I got a giggle today as my children and I headed to my son’s first dentist appointment. Listening to Kids’ Place Live on satellite radio, we were privy to a conversation with a llama trying to understand the ramifications of a power outage. No computer, no television, no light to read by and so much more. It was a great conversation starter for my daughter and me and we talked about electricity and power outages for the entire 35 minute drive.
With the effects of Hurricane Irene still being felt up and down the East Coast, both my daughter and the llama have learned from others’ hardship. Though we were not affected by Irene, my husband and I currently live in Northwest Florida, known for annual hurricane warnings and large storms. We are in the process of relocating to Central Georgia, known for tornadoes. We’ve had our share of bad weather experiences and were pleased to be able to try the Energizer® Weatheready® Compact Rechargeable LED Light.
This light is one of many in a new line by Energizer and I have to tell you, in addition to serving in an emergency, it is now my everyday flashlight. I love that it is rechargeable and there are no batteries to fuss over. I love that it stays in a plug and is always handy. It is just plain convenient. My husband and I used the flashlight this past weekend as we “camped” in our new house in Georgia. Because I bought the house while my husband was still in Iraq, this was his first time to visit and explore. And explore he did. He has seen every crevice of the home and in between the walls. He used the Weatheready® LED flashlight for his adventures in “2X4 land” and was very pleased with the two light settings and the clear, bluish light it throws.
In addition to being an everyday flashlight, the Weatheready® LED will be a welcome companion in an emergency. Rather than candles, which can pose a significant danger to homes with children, flashlights provide needed light during power outages. With its long-lasting LED technology, the Weatheready® LED is up for the challenge. My husband and I used the flashlight regularly for four days without recharging. While we were not using it constantly, we were very pleased with how long the charge lasted.
Storm & Emergency Preparation
In light of recent events, the following are helpful reminders for storm/emergency preparation:
- keep a box filled with items the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) recommends in the event of a home/weather emergency
- establish a plan for your family and communicate it with each member; practice as necessary
- secure your home if you have time to prepare
- have a pet plan to ensure the safety of animal friends
- keep important medical records, insurance documents and personal family papers/photos accessible.
In the event of a power outage:
- turn off and unplug all unnecessary electronic equipment – when the power comes back on, a power surge could cause damage
- leave one light switched on, so when the power comes back on you’ll have a visual cue
- do not use candles, the potential risk for fire is great
- keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed
- if the power is out for more than one day, use a cooler with ice to keep cold items at safe temperatures.
To Buy or Not to Buy
To Buy… The Energizer® Weatheready® Compact Rechargeable LED Light is a welcome change from standard battery-powered flashlights. When your two-year-old leaves in on under his big sister’s bed and wears down the charge, you simply plug it back in and it is ready to go without an extra errand to obtain batteries. The clear, bluish light fully illuminates surfaces making for a great view in low-to-no light and lasts a long time on a single charge.
Not To Buy… The Energizer® Weatheready® Compact Rechargeable LED Light is more expensive than some battery-powered flashlights, but “outshines” them with convenience and clear light. Sorry for the bad pun.
Shop! Energizer has a collection of flashlights designed just for weather emergencies worth checking out. The Energizer® Weatheready® Compact Rechargeable LED Light has an MSRP of $15.99 and is available at national retailers and our affiliate Amazon.
