MasterCard Here’s to Mom Promotion: It’s Not Too Late!

by Kate on December 28th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Shopping

A few weeks ago, we shared information about the MasterCard Here’s to Mom Holiday Promotion. The basics: register your MasterCard, spend $200 online and you will receive a $20 MasterCard gift card. It’s that simple and it’s real. How do I know? I received my $20 MasterCard gift card reward the other day. Go me! But, seriously, you have to love a promotion that is focused on rewarding moms for doing something we adore: shopping online.

The promotion runs through the end of the year, so you still have time to register, shop and earn your reward. We think shopping the after-Christmas sales and end of year deals are a great way to get even more bang for your buck.

How It Works

  • Enroll with your MasterCard cardfollow (credit or debit) and e-mail address.
  • Shop online with that card between November 15 and December 31, 2011.
  • After spending $200 online you’ll receive an e-mail where you can redeem a $20 gift card reward.

Happy Shopping!

Thanks to MasterCard for providing compensation to spread the word about the Here’s to Mom program.

What I Wore {29 Weeks}

by Kate on December 28th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Fashion & Beauty, Life, What I Wore

Welcome to What I Wore Wednesday. We were out of town and traveling and Christmasing so my clothes were a contrast between total comfort and trying to look nice to celebrate the holiday. Here are some favorite looks from the past week.

I ordered this shirt in the Tulle crazy Cyber Monday sale and I wasn’t sure how it would work. Without the belt it looked like a giant muumuu (which I totally support for pregnant women), but was rather unfortunate. I thew on a belt above the bump so I at least looked pregnant. The shirt, however, still looks like my grandmother’s tablecloth. You can’t see the bottom of the outfit, but it’s skinny jeans with brown suede boots.

Top: Tulle
Belt: Banana Republic
Jeans: Slim Fit Motherhood Maternity
Boots: Ellen Tracy

Despite the fact that I can’t seem to wear them without looking totally awkward, I keep trying with the leggings. I actually enjoyed this attempt at leggings but that is due to my new shoes! UGG Cardy Boots from my husband for Christmas. <3.

Shirt & Leggings: Max Studio
Scarf: Years and years old from a market in Germany
Boots: UGG Classic Cardy Boots

To join in the fun, head over to The Pleated Poppy blog and Monday Mingle. If you post about What You Wore, leave a comment with link so I can check it out.

New Boppy Travel Pillow {Review & Giveaway}

by Malia on December 27th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Baby, Giveaways, On the Go, Reviews

Boppy’s New Travel Pillow made our New Mom Must Have list from the ABC Kids Expo earlier this year and now that baby girl is here, I was excited to try it out. Breastfeeding is not easy for me and finding the right support is vital. Now that I have a toddler and a baby, feeding on the go is a must. The Boppy Travel Pillow has been so helpful, especially since Baby Girl often decides she is “starving” the second we leave the house.

Popular Breastfeeding Pillow Now with Get Up and Go!

Loading up the car with baby, toddler, at least one stroller, diaper bag, blankets, etc, etc every.single.time we leave the house is a huge task. I’ve already contacted leading scientists about the possibility of growing a third arm, but until science (and possibly fashion) catches up with the practical need of the busy mom, products that are lighter, smaller, and easier to carry are my friends.

The Boppy Travel Pillow is just that. It’s the same great quality as the original Boppy pillow made slightly more compact with handy travel features added. The pillow folds in half and zips closed which makes it the size of an average purse. (It’s almost exactly the size of my beloved Petunia Pickle Bottom Touring Tote.) A handy shoulder strap makes it easy to sling the pillow over your shoulder and keep your hands free for toddler wrangling.  I also love the pretty design and bright pink polka-dot interior. To the casual observer it looks like just another bag, not a nursing pillow, great for those who prefer not to advertise their nursing activities.

I find the Travel Boppy the perfect size for breast feeding and actually prefer it to my standard Boppy. Breastfeeding in the car can be an exercise in awkwardness, but the Travel Boppy has made it go much more smoothly. So far baby girl’s head has not been banged into the emergency brake or steering wheel (little man was not so lucky). I’ve been keeping the Travel Boppy in the car for use on the go, but I like it enough I may bring it inside to use all the time.

(This is not me. I still have a lot a couple pregnancy pounds to lose and refuse to get in front of the camera think the model shows off the Boppy Travel Pillow well.)

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The Boppy Travel Pillow brings very functional travel features to the award winning Boppy nursing pillow. It’s great for any nursing mom on the go and would also make a great shower gift.

Or Not to Buy… If you already own a Boppy and don’t leave the house much, you might not need the travel option. Of course, if baby is making you feel trapped at home (I totally relate) you may really need to get this travel pillow and get out of the house.

Shop! The Boppy Travel Pillow is available in Olivia (pink) and Gray Dot (green) at Babies R Us for $44.99.

Win! A Boppy Travel Pillow and be one of the first to own this great pillow!

How to Enter: Visit Babies “R” Us and tell us what color Boppy Travel Pillow you would want to win.

Earn Extra Entries – valid only after completing the first required entry. Please leave a separate comment for each you do.

Giveaway ends January 6. Open to US residents only.

Thanks to The Boppy Company for providing a sample and giveaway prizes. As always, opinions are my own.

Whoopie Pies: Everything You Need to Make, Give & Eat!

by Shannon on December 22nd, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  In the Kitchen, Shopping

I’m not trendy. I’m a follower. So, the following statement is a tremendously bold one for me to make: I predict whoopie pies are the next dessert phenomenon, much like cupcakes have become.

What is a whoopie pie you ask? Well, according to Wikipedia (the go-to source for lazy folks like me) a whoopie pie is “an American baked good that may be considered either a cookie, pie or cake. It is made of two round mound-shaped pieces of chocolate cake, or sometimes pumpkin or gingerbread cake, with a sweet, creamy filling or frosting sandwiched between them.”

whoopie pies

Having never tried a whoopie pie, I was a skeptic. The name conjured images of neon pink snacks that never expire at my local gas station.

Upon moving to Georgia a few months ago, I tried my first whoopie pie. We were visiting a preschool for, ironically, preschool girl. We happened to visit at snack time and the teacher invited us to join the class. The treat? Whoopie pies. Turns out, the teacher had provided the snack that day because she had baked many, many batches of whoopie pies and was looking for ways to unload them. Why so many batches? Well, she was perfecting her recipe for the competition at the Georgia State Fair, of course! (You cannot make up stuff this good.)

So, I had my first taste of whoopie pie. Let’s just say that preschool girl almost lost her entire pie. I wanted to snatch it up and say, “mine, mine, all mine!” YUM! Since that first taste, I’ve noticed whoopie pies everywhere.

So why not consider giving the gift of whoopie pies to someone in your family this Christmas season? Whether you want to make them yourself or purchase them ready-to-eat, the options abound.

Give Whoopie Pies!

There are entire cookbooks dedicated to whoopie pies that are starting to turn up on mainstream shopping outlets like Crate & Barrel and Barnes & Noble (or maybe just stores with “&” in the title?). And with whole books dedicated to their creation, I’m willing to bet there are more flavors than just the chocolate, pumpkin and gingerbread mentioned by Wikipedia. Hmmmm, credibility issue?

To make your own whoopie pies, Cooks.com features a tremendous variety of whoopie pie recipes in an assortment of flavors. Williams-Sonoma even has a special pan designed to garner the perfect mound-shape for the sandwich.

Making a whoopie pie for a special occasion? Don’t fret, there are “special occasion” whoopie pie pans available as well. Bunny, heart, pumpkin and Christmas pans can be found with a simple Google search.

A hybrid between making your own and purchasing, whoopie pie kits are available at several online retailers, including Crate & Barrel and Amazon.

Whoopie pies can be purchased The Fresh Market bakery. Available in-store or online, they are yummy (yes, after Ms. Linda’s chocolate whoopie pies, we tried TFM’s pumpkin whoopie pies at Halloween time)!

Due to high demand (okay, maybe I’m not predicting a trend as much as reporting on one), WickedWhoopies.com can no longer guarantee delivery before Christmas, but they will ship you some “wickedly good whoopie pies” in more than 20 different flavors and varieties.

So, why not get the baker in your family gifts to help him or her join the latest trend? Happy last-minute shopping!

Shopping BabySize {28 Weeks}

by Kate on December 22nd, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Life, Shopping BabySize

Shopping BabySize: my favorite finds for babies, kids and moms based on the approximate size of the wee babe in my belly.

At 28 weeks pregnant, the baby in my belly measures nearly 15 inches from head to heel and weighs about 2 and a quarter pounds – about the weight of a chinese cabbage. This challenge really isn’t getting any easier! But, unlike last week’s cauliflower, there are actually some fun kid cabbage finds. Many of them involve the cabbage rose, but beggars can’t be choosers, you know? For good (tasting) measure, I’ve thrown in a couple recipes, too.

Partum Me?! Getting close!

by Laura on December 21st, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Life, Partum Me

We’re just a few days away from Christmas.  It’s hard to believe that it’s almost here, that Charlie is 8 months old, and that he’s become more of a little boy than a baby boy every day.  He has two teeth now, and from the sound of the screams that were coming out of him this morning, I’d say there are a couple more on their way.  He claps, sorta waves, uses the baby sign for “bottle,” pronounces a multitude of syllables, plays peek-a-boo like a CHAMP, and is actually starting to move around in a way that seems more like crawling and less like scooching.  He’s a little dynamo, that boy is.

I’ve mentioned before that we live in a pretty small house that often feels jam packed with stuff, so we’ve debated long and hard about how to handle the whole “shopping for baby” thing around the holidays.  We’d prefer to have a limited amount of toys that fill a number of developmental needs.  Charlie is at the stage where he has mastered his exersaucer and can sometimes happily sit on the floor for quite a while with a few blocks and some handheld toys.  And he already has plenty of stuff to keep him busy at this point.  So when the grandparents came a’knockin’ to ask us what to buy him, we suggested getting things for the future.  We told one set of grandparents to find a nice quality ride-on toy that would help him with mobility and balance.  I suggested this one from Wishbone because it can be both a rocking toy and a movement toy.  I anticipate that Charlie will be able to use it within the next few months.

My dad, ever the planner and saver, wants to start some sort of financial account for Charlie.  There were many options – savings bonds, accounts that could only be used for college expenses, custodial savings plans – so I think the surprise on Christmas Day will be what option made the final cut.

Other relatives who asked for suggestions were told to buy clothes for three months from now, books, and quality toys (especially those that make music – which is a favorite of Charlie’s) that are labeled 12m+.  I’m very excited to see what Charlie’s playtime future holds as he opens his gifts!

And what are we buying Charlie for Christmas?  Nothing, of course.  That’s Santa’s job.  (wink wink)  I thought I’d wait to reveal in a fun picture post after the holiday, but I’ll give some hints.  We’ve decided to start a collection of a certain toy for Charlie that he’ll be able to enjoy when he’s a couple years older.  We also bought a new piece of art for his city-themed bedroom.  And I’m also going to try to grab a home version of the toy that he’s always using at daycare.  I missed a Living Social deal for classes at a local play center, but think that something like that might be an option, too.

I’ll leave you with a picture of what is sure to be one of our favorite Christmas gifts for Charlie.  A hat from our old home, Brooklyn, care of his awesome Uncle Bryan.  Way to represent, Charlie.

What did you buy for your first Christmas with baby?  What were your favorite developmental toys for your almost-but-not-quite-one-year-old?
