The advice I give all moms? “Do whatever it takes to love and adore your child!” If that means a pacifier, use it. If that means co-sleeping, do it. If that means not potty training until they ask, by all means.
For me, this means many things. This past year, with my husband in Iraq, it meant that both my children ride in a double stroller at all times, on all outings out of the house. Period. Using a double stroller made shopping with two children a pleasant outing rather than a dreaded chore. My daughter is now five and today at Target she happily crawled into the new Joovy Scooter X2 we received for review. According to my daughter, I was destined to be pleased with the stroller the minute it came out of the box because it came in my favorite color – apple green (called “Greenie”).
Meet the Joovy ScooterX2
The Joovy ScooterX2 is designed to fill a giant hole in the double stroller market – a lightweight, “fit through any door,” side-by-side stroller that has more room for big American kids.
The Scooter X2 gives you the features you demand, the fashion you expect and the quality Joovy is known for – all at a reasonable price.
Joovy ScooterX2 Review – Stroller Put to the Test
Whether I liked it or not, my children loved the opportunity to sit side-by-side, rather than tandem, in the stroller and toddler boy crawled in and demanded, “wok! wok!” right way. That’s “walk, walk” for those of you not familiar with toddler speak. Seriously, I only had three wheels on the thing during the super-simple assembly and he was trying to sit in it voicing commands. He’s destined for management.
And I do like the X2 very much. This side-by-side stroller is affordably priced and fits through all commercial doors. A fan of tandem strollers, I wasn’t sure how I would manage a side-by-side, so I gave it the ultimate test. The ultimate test, you ask? Can I get to the back of my local Gymboree store with this stroller?
YES! The ScooterX2 made it through the entire store, you know, back to the infant apparel that, when we see it, we tilt our heads and sigh wishing our screaming toddlers were still that size. That place. In fact, the Scooter X2 made it through every door on every outing. The only test it didn’t pass? The ridiculously small checkout passages at The Fresh Market. However, I don’t fault the Scooter for that, those passages are so small their own buggies don’t fit through. One word of caution: no matter how narrow the side-by-side stroller, it is always wise to tell your children to keep all hands and feet in the buggy. While the X2 does fit through all doors, we did have one incident with preschool girl’s fingers because she had them outside the buggy (which is not as much of an issue with our tandem).
So, the stroller passes the width test. But how does it do on other judgement criteria?
STEERING – While the ScooterX2 is not quite a one-handed steer, I did accomplish that on a few occasions. In all other situations, it is very maneuverable.
ROAD CONDITIONS – With small, non-inflatable tires, the ScooterX2 is definitely a town or light walking stroller. However, it handles these conditions with grace and strength. At no time did I feel like the stroller couldn’t handle the road beneath me.
BRAKING – The “flip-flop-friendly” brake on the ScooterX2 is very easy to engage and disengage with one motion.
LOADING AND UNLOADING – …the children, that is. With the convenient solid step in front, children are able to easily ascend and descent from the stroller with ease if you do not have the front bar installed. We didn’t have any accidents, but please make sure that if your children are loading and unloading, you have the brake engaged.
CUP HOLDERS – The ScooterX2 features two mesh cup holders – one behind each seat attached to the sunshade. These cup holders will hold small drinks, sippie cups or a regular soda can. They will not accommodate a trenta-sized green tea from the super-popular coffee shop.
SEAT BELTS – I like the safety straps on the ScooterX2 very much. Like most straps that lace through a plastic clamp, they are a little challenging to adjust. However, once in place, the straps and protective sleeves do a great job of keeping my little ones secure without rubbing their necks or shoulders bare.
STORAGE – There is storage available under both seats; however, the storage area is divided by a fabric sheet. I have found myself in several situations where a single, extra wide storage space would be more practical. There is storage for the kiddos! Each seat features two mesh pockets in which children can store pacifiers, Lightening McQueen, sippie cups, etc. The pockets hold a generous capacity and putting things in and getting them out is easy for even small toddlers. Finally, there are two zippered pockets on the back of the stroller to secure cell phones, keys, etc. They are roomy and very handy.
LEG ROOM – By “leg room,” I don’t mean for the kiddos. They have all the leg room they need. I’m short and yet I find my stride coming close to the back axle quite often. I can never remember the physics of motion, but if I get this right that means a taller person than me (and who isn’t), would sometimes find themselves stepping on the stroller.
RECLINING SEATS – The seats in the ScooterX2 recline independently with the adjustment of straps. The straps are super easy to tighten or release.
SUNSHADE/ROOF – Follow-the-sun! The sun shade featured on this stroller features a “window” for spying on your young ones and, with the easy release of some velcro tabs, will adjust to spread out in front of the buggy. I did not find myself in any situation where I could not provide shade for my children.
TRUNK SPACE – I drive a four-door sedan. When I had my second child, my initial search for a double stroller included the criteria “will it fit in my car?” because so many double strollers will not fit into anything less than a mini van. The X2 folds very easily with the push of a button and twist of the handle. It does make a quick trip to the ground that startled me the first time I folded it. It stows in my trunk easily with room for groceries, etc. to spare. And while the initial tug to get the stroller out of my trunk requires two hands, from the edge of the trunk to the ground is a one-handed unfold. And if you are lifting the stroller from the ground up, it is a one-handed operation.
Take a look back at those categories. Am I reviewing a stroller or a car?
To Buy or Not to Buy
To Buy… The Joovy ScooterX2 is an affordable double stroller that is portable, durable and easy to operate. While it won’t accommodate an infant car seat, the stroller holds two children of similar size or vastly different sizes from just sitting to preschool age. The X2 makes outings enjoyable.
Or Not to Buy… If you are tall or have long legs, you may wish to do a “test drive” before clicking “order” from the internet.
Shop! The Joovy ScooterX2 Double Stroller is available for a retail price of $229.99 in Black, Green and Orange. Get it now with Free Shipping from our affiliate Amazon.
