Five Budget Savvy Nursery & Toddler Room Trends

One of the greatest sources for online inspiration for children’s decor is without a doubt, Project Nursery. The website offers an endless amount of inspiration for designing nurseries, kid’s rooms and even parties. I can easily get lost for hours browsing and reading and admiring the decor ideas. I’m thrilled to welcome Project Nursery co-founder Pam Ginocchio sharing some great tips on nursery and toddler design trends.

One of the downsides of being surrounded by amazing room decor is the constant desire to redecorate. I can’t tell you how many hours I spend weekly on design blogs, Pinterest and in the Project Nursery project gallery drooling over gorgeous decor. Now, I can’t be investing in a re-design as often as I’d wish so a very important design strategy I’ve learned is to refresh using inexpensive yet chic items. I love the way a room can transform with just a few tweaks, a little DIY and an eye for a bargain. Here are my top five most fabulous budget savvy kids design trends.

1. Love your Rug – The floor is a great place to start when re-vamping a kid’s room. It creates the framework for all the other elements in the room and you can really have fun with it. There are so many fantastic online sources to score great rugs at a discount these days. Some of our favorites include pbteen.com, Overstock.com, OpenSky.com and FLOR.com. Even if you have wall-to-wall carpet, you can layer a smaller area rug on top to get that designer look and create a soft and comfy place for baby or toddler to play.

2. Pillow & Pouf Fun – Pillows and poufs are like the icing on the cake. We love finding cute pillows on Etsy.com. An inexpensive and easy way to infuse a theme into a kid’s room without overkill. If your palette is monochromatic pillows and pouf give the perfect opportunity to add pattern.

3. Paper or Stencil? – Love the look of wallpaper but don’t want to commit or invest? Try the new fully removable wallpaper from Tempaper or order a stencil and get painting. Much like the wall decal trend, temporary wallpaper is making waves in the design world.  It’s non-committal which any parent knows is like gold since the kids grow so quick.

4. Paint Something – I always say paint is the easiest and least expensive way to make an impact. And if you absolutely hate it, you can easily change it up. We’ve been seeing a wave of painted stripes on accent walls or even on the ceiling.

5. Go Modern – If the budget is tight think less is more. Going with a modern aesthetic really lends well to this theory and it’s easy to find simple, modern pieces that are also budget friendly. And you don’t have to worry about filling the room with a lot of extras. We’ve been crushing on the new Skip Hop bumper free crib sets. Graphic patterns and fun colors punch up a crisp modern crib.

Project Nursery is all about showing real parents how to take charge of their own design and decorating projects. In the spring of 2008, moms, business partners and design enthusiasts Melisa Fluhr and Pamela Ginocchio started ProjectNursery.com. Since then, the site has evolved into the leading resource dedicated to baby’s first room and beyond.

These rooms are gorgeous. I love the rug tip. I got an absolutely gorgeous rug off overstock.com that was crazy inexpensive and the quality is amazing. The best part is my toddler loves it (it’s in baby’s room and she couldn’t care less) and it will still be great when she’s older. I would put it in my room! Plus we rent so it keeps everyone off the nasty rental carpet.

What great ideas! I, too, was a Project Nursery stalker when I was designing my son’s nursery. We used paint, modern touches, and craftiness as much as we could in order to stay in budget and also give him a unique space that was all his own. Great post!

I love this room! I am looking for ideas for my baby girl due in July. The ottoman, rug, and decals are my favorite! Where is the bedding from?
