Shopping BabySize: Week 32

by Kate on January 22nd, 2012  |  5 Comments  |  Shopping, Shopping BabySize

Shopping BabySize: my favorite finds for babies, kids and moms based on the approximate size of the wee babe in my belly.

The baby weighs approximately 3.75 pounds ( or the size of a large jicama) and is about 16.7 inches long. The size of a jicama. Really, BabyCenter? There’s not another fruit or vegetable that weighs about 3 and 3/4 pounds. Because it’s pretty hard to find jicama reflected in baby and children’s products, just so you know.

Jicama Finds

J is for Jicama Print

While this print is adorable I think it’s much better suited for kitchen decor than a child’s room. When I’m thinking of words to help reinforce letter recognition, jicama isn’t exactly what comes to mind.

Jicama Recipes

Not surprisingly, I had better luck finding recipes using jicama, a crispy vegetable.

Mimijumi Very Hungry Baby Bottle {Review}

by Malia on January 20th, 2012  |  5 Comments  |  Baby, Reviews

The first months of baby’s life EVERYthing revolves around baby’s eating. When will she eat, what will she eat, and dear goodness will she take a bottle when I need her to? For breastfeeding mamas, feedings can be a crazy balance of preventing nipple confusion by waiting until baby is established on the breast, but not waiting too long and ending up with a baby who refuses anything but the real deal. It’s nice to have a bottle that helps reduce this stress. Mimijumi Very Hungry bottles are designed to be the perfect compliment to breastfeeding and ease the transition to bottle.

Mimijumi

mimijumi, LLC based in Nashville, TN is a design driven company that specializes in simple, safe and natural products for the modern family. Through the design and production of infant care essentials, mimijumi products are made for both baby and parent to create the most natural experience possible.

This design is based on the psychological dynamics of feeding/soothing items as transitional objects. The benefits of breastfeeding are well known, but breastfeeding is not always practical in today’s society. Created with input from Designers, Mothers, Nurses, Physicians, and Lactation Experts, mimijumi’s first product the Very Hungry bottle was conceived as a natural, modern and stylish complement to breastfeeding.

Very Hungry Bottle

Mimijumi’s first product the Very Hungry Bottle has a nipple that truly resembles a breast and is designed to require baby to latch to express milk, like the breast. The nipple is a single piece, made of medical/food-grade silicone and vented to minimize gas or colic. The bottle has a wide opening, making it easy to clean. The colorful red base is non-skid to help keep the bottle from sliding around and matches the cap. The bottle is dishwasher safe and free of BPA and phthaltes.

Baby Kate was content to eat from the Mimijumi the other day when I went to a doctor’s appointment and preferred not to nurse. My children like to eat so much that we haven’t had to deal with the challenge of breast to bottle transition, so I can’t really speak to the effectiveness of the bottle for picky babies. It really does resemble a breast so I think it would be a great option for a baby having issues with this transition.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The Mimijumi bottle is a great option for breastfeeding moms looking to minimize nipple confusion and for families dealing with a picky baby. The bold colors and unique styling make this a bottle that will be noticed.

Or Not to Buy… My one complaint about this bottle (and a lot of bottles) is that there’s nowhere to put the lid while you are using the bottle. I will drop almost anything not physically attached to me onto the floor. I would love if the lid clicked onto the bottom of the bottle or came with a little gnome who held the lid whenever I needed. (What, a helper gnome is too much to ask for?)

Shop! The Mimijumi Very Hungry Bottle is available on-line from Amazon for $14.99 or from thenewmomshop.com.

sweetriot Chocolate {Review}

by Laura on January 20th, 2012  |  5 Comments  |  In the Kitchen, Reviews

Is there a mother out there who hasn’t resorted to a quick bite of chocolate (or more than just a bite) as a way to unwind after a tough day with the little one(s)? Okay, maybe it’s just me.  Regardless, when I do indulge, I like to make it count with a sweet treat that is high quality and delicious.  And if it’s lower in calories, well that’s just a bonus!  Sweetriot chocolate bars are the best of both worlds, as they are both delicious but also portion control-friendly.

About sweetriot

our identity:  sweetriot is human, globally responsible, irreverent and built for a new generation.

our values

  • We use premium, high quality, and all-natural ingredients.
  • We believe in fair trade with developing countries.
  • We celebrate culture and diversity through our products.
  • We create sweet experiences for our customers, partners and employees.
  • We are young at heart, energetic, down-to-earth and contribute to the greater good.

Tasty, Social Responsible, and Even Kind of Healthy

The riotBar comes in three varieties – 60% Dark Chocolate with Crunch Nibs, Pure 70% Dark Chocolate, and Pure 85% Dark Chocolate.  Since they are so high in dark chocolate content and made from organic ingredients, they are healthier than most commercial candy bars.  A bite into one of the 20-21 calorie squares yields a flavor that is almost airy – much lighter than your typical name brand chocolate.  For those with diet restrictions, all three bars are gluten-free, dairy-free,and low in sugar. Hooray for a guilt-free indulgence!

I especially liked the packaging for  this product, and upon reading the label I discovered that it was a limited edition wrapper featuring original artwork by emerging artists.  As if that wasn’t impressive enough, sweetriot is the first and only chocolate company to offset all of its carbon emissions and it sources fair trade chocolate from Latin America.  Foodies and celebs, including Rachel Ray, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Drew Barrymore, have endorsed sweetriot for both its healthy products and its positive social mission.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy…  It’s delicious, it’s as healthy as a chocolate bar can be, and it’s produced by people who care about their impact on the world.  I’d say those are some GREAT reasons to buy!  Plus, at $3.99 per bar, a sweetriot product is no more expensive than the other high quality chocolate bars on the market.

Or Not to Buy…  Unless you are allergic to cacao, I’ve got nothin’.

Shop!  Sweetriot riotBars are available at Whole Foods and independent retailers nationwide, or online at the sweetriot website. Shopping for Valentine’s Day? We like the riotous riotBar gift set for $25.

Easy Rolo Pretzel Cookies {Recipe}

by Kate on January 19th, 2012  |  5 Comments  |  In the Kitchen, Life

I’ve never made up a recipe in my life so I credit this delicious creation to this pregnancy. Okay, Pinterest and this pregnancy. Last week I made some Rolo Cookies from this Six Sisters’ Stuff recipe I discovered on Pinterest. They tasted amazing. But then I got to thinking… what is the only thing that could improve upon chocolate and caramel goodness? Salt and crunch, that’s what. I now present the most delicious AND EASY cookie ever: Rolo Pretzel Cookies.

Rolo Pretzel Cookies Recipe

Ingredients

  • Package Rolos
  • Devil’s Food Cake Mix
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1/3 Cup Vegetable Oil
  • Package Mini Pretzels – SALTED (You’ll notice my husband accidentally bought Unsalted for this batch, but the saltiness is what makes them super delish)

Instructions

1. Combine cake mix, eggs and oil. The dough will be thick.

2. Stack an unwrapped Rolo on a pretzel and wrap with dough. Use just enough dough to cover both the Rolo and pretzel.

3. Place on a greased cookie sheet and bake for 8 – 10 minutes at 350 degrees.

4. Sprinkle with powdered sugar, if desired.

5. Enjoy! And share… maybe.

Makes about 2.5 dozen.

Happy, Peaceful and Positive Mama in 2012 {Guest Post}

by Kate on January 19th, 2012  |  5 Comments  |  New Year New Mama

We are excited to share this guest post from Erin Cox as part of our New Year, New Mama series. Erin’s mission is to bring more joy to the world, improve marriages, and raise happier and healthier children by inspiring and motivating MOMS to take care of themselves first and lead their best lives. We love her advice to help make us all more happy, peaceful and positive mamas.

***

Does anyone ever set a goal to simply be happier? This may seem like a modest goal, but achieving it can be difficult when you are constantly busy and have small children consuming your life. But…2012 can be different. This year is brimming with energy and excitement, and I have a feeling it’s going to be a breakthrough year! Setting goals and realizing success are two keys to feeling happy, and there are a few other practices that the happiest people do regularly that we can all incorporate to bring more joy to our daily lives. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking:

Set Goals and Move Towards Your Dream Life

When is the last time you sat down and visualized your absolute dream life situation? Are you living it now? If not, what would you need to do to get there? I encourage you to get clear on what you want in your life now, in the next year, and in the next five years. Maybe you are home with a baby now, but you envision yourself as a business owner, teacher, or blogger. Set small goals that help you lean toward your bigger goals and dreams. If you aren’t clear about what you really want out of life, how can you ever achieve it? When setting goals, make sure they are realistic and have a time frame. Then, hold yourself accountable. So, you want to start a blog? Then do some research on blog platforms and determine what you want to write or photo-document. Only you can bring your gifts, thoughts, and ideas to the world in your fabulous, unique way!

Take More Time For Yourself

Do you crave more time to exercise, read, sleep, or simply relax and catch your breath? There are more opportunities to take time for yourself than it might seem. During your kid’s naps, do you clean and accomplish task after task? Maybe a day or two each week, instead of cleaning and working you should just indulge in a guilty pleasure (think yummy lunch and catching up on recorded Bachelor), or get your kids involved in a little project while you curl up with a cup of tea and enjoy a fabulous book. In the evening, put your kids to bed early and take a bath while sipping on a glass of wine! Happy moms are those who take really good care of themselves so they have the energy to love and care for their families!

Be Completely Present with your Children

Focus on the task at hand while working, but when you are with your kids, try to give them your focused attention. We obviously can’t do this all day long, but how often do you sit down with your kids and revel in the moment with them, giving them your full attentiveness? It’s another way of fully living and experiencing your wonderful life. You are blessed to be a mother!

Find the Right Work/Life Balance

I’ve worked outside the home full-time, part-time, and not at all, and it took doing all of them to determine the work/life balance that suited me best. Do you feel at peace with the way you are living your life? Do you suffer from guilt while at work, or discontent and boredom while at home? There are so many solutions and alternatives that can allow you the time you crave with your family while also using your creative gifts and intellect. The same goes for balancing constant work and cleaning with downtime and enjoying the fruits of your labor. Make sure you are balancing your time in a way that honors your priorities in life!

Do Something Every Day That Brings You Joy or Makes You Laugh

Life should be fun to be lived to the fullest! And really, raising kids can offer you many opportunities to laugh every day. I remember one day when my oldest daughter was a few months old, and had a serious diarrhea blowout all over her adorable outfit, her blankets, and the car seat. What a mess! There was poop everywhere and I just wanted to cry. As I was trying to wash off my screaming baby in the tub while surrounded by poopy, smelly clothes everywhere, my husband walked in from work and said with a smile, “shitty day, huh?” and I just burst out laughing. It was just what I needed, and made light of what really was a humorous situation. Imagining what I looked like was definitely funny. I even had poop on my cheek. As mothers, we will experience many difficult and sometimes super-gross situations with babies… all you can do is laugh. If your kids don’t offer you enough humor, then be sure to find other things that make you smile. Call that funny friend or watch an episode of Modern Family. People who laugh easily are more fun to be around and enjoy the health benefits that laughter brings, such as: improved immune function due to boosted levels of infection-fighting antibodies, better digestion, and enhanced sleep!

In closing, I wish each of you a more joyful, fun, and serene 2012! Also, my new book, One Hot Mama: The Guide to Getting Your Mind and Body Back After Baby, will be published by Hay House in the fall of this year.
