Make a Statement with Tail Wags Helmet Covers Review

by Kate on June 6th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Reviews, Reviews, Spring Into Spring

In the past couple months my son has developed a real interest in ridig his bikes and we usually spend an hour or two a day playing outside while he improves his riding skills. After lots of practice, he has mastered his tricycle. But, the process was not easy. He took many a tumble while getting the hang of it and my husband and I made the decision early on he needed to wear a helmet. So we bought one – but three year olds are finicky so getting him to wear it was another story. Until we received a Tail Wags Helmet Cover that took his helmet from a boring mom rule to a fun accessory that he actually wants to wear. Even when he’s not riding his bike.

About Tail Wags

Parents know the importance of children wearing helmets while skiing, snowboarding, skating, tobogganing, biking and equestrian riding. However, they are often faced with the difficult task of getting their kids to actually wear their helmets. Tail Wags provides a fun solution that can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Our helmet covers are made from top quality fabrics and finishings to create a superior product for you to enjoy. They are resistant to colour fading and tearing, and are sturdy enough to be worn under all kinds of conditions. Tail Wags is proud to have developed helmet covers that you can treasure for years to come.

Tail Wags Helmet Covers

Tail Wags helmet covers are available in three different fabrics – lightweight lycra, micro fleece and polar fleece. The fleece helmet covers are available in children’s size (which generally fits kids up around 9 years old) and adult while the lycra helmet covers are one size fits all. Because the covers fit over the helmet with elastic, they git all kinds of safety helmets for your active kids.

Here are some of my favorite designs made of fleece. What girl wouldn’t love the Princess Cover? And how cool are the spider and turtle?

Dinosaur Helmet Cover

We received the Dinosaur Helmet Cover in the new lightweight lycra material. The Helmet Cover is bright and bold and pure awesome. Like most Tail Wags covers, the Dinosaur is 3D with a face, spike and tail. It even has googly eyes. I love how playful and youthful it is.

The cover fits easily and snugly over my son’s bike helmet intended for 3 to 5 year olds. The helmet is well made with elastic around the bottom to keep it secure on the helmet. When it’s on the helmet, it’s there to stay until you want to take it off.

Even my daughter who doesn’t ride a bike or need a helmet likes to wear the Tail Wags!

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… I simply love Tail Wags Helmet Covers. They are obviously adorable, and the quality is great. Not to mention the incentive factor they provide for your little one to actually wear a helmet. The cover transforms a boring helmet into a fun accessory kids actually want to wear.

Or Not to Buy… We actually had trouble finding a plain bike helmet for my son – they all had characters on them – so you may not find this necessary. But keep them in mind as your child’s interests change or as a way to offer an alternative to the helmet you do have.

Shop! The Dinosaur Helmet Cover and the other lycra covers (like those pictured above) are $45. Most fleece helmet covers are $40. You can purchase Tail Wags and search for US and Canadian retailers online. **Become a fan of Tail Wags on Facebook and receive an exclusive 10% discount!**

Laken & Lila – Review + Giveaway

by Kate on June 6th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Clothes, Giveaways, Reviews

I love to dress my girls in well made, unique, classic clothing and Laken & Lila offers just that. My almost-4 year old was so excited when she opened the Nautical Stripe Beach Skirt package that she put it on immediately. The skirt arrived in time for memorial day, and will be perfect for the 4th of July as well as lazy days by the beach over her swimsuit or hanging out on the boardwalk.

About Laken & Lila

Heather, owner of Laken & Lila, started sewing at a very young age. She has always had a passion for making skirts, dresses, and tops, so it was only natural that she open her very own shop while staying home with her 3 year-old boy, Laken. Heather creates from her studio which is just steps away from Chautauqua Lake in Western New York – so jealous!

Skirt Review

All Laken & Lila skirts feature an elastic waist, which allows for the skirt to grow with your little one.  My daughter is fairly average in size for her age, and the 4/5T we received fits her very well for this summer, but I am certain she will be able to wear it next summer, too. Worth mentioning is the adorable Laken & Lila boutique label that is sewn just above the lower right hem of the skirt. It gives the skirt that “finished” look, and makes people look closer to ask “where did you get that CUTE skirt?” (this has already happened twice!) I have washed the skirt several times now and it looks just as high quality as the day we received it. Since my daughter has worn it for special occasions (eg Memorial day, school party), I have quickly ironed it a few times and it turns out beautifully. The skirt definitely doesn’t need to be ironed for everyday wear, though.

Inside Scoop

Heather let TSM readers in on her return customer promotion! With your initial purchase, you will receive a card which lets you know that you will receive 20% off of your next purchase PLUS free shipping. There are a few other promos at Laken & Lila to be aware of:

  • Buy any 2 skirts, get one free
  • Skirt of the month, which is an individual skirt  marked down for one month only (see May’s skirt here)
  • Skirt of the month club, where the lucky recipient receives one season-appropriate skirt in the mail each month (the cost is $156 — works out to only $13/skirt including shipping!)

Complimentary gift wrapping services are also available, so you can send Laken & Lila clothing directly to the lucky recipient!

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… I would label the clothing from Laken & Lila as “gift-worthy.” By that I mean that I would be proud to give anything from this shop as a gift to friends or family, as I am quite impressed with the high quality fabric, craftmanship, and overall look of the finished product. Boutique quality fabric and craftmanship, you can’t go wrong! It’s easy to stock up and save a little dough while doing it with the “buy two skirts get one free” promo at Laken & Lila. Buy three skirts, keep one for your little girl and give the others as gifts…or do what I would do, and just keep all 3!

Or Not to Buy… I am hard-pressed to come up with a reason not to buy the clothing at Laken & Lila. Your initial purchase may be priced a dollar or two more than other handmade clothing, but with the return customer discount of 20% + FREE SHIPPING (not to mention the quality you receive), these buys are a total steal.

Shop! You can purchase Laken & Lila clothing at Heather’s Etsy shop here.

Baby Sling Recall & Safety Advice

by Kate on June 5th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Parenting

Last week, the Consumer Products Safety Commission announced the recall of ring slings by Sprout Stuff. This recall follows a March CPSC Safety Warning about sling carriers for babies. Part of that statement reads:

(CPSC) is advising parents and caregivers to be cautious when using infant slings for babies younger than four months of age. In researching incident reports from the past 20 years, CPSC identified and is investigating at least 14 deaths associated with sling-style infant carriers, including three in 2009. Twelve of the deaths involved babies younger than four months of age.

Baby Sling Suffocation Risk

The warning indicates two suffocation risks associated with baby slings. First, the fabric from the sling can block a baby’s nose and mouth. Because babies lack neck control and muscle strength they cannot move to get air. The warning indicates a baby can suffocate as quickly as in a minute or two! The second risk comes from the position a baby assumes in a sling. When in the curled position, with chin to chest, breathing can be restricted and limited.

The CPSC provided the following image about the correct positioning when carrying a baby in a sling.

Additional Safety Recommendations from the Good Housekeeping Institute

The Good Housekeeping Research Institute, Good Housekeeping’s product testing laboratory with a staff of scientists who are dedicated to consumer advocacy, strongly urges consumers to not use baby slings for infants under 4 months. They emphasize it’s important baby has head control before using a sling. Here are some additional safety recommendations from the Good Housekeeping Institute:

  1. Make sure your child’s face is visible at all times.  It shouldn’t be covered by any fabric.
  2. Be able to see your child’s entire face when he or she is in a sling.
  3. Make certain your child isn’t hunched over so that his or her chin touches the chest.
  4. Make sure your child’s face is not pressed tight against you.
  5. Be vigilant about checking on your child while he or she is in the sling.

I carried my daughter in a sling when she was younger than the now recommended age of 4 months so this warning hits close to home. If you use a sling, please be careful to follow the recommendations and if you know a babywearing mama, make sure she knows the baby sling safety warnings.

Sunglass Warehouse Review + Giveaway

by Kate on June 5th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways, Reviews

No matter where you live, one summer must have for every adult is a pair of sunglasses. While it might be nice to splurge on a pair of fancy designer sunglasses, that is highly impractical if you have young children who like to play with “wear” your stuff. (Or if you’re like my husband who loses a pair of sunglasses every month or two.) The solution? Sunglasses that are low priced but high in fashion and there’s no better place to find them than Sunglass Warehouse.

About Sunglass Warehouse

Founded in 2002, SunglassWarehouse.com is more than just another sunglasses retailer. We are a customer service company passionate about sunglasses. Here at SunglassWarehouse.com, the customer is our top priority. Over the past seven years, we have served the needs of thousands of satisfied customers, providing quality sunglasses at affordable prices.

My Retro Shades

I searched the Retro Sunglasses and found the Striped Sunglasses. Described at 70s shades, I liked the shape of them and opted for the Brown frame (over Black, Yellow and Red). When they arrived, I was pleased that they look exactly like the photo on the website and were just what I expected.

Now, you know I always include personal photos in my reviews, but in this case I’m going to spare you a photo of moi. Because, seriously? My mug wouldn’t do the glasses justice. They definitely look like they cost more than $13.56! The quality is good, especially considering the price tag. They have scratched a bit, but nothing I wouldn’t expect considering the wear and tear my kids thoughtfully put them through.

Huge Variety of Sunglasses

Without a doubt, the best thing about Sunglass Warehouse is the enormous selection. With so many choices, it could easily be overwhelming, but there are plenty of ways to shop and browse different styles that it makes shopping fun. You can browse by Trend or Style or, my favorite, “Compare Styles To” designer brands. So, if you’ve been eying a pair of Coach Sunglasses, but can’t afford the price tag, check out the styles that compare to Dior for a much more reasonable price tag.

Here are a few other fun styles I like: Aviator Style Sunglasses, Giraffe Print Frames and Rimless Style Sunglasses.

If you need help determining which glasses are the best, Sunglass Warehouse has some helpful advice. For example, read about how to choose the best sunglasses for the shape of your face and picking the best sunglasses for your skin tone.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The selection at Sunglass Warehouse is unmatched. If you have a style in mind you will likely find it (or something you like better) – and for a very affordable price. At less than $15, you really can’t beat the price for the style and the quality exceeds some other inexpensive pairs I’ve bought in the past.

Or Not to Buy… My sunglasses are scratched up a bit after several weeks of use, but nothing I wouldn’t expect for the price point.

Shop! Sunglass Warehouse has over a thousand sunglasses for under $20. Save even more during the spring sale – the entire site is discounted 15%. Plus, receive FREE SHIPPING on all orders over $25.

Win! A $20 Gift Certificate to Sunglass Warehouse to get your own Shades!

OrganizHer Products at Target Review

by Kate on June 4th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Reviews

I’m being generous when I say I could use some help in the organization and family management department. Staying on top of everything from when gymnastics ends to when swimming begins and when my husband is in and out of town and doctor’s appointments… there are a lot of dates and times and details. And, my mom brain just doesn’t keep track of it all. (And my kids aren’t even in real school yet!) OrganizHer products are designed specifically for multi-tasking moms like me. The affordable line of more than a dozen products is available at Target stores nationwide.

About OrganizHer

OrganizHer™ offers functional, flexible, fashionable products designed with the modern household in mind. Most women juggle multiple schedules, long to-do lists, budget tracking, and meal planning – not just for one person, but for many. That’s why we developed All Me and All Them sections, customizable formats and fabulous designs. Used alone or in a system, OrganizHer products help you gain control and make it work!

OrganizHer Review

I jumped at the chance to try out some products from the OrganizHer line and selected three products to tackle some of my specific challenges.

Shopping Companion

It’s as if this was created for me… I am “The Shopping Mama”, after all. The Shopping Companion is a small two ring soft-sided binder with “shopping lists”. But, each list is divided into four sections so you can organize your shopping tasks however you like. For the grocery store you can list by section (ie produce, meat), or you can organize by who you’re shopping for (perfect for back to school or holiday shopping), or you can organize by store you need to visit. Obviously, because it’s totally customizable, you can organize however works best for you. There are also tabbed pocket dividers and plastic pockets for loyalty cards and coupons. The thing I like best about the Shopping Companion is that the front and back cover are made of the soft-sided binder material to protect. It’s much better than an old pad of paper that gets destroyed in a hurry in my diaper bag.

Magnetic Calendar Center

This week by week calendar is mostly blank so you can fill in the dates and organize your days by family member. This is great for keeping track of lessons and appointments and to get an overview of the week ahead. I’m definitely not using it to its full potential because, well, my kids aren’t all that busy and don’t do anything without me. I think this is most useful if your kids are going multiple directions and you need to really organize who’s-getting-where-how. I do really like that at the bottom there’s a place for “chow” to help organize your meals. But, if you’re interested in tracking more than 3 additional family members, you’ll need that bottom row for a person and not meals.

Each week is a new piece of paper that you can rip off when no longer relevant, and there is also a small white board section at the bottom for notes. I do wish this had a place to store a pen in addition to storing a white board marker. Pens are a hot commodity around here, for some reason, so I’m always looking for one and it would be great if I could store one on the Calendar Center.

Write ‘n Wipe Meal Center

I was most excited about using this OrganizHer product. I often feel like I”m wandering through the grocery store making up my list as I go along because I haven’t thoroughly planned our meals for the week. My goal is to plan the entire week and shop accordingly and this makes that a lot easier. You can jot down your weekly meal plan (for lunches and dinners) on the white board. (As you can see from the picture below, I need to get better about planning lunches!)

There’s an attached Shopping List so as you plan your meals you can make your grocery shopping list. My main complaint about the product is that the list is not divided by section of the grocery store. I always try to organize my shopping lists by type of food so I’m not wondering around or criss-crossing back and forth through the store. And, I as with the Calendar Center, I wish this had a place to store a pen since the Shopping List is paper.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy…. The OrganizHer products by Mead are very affordable for the quality. The line includes everything from the products featured here to an Address Book, Expandable Folder, Expense Tracker, Desk Calendar and more. I like the organization provided by the Shopping Companion and look forward to continuing to improve meal planning with the Meal Planner.

Or Not to Buy… I think the Meal Planner shopping list should include grocery store sections to help organize the grocery shopping list. I also with the products that include paper had a pen or pencil holder as well as a white board marker holder.

Shop! OrganizHer by Mead products are available exclusively at Target. The Shopping Companion is $7.99, the Magnetic Calendar Center is $15.99 and the Write ‘n Wipe Meal Center is only $7.99. The OrganizHer products are in the paper goods section of my local Target – near the greeting cards and craft supplies.

The Cold Seat {from The Baby's Bundle} Review + Giveaway

by Kate on June 4th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways, Reviews

Summer has officially arrived and it’s here to stay for at least the next couple months. The hot weather means taking special precautions to protect our kids, like sunscreen and extra liquids. Let me introduce you to a new part of our summer weather-appropriate routine: The Cold Seat. The Cold Seat is “The world’s first freezable seat cooler, designed to create a comfortable safe ride for your precious cargo.”

How The Cold Seat Works

1. FREEZE IT: Place in freezer or deep freeze prior to using.
2. USE IT: Place Cold Seat – over booster, convertible, or regular car seat – whenever possible, cover buckles.
3. STORE IT: Remove from seat prior to placing child. To prolong use, store Cold Seat™ in shade or below seat while driving.
4. REFREEZE IT: At the end of your day, remember to roll up Cold Seat™ using Velcro tab.

Our Experience

My first impression of The Cold Seat is that it would be a bulky addition to the car seat. And then I read the directions! You do NOT use The Cold Seat while the child is in the car. Rather, it keeps the car seat – and metal buckles! – cool while you’re child isn’t in the seat so he can return to a pleasant place to sit when the rest of the car is hot. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you those metal buckles can get extremely hot to the touch. I still get nervous placing my daughter in her car seat (when using The Cold Seat on my son’s car seat) because I’m afraid even with my best efforts her bare leg will touch the metal latches. When using The Cold Seat, this isn’t an issue. I can place my kids – bare summer legs and all – in a seat with no fear of burning them.

The Cold Seat is deceivingly big (check it out laid flat next to my 3 year old son) to cover even the largest car seats. But, it also rolls up pretty compactly so you can keep it in the freezer when not in use. It fits easily on both of our Convertible Car Seats. (And, I did test it on an infant car seat as well, but it’s not really necessary because you can bring the infant car seat carrier in the house to keep cool.) When I’m out and about and the kids are in their car seats, I roll up the Cold Seat and put it on the floor to keep it chilled until we get out of the car and I can place it back on a car seat.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… A car can be unbearably hot in the summer and The Cold Seat is an easy to use way to make sure your child is a little more comfortable. I’d love one  in my size so my seat stays cool throughout the day!

Or Not to Buy… The main problem is that The Cold Seat is one more thing you have to remember to take with you when you leave the house. I usually end up making several trips in and out before actually driving out of the drive way so I’m used to this. Also, if you have more than one child in car or booster seats, you need more than one.

Shop! The Cold Seat is available in blue camouflage or pink flower pattern at The Baby’s Bundle and normally costs $49.99. But, as a special to The Shopping Mama readers, The Cold Seat is on sale for $39.99 for two weeks only (until June 18).

The Baby’s Bundle also has a wide selection of custom stroller canopy covers, minky baby blankets, and all things for “the pampered baby and loving mother!” Plus, The Baby’s Bundle is now on Etsy – check it out.

Merry Maids – Mom's Superheroes

by Kate on June 4th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Shopping

No matter how hard I wish for them, we don’t have a team of maids at my beck and call to clean up this house. And, if you randomly stop by my house, you’ll see exactly what I mean. Clutter, clutter everywhere! And unmade beds galore. But, what is most important to me is making sure the house is actually clean. I can deal with the mess, but I won’t do dirty.

I just don’t have enough hours in the day to really do the house justice. I prioritize other things. Playing with the kids or cleaning the kitchen floor? Play time! Blogging or cleaning during nap time? The Shopping Mama wins. And from the moment the kids wake up from nap to bedtime is an exercise in multi-tasking without the chores of cleaning.

What I really need is my own team of personal superheroes to swoop in and sweep away the troubles. Literally. Turns out, there’s a service for that. Merry Maids house cleaning services, to be exact.

Step into a home cleaned to your complete satisfaction. Cross a major chore off your to-do list and let us take care of house cleaning. Then savor the pleasure of knowing your whole home has been cleaned by a professional team you can trust. A team that cleans just the way you want each and every time.

Sound divine, doesn’t it? I’m seriously thinking instead of buying me something I don’t really need for my birthday in a couple months, I should refer my husband to this post. A twice a month appointment with “Merry Maids” would be the gift that keeps on giving.

Have you ever used Merry Maids or a similar house cleaning service? What did you think?

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post on behalf of Merry Maids. Opinions are 100% my own.
