L’Oréal Kids Toy Story 3 Extra Gentle 2-in-1 Shampoo Review

by Kate on June 27th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Reviews, Toddler

The popularity of Toy Story is currently at it’s all-time high in our house due to the recent release of Toy Story 3. At bath time, my daughters were practically giddy at the sight of Woody on the label when they saw the new L’Oréal Kids Toy Story 3 Extra Gentle 2-in-1 Shampoo. We received Woody’s Giddy Up N’ Go Mango for review, which is an orange mango smoothie formula.
Scents include:

  • Buzz’s Intergalactic Berry
  • Woody’s Giddy Up N’Go Mango
  • Jessie’s Yippin’ Yodelberry
  • Rex’s Rip Roarin’ Rapple

Like all L’Oréal Kids Extra Gentle 2-in-1 Shampoos, the Toy Story 3 formulas promise no tears and no knots, and helps protect hair from damage, split ends and dryness, leaving it silky and shiny. The bottles are also soft and easy to hold, allowing tiny hands to have fun learning to lather up.

Our Experience

With Woody on the label, my daughters were eager to open the bottle to find out how it smelled. The mango scent was very fruity, but not at all overpowering as you might expect with a mango-scented product. The shampoo created a rich lather and was easy to rinse out. It seems inevitable that my kids get shampoo in their eyes at bath time, and the L’Oréal Kids formula did not cause any discomfort for them when I was rinsing it out of their hair.

After her hair dried, there was a noticeable difference in the softness of my older daughter’s hair. The brush went through more easily, and her hair had a softer texture. I usually use baby shampoo on her hair, and will generally use leave-in conditioner after the bath. With the L’Oréal Kids 2-1 formula, there was no need for additional conditioner, and the results were better than our shampoo + leave-in routine.

Exclusive Toy Story 3 Sweepstakes!

L’Oréal Kids will be featuring an exclusive Toy Story 3 sweepstakes for a chance to win exciting prizes including a family trip to New York City for a toy shopping spree, and a fun new “collect all four” de-coder game revealing fun coded facts and trivia on the website (visit www.lorealkids.com for sweepstakes registration, de-coder game and more fun information for kids to discover).

To Buy or Not To Buy

To Buy…Until now, I had not considered L’Oréal Kids shampoos, but will most definitely buy it in the future. For only $2.99 it is completely affordable, and actually costs less than our usual shampoo + leave-in conditioner routine. We loved the scent and will most likely buy another Toy Story 2-1 as soon as this bottle runs out (though I’m guessing my almost 4-year old will choose Jessie’s Yippin’ Yodelberry).

Or Not to buy… Unless you are not Toy Story fans (do those people exist?) or you prefer an unscented shampoo, there is no reason not to try the L’Oréal Kids Toy Story 3 Extra Gentle 2-in-1 Shampoo. The gentle formula, fresh scent, conditioning power, and affordable price make it an obvious choice in our house.

Shop! L’Oréal Kids Toy Story 3 Extra Gentle 2-in-1 Shampoos join the existing line of L’Oréal Kids grooming products at www.lorealkids.com and chain drug, food and mass-market retailers nationwide for a suggested retail price of $2.99.

Disclosure: Thanks to L’Oréal for providing a sample product for the purpose of this review. Opinions here are my own and uninfluenced by receipt of product.

How Do I Stop My Toddler From Biting

by Kate on June 26th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Life, Parenting

I first wrote about my daughter’s biting problem a couple months ago. Three months ago, in fact. And, clearly my approach is NOT working because she continues to bite more than ever. She has expanded from biting only her brother to biting friends and her big brother’s friends. And she’s tried many a time to bite me!

It’s crunch time, folks. She starts Mom’s Day Out on Monday and, although, I haven’t asked for the discipline details, I’m sure the program does not look kindly on children biting one another.

My daughter is 19 months old. She’s incredibly independent, sociable and can be the most loving child you’ve ever seen. But, she has a temper like you read about and gets very mad when she doesn’t get her way. And that’s when she bites.

Oh, and just because it’s funny, I should mention she only has 8 teeth – 4 in front on top, 2 in front on bottom and 2 molars on one side. Ran-dom!

Advice to Stop Biting Behavior

I’ve looked around on the web and even wiped the dust off some of my actual books to try to read about what I can do to make her stop biting.

About.com has a collection of articles about Stopping Toddler Biting Behaviors, and I found this advice from the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford to be particularly helpful. It explains that toddlers usually bite for one of four reasons: experimenting, frustration, feeling powerless or stressed. I think my daughter probably falls into the frustrated and / or powerless category. Here’s advice from that article on appropriate way to stop biting:

While every child is different, the following are some recommendations that may be used to help with the child who bites:

  • Be firm. Tell your child that you will not accept biting and why. Tell him/her biting hurts others.
  • Offer another behavior the child may use instead of biting. If the child bites because he/she is angry, have the child come to you and tell you this instead. A child who is younger than 18 months may need a toy that is allowed to be chewed on.
  • If you catch your child biting, use a firm “no” to stop the behavior, or try to stop the child before the biting actually occurs.
  • Use time-out if your child bites, or take away a favorite toy or activity.
  • Do not bite your child for biting someone else. This teaches your child that biting is still acceptable. Do not bite your child in a playful manner, as this might teach him/her to bite others.
  • Give praise when your child does not bite.

The other information I found helpful was from What to Expect the Toddler Years. It described the frustrated biter: “Frustrated by her inability to manipulate her environment or to make her needs and desires clear, and aware that her words won’t have the ‘bite’ she’d like them to have, she simply uses her teeth.”

“Probably because biting seems so primal, so animal-like, parents are often more horrified when their toddlers bite than when they hit. Yet the biter is no more vicious than the hitter. In fact, a majority of toddlers engage in some biting sometime between their first and third birthdays. For more, it never becomes chronic; a few experimental chomps seem to satisfy the urge. But for some, the behavior persists, and continues to cause problems.”

(That would be my kid!)

Suggested precautions to prevent biting from What to Expect the Toddler Years:

  1. Provide a nibble to prevent biting. Sometimes a child bites just because she’s hungry.
  2. Never bite back. As with hitting back, biting back is confusing to the toddler.
  3. Nip biting in the bud. Don’t overreact, yell or embark on a lengthy lecture; simply take your toddler aside and explain calmly but firmly, “Please don’t bite. Biting hurts. Your hurt Anna when you bit her.”
  4. Avoid a double standard. Avoid confusion by making all biting (like playful nibbles) off limits at all times.
  5. Take biting seriously.

Plan of Action

When my daughter bites, I remove her from the situation tell her “No bite. Biting hurts. You hurt {insert victim’s name here}. No bite.” If we’re at home, I put her in her crib for a “time out.” Clearly it hasn’t worked.

I think I can improve by helping put words to the frustration and anger she’s feeling and to validate that. It sounds kind of hooky, but if she can’t say it, she bites, so I need to say it for her. I also need to watch her like a hawk and warn her Mom’s Day Out teachers about the issue so they know to watch her and prevent unnecessary frustration before a bite happens. Because she is so independent and often plays by herself, I think this will be the hardest part for me – I really need to stay close so I’m able to spot issues before they arise.

I know I’ve asked before, but do you have any other advice or words of wisdom to help teach a toddler not to bite?

Little Fish Big Pond Dress Kit Giveaway

by Kate on June 24th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways

Whether you already know how to sew or are interested in trying your hand at it, Little Fish Big Pond offers children’s dress kits which include everything you need to make a sweet dress for your little girl. Included in each kit: precut fabric pieces, ribbon (if needed), easy-to-follow instructions, and the satisfaction of knowing you made it. I must say that I have never sewn a thing in my life, but I have purchased a bunch of these kits over the last few months – shipped straight to my mom (aka my little girls’ seamstress), who adores the Little Fish Big Pond kits.

Linda, owner of Little Fish Big Pond, says the following about finding inspiration…

I have the remarkable good fortune to live high in the mountains of Northern California, in the small resort town of Bear Valley. With skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling the only forms of transportation for at least six months of the year, this lovely town is not for everyone (Think of a two year old child in a backpack and towing a sled full of groceries). I find it magical. My studio sits on the edge of a beautiful mountain meadow where finding inspiration to create is never a struggle.

Inside scoop! New to the shop are $10 kits, which include everything you need to make a top or dress (also discounted right now!) If you fall in love with one of Little Fish Big Pond’s dresses and don’t want to make it yourself, sewing services are available for a $20 fee. Also, new lines are due out any day now, so be sure to keep an eye out.

Shop! An end of the school year clearance sale is on right now at Little Fish Big Pond, ALL kits have been marked down!

Infantino Twist and Fold Activity Gym Review

by Kate on June 23rd, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Baby, Reviews, Toys

The third product of the month for kickoff of the  Infantino Test Drive Mom program is the Twist and Fold Activity Gym.   I really enjoyed reviewing this product, as it brings a smile, endless coos and belly laughs from my daughter every day!

About the Twist and Fold Activity Gym

Unique twist and fold action makes using and storing gym easy! Pops up in one simple motion and folds down for easy storage or travel. Comes with 4 linkable toys and bolster pillow for tummy time. Encourages reaching and engages baby’s senses.

Our Experience

One of the main features of this activity gym that sets it apart from others you may have seen is the unique way that it sets up and folds away so nicely.  Again, Infantino has provided us with a great travel item for vacation! This will be a cinch to fold up and pack to take on the road.    It also is just so darn cute to look at.  Baby girl loves looking at herself in the mirror, she seems to find herself hilarious, and laughs constantly.  She really enjoys the toys that hang down, and they are at a perfect height for her to grab and investigate.  I personally like that it comes with a little bolster pillow that can be placed anywhere on the mat.  This is a good thing for her tummy time that I previously mentioned is not her favorite. She tolerates being on her tummy much longer with the bolster than without.

I decided to set this gym up in my kids’ playroom. It has proven to be a fun toy for both kids. My toddler likes to use his little imagination and puts his cars under the mat in the “garage”.  So it seems as if it is fun for all ages!

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… I would certainly purchase this activity gym, as it is a great gym, easy to store, and so wonderfully entertaining.  Not to mention a great price.

Or Not to Buy… I would like to see maybe one toy with some lights to captivate baby.  Though she is entertained enough with her own smile in the mirror. :)

Shop! The suggested retail price of the Twist and Fold Activity Gym is $39.99, and it can be purchased at Amazon.

“I am a participant in a Mom Central campaign for Infantino and have received various Infantino products to as part of my participation.”

Smitten NYC Review + Giveaway

by Kate on June 23rd, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  For Mama, Giveaways, Reviews

Every time I dress for a night out or pack for a trip, I come to the distinct realization that I have no fun clothes. My wardrobe is depressing and needs a good pick me up every now and then. The most fun and stylish recent addition to my closet is the awesome Striped Ruffle Tank with Beads from Smitten NYC.

About Smitten NYC

Retro details mix with modern cuts in our so easy to fall in love with line, Smitten NYC. … Smitten was founded in 2008. The design team wanted a chic, but wearable line that made women weak in the knees. Since its inception, the line has found its way into over 400 specialty stores, can be found in major department stores, has been stoked in some of the top online retail stores and now, we have our own e-commerce store to make shopping our designs even easier for our stylish clientele!

Ruffle Tank with Beads

I had such fun browsing the tops and dresses at Smitten NYC because the style is bold and on trend without being intimidating. Because, let’s be honest, even if you have “the shirt”, if you feel uncomfortable in it, you won’t wear it. And, I’ve made that mistake before. But, I didn’t find that to be an issue at Smitten – everything is very wearable. So after some serious internal struggled, I picked the Ruffle Tank with Beads in grey/mocha stripes and I am so glad I did. I love it.

The tank is made from 100% tencel – a fabric I didn’t know a thing about, but turns out it is a biodegradable fabric made from wood pulp cellulose. Who knew? But, I have to tell you it is extremely soft and silky. It’s very lightweight to the point that I thought I might need to wear something underneath the tank. As you can see from the pictures, an undershirt wasn’t necessary for a date night but you might want to layer with a solid tank when you’re feeling more modest. I wore it with faded denim, but I think it would look awesome with some skinny jeans.

I love the ruffle detail and the beads add a little something-something without being overwhelming. I really love this tank and (outfit spoiler!) it was one of the first things I packed in my suitcase for my trip to the EVO Conference this weekend.

Stylish Summer Dresses

When you check out some of the other tanks and dresses at Smitten NYC, you’ll see why I had such a hard time picking one favorite item. Here are several dresses that are currently on my wish list.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… I really, really like the Ruffle Tank with Beads. It’s so easy and comfortable to wear and it looks great (at least I think it does). All the styles at Smitten are unique and on trend without being outrageous – the clothes are fun and wearable.

Or Not to Buy… The price tag is definitely a downside to the great clothes at Smitten. The tank, for example, is definitely more than I usually spend on a top.

Shop! The Smitten Striped Ruffle Tank with Beads is $98 and available in black or gray/mocha. Be sure to check out the new items, dressy tops and summer dresses.

Win! Your Choice of any Item from Smitten NYC – up to a $100 value!
