Make a Mobile from Your Photographs

by Shannon on February 23rd, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Children's Decor, Crafts with Kids

Each night as I tuck my daughter into bed, I tell her to count the good things in her life.  I then start the list for her as I back slowly out of the room and always include different things, but the following is a sample:

  1. Daddy
  2. cupcakes
  3. dresses
  4. friends
  5. markers

So as we began the “28 Days of Design” featuring kids’ rooms on The Shopping Mama, I knew I wanted our monthly circle cutter craft to result in a project for my kids’ rooms.  I also knew that I wanted it to help them with counting the best things in life – family and friends.

Enter inspiration from, of all places, Sex and the City.  I remembered the mobile Miranda made for Brady so that he could see her when she had to be away at work.  Voila!  I found a ten-photo mobile at Target.com (also available on Amazon for under $10) and got to work.

The hanging photo clip mobiles.  I ordered two to do one for each child’s room.

For this Project you Need

  1. photo/clip mobile
  2. photos
  3. colored/patterned paper
  4. paper cutter
  5. circle cutter
  6. double-sided tape

How To Make a Photo Mobile

I started by selecting and printing photos. This was probably the longest and hardest part of the project.  Going through photos always makes me emotional and I stop to ponder, long for days gone by and smile.  Because I was going to cut the photos into circles, I had to be careful to make sure there was plenty of background to cut away.  I printed 4X6 photos and cut 3.5 inch circles from each one.  For a border, I cut paper that coordinates with their rooms in 4 inch circles.

Cutting the photos into circles using a small circle cutter.  Notice how the photo had plenty of background to trim away?

After cutting photos into 3.5-inch circles and room-coordinating paper into 4 inch circles, I adhered them together with double-sided tape.

Because I wanted preschool girl and toddler boy to be able to view the photos while lying down, I needed to adhere a tab to the back.  The tab can then be inserted into the clip and will allow the photo to hang horizontally.

To make the tab, I simply cut 3-inch strips of paper and folded them in half.  Then I fanned out the two ends and attached them to the back of the photo circle using double-sided tape.

To make the tabs, cut strips of paper with a paper cutter or scissors.

Fold the paper in half.

Fold out the ends of the paper so they will lie flat when attached.

Attach to the back of the photo with double-sided tape.

Preschool girl’s completed mobile.

I had so much fun making this project and love the mobiles hanging in toddler boy and preschool girl’s rooms.  His hangs above his changing table (did you read Malia’s post about crib safety?) and hers is above her bed, now in a sea of hanging butterflies and flowers (but more about that in another post).

Playful Kids Bedding & Room Décor: CompanyKids Review + Giveaway

by Kate on February 22nd, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Children's Decor, Giveaways, Reviews

When looking for new decor for my son’s new big boy room, I instantly thought of Company Kids.  I was on a quest for anything “truck” themed, and knew that I might find just what I was looking for at CompanyKids.  I was right! There were so many fun options, but I found a few that were just right for my little guys room.

About CompanyKids

In the 1800s, our European ancestors settled along the scenic bluffs of western Wisconsin, on the banks of the Mississippi River. From their Scandinavian homeland they brought traditional skills and values passed down from generation to generation. To endure the often brutal Wisconsin winters, they naturally began handcrafting the warm down comforters and featherbeds they knew so well in the “old country.” This strong sense of tradition and craftsmanship was the foundation for what would become The Company Store.
In 1911, we opened our doors as The La Crosse Garment Company and, in the spirit of our ancestors, took pride in the products we made. For six generations we’ve been committed to making and bringing you the very best products. Guaranteed! To this day, we craft natural cotton and large-cluster European down into the ultimate sleeping pleasure – right here in La Crosse, Wisconsin. This gives us total quality control. And, we still believe in putting quality, value and the customer first.

Our Experience

I have to admit that I have never actually made a purchase from The Company Store or CompanyKids. I get their catalog and always love what I see, I just somehow have never purchased from there. Well, after these samples arrived, I can tell you that will change.  I was impressed with to quality of the products as well as how simply adorable they are and I’ll definitely purchase other products in the future.

As I mentioned above, I decided to redo my sons nursery in a truck theme. I am still in the process of the big transformation, but as soon as the truck storage bins and truck hooks arrived, I was excited to get them assembled and in his room.  The Big Rig Truck Hooks are a fun and functional addition. I was taking down a shelf with peg hooks in the room.  My little guy was very accustomed to hanging his towel up after his bath, so I knew I needed to have hooks somewhere in his room as to not upset his little routine. I was so happy when the hooks arrived. They are so cute, and make the perfect replacement for his old pegs.

The hooks were rather easy to install, however they didn’t come with any hardware to attach them to the wall. It did take us a few trips to the hardware store to find the right size screws to fit.  This was slightly frustrating, but not a big deal at all.  My husband was able to put them up in a few minutes. (Now, me plus a power drill equals trouble, so I didn’t even attempt it but if you are handy- go for it!)

The Construction Storage Bins also came ready to be assembled. These I actually did do by myself! I was able to use a simple screwdriver and had them assembled in about 30 minutes. I love the way the truck is raised, it adds interesting dimension and texture to the bin, not to mention how the truck design is also on the side of the bin, I think that is just adorable.  I plan on using these in his room in many different ways as the years go by.  For now, one contains all of his stuffed friends, and the other has books next to his rocker for bedtime, or anytime, reading.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… If you are in the market for truck decor, look no further! The designs are unique, add so much fun to a space and are very high quality.  I am so happy we have them for my little guy’s room!

Or Not to Buy… If you aren’t looking for truck decor, then these probably aren’t for you.  However, I am sure you think they are cute, and want to check out what other adorable designs Company Kids has to offer!

Other Collections

Here’s a quick glimpse at some of the other, non-truck, themes you’ll find at CompanyKids.

Ballerinas, Rock n Roll, Pinwheels and Dinosaurs.

Shop! Take a look around Company Kids, and see what fun decor , bedding, and storage solutions they have.  The set of 3 Big Rig Truck Wall Hooks are ($29 for the set).  The Construction Bins are ($69) each.  If you aren’t in the market for the kids, maybe take a look at the parent company of Company Kids, The Company Store for some amazing bedding and decor for the rest of the house and family.

Win! A $100 Gift Card for CompanyKids!

How to Enter: Leave a comment telling us how you would spend the gift card at CompanyKids.

Bonus Entries – valid only after completing the first required entry. Please leave a separate comment for each you do.

Giveaway ends March 9. Open to US residents only.

Thanks to The Company Store for providing products for review and the giveaway prize.  As always, opinions are my own and are not influenced by the receipt of any products.

Jockey Sport Activewear Review + Giveaway

by Kate on February 22nd, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  For Mama, Giveaways, Reviews

The day my Jockey Sport workout gear arrived, I was PUMPED. I literally couldn’t wait to trade my denim for the cotton/nylon/spandex blend pants and hit the gym. No matter your fitness level – whether you stroll, stretch or spin – you, too, will find something from Jockey Sport that will make you excited to get dressed and get moving.

About Jockey Sport Activewear

The Jockey Sport boutique consists of three different fit Pants available in Crop or Regular Length, each suited for different kinds of activity. The collection also includes three Sports Tops and a Jacket.

  • Relaxed: loose fit for maximum comfort
  • Modern: medium impact – active and comfortable fit with sleek accents
  • Performance: form fitting for peak performance and muscle support

Get Active with Jockey

Like I mentioned, I was so excited to go to the gym and exercise when the Jockey Sport gear arrived. I honestly don’t ever remember being so excited to work out (because, honestly, I usually do it because I should not because I want to). That first night I went to yoga and opted for the Modern Pants because they are best suited for medium impact exercise. I even wore the coordinating Seamless Tank Top.I can’t tell you what a difference wearing nice, totally appropriate workout clothes did for my yoga class that first night. I felt like I belonged in my yoga class. I felt like I practiced yoga better. It was such a great feeling – and it was totally addictive as it truly enhanced my experience. Understandably, I’ll never go back to working out in ill-fitting yoga pants and worn out t-shirts. I’m totally hooked on my Jockey Sport gear.

One of my favorite things about the Jockey Sport collection is that there’s something for everyone. Yes, there’s the I-really-work-out-and-am-super-fit looking Performance Crop Legging, but there’s also the I’ll-stroll-on-the-treadmill-and-then-run-to-the-grocery-store Relaxed Pant. I totally admit, the Performance Crop Legging was a little intimidating and I was self-conscious to wear them out of the house and to the gym. But, I did (to a 50/50 group cardio class) and I am glad I did. I really felt like I had more freedom and movement in them compared to the ratty old pants I used to wear. And, with pockets and a wide fit, the Relaxed Pant are great for running errands, dropping my kids at school and just day-to-day wear. Of course, the comfortable, stretchy material is just as perfect for a light workout.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… For someone like me, who works out, but isn’t hardcore, it can be hard to invest money in workout clothes. But, I have to say, it’s worth it. Having awesome gear motivates and makes me feel good about working out. The Jockey Sport clothes are great quality, very comfortable, stretchy and supportive.

Or Not to Buy… Ordering workout clothes online presents a unique challenge as good fit is obviously important. I ordered small and next time I would definitely order up. The Performance Crop Legging fits like it should, but I’d prefer more room in the other fits.

Shop! The new Jockey Sport collection is available for purchase directly from Jockey. The Pants are $60, Crop Pants are $55, Sports Tops are $30 and $32 and the matching Zip Front Jacket is $60. Pants and Jacket are in basic black and the tops are available in bright colors.

Win! Three (3) Winners Will Receive Their Choice of Pants from the Jockey Sport Collection!

Prize details: All prizes will be in the form of a Jockey.com coupon code and each winner will be able to pick any of the 6 pants for your prize. Coupon code is valid only on Jockey sport pants and free shipping and will expire December 31, 2011.

How to Enter: Leave a comment with what pants you’d like if you win – you can see them all in the Jockey Sport Boutique.

Bonus Entries – valid only after completing the first required entry. Please leave a separate comment for each you do.

Giveaway ends March 9. Open to US mailing addresses only.

Stars & Elephants Nursery

by Kate on February 21st, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Children's Decor, Nurseries, Bedrooms & Playrooms

This nursery is shared as part of the Real Reader Rooms series sponsored by
The Land of Nod.

This nursery combines two things you might not expect and the result is pure harmony. Christa shared her son Nolan’s stars and elephants nursery.

Christa: I couldn’t decide between stars and elephants and because I knew this would be our last baby I decided to do a mix of both!

Christa: Nolan’s name on the wall and large red star both are from Hobby Lobby. I painted the letters blue with spray paint. I also made the curtains from fabric at Hobby Lobby, simple, straight line sewing!

Christa: You’ll notice a needlepoint picture framed above my changing table. My mom actually made that for a friend in the 70′s. That friend gave it back to me when I had my first baby. To update it and make it fit in my nursery, I simply reframed it and added the blue mat.

Christa: To create the star border around the room, I measured and taped a section and painted it white. After that dried I took an inexpensive ($1.50) star stencil from and painted the blue stars in equal distance from each other.

Thank you, Christa, for sharing your son’s peaceful nursery. Is your little man as serene as his room?
