Shooshoos: Handmade Leather Shoes for a Good Cause

At 7 weeks my little guy is not in need of shoes, but since he’s a houdini when it comes to getting out of socks (and swaddles), baby shoes are a welcome addition to his wardrobe.  I was pleasantly surprised that ShooShoos leather baby shoes survived a photo shoot for this review, a tummy time session, and a wriggly pre-sleep crying fit without falling off.

About ShooShoos

Founded in 1996 to make the best leather baby shoes available,  Shooshoos is a family run business based in Cape Town.  We own our own factories and no shoes leave our warehouses unless they have been individually checked by us for both leather quality and construction.  Shooshoos also has its own design and testing facility where stringent tests are carried out on all materials and their assembly before a new product is offered to our customers.  95% of our shoe components are sourced in South Africa and every shoe that we distribute is made in South Africa.  We presently export to 21 countries, supply some of the worlds best baby groups i.e. Mothercare and have won numerous Baby Parenting awards for best new product. Both the soft soles baby shoes and our flexi soles are made in our own factories or by small teams of woman from our local disadvantaged communities. Most of our employees have been part of the happy Shooshoos team for over 10 years and take great pride in the beautiful baby shoos they produce.  Our leathers are eco friendly and have been tested by our South African and the UK Bureau of Standards to ensure they contain no harmful substances. We use a selection of the best bovine nappa’s, and suede leathers.  All our products and packaging can be fully recycled and our carbon footprint is minimal.

Baby Shoes for Baby Feet

Shooshoos makes soft soled shoes for the littlest ones and harder-soled versions for the little ones who are upright and mobile.  I liked that the baby version had an elasticized ankle that kept the shoes securely on our squirmy guy’s feet.  The tab on the back also made it much easier to get them on while he was moving around.  Plenty of width and extra length in the shoe means that he has room to grow into them, and that a bigger baby with chubbier feet would be comfortable in them.  The website showed a wide variety of styles which were reflective of the current sneaker styles that are “in” for grownups.   I look forward to ordering some of the toddler-sized shoes when our kiddo is bigger, since the rubber soles look sturdy but not too rigid.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… These cute shoes have quality construction and an added bonus is that the company supports its local economy and tries to be as green as possible.

Not to Buy… As previously mentioned, sneakers are not a necessity for the littlest of babies, but good fashion is!  Some of the styles are a bit pricey at around $30, but almost all styles are currently on sale and the discounts are steep.

Shop! ShooShoos are available in a wide variety of styles and colors, for both girls and boys age 0-28 months.  Check out the sale before it’s over! Keep up with the latest ShooShoos news on Facebook and Twitter.

We received a sample product for review.
