Make Snowmen Indoors! Great Paper Craft for Kids

by Shannon on January 20th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Crafts with Kids, Life

My daughter has never seen snow… and she is scheming to change that.  Despite the fact that we live in Florida, she longs to play in the snow and make a snowman.  A few days ago, she suggested we drive to “where’er” there is snow and bring it back “’cause itz cold here!”  So for my January circle cutter craft, I wanted to surprise her and let her see snowmen and snowwomen when she looks out the window.

Materials

I started with the usual paper, circle cutter, cutting mat, glue stick, googly eyes and some buttons from my “big bag o’ buttons.”

Let’s Craft

The project, like most in this series, begins with cutting circles in various sizes, graduating by an inch for each portion of the body.  I found the coolest snowflake paper and lined a few circles by cutting it 1/2″ smaller in diameter.  I also cheated and used two “prepared” snowmen from a bag of shapes I found in the dollar bin at Target.

I then laid out all my snowman parts and made sure I had enough to fill the window.

Then I began an assembly line to glue together the snow people and apply the finishing touches.  I glued the circles together to form the body, googly eyes and buttons.  I cut noses, arms and hats freehand from orange, brown and black paper, respectively.

Finally, hang your snow people in the window.  I would love to fill all the windows of my sunroom with these little people.  Alas, I need some sleep.

This is a great craft to do with your children if you precut circles and let them get creative with the assembly.  I did it without assistance because I wanted to surprise my daughter.  I can’t wait to see her face in the morning!

Make Healthy (& Tasty) Baby Food with New Beaba Babycook Accessories

by Kate on January 19th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  New Year New Mama, Shopping

Of all the decisions I’ve made in parenting my kids, one of the things I’m most proud of is making homemade baby food for both of my kids. It was such a sense of accomplishment to know *I* made everything they were eating when they were babies. With each child, I quickly found a routine that made making baby food at home possible, but when the Beaba Babycook Baby Food Maker entered my kitchen in 2009, it was a real game changer – for the better. This one machine replaced my spread of multiple pots and strainers and such.

What is the Beaba Babycook?

Introduced to the North American market in the fall of 2008, the patented Beaba Babycook is the original all-in-one baby food maker.  With a press of a button, the Babycook steam cooks vegetables, fruits and meats and then purees or blends foods to the desired consistency; all while preserving their vitamins and flavors.

New Babycook Accessories

Beaba recently introduced some new Babycook accessories to the US market. They are sold separately and enhance the cooking power of the original baby food maker.

Beaba Rice Cooker ($15). The Rice Cooker prepares rice, pasta and other grains in about 15 minutes. Just use this in place of the regular cooking basket.

Beaba Seasoning Ball ($7). Baby food doesn’t have to taste like, well, nothing. In fact, one of the best things about making your own food is that you can add herbs and spices and introduce your child to flavors the rest of your family eats. You can use the Seasoning Ball to make food to eat or add flavor to food you’re thawing in the Babycook.

Eat Healthier in the New Year

Are you planning to eat healthier in 2011?  (Or planning to try?) Don’t forget the same fresh vegetables, fruits and lean proteins you’ll be eating make a great meal for your infant too, and with the Beaba Babycook, the little one’s meal can be ready in minutes. Your child can’t tell you to put “eating healthy” on their to do list – you have to do it for them. And, making your own baby food ensures you know what is going in baby’s mouth. And, unless you’re pureeing Mike & Ikes, it’s going to be extremely healthy.

Shop! The Beaba Babycook Baby Food Maker is $150 and is available in two colors – sorbet (pictured above) and Latte/Mint. For more information and to see the complete line of Beaba products offered in the States, visit www.beabausa.com.

Mom Style Q & A: Melissa from bStylish

by Kate on January 19th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Fashion & Beauty, New Year New Mama

As part of the New Year, New Mama series, we are featuring some very stylish moms. We’re hoping the quick Q & A will give us all a little style inspiration to kick it up a notch in the new year.

***

I’m so excited to share Melissa’s take on mom style. She is a lovely blogger and a lovely person. I had the pleasure of shopping for clothes with her last summer at a very cool BlogHer event. In fact, I believe she was the one who talked me into a gorgeous dress I really didn’t need but totally love.

The Shopping Mama: How do you define your style?

Melissa: I would say I have a classic, casual style with a girly twist. Since its winter, I’m living in jeans and sweaters. You can usually find me wearing jeggings tucked into boots with a sweater coat or trouser jeans with a ruffled cardigan. I adore ruffles, embellished tshirts, statement necklaces, boots, scarves, anything from Anthropologie or Loft, and pink toenails.

TSM: What’s your favorite thing in your closet?

Melissa: I feel like my favorite outfit is constantly changing, but if I had to choose just one thing, it would probably my favorite pair of jeans, a pair of 7 For All Mankinds that I found on super clearance last fall. I wear them probably twice a week! The only thing I wear more than that are my Uggs!

TSM: Describe your image of a stylish mom.

Melissa: There’s so much more to being stylish than just the clothes you are wearing: it’s about looking put together.  What she’s wearing is secondary: stylish moms can be sporty, preppy, girly, goth, classic or whatever! Its not about what your personal style preference is – its about taking that extra ten minutes in the morning to put on a touch of makeup, spritzing on a little perfume and have 3 or 4 killer outfits in your closet that you know work!

TSM: We’re often seduced by cheap finds (anything at Target comes to mind), when is it okay to go cheap and when is it better to buy one, more expensive piece?

Melissa: Its absolutely okay to go cheap for things that need replacing often (like a white tshirt) or to try out a new trend that you’re not sure you like or that probably won’t stick.  I love Target – I pick up t-shirts and tank tops for layering, they have great leggings and tights, and pick up cute trendy things like a fun sundress or a ruffley blouse.

Ironically, we tend to splurge on special occasions for things we’ll only wear once or twice, but go cheap for things that we wear every day, like jeans! Ignore those lists of “what every women needs in her closet.” Spend your money on what YOU wear most. Maybe that’s jeans, maybe its work clothes, maybe its yoga gear — buying higher quality of what gets the most wear in your wardrobe will make the biggest difference in your clothing!

TSM: What is one must have piece of clothing or accessory for this season and / or spring?

Melissa: This spring’s hottest color is coral/orange.  Pick up a blouse or t-shirt to layer under a sweater for now, and pair it with white pants or a shirt when spring comes. (Samples below from Loft) Wedges are also going to be huge again this spring — and there are tons still on clearance from last summer, so pick some up now and save them for spring!

Snack Bowl 2011! Are You in the Pro Party Hall of Fame?

by Kate on January 18th, 2011  |  5 Comments  |  Life

Chances are no one in MY family will never be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but I like to think I have a shot getting into the Pro Football Party Hall of Fame. Admittedly, this football season has not been my best in terms of entertaining – and frankly, the football parties have suffered since the kids arrived. BUT, there is nothing better than spending an afternoon watching football with friends and family enjoying a spread of delicious food and snacks.

So, if you’re more a pro in the party department than the football field, the Snack Bowl 2011 is for you! Entering is super easy. Just submit a photo and a short description of why you are a Party Hall of Famer. Up for grabs? An awesome prize package for One Grand Prize Winner, including:

  • Trip for 2 to the Hall of Fame® in Canton, OH.
  • Tickets to the Friday night “Enshrinee Dinner”
  • A “VIP Moment” during which a PFHOF Member will present a trophy to a winner determined by Diamond of the Promotion during one of the enshrinement events set forth above
  • Plaque hung in the Hall of Fame snack bar
  • $5,000 cash USD

The entry process is super simple – I might be trying to win for my grandmother who would be in heaven getting the VIP treatment at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The 10 entries with the most votes will be evaluated and a winner will be selected based on expressiveness, persuasiveness and originality.

Half the fun is voting for other people because you can play the Instant Win Game for your chance to win 1 of 1000 Hall of Fame shop gift certificates.

Check out the Diamond Snack Bowl 2011! Contest ends February 7. See the Official Rules for more information.
