Prince Lionheart Soft Booster Seat {Review & Giveaway}

by Kate on August 31st, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways, Reviews

Prince Lionheart has a wide range of innovative products for families and I’m happy to be sharing some with you throughout the year as a member of the brand’s Elite Writers Group. One of the products that I’ve had my eye on for a while is the Soft Booster Seat. It’s perfect for transitioning a toddler from a high chair to sitting solo in a “grown-up seat”.

Soft Booster Seat Features

  • Perfect for meal-time, TV-time or anytime at home!
  • Waterproof, portable and slip resistant!
  • Great for outdoors…and indoors!
  • For 12 mos.+
  • Seat Weight: 2.7 lbs

Soft Booster Seat Review

The Soft Booster Seat is made of light density foam that is comfy for your child’s bottom and easy for you to clean. The seat has no seams, buckles or joints meaning you can wipe it down and it’s clean – no fussing with removing covers or wrestling to get into crevices. The Booster is super lightweight so it’s easy to move from chair to chair or even take along with you when you’re not eating at home.

We’ve used a similar product and I’ve noticed a few differences between the two products. The Prince Lionheart Booster Seat has a higher back, which is helpful for younger children. The bottom where your child sits is slight ridges that I’m guessing are for comfort while the other booster we have is mostly smooth but for two indentations for legs. The bottom of the Seat that rests on the chair is primarily open and it does seem to slide a bit more than the other chair.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The Prince Lionheart Soft Booster Seat is a great way to give your tot a boost while sitting on a regular chair at the dinner table.  The soft foam material is easy to clean and soft on your tot’s bottom.

Or Not to Buy… While I think this is more likely a reflection of my daughter’s independent streak than the chair, she doesn’t really like to sit on it. I wish it was harder for her to remove it from the seat herself – maybe if it had a strap to attach to the seat? But, that would take away from some of its benefits (sleek look, easy to clean).

Shop! The Prince Lionheart Soft Booster Seat is available in Mint and Orange for $31.99 at Target.

Win! A Soft Booster Seat from Prince Lionheart.

Partum Me?! Instincts

by Laura on August 31st, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Partum Me

I’d first like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support after last week’s post.  Beyond the comments here at The Shopping Mama, I got emails and text messages that truly made me feel like I was being heard.  They also made me realize that I have a few readers who actually look for my post each week, which made me feel even more special.  I’m glad that I’m writing things that engage you and hope that you’ll continue to read (and comment!) often.

If you are one of those regular readers, you might notice that this week’s post is a bit delayed.  As a fundraiser for a big  university, I spend a good amount of my work time traveling.  I normally write each week’s post in the couple of days before it is posted, but Hurricane Irene made it hard to get much done on Sunday or Monday.  And yesterday, I was in Washington DC for work, but the trip yielded a story of mommyhood that I thought I’d share.  When I’m in the office, I have a handy dandy electric breast pump that I use three times a day, but when I’m on the road, I carry a Medela Harmony hand pump and two bottles in a small breast milk cooler.   When I arrived at Union Station in DC yesterday morning, I ducked into the bathroom (unfortunately usually the only place I can find to pump while traveling) and started to assemble my pump when I realized I was missing a part!  It was this.  The smallest part of the entire operation, but without it the pump is useless. After my initial reaction involving lots of curse words and some foot stomping, I turned to my handy smart phone.  I needed to get from Union Station to my first meeting in Georgetown with a stop to pick up little yellow valves in between…all within 40 minutes.  DC has no…I repeat, NO…Targets or Kmarts in the downtown area.  I would have even broken my lifelong boycott of Walmart for this emergency, but no dice.

I Googled furiously until I found  The Breastfeeding Center of Greater Washington.  It was located in Foggy Bottom – sort of on my way to Georgetown – but I couldn’t tell if it was just an educational facility that sold stuff only online and there didn’t seem to be any set business hours.  With only an address, I made a beeline.  Sure enough they were open and had a pretty extensive inventory that included my much-needed valves.  The ladies who work there and one other customer had a great laugh when I told them my story.  And I found sweet relief just a few minutes later in the bathroom of a Georgetown Barnes & Noble. So…thank you to the wonderful and patient ladies at The Breastfeeding Center and to Steve Jobs for inventing the iPhone.

That little story sort of ties into the theme of this week’s post: the instinctual things we do as protective parents that we never dreamed we’d do before we had kids.  My panic levels were tested twice last week as the East Coast was hit with both an earthquake and a hurricane – and if you were in the Philly area during the storm, a couple tornadoes too. On Earthquake Day, Charlie was at home with his dad so I tried to continue my work day after the tremors were over.  Within two hours of the quake I was headed home, just needing to see Charlie and know that he was okay.  As news outlets started encouraging people to buy supplies like water and canned food for Hurricane Irene, I worried more about getting water for Charlie’s bottles than whether or not we had enough tuna and crackers.  Living in the northeast, I’ve been through some good blizzards and a couple tropical storms, and I’ve never really felt the need to rush out for supplies or to batten down the hatches around the house.  But this time was different because we had Charlie to worry about.  Everything in our backyard was tied down and secured, our water supply was plentiful, and we had more chips, spaghetti-o’s, and canned chili than we could possibly need.  I even went out and got an extra propane tank for our grill in case we had a longstanding power outage and had to cook food from our freezer before it spoiled.  On the night of the storm, I didn’t sleep a wink.  I sat on the couch, with Charlie sleeping soundly in my arms, watching the Tornado Warnings flash across the screen, poised to sprint down the stairs to the basement.  And yes, as the wind howled for hours on end and the rain water started to leak into our kitchen and destroy a portion of the interior wall, I cried.

We were luckier than some others once the storm was gone.  We had electricity and our basement did not get flooded.  The damage to our house was intense but fixable.  I have relatives in NJ who still don’t have power and are under a boil water advisory.  Entire towns in New England and upstate NY are all but washed away.  Despite that, what surprised me most about the storm was my reaction to it.  While I’d definitely qualify a lot of how I felt as panic – mostly over keeping Charlie safe – there was also an underlying determination.  I was scared but I was going to fight like heck to make sure my little guy got through it.  Underneath it all, I just knew that I would do what needed to be done for Charlie.  It’s a sort of steady self-confidence that felt new to me.  And I liked it!

When did you first catch a glimpse of your protective instinct as a parent?  If you are east coaster, how did you do during Hurricane Irene?

Back to School with Stephen Joseph

Just when I think Stephen Joseph Gifts can’t get any cooler, a new collection gives me the “Oh so cutes.” You know, when you say, “Oh that is SO cute!” and then you start brainstorming why your child MUST have it. If you’re on the hunt for a fabulous backpack you simply must have – for your child, of course – Stephen Joseph some great options.

Quilted Backpacks

I will always and forever recommend the fabulous Quilted Backpacks from Stephen Joseph. Both my kids have one and we use them all the time. They are just begging to be personalized with your child’s name or initials.

Personalization tip: When we’re personalizing Stephen Joseph, we order from The Crazy Dazy. They have a great Stephen Joseph selection and you can save 10% off your order with the code THESHOPPINGMAMA.

Go-Go Bag

When my son entered a more structured preschool program he needed a backpack with a little more structure than the Quilted Backpack. The Go-Go Bag has been the perfect solution. It’s a great size to send folders and paperwork to a from school, but it maintains the fun Stephen Joseph look and the size is appropriate for a preschooler or even kindergartener. These bags can also be personalized, which, of course, we love.

Rolling Backpacks

Made of easy to clean vinyl material and with adjustable straps and a retractable handle, this rolling backpack is great for school or a weekend away. Don’t you just love the “3d” elements? For example, the wings on the airplane backpack and the ears and wings on the owl? So cute!

Lunch Bags

Stephen Joseph also has a great selection of lunch bags and lunch sacks for kids. From left to right, check out the Lunxhboxes, Snack Sacs and Signature Stephen Joseph Lunch Sacs.

Energizer Weatheready Compact Rechargeable LED Light {Review & Giveaway}

by Shannon on August 30th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  For Mama, Giveaways

I got a giggle today as my children and I headed to my son’s first dentist appointment. Listening to Kids’ Place Live on satellite radio, we were privy to a conversation with a llama trying to understand the ramifications of a power outage. No computer, no television, no light to read by and so much more. It was a great conversation starter for my daughter and me and we talked about electricity and power outages for the entire 35 minute drive.

With the effects of Hurricane Irene still being felt up and down the East Coast, both my daughter and the llama have learned from others’ hardship. Though we were not affected by Irene, my husband and I currently live in Northwest Florida, known for annual hurricane warnings and large storms. We are in the process of relocating to Central Georgia, known for tornadoes. We’ve had our share of bad weather experiences and were pleased to be able to try the Energizer® Weatheready® Compact Rechargeable LED Light.

This light is one of many in a new line by Energizer and I have to tell you, in addition to serving in an emergency, it is now my everyday flashlight. I love that it is rechargeable and there are no batteries to fuss over. I love that it stays in a plug and is always handy. It is just plain convenient. My husband and I used the flashlight this past weekend as we “camped” in our new house in Georgia. Because I bought the house while my husband was still in Iraq, this was his first time to visit and explore. And explore he did. He has seen every crevice of the home and in between the walls. He used the Weatheready® LED flashlight for his adventures in “2X4 land” and was very pleased with the two light settings and the clear, bluish light it throws.

In addition to being an everyday flashlight, the Weatheready® LED will be a welcome companion in an emergency. Rather than candles, which can pose a significant danger to homes with children, flashlights provide needed light during power outages. With its long-lasting LED technology, the Weatheready® LED is up for the challenge. My husband and I used the flashlight regularly for four days without recharging. While we were not using it constantly, we were very pleased with how long the charge lasted.

Storm & Emergency Preparation

In light of recent events, the following are helpful reminders for storm/emergency preparation:

  • keep a box filled with items the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) recommends in the event of a home/weather emergency
  • establish a plan for your family and communicate it with each member; practice as necessary
  • secure your home if you have time to prepare
  • have a pet plan to ensure the safety of animal friends
  • keep important medical records, insurance documents and personal family papers/photos accessible.

In the event of a power outage:

  • turn off and unplug all unnecessary electronic equipment – when the power comes back on, a power surge could cause damage
  • leave one light switched on, so when the power comes back on you’ll have a visual cue
  • do not use candles, the potential risk for fire is great
  • keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed
  • if the power is out for more than one day, use a cooler with ice to keep cold items at safe temperatures.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The Energizer® Weatheready® Compact Rechargeable LED Light is a welcome change from standard battery-powered flashlights. When your two-year-old leaves in on under his big sister’s bed and wears down the charge, you simply plug it back in and it is ready to go without an extra errand to obtain batteries. The clear, bluish light fully illuminates surfaces making for a great view in low-to-no light and lasts a long time on a single charge.

Not To Buy… The Energizer® Weatheready® Compact Rechargeable LED Light is more expensive than some battery-powered flashlights, but “outshines” them with convenience and clear light. Sorry for the bad pun.

Shop! Energizer has a collection of flashlights designed just for weather emergencies worth checking out. The Energizer® Weatheready® Compact Rechargeable LED Light has an MSRP of $15.99 and is available at national retailers and our affiliate Amazon.

Don’t get left in the dark…

Win! An Energizer Weatheready Flashlight.

Little Looster Booster: Unique Booster Perfect for Toddlers

by Kate on August 30th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Reviews, Toddler

We had a long road potty training my daughter. She is stubborn, willful, energetic and easily distracted. To say she has a mind of her own is an understatement. I realized that she is finicky. She doesn’t like my husband to take her to the bathroom in public because she doesn’t want to go in “da boyz room”. She wants to be comfortable and independent at home and the Little Looster booster has provided the boost she needed.

Meet the Little Looster

The Little Looster Booster has come to make toilet training easier and more affordable than ever. The Little Looster is the brainchild of smart, savvy Mom-preneur, Monica Mylet. She conceived the design and need for the Little Looster after parenting three children through the potty training process.

Fresh on the market, Little Looster is a revolutionary, uniquely-designed potty training accessory that provides the perfect support for little legs and fits discreetly around the base of your Loo. All grown-ups can use the toilet while standing or sitting without needing to move it out of the way. With the Little Looster, parents and caregivers no longer have to clean out those tiny potty chairs or fuss with a step stool that inevitably clutters the bathroom.

Little Looster Features

  • Provides total comfort & leg support for years of use
  • Promotes Confidence- no more fears of failing in
  • Allows children to have their hands free at all times
  • Now everyone can use the toilet
  • Doesn’t need to be moved for adults

Little Looster Review

The thing about the Little Looster is that it looks kind of funny – it’s definitely unique and unlike any other booster we’ve used – but it makes perfect sense. When I was originally trying to decide if we should buy a potty stool, I heard too many tales of little ones trying to balance on small stools and taking a little tumble with pants around the ankles. The Little Looster eases this concern because of its size. It literally wraps around the bottom of the toilet, providing a lot of support for little feet.

The Little Looster is larger than other potty stools, but we’ve been using it in a small bathroom and it hasn’t been a problem. It really only adds a couple inches around the bottom of the toilet. Another thoughtful feature is that the Little Looster has cut outs shapes so grown ups can comfortably use the same toilet without removing the booster. The white design is nice and neutral so it doesn’t draw any more attention to the giant potty stool than necessary. Oh, and since it’s in the bathroom, it’s also totally worth mentioning that it cleans very easily.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The Little Looster is a great booster for children toilet training and shorter toddlers who can use a little support. I really like that it provides support around to the sides of the potty, where a child’s feet naturally go, rather just a little square of support in front of the toilet.

Or Not to Buy… This is on the large size, so if you have a very little bathroom it might look like a little much.

Shop! The Little Looster Booster Step Stool is available at numerous online retailers, including our affiliate Amazon for $34.99.

ShooShoos Site-wide Sale!

by Malia on August 27th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Shopping, Shopping

We really like ShooShoos adorable soft soled and flexible soled shoes here at The Shopping Mama. The shoes are great for baby’s growing feet and development and how can you not love the fact that the company was founded to support disadvantaged communities in Cape Town (and still does)? (You can read more about these shoes in Kate’s ShooShoos review and Laura’s ShooShoo’s review.) Plus they are really cute!

As much as we love these good for baby, good for the world shoes, they get a little pricey sometimes and budgets get tight. That’s why we really love when they go on sale. And right now you can save up to 50% when you buy 2 or more pairs of shoes at ShooShoosusa.com.

I’m loving the little girl butterfly shoes. I currently can’t pick which I like better, the Pink Smiley Butterfly with Light Flexi Rubber Soles for $24.95:

Or the Purple Butterfly Soft Soled Leather Shoes for $17.95:

I also love these little kicks for my guy. For a red-head he looks adorable in orange and these Sand and Orange Smiley Light Flexi Rubber Soled shoes for $26.95 would go great with a lot of his outfits.Winter boots, summer sandals and everything in-between is on sale, so check it out. I may just have to get the pink AND the purple…or the red, ooh or grey with silver. Of course I have to buy two to get the sales price anyway… Man, this having a girl thing is tough on the pocketbook.

Happy Shopping! Are there any styles you love?
