yoomi Rechargeable Self-Warming Bottle {Giveaway}

by Kate on September 7th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Baby Shopping Guide, Giveaways

I heard bottle-warming nightmares since before I became a mom. You know those middle-of-the-night,-knock-over-the-bottle and struggle to boil water and heat breast milk while baby shrieks from hunger nightmares? No fun at all. Inspired by his family’s struggle to warm bottles, one dad designed a genius solution that is saving mom and baby sanity around the world: the yoomi self-warming bottle.

How yoomi Works

The yoomi is a bottle and warming device in one. You charge the bottle in water or a sterilizer for 25 minutes and once its charged, it’s ready to use whenever you need it. Next, fill the bottle and push the yellow button.  60 seconds later the bottle is heated to the natural temperature of breast milk and ready for baby.

yoomi Features

  • Safe: breast milk temperature – every time … helping to preserve the nutrients in your baby’s feed. yoomi is 100% BPA free.
  • Quick: warms feed in just 60 seconds, quicker than any other warmer on the market.
  • Great value: the warmer can be used up to 100 times … that’s 16p per mobile feed.
  • Time–saving: sterilizes and recharges at the same time.
  • Portable: lightweight and easy to transport … fits into even the smallest of bags

yoomi Products

yoomi bottle are sold as single 5 and 8 ounce bottles with warmer or you can purchase the slow-flow bottle and warmer separately. The bundles and sets of multiple bottles with warmers are the most cost effective if you enjoy the system.

Shop! A 5 ounce yoomi feeding bottle with warmer is $32.95 and a duo set of two is bottles with warmer is $49.95.

Win! A yoomi Bottle with Warmer!

Meet Cuskiboo: Your Baby’s Best Friend

by Kate on September 7th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Baby Shopping Guide

Neither one of my kids had a lovey or true comfort item as infants, but I really wish they would have. There’s definitely something to be said for a small travel-friendly, cuddly item that can help bring comfort to baby. Designed specifically to comfort even the littlest of babies, the CuskiBoo is a small and soft, eco-friendly lovey.

Meet CuskiBoo

  • The Original Baby Comforter  – The Ultimate Gift For Babies & Parents
  • Naturally  Safe and an Alternative To Pacifiers, Dummies Or Soothers
  • Cuskiboo’s Unique Concept Soothes, Calms & Comforts Your Baby
  • Extra Cuddly Soft Hygroscopic Material  -  Fully Machine Washable
  • Anti-Bacterial Properties Which Are Sustained Wash After Wash
  • Made From Organically Grown Bamboo  – Eco Friendly, Biodegradable

We first learned of the CuskiBoo when creating our NICU Care Packages – the company who distributes Cuskis in the US donated them because they are currently the only comforter being used in neonatal hospitals in the UK. The CuskiBoo even has a special protocol for use in hospitals and is recommended because the anti-bacterial material actually captures mom’s scent, making baby feel connected to mom even when they’re separated. That feature definitely qualifies the CuskiBoo a prime candidate for comforter-in-chief when mom isn’t around.

Shop! The CuskiBoo Eco Friendly Lovey from Cuski is available online from our affiliate Amazon for about $30.

Thanks to Calisson for providing CuskiBoos for our NICU Care Packages!

Shopping BabySize: Week 13

by Kate on September 7th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Life, Shopping, Shopping BabySize

Welcome to a new weekly post on The Shopping Mama! I’ll be celebrating and marking the passing weeks of my third pregnancy the best way I know how: shopping.

I’ll share some of my favorite finds for babies, kids and moms based on the approximate size of my wee babe in the belly. So, for example, this week BabyCenter says the baby is about the size of a medium shrimp. So, below you will see some utterly cute little “shrimp” finds. Turns out there’s not so much shrimp cuteness – a void in the market perhaps? – so this week is a bit more of a challenge than some future weeks.

So, without further ado… I present cute Shrimp-ness.

Partum Me?! Developments galore and a remembering

by Laura on September 6th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Partum Me

There have been so many new developments in the last couple weeks that I can’t even remember all of them!  I had my first proud mommy moment at daycare.  Charlie goes to a very small daycare center that we picked precisely because it is intimate and friendly.  We feel really lucky to have found this place as it is quite special.  They have an annual end-of-summer party where they “graduate” the children who are going off to kindergarten and present an award to every single child in the center.  Charlie was awarded “Most Independent While Playing.”  I joked that my child was starting early with the anti-social behavior but the director said that wasn’t what the award meant at all.  She said most babies don’t like to be left alone to play at this age, but Charlie is happy to have a toy in his hand if the teacher has to turn her immediate attention to the child next to him.  Anyway, it was his first certificate so it will be up on the fridge for a while and then be saved for all of eternity.

Charlie took his first spin in an exersaucer about two weeks ago.  The first time was rough as he struggled to steady himself on his feet and grab the toys.  He was still a bit too small for the seat, but a rolled up towel behind him helped and we are amazed at how quickly he has gained strength and agility.  Now, he spins himself around to get to other toys and has even figured out how to manipulate some of them to make noise or move.

This weekend was Charlie’s first taste of rice cereal.  We knew to expect that he’d push most of it out of his mouth, but we were pleasantly surprised by the amount that actually stayed in there.  At first, he made an extremely unhappy face when the spoon was placed in his mouth, but sometime during the second day’s feeding he started to realize that the spoon was delivering the tasty mush mixed with breast milk and he started sucking on it to get the cereal off.  It’s an incredibly slow process that takes tons of patience (not my strong suit), but faces like this one made the entire thing much easier:

No teeth yet, but still lots of drool and chomping down on any toy (or hand) that happens to be nearby.  Thank goodness for Sophie the Giraffe!  He is babbling and squealing a ton these days.  Both the daycare director and I have noticed that, at times, he watches our mouths as we talk to him.  She says it’s a definite sign of language development.  My son, an early talker?  Wouldn’t be a surprise considering what a motor mouth I am.

As we head into this week leading up to the 10-year anniversary of 9/11, I’m thankful that I have Charlie’s constant antics to keep my spirits up.  On September 11, 2001, I had been a New York City resident for exactly 10 days even though I grew up outside the city and had worked in midtown Manhattan for two years before moving in.  I was just two weeks into my first semester of law school and I sat in the school’s basement computer lab when the first plane hit.  Our computer screens blipped off and back on, but no one seemed concerned.  I went upstairs to my legal writing class and we did our best to concentrate as sirens blared constantly for nearly an hour before we were evacuated.  I later learned that those sirens were every police car and fire engine in Brooklyn heading over the bridge to the scene.  We were told to go home but weren’t told why.  I could see the towers smoking from our classroom and as I ran down Atlantic Avenue to my apartment, I got coated in debris that was drifting through the winds that always cross the East River on nice Fall days.  It wasn’t until I got home and saw my roommate’s expression as he stared at the TV that I realized something was very wrong.  I turned towards it just in time to see the first tower fall.  And then I fell.

The days after that were a blur of military presence, waiting to hear the fate of people I knew, and the smell.  Oh, the smell.  It’s the one thing I can recall almost instantly whenever I remember that day.  It took a couple weeks for me to work up the courage to go to Ground Zero.  The now iconic chunk of facade was still sticking out of the ground, searches of the rubble were ongoing; most of us just went to be around other city dwellers who needed a good cry.  In those first few weeks, New York was so quiet, so empty, so…sad.  When I remember it, I try so hard to remember the goodness that it brought out in all of us who had become so used to ignoring each other.  My thoughts go out to all who lost someone they cared about in the events of 9/11 and I hope that this anniversary brings you some peace.

Talenti Gelato Review

by Laura on September 6th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  For Mama, In the Kitchen, Reviews

talenti salted caramel

It’s okay, moms.  You can admit that one of your favorite times of the day is when you finally get the kids to go down for the night and you can sit on the couch with a bowl of ice cream and a DVR’d episode of Real Housewives.  I know I’m not alone here.  Even if the junk TV is an every-night thing, I try to limit the ice cream part to just a couple times a week.  However, if I had an endless supply of Talenti Gelato, this could become a constant habit.  With all-natural ingredients, no high fructose corn syrup, and grown up flavors like Sea Salt Caramel, Talenti is the perfect end to a crazy day.

About Talenti

There are a lot of gourmet ice creams and gelatos on the market, but Talenti takes it a few steps further, sourcing only the best ingredients and making each batch with care:

We source the globe in order to find the most select ingredients, enhancing our recipes with only natural, raw elements.  Talenti Gelato is made with only freshly pasteurized milk, free of the growth hormones rBGH and rBST.  Talenti uses only extra fine pure sugar, fresh IQF fruit and nuts straight from the growers, real chocolate from Belgium, fresh whole tahitian vanilla beans from Papua New Guinea, select coconuts from the Philipines, and real Argentine dulce de leche.  Additionally, we roast and carmelize our own nuts, use fresh-squeezed lemons, and make our own nut pastes.  No detail is ignored and no shortcuts are taken.

All but one flavor is gluten free and even with all of these luxurious ingredients, the gelatos and sorbets have 30-100% less fat than most ice creams and the calorie counts per serving are on par with your favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavor.

Talenti Gelato and Sorbet Flavors

  • Argentine Dulce De Leche
  • Belgian Milk Chocolate
  • Caramel Cookie Crunch
  • Caribbean Coconut
  • Double Dark Chocolate
  • Cappuccino
  • Mediterranean Mint
  • Sicilian Pistachio
  • Tahitian Vanilla Bean
  • Toasted Almond
  • White Chocolate Raspberry
  • Black Cherry
  • Sea Salt Caramel
  • Lisbon Lemon
  • Roman Raspberry
  • Sonoma Strawberry
  • Hill Country Peach Champagne
  • Blood Orange

Rich Taste at a Middle Class Price

My first bite of the Sea Salt Caramel was wonderful.  The gelato is so rich and creamy that it’s hard to believe that its fat content is so low.  The little chunks of chocolate covered caramel truffles were a tasty surprise and they melted in my mouth.  The saltiness combined with the sweet was amazing.  I also tried the Double Dark Chocolate.  I was intrigued since the product description says that the gelato is made with a “splash of vermouth.”  I didn’t taste anything boozy, but I was again struck by the luxurious feel of the gelato compared to its reasonable fat content and calories.  It felt so sinful but wasn’t really at at all.

I’ll admit that I loved the Double Dark Chocolate so much that I actually searched out more Talenti at my local Wegman’s grocery store.  I wasn’t surprised to find it in the gourmet, all-natural section of the store, but I was surprised to see it at such a great price point! ($4.99/pint – comparable to even Haagen Dazs or Ben & Jerry’s)  I took home a pint of Double Dark Chocolate as well as one of the Roman Raspberry Sorbet.  Last night, I sat down for the premier of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills with a scoop of each and it was a treat to remember.  (The TV show?  Not so much.)

Shop!  Talenti Gelato and Sorbet can be found at a variety of stores, including Wegman’s, Whole Foods, Publix, Kroger, Big Y and Target. You can even order it online (although the grocery store prices seem to be much lower).

Thank you to Talenti Gelato and Sorbet for providing me with samples to review.  The opinions expressed here are solely my own and represent my honest viewpoint.

How Do You Spell “Oops”? B-A-B-Y

by Kate on September 6th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Baby Shopping Guide, Life

Pregnant.

I. Am. Pregnant. With child. Knocked up. Sperminated. KTFU.

How did this happen?

Don’t answer that.

I know how it happened which makes the situation even more ridiculous. I’m in my mid-30s, for crying out loud, much too old for an “oops,” but that’s what we’re having. Indeed, I’m due a matter of months before turning 35, thus narrowly avoiding the wretched term “advanced maternal age.”

Yes, apparently THIS is what happens when you go on a romantic getaway to the Caribbean with your husband when he returns from a long deployment. (Consider yourself warned, Shannon.)

Don’t get me wrong. Just because this baby was not planned does not mean that it is unwanted or unloved. It will be very loved.

But, this pregnancy was not planned. And it will take some time to get over the initial shock. Even at 13 weeks pregnant, having learned of the pregnancy more than two months ago, I am still getting my head around the fact that I am going to have 3 kids!

I am due mid-March, 2012. My son will be 5 and my daughter will be 3. They don’t know yet and we’ll likely put off telling them until I am really showing (though I did “pop” this weekend – a week after the photo below). Oh, and if you’re wondering how we took the 1-2-3 photo without telling them… well, we just did. They each asked what their shirts said, but didn’t ask about the one over my belly.

12 weeks (August 29).

Not only do you get to see a cute shot of my son rocking American Living finery, but you can also see other American Living stylish back to school looks, share your child’s back to school goals and read those of other children. (My son is already doing great on his first goal!)

Rocking American Living Boys Clothes

In my post introducing American Living I shared these photos of my son sporting the brand. He looks so great in the classic polos, khaki shorts and modern denim. He’s worn the clothes several times since these photos were taken (other than the jeans because it’s still too hot), and they all look just as good now as they did the first time he wore them. You really do great quality for the price point.

American Living Girls Fashion

If you’re shopping for a little girl you won’t be disappointed with the clothes from American Living. In addition to classic pieces, there are some really modern finds that are just too great. I’m particularly smitten with the Autumn Sweater Vest. Available in this green and a warm white, the sweater is $25.99 and available in sizes to fit girls 7 to 16 years old.

And can we discuss this Denim Bubble Skirt for $16.99? Love.

For younger girls, I love the Stripe Dress ($19.99).

Shop! American Living is available exclusively at JC Penney, both online and in stores. American Living for kids is available from size 4 through 16. The selection for older kids (7 – 16) offers more variety than for the smaller ones (4 – 6x), but the whole collection shares a cohesive style and all-American appeal.

Win! A $25 American Living {JC Penney} Gift Card to Help with Back to School Clothes Shopping!
