Tiny Love Gymini Move & Play {Review & Giveaway}

by Kate on October 27th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways, Reviews, Toys

We are so excited to be partnering with Tiny Love to share a series of product features and share company and product news with you throughout the next several months. I’ve been familiar with the brand since my son was a baby; indeed, he enjoyed the Take Along Mobile and a Play Mat. So now, years later, it’s exciting to have the opportunity to learn more about this company, its products and upcoming endeavors.

About Tiny Love

  • We work with the experts. Tiny Love has a team of experts in child development and developmental toys that support baby’s growth.

  • We continually work.  We are always on the lookout for the next developmental toys that will stimulate your baby’s skills and senses, nurture and develop your relationship, and help you enjoy your time together during those first immensely exciting years.
  • We care about babies. We care about parents. Our team’s goals are ongoing innovation and originality paired up with continuous support of parents as they grow and develop alongside their babies. Our high-quality products not only help parents fulfill their role in their baby’s life, but also to have fun while at it.

Gymini Move & Play

The Tiny Love Gymini Move & Play maintains the same basic idea as the Tiny Love Play Mat my son used years ago, but has made improvements and innovations that make it a completely different toy for babies. Gymini Move & Play features a sliding arch connector that allows you to bring toys closer to baby and move toys with great flexibility. The Mat is also noticeably larger than others in the past at 45″X41.7″ in size. The electronic lights and music toy not only entertains baby, but moves to make it easier to get baby in and out from underneath the arch.

In addition to the electronic toy that hangs at the center, there are six more activities and toys to keep baby entertained. All of the hanging toys can be moved up and down the arches and other activities (like crinkly square) are attached to the mat.

If you’re worried about baby rolling right off the mat, the large edges fold up and snap together to create a borders to help contain the fun.

The size of the mat really can’t be overstated as it’s much bigger than others I’ve seen. To give you an idea, here’s my nearly 3 year old daughter investigating the hanging toys. Even with the large size, the Play & Move folds in half for easy storage. We’ll put this away until baby is born, but I’ll keep it close because I’m excited to finally have a great toy for visiting friends’ babies.

When baby outgrows the toys, you can easily unsnap and remove the arches to create a simple play mat.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The Gymini Move & Play incorporates the features you know and love in a play mat and improves upon them with smart innovations like the sliding and adjustable position arch. The toys offer a great variety for interaction and play, and the mat grows with your child from birth through infancy and beyond.

Or Not to Buy… The colors are a bit “loud” since they’re appealing to babies, so you might not want this to be a permanent fixture in your living room. (And that’s when the folding for storage comes in handy!)

Shop! The Gymini Move & Play is available directly from the Tiny Love Store and on Amazon for $74.99.

Shopping BabySize: Week 20

by Kate on October 26th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Shopping, Shopping BabySize

Shopping BabySize: my favorite finds for babies, kids and moms based on the approximate size of my wee babe in the belly.

I’m 20 weeks pregnant and the average baby at this point weighs 10.5 ounces and is 10 inches from head to heel, or about the same size as a banana. At the ultrasound yesterday, my little thing was measuring 14 ounces – a little fatty! (And, yes, I totally know that an ultrasound isn’t 100% accurate. The day my son was born he was estimated to weigh only 5 pounds, 4 ounces. Hours later I delivered a 6 pound, 9 ounce baby.) However, when you look at this belly, it’s not hard to imagine the baby in my stomach is a chunk!

Finn + Emma: Sweet and Modern Styles for Baby

by Laura on October 26th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Clothes, Reviews

I am a sucker for baby clothes that are modern and colorful.  Nothing turns me off more than butterfly collars and dull pastels.  Finn + Emma makes sturdy items in contemporary prints that utilize muted colors with a punch of bright tones.  And they are organic.  What’s not to love?!

Meet Finn + Emma

“Welcome to the land of Finn + Emma, where we live in the balance of stylish and sustainable, whimsical and sophisticated, classic and contemporary. With fresh prints, modern colors, and heirloom quality construction, we are creating a new world for the organically grown baby.  One where boring designs and toxic chemicals are a thing of the past, and adorable, wearable, remarkable organic cotton is abundant!

Sustainability is bountiful too. You grew your little one organically, so why add chemicals now? Only the finest 100% organic cotton, eco friendly dyes, and all natural wood will do for your little munchkin, and we’ve got plenty. And on top of that, our garments and accessories are produced in fair trade settings that focus on social and economic independence for local people, women especially, working to provide for their families in a safe and fair environment.”

Scooter Prints for Scootin’ Babies

The first thing I noticed about the Footed Pant and Kimono Top was the quality of the material and the construction.  Double stitching, strong seams, and quality snaps mean that these items will outlast any abuse that Charlie can heap on the outfit and at least one round of hand-me-downs if not more.  I have washed this outfit at least half a dozen times and haven’t seen any fading or wear, like we do with clothes from some of the bigger shops.  The organic cotton was super soft even before the first washing and the print – oh, the print!  It’s simply adorable.  Scooters in blue, orange, and my favorite color – gray- adorn both pieces.  The greatest detail is the large orange scooter that is stitched to the bottom of one of the feet of the pants.

Even though this outfit lends itself most to being a sleeping ensemble, the print and the shape of the garments are modern enough that they could be worn during the day, separately or together.  A scooter is a seemingly grown-up item, but Finn + Emma manages to make it totally kid-friendly without going too baby.  There are also coordinating items in stripes and solid colors that allow for mixing and matching.  I particularly love the reversible scooter jacket, which allows you to showcase the scooter print or keep it simple with the solid gray and scooter detail.  The items for baby girls are equally adorable in shades of purple with a cute, abstract flower print.

Shop!  Finn + Emma’s online store offers the full line of its baby clothes as well as some beautiful crib linens and sleek toys.  (I am coveting the Birch Wood Play Gym (below) with its handmade look and minimalist aesthetic.)  The prices might seem steep at first, but once you consider the quality of materials and construction, they become quite reasonable.

Thanks to Finn + Emma for providing sample product.

What I Wore {20 Weeks}

by Kate on October 26th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Life, What I Wore

It’s What I Wore Wednesday-day! It’s a fun link up hosted at the Pleated Poppy to inspire busy moms to put a little effort into what we wear. Some inspired ladies share what they wore every darn day. No one wants to see seven outfits form me, primarily because half of them are repeats, but here are two favorites from the week.

It’s time to retire these jeans. They were a fashion risk for me to begin with and at some point it becomes obvious that a pregnant woman should NOT wear white skinny jeans. That time has come (and gone). But I enjoyed it while it lasted.

Sweater: American Eagle
Jeans: Loved by Heidi Klum at Motherhood (Maternity)

***

I’m pretty sure I’ll be repeating this outfit a hundred times over the next several months. I love that so many “regular” tops are long enough to wear with a pregnant belly. The boots are super coo, too, so I think I need some skinny (I use that term loosely) jeans to show them off. Any suggestions for good “skinny” leg maternity jeans?

Top: Banana Republic
Sweater: Missoni for Target
Jeans: Citizens of Humanity Kelly Bootcut (Maternity)
Boots: Ellen Tracy (from Rue La La)
Weird Smirk: All me

20 Week Update: Ultrasound & Belly Photos

by Kate on October 25th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Life

My big 20 week ultrasound was this afternoon. Barring any complications, this was our only chance to get a look at the baby so we were pretty excited. And I was just hoping to confirm that there is, in fact, only ONE baby. (Only one. Told you so, mom!)

In case you’re wondering where we landed on the Should Kids Go to an Ultrasound discussion, we decided to take my nearly 5 year old son and not my daughter. She played at a friend’s house while my husband, son and I got a peek at the baby. My son was very well-behaved and actually enjoyed the ultrasound for a bit. And then he asked to play Angry Birds. So there you go. But, I’m glad we took him as he asked some sweet questions and feels special because he got to see the baby.

Before we get to the baby inside, here’s a look at the baby from the outside: 20 week belly pictures.

For the sake of comparison, here are 16 week belly photos and a 12 week belly photo.

The ultrasound experience was so different from previous pregnancies. I spent the entire time terrified I would spot a little boy part or signs of a girl. I literally covered my eyes – and my husband’s eyes since he was totally trying to peek. At one point my husband gasped and said, “OH! I saw something.” And the tech replied, “That was the cord.” But, in all seriousness, he looked more than I did and spent half the ultrasound convinced it is a boy and the other half that it is a girl.

Apparently, if we had been looking to find out it would have been easy as pie. Baby was breech and spread eagle the entire time. The breech part doesn’t concern me. Yet. But, baby better get its little behind in the right position come March! The baby was also very active and made it difficult for the tech to get some necessary measurements. At one point, we thought I’d have to come back in 2 weeks for another scan. I see the doctor on Thursday and am hoping to hear that everything looked just as it should.

The ultrasound photos are labelled, but here’s a quick run down. The first one is the profile. And what appears to be a giant tummy. The second photo is a hand. And, the third photo, my favorite from all we received today, is a side view of the baby with its legs bent and entwined, the cord and an arm near the head. (You can click on them to make them larger, if you are interested.)

20 week ultrasound profile20 week ultrasound hand20 week ultrasound legs

I have to admit the ultrasound was a little anti-climatic for us because we didn’t find out if it was a boy or girl and as a result I spent at least half the time not watching the giant screen right in front of my face. But, assuming baby is healthy and happy, I think the wait and anti-climatic ultrasound will be rewarded with genuine surprise come delivery time.

Partum Me?! Erasing Mommy Guilt

by Laura on October 25th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Life, Partum Me

Thanks to everyone who commented here, on Facebook, and in person about last week’s letter to Charlie.  I think I might write one every six months and print it out, so that he has a collection of them when he’s older.  Lately, I’ve just found myself thinking how honored I am to be Charlie’s mom.  I’m sure all of you parents out there can understand that feeling, even when your kid has just thrown himself on the floor in a fit of rage in aisle #2 in Target.  In “real life,” I can be a pretty loud, outspoken, controlling person.  But Charlie humbles me, forces me to stop and just listen, to see all the little things every day that are so awesome.  I’m still going to be my sarcastic self, but my son injects a very necessary dose of laughter and purity into my daily routine.  Now if he’d just stop growing so darn fast, everything would be perfect!

I wasn’t quite sure what I was going to write about this week before I saw this blog post over on BabyCenter.  I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the new mother who wrote the entry.  It seemed as if she was beating her self up over some pretty small “mistakes.”  Calling them “stupid things parents do” made me wince.  We all do things that might not fall precisely within the parameters of the recommendations given to us by experts, but to call our actions stupid or even to imply that we as parents are stupid seems a little more masochistic than I’d prefer to be.  One commenter to the blog post said she used to put her toddlers in high chairs and then put them on top of the table to keep them away from their siblings.  Okay, that one might be over the edge of what’s rational, but taking the insert out of a car seat is not.  And I can’t count how many times a very little Charlie took a long nap in a sitting position or on my chest.  At the time, I knew those things weren’t “recommended,” but I also knew that my son was sleeping peacefully and that I was getting some much needed time to re-charge, too.  There’s nothing stupid about that.

There are tons of things we’ve done with Charlie that probably aren’t kosher with the experts, but they’ve worked for him.  Food other than formula and breastmilk isn’t supposed to be introduced until six months of age, but Charlie started right at five months because he was fascinated with all things food-related.  He now eats homemade purees of apples, pears, sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, peas, and avocado like a champ.  No mistake, there.  Our guy has become a rolling maniac, but I still lay him down on our platform bed with a few toys while I get ready in the morning.  Could he roll off?  Maybe.  We will probably need to adjust this routine in the coming weeks as I can tell that some sort of pre-cursor to crawling is about to happen.  But I won’t beat myself up about what we’ve done so far.  Charlie naps in his co-sleeper, pack’n'play, car seat, stroller, swing, Ergo, and sometimes right next to me on our couch.  Basically everywhere but his crib.  He has also started sleeping on his stomach since gaining the ability to roll over on his own.  Here’s the thing, though – he SLEEPS.  Two naps a day and 10 hours at night.  I’m not about to mess with that!  I completely support breastfeeding as long as possible but we have started the weaning process with Charlie because of my work schedule and production issues.  It hasn’t phased Charlie at all.  Okay maybe I harbor a little guilt with this one, but Charlie is happy and healthy which is what matters most to me.

I’m sure there are many other things I could list that might be on the don’t list for parents, but I can’t remember them all because I don’t spend too much time beating myself up about those decisions.  When I was pregnant, the best piece of advice I got – from quite a few of my friends who are moms – was “make the decisions that are right for you and your baby and NEVER feel guilty about them.”  I’ve tried to put that advice into practice with Charlie, although I admit that sometimes it’s hard when so many factors in our society are designed to make mothers feel guilty about everything.  My wish for the mother who wrote the Baby Center blog and for every mother out there is that we can all find confidence in our parenting.  It’s not just about making ourselves feel better; it’s also about setting an example for our children!  I want Charlie to know his mommy stands behind her decisions and feels good about herself because those are qualities that I want Charlie to have in his own life, too.

Have you felt mom guilt?  When?  Why?  What did you do to get past it?
