As a new mother, I have become keenly aware of the superpowers of a good swaddle. While in the hospital, whenever Charlie went down to the nursery for a weight check, he would come back perfectly swaddled and oh-so-calm. I finally had one of the nurses walk me through the exact steps for the perfect wrap and now I’m a pro! And, lately I’ve been using the new SwaddleDesigns SwaddleDuo.
About SwaddleDesigns
Founded by Lynette Damir, RN, in 2002, SwaddleDesigns was the first company to introduce the large square swaddling blanket to the US and many countries around the world. SwaddleDesigns is known for their premium quality fabric, fabulous colors and prints, decorative edge, and the innovative 123 Swaddle® instructional label that helps new parents master the art of swaddling. SwaddleDesigns swaddling blankets are perfect for swaddling and have many uses such as a privacy throw for breastfeeding moms, a tummy time play mat and a cover over the stroller. SwaddleDesigns exclusively offers swaddling blankets with swaddling instructions sewn to the edge of the blanket (patent pending). Parents tell us how much they love our blankets and find the pictorial swaddling instructions at their fingertips very helpful.
Swaddling for all temperatures – the SwaddleDuo
SwaddleDuo combines SwaddleDesigns’ two receiving blankets in one set, which comes in a wonderful gift box. The purpose of the two blankets is to provide options for swaddling based on local climate, as over- or under-heating a baby can be a contributing factor to SIDS. Recently, the weather in Philadelphia has been erratic, so we’ve had the opportunity to use both of the blankets. The Ultimate Receiving Blanket® is a lightweight premium cotton flannel blanket – for moderate to cooler environmental temperatures. It was perfectly soft and cozy even before I washed it; now, after a couple trips in the washer, it is one of our favorite, soft blankets for when the temperature dips down at night or when an April shower passes through. The Marquisette Swaddling Blanket® is a very lightweight open weave cotton blanket – for warmer environmental temperatures. We had a couple very warm days right after Charlie was born, and this swaddler came in handy, allowing us to keep him wrapped up tight but not to the point where he was uncomfortably warm. The adorable print of swaddled babies and peace signs was an added bonus with the Marquisette.
SwaddleDesigns is committed to education parents about the importance of maintaining a reasonable temperature for swaddled babies. Recent research has indicated that both overheating AND over-chilling are risk factors for SIDS. Additionally, when babies are too cold, they must redirect the energy they’d use to grow and thrive to the process of staying warm. SwaddleDesigns has seen the importance of remaining informed about how extreme temperatures can affect babies. As a result, the company has created The SwaddleDesigns Goldilocks Guide™ to help new parents remember the importance of keeping baby comfortably warm. Their website provides accurate and up-to-date information about SIDS, so parents can make informed choices. SwaddleDesigns Safe Sleep Program includes recommendations from the AAP and the NIH as the company strives to increase awareness of Safe Sleep practices and help parents reduce risk of SIDS. The How to Swaddle page give step-by-step directions on how to properly swaddle a baby and the blankets also have tags with picture directions. Very helpful!
To Buy or Not to Buy
To Buy…The Swaddle Duo provides two high-quality, large blankets that serve so many purposes beyond swaddling of a newborn. The patterns are cute, but still modern, and the fabric quality is superior to most other receiving blankets. The packaging is very nice and this item would make a great gift for a mommy-to-be whose life will be changed once she learns the art of the swaddle.
Or Not to Buy…You can definitely find receiving blankets that are less expensive than these, but they aren’t as large , nor are they made of fabric as nice as what the SwaddleDuo offers.
