Maxi-Cosi Mico AP Review
After all the hype I was thrilled to get our hands on the Maxi-Cosi Mico AP. After carrying three babies in infant car seats, I cannot possible overstate the value of the fact that the Mico AP weighs it at only 8.6 pounds, making it the lightest premium infant car seat on the market. In a side by side comparison, the Mico AP is markedly lighter than a similarly classed infant seat. When you’re carrying a 20 pound baby, every pound matters to my weary biceps. While testing the seat with my adorable niece, we all agreed it was easier to carry her
hefty self in the Mico AP.
Just because the Mico AP is lighter on your arms, it doesn’t mean Maxi-Cosi skimped on safety features. In fact, the Mico AP features Superior Side Impact Performance with Air Protect® technology. The extra protection is concentrated around baby’s head, but doesn’t add any bulk to the car seat. (Indeed, the Mico AP looks very similar to the previous generation Mico that lacks the Air Protect technology.)
The fabric sun canopy with flip out visor is a step above some competitors we’ve used. It is easily adjustable, but just because it’s a light and breathable fabric doesn’t mean it’s flimsy. It didn’t come displaced during testing. The extra protection of the flip out visor means you may even be able to skip the blanket-over-car-seat-to-protect-baby routine we’re all familiar with.
The Mico AP is relatively easy to install using either the adjustable base or the lap belt threaded through the car seat directly. The base lacks any indicators to guide in achieving the correct angle, but guidance on the seat is clear. The seat is in the correct position when the line is “Level to the Ground.”
Mico AP Travel System
Because Maxi-Cosi car seats are quite popular around the world, many stroller companies offer adapters so you can use the Mico AP as a travel system. Of course, Maxi-Cosi’s own Kaia stroller is a perfect fit for the Mico AP.
The Kaia is a sleek and superb lightweight stroller. It has a hefty weight limit of 50 pounds so you’ll use it for years. The storage basket is large and the roomy seat has a nice recline. The stroller stands on its own when folded.
If you’re looking for a super stylish travel system, Maxi-Cosi car seats coordinate perfectly with Quinny Moodd strollers.
To Buy or Not to Buy
To Buy… The Maxi-Cosi Mico AP is a fantastic new car seat that is lightweight but heavy on features. I appreciate the side impact Air Protect technology, easy to carry handle, and generous sun visor. The car seat is definitely made for today’s parents with the features we want in the simple style we crave.
Or Not to Buy… I love that the premium fabric is available in a rainbow of colors – literally – but it’s not the most soft. It’s texture and feel is likely a matter of preference.
We are delighted to be a compensated Maxi-Cosi Ambassador to spread the word about the new Mico AP. Stay tuned for a chance to own this brand new car seat.
