allergens from air passing through the filter
  • Compatible with all aer1 ready™ air purifiers

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… We’ve had this system now for a month, so obviously I haven’t had the system for an entire cold/flu season, but I do believe my kids have benefited from having it. We all got colds around Halloween (like we do every year), but we all seemed to ‘kick’ them faster than usual. I do think the Holmes Air Purifier & Aer1 System helped us make a speedy recovery. The sleek/slim design of the Holmes purifier stands easily and blends in with the room.

Or Not to Buy… The low hum that this machine produces is not noticeable once you become accustomed to it. When set on the lowest setting it is barely noticeable, though on the highest setting it sounds more like a fan. I can see how this may be a drawback for some people, but I also think this is a huge benefit in a nursery where parents often buy machines to produce this sort of soothing hum.

Do you currently use an air purifier? How has it effected the air quality in your home?
