Colors, Colors Everywhere – Rainbow Goodies

by Kate on June 8th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Shopping

I have a theory…stick with me on this: When you walk into a store with a beautiful display of stacked t-shirts, they are mesmerizing. Stacked so neatly with all the colors from the hot reds and yellows to the soothing blues and greens, they are so striking. Then. You pull out just one and hold it up. Is anyone else as disappointed as I am? One blue t-shirt just doesn’t have the same impact.

I always claim my favorite color is apple green, but as I look around my house at the things that I love most and had to have – the rainbow is what I see.

I bought this birthday card by Papyrus at my local Target. It is for no one. It sits in front of my computer and makes me happy. Can you see the rainbow jewels affixed to it?

My calendar. I know, real high tech.

My favorite magazine cover – EVER.

And the ultimate inspiration in my kitchen…my rainbow mixing bowls.

Colorful Shopping

If you are like me and draw your inspiration from all the colors at once, maybe you or someone you love will like one of the following rainbow pretties.

Papyrus greeting cards are available in a range of styles and prices online. You may also find a store locator if you prefer to browse (and see those sparklies) in person.

This Pacifier Snugglie is available on Etsy for $10.00. Etsy is a treasure trove of rainbow products. Simply type “rainbow” in the search field and observe the beauty.

This rainbow wooden tunnel toy available at The Playstore for $32.95 feeds a child’s imagination.

This little Stuffed Toy Owl combines my two favorite loves – rainbow and argyle. Available on Etsy for $26.00.

I’m not high tech (remember the calendar above?), but I do have an iPad and would love this Rainbow Zig Zag Cover. Available on Etsy for $22.00.

I wish I’d discovered these Children’s Play Cloths earlier. This package of beautifully hued cloths are available on Etsy for $37.00.

I happen to own this set of rainbow mixing bowls as I mentioned above. They are a huge splurge, but I didn’t buy them for myself. I covet them so much, we don’t use them. The finish on them is so beautiful and they are so lightweight. Available at Williams-Sonoma for $179.95.

Manilla: A Free Household Account Organization Site

by Kate on June 7th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Blogging

During the past nine months of my husband’s deployment, I’ve achieved a new level of disorganization. It’s been really bad. I had actually hoped the opposite would happen – that I’d have more control and knowledge about all of our household accounts and bills. I have to think if Manilla had existed last fall when my husband deployed I would have been in a much better position, with more knowledge and control of all of our accounts.

What Is Manilla?

Manilla is a free web based service that helps consumers better manage all of their household accounts, including financial, utilities, subscriptions and travel rewards programs, in one secure place online. Under a single password, Manilla provides customers with an automated, organized view of all of their account information, text and/or email reminders to pay bills and unlimited storage of account documents that Manilla has seamlessly retrieved for the consumer.

Manilla: How It Works

1. Link accounts and loyalty programs, get an organized view with one password

2. View, pay and be reminded of statements and bills while avoiding late fee

3. Get copies of your bills and statements delivered online and enjoy unlimited storage

Online Account Organizer

I’m actually pretty embarrassed by how out of touch I was with all of our finances and accounts. Whether your spouse is travels a lot or is home all the time, it’s important for us moms to know what’s going on. Heaven forbid anything happen, we need to know what’s what and have an understanding on everything from the super important things (hello, mortgage!) to the convenient (airline mileage). Manilla is a great and secure online location with an easy to understand interface that truly makes it easy to get updates at a glance. No need to pour throw paper bills or read line by line of a check book – see it all in one place at Manilla. What does that mean for me? A complete understanding and handle on the accounts and extra time every day.

Organize & Enter to Win $1,000

I got a sneak peek into Manilla, a new household account organization site, and I want to share the scoop with you! And the best news? In June they are doing an amazing giveaway where one lucky new user will win $1,000 cash to pay their bills!

Get organized and be entered to win $1,000 cash to pay your bills!

How to Enter:

1. Sign up with Manilla

2. Link one or more household, financial, subscription or rewards account within Manilla

3. Come back and leave a comment telling me you signed up and how Manilla can save you time!

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Manilla. The opinions and text are all mine. Contest runs June 7-30, 2011. Winner must be signed up with Manilla with at least one account linked to win. A random winner will be selected by June 31, 2011.

Partum Me?! The grandparent dilemma

by Laura on June 7th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Partum Me

My husband and I are born-and-raised East Coasters.  Our families have long, rich histories in the Mid-Atlantic and New England states.  Accordingly, the majority of our family members live within a reasonable drive from our home.  In fact, the lion’s share of our relatives live in the Philly metro or New Jersey.  However, my husband spent most of his childhood in a town that was a few hours drive from his family, while I grew up in the same town as my maternal grandparents.  He didn’t have daily contact with his closest relatives, while I spent a good deal of my free time with my grandparents.  In fact, I credit my grandfather as being one of the most inspirational people in my life, even more so than my own parents.  I also had the added fun of having my dad’s family just a half an hour away on a large family-owned lakefront property where each branch of the family had a house that was teeming with cousins all summer long.  I enjoyed being close to my family and often feel disconnected from my loved ones even though Philly is only a two hour drive from “The Lake.”  I find myself practically jumping out of my skin with excitement whenever we make the drive to see my brother, my dad, and my closest cousins.  I can’t wait for the days when Charlie will be running around in the woods and belly flopping into the lake with the members of his generation.

Me and my "Gramps" - I used to love wearing his hats!

You would think that with my utter love for my family, I wouldn’t be driven so crazy by grandparents who want to be uber-involved with Charlie, but I am.  I’ve spent the last week stewing and feeling as if every thing I do is being criticized or that there is going to be some longstanding competition for Charlie’s affection as he continues to grow.  I’m sure that sleep deprivation and hormones are also playing a big role in how I feel, but these feelings stem from a series of recent visits with one set of Charlie’s grandparents who happen to live very nearby.  As most little babies tend to do, Charlie sleeps a lot, and when he wakes up he is usually crying and hungry.  His grandparents, however, seem to have forgotten that this is how babies work and they insist on being allowed to hold him even as he writhes and screams for food because it’ll “just be for a minute” and they “never get to hold him.”  They’ve actually kept track of how many times I’ve “let” them hold him, even though we’ve explained that he’s usually asleep when they arrive and waking up for food as they leave.  Even if they agree to wait until he’s done eating, they hover over the two of us as he nurses, waiting to pounce as soon as he lifts his head from under the hooter hider.  It’s nerve-wracking and I think that Charlie senses it too, especially since he and I normally have a long cuddling session after he nurses.

There are other extenuating circumstances that I won’t detail here, but even in their absence, I’ve become fed up with the criticism and score-keeping.  Nonetheless, I don’t want to be the parent who cuts off her child from his grandparents, nor do I want to constantly be snapping at them to back off in front of my son.  My husband and I are committed to creating a peaceful, supportive, and positive home for our son since we didn’t always have that when we were kids, but I worry that this situation is going to make that goal an increasingly difficult one to fulfill.

The added challenge is that Charlie’s grandmother was recently diagnosed with a serious illness that will require extensive treatment.  Seeing her grandson cheers her up and inspires her to fight for her life so that she can see Charlie grow up.  I wouldn’t want to take that sort of joy out of her life.  I just wish we could find some sort of common ground where it is understood that we are Charlie’s parents, we make the decisions, and no one is preventing them from connecting with their grandson.

Please share your stories of how you handled the Grandparent Dilemma with your babies!

Coffee Breaks for All Mamas!

by Kate on June 7th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Life

It seems that barely any two days are the same in my home. No matter how well I plan and schedule, something always comes up to throw a wrench in my routine. No matter what’s going on, though, there is one ritual that I cannot do without: my coffee break.

Did you know that “coffee break” is in the dictionary? It’s a noun meaning, “a break from work for coffee, a snack, etc.” Wikipedia points out that some employers even pay for coffee breaks. While my employers (my children) do not have the means to compensate me for my coffee break (or for anything for that matter), they do acknowledge the importance of my coffee break. And, mamas, you should do the same, too.

As I mentioned, no two days are the same in my house so some days I brew a cup in the Keurig at 8 AM and don’t get to drink it until noon. Never the less, it’s the five minutes or so of time to myself in the kitchen that I crave and covet. I love the whole process of my coffee break: picking a K-Cup flavor, adding some flavor, spooning in sugar and adding cream. (I like my coffee light and sweet, thank you very much.) And then, that first sip? Oh, it’s heaven. Even when the coffee is cold.

Whether the cup of coffee is first thing in the morning to get a much needed jolt of caffeine or in the heat of the afternoon sun, it’s important to me. It’s my coffee break from the work of being a mom. We all deserve a break and we need to do a better job of making it a priority. It may not seem like much, but five minutes of peace can do wonders for our overworked minds and bodies.

I say Coffee Breaks for all mamas! Who’s with me?

Shooshoos: Handmade Leather Shoes for a Good Cause

by Laura on June 6th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Baby, Reviews

At 7 weeks my little guy is not in need of shoes, but since he’s a houdini when it comes to getting out of socks (and swaddles), baby shoes are a welcome addition to his wardrobe.  I was pleasantly surprised that ShooShoos leather baby shoes survived a photo shoot for this review, a tummy time session, and a wriggly pre-sleep crying fit without falling off.

About ShooShoos

Founded in 1996 to make the best leather baby shoes available,  Shooshoos is a family run business based in Cape Town.  We own our own factories and no shoes leave our warehouses unless they have been individually checked by us for both leather quality and construction.  Shooshoos also has its own design and testing facility where stringent tests are carried out on all materials and their assembly before a new product is offered to our customers.  95% of our shoe components are sourced in South Africa and every shoe that we distribute is made in South Africa.  We presently export to 21 countries, supply some of the worlds best baby groups i.e. Mothercare and have won numerous Baby Parenting awards for best new product. Both the soft soles baby shoes and our flexi soles are made in our own factories or by small teams of woman from our local disadvantaged communities. Most of our employees have been part of the happy Shooshoos team for over 10 years and take great pride in the beautiful baby shoos they produce.  Our leathers are eco friendly and have been tested by our South African and the UK Bureau of Standards to ensure they contain no harmful substances. We use a selection of the best bovine nappa’s, and suede leathers.  All our products and packaging can be fully recycled and our carbon footprint is minimal.

Baby Shoes for Baby Feet

Shooshoos makes soft soled shoes for the littlest ones and harder-soled versions for the little ones who are upright and mobile.  I liked that the baby version had an elasticized ankle that kept the shoes securely on our squirmy guy’s feet.  The tab on the back also made it much easier to get them on while he was moving around.  Plenty of width and extra length in the shoe means that he has room to grow into them, and that a bigger baby with chubbier feet would be comfortable in them.  The website showed a wide variety of styles which were reflective of the current sneaker styles that are “in” for grownups.   I look forward to ordering some of the toddler-sized shoes when our kiddo is bigger, since the rubber soles look sturdy but not too rigid.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… These cute shoes have quality construction and an added bonus is that the company supports its local economy and tries to be as green as possible.

Not to Buy… As previously mentioned, sneakers are not a necessity for the littlest of babies, but good fashion is!  Some of the styles are a bit pricey at around $30, but almost all styles are currently on sale and the discounts are steep.

Shop! ShooShoos are available in a wide variety of styles and colors, for both girls and boys age 0-28 months.  Check out the sale before it’s over! Keep up with the latest ShooShoos news on Facebook and Twitter.

We received a sample product for review.

Learning Resources Pretend & Play Ice Cream Shop (Review + Giveaway)

by Kate on June 6th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways, Reviews, Toys

Throughout the summer we’ll be sharing some great toys from Learning Resources that are hands-on and educational. The best part is that the toys and games are so fun and engaging that your children won’t notice (or care) that they’re learning in the process. The selection and assortment of toys at Learning Resources is great with toys for kids as young as 2 and up through 8+.

Now, I don’t know about your family, but for mine ice cream is a summer staple. So my kids are putting their real world experience into imaginary play with the Pretend & Play Ice Cream Shop.

Pretend & Play Ice Cream Shop

Here’s a sweet way to get imaginations churning. Plenty of colorful pieces encourage creative thinking, sharing, teamwork, building connections and other important social skills. Includes four scoops of ice cream, two cones, two ice cream dishes, two spoons, a banana that “splits,” a scooper, apron, write & wipe menu card and chocolate syrup bottle that “squirts” mess-free pretend chocolate.

I’m pretty sure if I ever worked at an ice cream store I’d gain about a million pounds. Lucky for my kids and me, we can play ice cream shop at home and not gain a pound or rot our teeth. The Ice Cream Shop is a VERY thorough set with 15 (yes, 15!) pieces. It’s really an elaborate set with everything you can possibly imagine. Because there are so many pieces it’s very easy to play with multiple kids. The set is recommended for kids ages 3 to 5, but my 2.5 year old daughter loves getting in on the action. She is at a great age for pretend play like this and says, “What you like today?” and then clumsily prepares the ice cream sundae or cone I order.

One of my kids’ favorites is the chocolate syrup, which is actually a brown string coming from the bottle. It really pretty cute.

In addition to learning the ins and outs of the ice cream business, The Pretend & Play Ice Cream helps develop hand-eye coordination and cooperation. My kids can always pick up a thing or two about cooperation!

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… My kids and I both really enjoy the Pretend & Play Ice Cream Shop set. They like playing ice cream store and, truthfully, I love playing with them. The set is so thoughtful and complete that kids have everything they need to make ice cream sundaes, cones and fun.

Or Not to Buy… The Shop set comes with a container for the ice cream scoops, but I’d also love a larger container to hold all of the pieces.

Shop! The Pretend & Play Ice Cream Shop by Learning Resources is available directly from the online shop, Amazon and specialty stores nationwide.
