To follow up on my last post about breastfeeding, Charlie is still happily nursing and we continue to supplement when necessary. I have managed to get my supply to the point where he only needs formula during the later hours of the day, when my milk production decreases. I have become very attached to my rented hospital grade pump, as it has helped me to build up a very small supply of frozen milk for those first few days at daycare.
When I had the opportunity to review the Tommee Tippee breast pump, I was admittedly skeptical because I’ve heard that most commercial pumps are less than stellar for those of us who need to maximize our supply. On the other hand, I was also excited to try it out because we use Tommee Tippee bottles and we are big fans of their products. Plus, this pump allows you to pump the milk right into a Tommee Tippee bottle.
About the closer to nature Electric Breast Pump
The closer to nature breast pump is from Tommee Tippee, a UK-based company that recently came to the US. Their products are available exclusively through Babies R Us.
Whether moving from breast to bottle, combining the two or choosing to bottle feed, our revolutionary bottle and nipple is your baby’s very best option. Intuitively designed for easier and more comfortable expressing. Researched and developed by Moms and breastfeeding experts. [Our] unique expressable system lets you express, protect, prepare and feed in one easy system, no transferring, no waste. The soft silicone cup with innovative massaging ripples mimics a baby’s natural feeding action, giving mom maximum comfort. Four suction levels allow for efficient expression, controlled by mom to suit her needs and comfort. Ideal for moms that regularly express.
The pump, like all Tommee Tippee products, is BPA free. It can be operated either with batteries or the electric adapter that is included. It also comes with a storage container that doubles as a microwave sanitizer for all parts that come in contact with mom and baby.
The Perfect Pump for Casual Use
My biggest worry about using this pump was that it would not yield as much milk as my heavy duty hospital-grade pump. But I used it a few times, at different hours of the day, and got basically the same yield that I expected to get with my super Medela. My nipples go through 8-10 feedings and almost as many pumpings per day, so the soft silicone cup was a welcome relief to the occasional soreness that comes with the job. It gently contracted but still had enough suction to extract milk. The best thing about this pump, if you are a Tommee Tippee bottle user like we are, is that it pumps directly into Tommee Tippee bottles. Perfect for times when a mom wants to pump a bottle for someone else to feed to her little one.
To Buy or Not to Buy
To Buy… This is a great, compact pump that would travel well for a mom on the go, either for work or for pleasure. As I said above, it gets good suction without being uncomfortable and it coordinates with the Tommee Tippee bottle system for utmost convenience. This might be a negative for those who have already invested in another bottle system, but new moms or moms-to-be should consider using Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature nipples if they wish to use a system that mimics human nipples and combats colic.
Or Not to Buy… Oh how I wish they would make this pump in a double version so that both breasts can be pumped at the same time! This one factor makes it difficult to recommend this product for the every-day-pumping mom, but it is definitely the perfect back-up pump for irregular travel or part-time use. I plan to keep it at home and leave my double pump at the office, where I will do most of my pumping upon my return to work.
Shop! This item retails for $149.99 at Babies R Us, which has the exclusive rights to all Tommee Tippee products in the US. The price is comparable to other brand-name pumps on the market.
