Ralph Lauren Baby: For the Infant Who Has “Everything”

by Kate on December 20th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Baby, Clothes, Reviews

We all have the friends and family that seem to have everything for baby, making it rather difficult to come up with a useful baby gift that will still wow. Luxury clothing line Ralph Lauren Baby features classic, high-quality layette pieces that will certainly satisfy even the most picky of parents.

About Ralph Lauren Baby

Ralph Lauren’s Baby collection includes Layette (newborn – 9 mos) and Infant (9 mos – 24 mos), which offers timeless classic styles that are perfect essentials for any new addition to the family.

Baby Gift Ideas

Winter baby or not, every newborn needs a hat and booties, and these are the perfect “going out” set. Back in the day when I had a social life, I had “going out pants” – the ones reserved for nights on the town. Well, babies don’t hit the bar scene, but they do on occasion (especially as newborns) accompany parents to nicer dinners and get-togethers. This Ralph Lauren Hat and Booties Set brings baby’s outfit up a notch with crisp, classic white cable-knit cotton. The set is soft and goes with anything so it’s sure to become a staple accessory. If you know baby’s gender, the set is also available in Morning Pink and Pearl Blue.

While those pair of mini carpenter jeans might be adorable on an infant, sometimes they are simply not practical. There are days (months?) when the first priority for dressing baby is simplicity. Enter the coverall. This gorgeous, soft and perfectly simple Ralph Lauren Solid Coverall is a wonderful gift that will certainly be mom and baby’s favorite until baby outgrows it. The Coverall has details at neck and cuff, foldovers on the hands to prevent baby scratching and plenty of snaps to make dressing easier. Of course, it has the traditional embroidered pony on the chest and is machine washable.

Shop! Ralph Lauren Layette and Infant collections are available online at RalphLauren.com. The Hat & Booties are $55 and the Coverall is $25.

I am a participant in a Mom Central Consulting campaign for Ralph Lauren and received a Ralph Lauren Baby Layette set to help facilitate my review.

Great Books for Kids: Last Minute Gift Ideas

by Kate on December 20th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Reviews

Whether you’re shopping for the biggest holiday of the year or for a just because gift, books are an always an awesome, affordable present for kids of all ages. Here are some of our top picks of the books we’re loving right now.

Cooking with Henry and Elliebelly

Anyone with a younger sibling will empathize with Henry as he tries to record the imaginary cooking show Cooking with Henry and Elliebelly – because he has to do it with his younger sister. Like most little sisters, Eleanor just doesn’t *get* it: she throws a fit and insists on wearing pirate hats rather than chef hats, makes her doll Anne join the show, puts the wrong ingredients in the bowl (including Anne) and generally frustrates her big brother. The story is written as the conversation between the brother and sister (and occasionally mom who just wants the kids to get along), and is pretty much hysterical. It’s so a glimpse into the life of a family with two young kids. My son loves this book, and not surprisingly his little sister just doesn’t get it.

Miss Lina’s Ballerinas

You don’t have to be a dancer to appreciate the sweet prose of Miss Lina’s Ballerinas by Grace Maccarone and illustrated by Christine Davenler. The eight ballet dancers, all with names that rhyme with ballerina (who knew there were so many?!), of Miss Lina’s class are accustomed to dancing together in two rows of four. When Regina joins the studio, they don’t know what to do as a class of nine and find themselves flustered. Miss Lina suggests, “You will soon see how delightful it is to be three rows of three” and order is restored. The girls learn to adapt and welcome the change and addition of a new classmate.

Madlenka Soccer Star

We’re a little late to the Madlenka party, as she’s a bright little girl who has already starred in books by author and illustrator Peter Sis. City-dwelling Madlenka has a new soccer ball and she dribbles the streets looking for someone to play soccer with her. She imagines going toe to toe with a mailbox, neighborhood cats, garbage can, and parking meter before joining a friend for a match. This is a great book to get any little athlete motivated, and particularly fun for girl soccer players with the Women’s World Cup approaching in 2011.

A Sick Day for Amos McGee

Amos McGee is a kind, elderly man who works at the City Zoo. Every day in addition to his paid duties, he takes time to visit five animal friends: elephant, tortoise, penguin, rhinoceros and owl. When Amos McGee wakes one day too sick to report to work, his friends from the Zoo take the bus to visit him at his home. One of my favorite illustrations from the book, written by Phillip Christian Stead with illustrations by Erin Snead, is the image of all five animals waiting at the bus stop to ride to Amos’ house. Each animal takes a turn returning the kind deeds Amos did for them. It’s a very sweet book about friendship and I love that after years of caring for the animals they each returned some love by caring for Amos when he is sick.

Jake Goes Peanuts

Author Michael Wright tells the story of Jake, a picky eater who won’t try new foods and insists the only food he likes is peanut butter. Frustrated, his parents hatch a plan to encourage Jake to expand his diet. For one week, every meal they cook for Jake includes peanut butter – from pancakes to pot roast. Near the end of the week, when his mom presents Peanut Butter Cake, Jake reaches his limit. Much to his parents relief, the plan worked and Jake starts trying – and enjoying – new foods. Whether or not you have an ultra-picky eater like my son and Jake, Jake Goes Peanuts is an entertaining read – and if your kid just happens to pick up the idea that trying new food is okay, well that’s a bonus.

Happy Birthday to My 4 Year Old!

by Kate on December 19th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Life

How did that happen? How did my tiny 6 pound 9 baby ounce baby turn into a four year old boy? The most talkative, inquisitive, loving, sensitive boy.

Here’s the thing. He’s just a boy, but he’s my man of the house while my husband is deployed. He’s just a boy, but I expect a lot from him – too much, really – but he lives up to and exceeds my expectations every day. Like finding that he dressed himself for school without me asking. Or finding the playroom clean with all the toys in their places. Or catching him with his arm around my daughter when he doesn’t know I’m watching. He’s the best. And he only gets better with age.

I love you, little dude.

CPSC Bans Drop-Side Cribs

by Kate on December 18th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Shopping

Last week, the Consumer Products Safety Commission voted unanimously to pass strict new mandatory standards for cribs (full-size and non-full-size). This update is the first in nearly 30 years and is much needed because the CPSC has recalled more than 11 million cribs since 2007! The biggest change is the ban of drop-side cribs because which Detaching drop-side rails were associated with at least 32 infant suffocation and strangulation deaths since 2000.

From the CPSC

Once they become effective, the mandatory crib standards will: (1) stop the manufacture and sale of dangerous, traditional drop-side cribs; (2) make mattress supports stronger; (3) make crib hardware more durable; and (4) make safety testing more rigorous.

Effective June 2011, cribs manufactured, sold, or leased in the United States must comply with the new federal standards. Effective 24 months after the rule is published, child care facilities, such as family child care homes and infant Head Start centers, and places of public accommodation, such as hotels and motels, must have compliant cribs in their facilities.

Crib Safety Information

The CPSC has a very informative and helpful page dedicated to crib safety. The Crib Information Center has advice on how to put your baby to bed safely and information on crib and sleep positioner recalls. There is also more detailed information on the dangers of traditional drop-side cribs, including sample photographs that are frightening to any mom.

You can check this (rather long) list to find if your crib has been recalled.

Baby’s First Christmas Gift Ideas

by Kate on December 18th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Shopping

Baby’s first Christmas is pretty exciting and if it’s your first baby’s first Christmas (and you are anything like me), you’ve gone a little shopping crazy already. It get’s a little harder when you already have a ton of toys from an older child, or when baby is still itty bitty and not really doing much yet. Santa can’t forget about the baby! (Especially when older sibling is watching closely to be sure Santa is fair.) Here are some ideas to make sure it doesn’t look like Santa missed the baby.

The Classic First Christmas

I love a classic ornament that will last for years and can be baby’s special contribution to the family tree.

Reed & Barton Baby’s First Rocking Horse Sterling Silver Ornament ($66.79)

Reed & Barton Williamsburg Baby’s 1st Silver Plate Baby Cup Ornament ($23.99)

Toys and Entertainment

Baby Signing Time ($16.49 and up for sets)

Give your baby the gift of communication (and yourself an occasional break from being the sole entertainment).

Haba Rattles and Reaching Toys ($9 to $17)

Snuggles

Aden & Anais Muslin Swaddles and Sleep Sacks (price varies)

You can never go wrong with Aden & Anais. If you can afford it, go for the more expensive option. It’s higher quality that moms say is noticeably better.

Zoobie Pet (about $30, price varies based on size and style)

It’s a snuggle pet, a pillow, and a blanket.

Big Ticket Items

Christmas is a great time to get the things you are going to need for the next year. Santa is great about planning ahead like that.

Britax Boulevard 70 Convertible Car Seat, Onyx (on sale for $247.99)

Beaba Babycook Baby Food Maker ($134.99)

Extra Budget Friendly

There’s no reason Santa can’t bring baby diapers and wipes or formula, after all he brings everyone else socks and underwear. (Especially if you have an older child watching.) With a free Amazon Mom membership, you can save 30% on diapers and wipes and get free 2 day delivery (for up to a year).

Pampers Sensitive Baby Wipes Refills, 192 Count Packages (Pack of 4)

($23 before the 30% discount…about $16 with)

Stocking Stuffers for Mama

by Kate on December 17th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Shopping

If you are at all like me, your stocking is one of the last to be filled, if at all. This year I have informed my husband that it is important my stocking gets a little love as well, so my very observant toddler doesn’t think Mommy has been neglected by Santa.  Besides, let’s face it, we deserve some fun little gifts to look forward to! You will find some fun basics (socks and underwear were always a stocking staple growing up!), indulgent treats, and some good ideas that your Santa can fill locally.  I highly recommend printing this list and sticking it under his pillow, or email it to someone who loves you best, your own Mama! They will always look out for you:)

Sweet Treats

Sweet Moment from Pillsbury (2 for $6)

I am addicted to these. When I need a Mommy time out, I pretend to be looking in the fridge for milk for the kids. Instead I am finding a moment of calm with a bite of yummy chocolate. I almost regret sharing them with you, as you will now be addicted too. You’re welcome! The best part? you can get them at your local grocery week, after week.

Godiva Dark Chocolate Truffle Gems ($15)

Needed Basics and Beauty

Victoria Secret gift card, (varies!)

Come on, you know you could use a new bra or undies. When was the last time you bought underwear that didn’t have Dora or Thomas on it?   Significant other note: Even better, offer to keep kids entertained for an afternoon so Mama can go spend this card solo. Bra shopping with little people=not fun.

Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Flawless Definiton Mascara,  ($18)

This is a fantastic everyday mascara for moms. Enough to make your eyes pop without making you feel like you are “made up”.

Flourish Bath and Body ($9)

Shea Butter Hand Cream ($10)

Best remedy for dry winter hands. I keep one in my diaper bag, one in my nightstand, and one in my car. Love the light scent and indulgent feel without being greasy.

Detangling Comb ($7)

Quick story. I have used this comb every time I wash my hair for the last, 15 years or so. When I was pregnant this last year, it finally broke. I sat on the bathroom floor and cried. Hormones? Anyway, I got right online to order my new one. Oh, and I waited to wash my hair again until it arrived. No lie. I won’t even attempt combing wet hair without this little gem. Love it.

Active Mama

RRS Dryroad Wool Double Tab 3pk ($31.49)

Not only are these running socks the cutest, they are made from merino wool, a natural insulating, breathing, moisture wicking fabric. Your feet will stay warm and dry on those cold December runs.

Luon Running Cap ($15)

This photo is of the back of the hat, so you could see the most awesome feature- a little hole for your ponytail! Genius. I have another Lululemon hat similar to this one and I LOVE it.

Local Thoughts

  • Give Mama a gift card to whichever local coffee shop has a DRIVE THRU! I never treat myself to coffee out and about simply because it isn’t worth schlepping the crew into my local shop to get my latte.
  • Spa gift cards along with an actual scheduled  appointment date and a babysitter are always appreciated!

Disney Princess Carriage Playcenter Review + Giveaway

by Kate on December 17th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways, Reviews, Toys

The Tolly Tots Disney Princess toys collection includes everything your little one needs to turn play into a magical experience. In addition to princess baby dolls, Tolly Tots has doll accessories like strollers, baby cradles and carriages fit for a princess. The Princess Carriage Playcenter is a fun setting for play that would make Kate Middleton proud.

Disney Carriage Playcenter

Our Disney Carriage Doll Playset is designed to accommodate your favorite 15-inch Disney Princess doll. This fanciful rolling carriage opens to reveal a luxurious boudoir fit for royalty! Our Disney Carriage Doll Playset includes:

  • A pretty canopy bed
  • Mirrored vanity
  • Wardrobe chest

Princess Playtime

I made a major mistake by opening the box to put together the Carriage in front of my daughter. Oh my word, she stood behind me chanting, “Cincess! Cincess! I play!” Thankfully, it really didn’t take long to assemble. Most of the Carriage snaps together and it is secured with 8 screws. So the second problem we encountered is that my daughter thought SHE was the princess meant to live in the Carriage Playhouse. She admired herself in the mirror, tried to sit on the bed and at on the vanity stool. It was adorable, actually, but she had to get used to the idea that it was for her dolls and not her.

The Carriage Playcenter works with any doll about 15 inches in size, so don’t worry if you don’t have a Disney Princess doll yet. There is a bed, vanity with mirror and working light(!), hangers for doll clothes and a small trunk to store doll clothes and shoes. It’s really like a doll’s bedroom in a cute carriage package. My daughter’s favorite part seems to be starring at herself in the mirror, turning the light on and off, and tucking dolls into the canopy bed with blanket. As she gets older and can imagine other ways to play with her dolls I think she’ll explore new pretend play scenarios with the Playcenter, like using the vanity for the dolls (and not herself) and changing, hanging and storing clothes.

The Playcenter folds into a closed carriage, which is really more for storage (admittedly, cute storage) than for playing. It doesn’t roll along like you might suspect, though there are small wheels on the bottom of the bed posts, because the large wheels are stationary.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… My daughter really loves this Playcenter, which is honestly like a doll house for her dolls. There are very sweet accents and details like bows and hearts that make it truly princess-y. If you have a little one who likes to play with dolls, and specifically princesses, they will definitely enjoy this.

Or Not to Buy… The Playcenter is a plastic toy made in China, which is something to consider. Obviously that doesn’t mean anything to how much my daughter enjoys it, but it’s worth noting this isn’t a toy that will last 5 generations.

Shop! The Princess Carriage Playcenter is currently available at Toys R Us – online and for in store pickup – for $59.99 (down from a suggested price of $99.99).

Win! A Tolly Tots Princess Carriage Playcenter!

Remote Control Cars + Laser Tag = Battle Machines

by Kate on December 16th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Reviews, Toys

Battle Machines answer the burning question, “What do you get when you combine remote control cars and laser tag?” And the answer is a crazy game most kids will go nuts for.

How It Works

Use your Remote Controller to navigate your Battle Machine into position to shoot your opponent with an invisible IR (InfraRed) laser to knock one level off of their shield. Be careful not to allow yourself to get shot. The first person to score 3 points, knocking their opponents shield down to zero is the WINNER!!

The Battle Machine sets include two cars (Ford F-350 Superduty and Chevy Silverado 3500HD, Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro, or Ford Mustang and Chevy Silverado) and two controllers.

Let’s Play

This is one of those toys that parents can get into as much as kids, so I saved the unveiling for a night when my brother was over for dinner. As I suspected, he play with helped my son get the hang of using the cars. The set comes with two cars and two remotes. You can adjust the settings so that either remote will control either car. The goal is obviously to use the remote to “tag” the other car with the laser three times before you get hit three times.

I don’t hide the fact that I’m not really a fan of violent toys. My son doesn’t own any toy guns, and when someone gave him a water gun we referred to it as a “water squirter” (much to my husband’s amusement). I wasn’t quite sure how this toy would fit into that mentality but it’s actually a pretty skill game that helps my son with fine motor and problem solving since it’s not completely intuitive to understand how to move and control the cars. And, honestly, my son has barely mastered that part of the game, let alone the actual laser tagging of the other car.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The Battle Machine set is a lot of boy’s dream toy – blending remote control cars and laser tag. My son is definitely on the young side, but I think older grade school kids – and adults! – will be thrilled to get their hands on these remotes.

Or Not to Buy… The remotes can be a little finicky and we’ve had to stay pretty close to the cars to properly control them.

Shop! Battle Machines set of two cars and two remotes from Toys R Us for $54.99. Select sets are also available on Amazon.
