Swanson’s Great Stuffing Debate: Recipe + $50 Giveaway

by Kate on November 21st, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways

My husband and I are a military family, so we’ve moved around a lot. We’ve counted our Thanksgiving blessings with friends, family and restaurant staff across this nation. We’ve enjoyed the flavors of the Southwest, oysters and “gourmet” ingredients in dressings and stuffings over the years. When preparing our own dinner, I always come back to this corn bread dressing recipe that I found the first year we celebrated together. I’ve adapted it over the years, but it never fails to please. So when Swanson’s offered up The Great Stuffing Debate challenge, I accepted.

My Favorite Stuffing Recipe

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  • 4 cups crumbled cornbread
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 3 1/2 cups herb stuffing
  • 32 oz Swanson’s chicken broth (1 box or approximately two cans; you can vary this amount depending upon your taste)
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped celery
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped mushrooms
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 Tablespoon poultry seasoning

You might notice in the photo that I have sage, thyme, marjoram, rosemary and nutmeg, but no “poultry seasoning.” Every year I think I have poultry seasoning in the cabinet and don’t. Every year I have to do an internet search for the ingredients and mix my own. If this happens to you (but it won’t because you are more organized than me), you can find the recipe for poultry seasoning here.

Mix all ingredients together in a large mixing bowl and then pour into a greased baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour or until golden brown. Remove from oven and let stand for 10 minutes prior to serving.

Yum!

The Great Stuffing Debate

I clearly have my favorite, but I know others have their favorite recipes as well. So does Swanson. That’s why they are sponsoring “The Great Stuffing Debate“. If you visit the site, you can find recipes, cast your vote, see dancing turkeys and view Swanson’s line of products. Personally, I loved the Thanksgiving spoof with Zandra and Sue. Check it out:

Celebrate the Movie Tangled: Tollytots Rapunzel Doll & Vanity Giveaway

by Kate on November 20th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways

My son loves going to the movies, but the fun usually lives on well beyond the theater when he “plays” the roles of his favorite characters and acts out his favorite scenes over and over (and over) again. We went through a phase when I had to call him Lightning McQueen. And then there was the period when he insisted we all call each other Princess names. I have no doubt the new Disney movie Tangled will create the same buzz and interest in kids who will want to “play Rapunzel” to continue the fun of the movie. Tollytots has Disney princess dolls covered, including a line of Rapunzel dolls just in time to celebrate the release of Tangled!

About Tollytots

Our mission is to create unique and innovative products that combine classic toys with leading edge interactive technology.  We want to create a whole new play experience for children and their caregivers.

Tollytots has formed strategic licensing relationships with most trusted and recognized brands in the world; Fisher Price, Disney and Graco children’s products. We produce an extensive doll and doll accessory line under these leading brands.

Rapunzel Doll & Vanity

Shop! Tollytots Tangled Rapunzel dolls will be available at Target.com. The Doll and Vanity Set retails for $39.99.

KABOOST Your Tot Up to the Table

by Kate on November 19th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Reviews, Toddler

Dinner time at my house means one thing: there will be a constant chorus of me saying, “Sit on your bottom” to my son. He is at that in between stage where he’s too old to sit at a high chair, but too little to sit on a regular chair unassisted. He wiggles and sits on his feet and twirls… and oh my, it is so annoying. When researching a good option for him, I was super excited to find the Kaboost Chair Booster.

What is KABOOST?

KABOOST is a compact and portable chair booster that raises the height of kitchen and dining room chairs so your child can sit at the table just like a big kid. With KABOOST, the entire dining experience is enhanced for both child and family.

KABOOST Specs

  • Quick & Easy: snaps-on chair in seconds, no assembly required
  • Sturdy: engineered to improve chair stability, holds up to 300 pounds
  • Rubberized feet: non-slip and won’t scratch floors, grips chair legs firmly into place
  • 2 Height Positions: same heights as standard booster seats (4.5″ and 3.75″), grows with child
  • Adjustable spring system: fits most 4-legged chairs (round or square legs), stays attached even when chair is moved

A KABOOST Up to the Table

KABOOST Chair Booster is not your typical booster seat that you attach to the top of the chair for your tot to sit in. Rather, the KABOOST goes on the BOTTOM of any four legged chair you already have. At nearly 4, my son does not want to sit in a booster seat – he thinks he’s too old for that, and I have a hard time disagreeing with him. The KABOOST is genius in the sense that your child can sit in a chair just like the grownups, but they can sit up higher and closer to the table like a child needs.

See how much closer to the table he is with the KABOOST? He loves his new “high up chair” and I really like that he’s in a better position to enjoy a meal.

The KABOOST has four adjustable legs, that you can pull to lengthen and move around so that it fits on most chairs. We have used the KABOOST on a dining room chair and our kitchen table chair – and it worked perfectly on both. The arms of the booster stretch and are spring-loaded which allows it to fit most chairs, but also means it fits snugly and securely against the chair legs. Once it’s attached to a chair, you can truly lift and move the chair and the KABOOST stays in place.

Another great feature of the KABOOST is that it is highly portable. The four arms of the booster can slide together a compact fold, and there is even a carrying case. I think this will make frequent trips with us when we have dinner with family.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The KABOOST Portable Chair Booster is a great alternative to a traditional booster chair. It is easy to use, gives older toddlers and preschoolers a much needed boost to the table, and is affordable. I love that it stays securely on the chair when I move the chair to clean while at the same time it’s easily portable.

Or Not to Buy… The KABOOST doesn’t provide additional support or security to the seat of the chair itself, so your child must be old enough to sit at the table by himself. The Booster didn’t really help keep my son in his seat, which we can chalk up to a need to improve table manners!

Shop! The Kaboost Portable Chair Booster is $37.95 in Chocolate, Green and Natural and can be purchased from Amazon. You can purchase the Travel Bag separately for $6.50.

Holiday Gift Giving Dilemma

by Kate on November 19th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Life

Does anyone else have this problem?

My son Jack spends a good amount of his week in daycare, so I feel like I should get his teacher a gift for Christmas. But what should I give? What’s too much to spend, what’s too little? Are home baked gifts yummy – or icky and cheap?

As experienced teachers, Monica and Shannon have agreed to give me (and anyone else who could use it) advice on caregiver gift giving and The Shopping Mama crew will put together a mini-gift guide to help you find the perfect gift.

So here are the questions I’ve come up with so far. Feel free to add any questions or advice you have!

  • Are teacher gifts expected? What about assistants, helpers, librarians, office staff, cafeteria ladies?
  • What’s a good price range for caregiver/teacher gifts? What if I make more money or less money than average?
  • How much is too much? (When do I look like I’m trying for favoritism?)
  • What’s the real deal on home baked gifts?
  • Tell us the truth, what do you think of the “world’s greatest teacher” or “apple” gifts?
  • Are any gifts off limits or otherwise a good idea to avoid?
  • What if you/your kid doesn’t like the teacher?
  • What if the teacher is really special?

Who Else?

I’m always at a loss as to who should get something over the holidays. Who do you think should (or need not) be on everyone’s shopping list? Weigh in with your advice.

  • UPS/FedEx guy (my last one rocked, this guy is kind of mean, but I do make him deliver a lot of stuff)
  • Mail carrier
  • Cleaning Lady
  • Piano Teacher
  • Bus Driver
  • Barber/Hairdresser/Nail Tech
  • Pharmacist (you know you love us)
  • Pediatrician/OB
  • Newspaper Boy
  • …Who am I forgetting?…

Tell us what YOU think about this gift giving dilemma! And look for our mini shopping guide posts soon.

Toy: Diggin Wobble Deck

Buy It For: This is a great way to get your older kids and young tweens moving. Recommended for kids between 5 and 12.

Why We Like It: The Wobble Deck is a balance board that helps kids develop coordination and strength. We love that this board has an audio function plays music to encourage kids to move and comes with three game variations to kick up the fun. And, while this does remind us of the grown up torture work out device known as a BOSU, the fitness benefits are undeniable.
