Mama, Read THIS One! Stop Snoring, Bernard

Every Sunday, we’ll focus on one of our favorite books for kids. Think of it as a peek into our story time and find out about what book our kids are saying, “Mama, read THIS one!”

I think perhaps my kids are trying to tell me they would like a pet because many of their current favorite books involve animals. Today’s favorite, Stop Snoring, Bernard! by Zachariah Ohora, is no different. The book centers around a sweet otter living in a zoo and all he wants to do is sleep.

Bernard loves curling up to go to sleep. But there is one little problem. Bernard snores…LOUDLY! So loudly that he keeps all of the otters awake during naptime. So loudly that Grumpy Giles tells Bernard to move his snoring somewhere else!

Sad and lonely, Bernard tries sleeping in new places far away from the other otters: in a lake, in puddles, in a fountain. But no matter where he tries to nap, somebody complains. He just wants to hear two words: “Goodnight, Bernard!”

We’ve read this book so much that tonight my son “read” (memorized and told the story by memory) this book to his little sister. He went on to tell me his favorite part of the book is “all doz animals yell ‘Stop storing, Bernard’ and he jus wants to sweep!” Because we go to the zoo quite often, I really like seeing Bernard explore the zoo looking for different places to sleep. He visits alligators, giraffes, elephants, and bats.

Luckily no one in our house is a snorer, but it’s still easy to relate to Bernard who just wants to sleep. I might see it differently if my husband had a snoring problem, but I’m glad Grumpy Giles comes around, welcomes Bernard back to with the otters and puts up with Bernard’s snoring.

Shop! Stop Snoring, Bernard! is available in The Shopping Mama’s Amazon Books We Love store for $11.98.
