30 Days of Toys: Memory Game

by Kate on November 18th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  30 Days of Toys, Shopping

Toy: Kid O Memory Match

Get It For: Grade school children who have or are willing to play a game requiring patience and attention to detail.

Why We Like It: The Kid O Memory Match game is available in two sizes (36 pieces or 16, which is easier for younger children). The game set from Kid O, a great children’s toy and puzzle company, includes a playing board, green knobs to remove and reveal potential matches, and four 2-sided playing cards. Four of the games involve nature (to match animal tracks) and the others are more abstract (like matching upper case and lower case letters).

Shop! Kid O’s 36 piece Memory Match is currently $26 on Amazon – the same price as the 16 piece set. This and many of our other 30 Days of Toys picks is available in The Shopping Mama’s Store.

Advent & Holiday Countdown Calendars

by Shannon on November 18th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Shopping

Have you seen the Nordstrom sign making the rounds on Facebook? No. Here it is…

I want to say that I agree whole-heartedly with Nordstrom.

You know it’s coming…

HOWEVER, there are some holiday items that must be considered and purchased soon, including holiday countdown calendars. Looking for one for your family this season? Whether you are seeking an Advent, Hanukkah or holiday countdown calendar, there are lots to choose from that are available in fun, beautiful, artsy and crafty versions. Shop now to get some of these calendars by December 1.

Hats & Mittens Advent Calendar

Available at Garnethill.com for $98.00 plus free shipping through December 6, I love the idea of making this advent calendar the garland for my tree.

LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar (7958)

Perfect for young and not-so-young fans alike, this Star Wars advent calendar is available at Target.com and Amazon for $39.99.

3-D Pop Up

My kids would adore this manger calendar with 3-D pop-ups, available at Barnesandnoble.com for $14.39.

Chocolate Advent Calendar

For those who like to do good with everything they purchase, how about the Divine Milk Chocolate advent calendar made from Fair Trade Certified chocolate? Available at Serrv.com for $5.99.

Online Advent Calendar

For the tech-savvy child, consider an online calendar like this one available at Boowa & Kwala.

Hanukkah Countdown Calendar

This felt Hanukkah calendar features bright colors, embroidery and a candle for each night of festival. Available at Landofnod.com for $49.00 with free shipping.

Funky Advent Calendar

My personal favorite…a kitschy advent calendar made from recycled license plates. Available on Etsy.com for $129.00.

Or, how about this brilliant idea from The New Home Ec? Simply use leftover wrapping paper to wrap 12 holiday books you already own. Then countdown the last 12 days of Christmas (or the 8 days of Hannukah) by unwrapping a new story for bedtime. Children can see how many days until Christmas by counting the books remaining.

Minted Holiday Cards {Discount Code}

by Kate on November 17th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Reviews

Every year I spend far too much time planning our holiday cards, but for good reason. For better or worse, the card is likely the only physical snail mail card many of our friends and family will receive from us. As a result, I want the cards to represent us, reflect our personality and, of course, show off the kids with an adorable photo. This year, we’re sending cards from Minted and I am so pleased with how they turned out!

Ordering from Minted

If you’ve ever ordered Christmas cards or Hannukah cards or birth announcements or any sort of card, for that matter, you know it can be a long process. I spend an embarrassing amount of time comparing different designs to find just the right one. Minted offers a cool Find It Fast feature where you can quickly browse what your favorite photo will look like in different cards. It saved me a lot of time, or at least allowed me to look at more options quicker before making a final design decision.

After creating and saving several designs I consulted my husband and we picked the Varsity Holiday Photo Cards. The design had several color choices and there was one that matched the photo of my kids perfectly. Once we picked a design, there were still a lot of personalization options. You can select the paper, a folded or flat card, interior options on a folded card and various options for the back of a flat card. We opted for the flat card with a small photo of the family and a long note on the back.

A few days after placing my order, I received an emailed proof of both the back and the front of the card for my approval. Everything looked great and 8 days after placing my order, the cards were in my hand.

During ordering process, it was made clear that a real person would review the cards to make sure they looked good. It was a nice reassurance to know a second set of eyes would look over the order in case I missed anything or submitted a low quality photo or something. When the cards arrived, the packaging made clear they were given personal attention.

The label says: “from Pat especially for Kate” and soon our friends and family will receive the cards from our family especially for them.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The process was simple and made it easy to look at and compare a number of cards. The designs are really gorgeous with a lot of variety in style. I was anxious to see the quality of the paper (we picked the least expensive “signature paper”) and it didn’t disappoint. The paper is thick and will definitely make an impression. I also loved knowing that someone was actually looking at my order rather than it going directly to a printer.

Or Not to Buy… Minted cards aren’t cheap and may be out of the budget of many.

Shop! Minted holiday cards can be priced as low as $1.21 per card and go up from there. We’re excited to offer you an awesome discount code to save on your fabulous cards. Use the code READERS46 for 15% off your purchase. Code expires November 28.

Thanks to Minted for providing samples for the purpose of this review.
