I’m excited for our newest weekly feature at The Shopping Mama. Every Sunday, we’ll focus on one of our favorite books for kids. Think of it as a peak into our story time and find out about what book our kids are saying, “Mama, read THIS one!”

I’ll be the first to admit there are some books I cringe at the thought of reading again (and again). I definitely have my favorite and not so favorite books in our collection, and without a doubt One by Kathryn Otoshi is a book I will never tire of reading. The book is deceptively simple, but the message is important and told in a manner that’s easy for preschoolers to understand.
All the “characters” in the book are colors and tells the story of Blue who is picked on by Red. Red chants “Red is HOT. Blue is NOT.”Like Blue, the other colors are intimidated and frightened of Red so even though they like Blue they don’t stand up for him. Until 1 comes along. 1 looks different from the round color characters in the book and it is the 1st to stand up to Red. It explains to Blue, “If someone is mean and picks on me, I, for One, stand up and say, No.” The other colors follow 1′s lead and as they do they transform from colors into numbers. Finally, Blue turns into a number, too, and Red rolls away realizing he no longer has the power to scare the others. Blue extends an invitation for Red to join them and be counted so there’s a happy ending to this tale of bullying.
The use of ambiguous and universal color and number characters in One makes it easy to young kids to understand the message. And it’s an important one. The book isn’t preachy but it is a great way to introduce the subject of bullying to my 4 year old. Off course another lovely side effect is that the book reinforces colors and numbers with my two year old.
Shop! One is available in The Shopping Mama’s Amazon Book Store right now for under $10 and is eligible for Free Shipping with Amazon Mom.

March 27, 2011Kate, I absolutely LOVE the idea of this book. Thank you so much for sharing it.
You know, in the back of my mind for months I thought this would make a great weekly post (but did I do it? No because sometimes I am dumb) and so I love the idea and look forward to reading this each week! Might even be fun to make it a weekly link up if you think there would be enough interest.
Oh, I love the idea of making it a weekly link up – it’s so fun to learn about new kids books. And, really, a child can never have too many books so I don’t feel guilty about shopping for them!

Awesome, Mary! So glad you’ll join in tomorrow. I have no idea if / how many others will join in, but I’ll include a linky and code for the button in the post that will go live Sunday morning at 7.
