Protect Little Feet With Stonzwear: Stonz Booties Review + Giveaway

by Monica on October 13th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Baby, Giveaways, Reviews, Toddler

New and different products for babies and toddlers are what The Shopping Mama is all about, so when I had the opportunity to review these cool boots by Stonz for little ones I was more than thrilled to do so. I had never seen anything like them, and with winter right around the corner, I was certainly interested and wanted to learn more.

The Story Behind Stonz Booties

Lisa’s favourite quote is “There is no such thing as bad weather; only inappropriate clothing.”

As an active mom based on Canada’s wet and rugged West Coast, Lisa discovered that finding warm footwear for her young kids was near impossible. With her five-month old son in a backpack, Lisa resorted to wrapping scarves around her son’s legs to keep him warm. When she met another mom who had 6 years earlier made a boot that looked a lot like a fleece-lined chalk bag for her child, Lisa instantly knew these booties could fill a need in the market. Together, they created some booties samples – made with a fleece lined inner and a coated nylon exterior. The booties were designed with stylish appliqués, soft soles for a custom fit, and toggles at both the calf and ankle so that they stayed on.

After five years in business, Lisa and the Stonz team introduced Stonz Linerz, Mittz and Hatz. They are constantly delighted to hear from parents and grandparents from all over who are enjoying the booties as well as the new gear – just as Stonz intended.

What Makes Stonz Booties Different

These Booties are just really cool! I love that they are so flexible, and can be worn either over another pair of shoes or alone. Think about those days when you want to send your little one to school in boots, but want him to take them off once he gets to school? These are perfect for those type of days.  Plus, they are machine washable, and even better, they actually stay on! I was torn as to what to get for my daughter for colder weather since she isn’t even crawling yet. But, she will be out and about with us, and I need her little tootsies to stay warm – I get so annoyed with shoes and boots that just don’t stay on. These boots will be perfect for her. Plus, she will most likely start walking while wearing them and we all know that soft soled shoes are recommended for developing walkers.

Our Experience

The booties arrived and I was so excited to try them on the kids. We also were lucky enough to try out the linerz that are also available to add an extra layer of warmth for the kids.  They were super easy to pop right into the boots and pull the boots on. Simply pull the bungie cords to tighten, and they aren’t falling off! My son wanted to show you how “fast ” he could run in them, so hence the motion picture below.  He also is super into diggers and all things construction, so the digger booties were certainly a hit!  He is so excited for snow that everyday he asks me if Fall is over yet.  Baby girl just sat there and wanted to chew on them, but she looked cute nonetheless.

Obviously we haven’t had the opportunity to  really test them out in cold or wet weather, as it has been sunny and warm here.  Though based on the quality of construction and my son’s eagerness to wear them, I think we have a winner to keeping the kids nice and dry!  Not to mention, my mommy pals Jennifer, Halle, and Trista have them for their little ones, so they must be great, right?

Take a look at all of the fun styles and patterns of booties available. I really had a hard time choosing between the different styles for my daughter. Like I said, the little guy is obsessed with diggers, so that was a no-brainer for him, though I would have loved to get him the Brown Stripe or Navy Polka Dot styles. Along with the booties, take a look at the adorable and functional Mittz and Hatz. All way too adorable for your little snow people!

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… Though I haven’t truly tested them in the proper elements, I love how easy they are to get on, and how well they actually stay put. I think these boots are certainly going to get a great amount of use!

Or Not to Buy… If you live in warmer climates, these might not be for you. Though the holidays are right around the corner, and these would make a fantastic gift.

Wordless Wednesday: The Chocolate Room

by Kate on October 13th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Weekly Features, Wordless Wednesday

I’ve been enjoying Vegas with the all the women on my mom’s side of the family: my mom, sister, aunt, cousin, and second cousin. It’s been a blast – and a much needed girls getaway. One of the highlights was a delicious, and I mean freaking delicious, Sunday brunch at Jasmine restaurant at the Bellagio. We sat lakeside and ate the most wonderful food for hours. Dessert had its own room. And I named it “The Chocolate Room” because it smelled like chocolate.

Great Gift For New Dads: DaddyScrubs Review + Giveaway

by Kate on October 12th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Baby Shopping Guide, Giveaways, Reviews

Poor Dad. First we ladies get the bridal showers, then baby comes along, and we are knee deep in baby showers and gifts. It is nice to think about the guys when planning baby gifts as well! Daddy Scrubs is a great way to let Dad know you are excited for him, too.

About Daddy Scrubs

DaddyScrubs™ is the offspring of Robert Nickell, who fathered his first four children more than 20 years ago. DaddyScrubs™ was conceived when Robert, who remarried in 2007, discovered he was about to be a father all over again in the fall of 2009!

Not wanting to endure the pains of wearing uncomfortable street clothes while comforting his laboring wife, Robert hatched the idea of creating doctor-like scrubs for himself. It seemed a natural thing for him to do — since Robert is a pharmacist by profession.

To eliminate the confusion between “who’s the doctor” and “who’s the daddy,” Robert fashioned the concept of “I’m The Daddy™” medical scrubs.

Great Baby Gift for Daddy

The  Baby Shopping Guide is full of wonderful things for baby, and this one is unique because it is specifically geared towards Dad.  I know my husband started to feel a little left out after my numerous showers and endless gifts that rolled in for either me or our unborn baby.  Even though they weren’t things he particularly got excited about anyway, just the fact that I was literally being “showered” with gifts me him feel a little left out.  I think the Daddy Scrubs idea are great to give a fun, useful  gift to Dad so that he feels a part of the mix.  Daddy Scrubs are well made, very soft, and as you may already know, there really aren’t too many things more comfortable than scrubs! At least on person should be comfortable in the labor and delivery room, right?

The Daddy in our house was happy to try them out, and was quite pleased with their comfort. Even though he won’t be in the delivery room anytime soon, he enjoys wearing them lounging watching football.  I also like that Daddy Scrubs come in a variety of colors to choose from. There are a few other items available at DaddyScrubs.com for you to choose from when shopping for the Daddy-To-Be in your life!

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… Daddy Scrubs are a unique, fun, useful gift that give a little shout out to the parent who tends to get a little lost in the mix in the beginning of parenthood, so why wouldn’t you buy them for him?

Or Not to Buy… The only glitch I can think of is for a C section Dads (I think? I didn’t have one, so not 100% sure) have to wear sterile scrubs, and will have to change into hospital issue scrubs. No big deal though, he can slip these back on for the days after!

Shop! Daddy Scrubs are available at DaddyScrubs.com for $39.95.

Win! Your Own Daddy Scrubs!

How to Enter: Visit Daddy Scrubs and leave a comment here about a Daddy-to-be who would like the scrubs, and which color he would wear.

Bonus Entries – valid only after completing the first required entry. Please leave a separate comment for each you do.

Giveaway ends October 31. Open to US residents only.

Explore the Wild with the Schleich Figures & Airplane (Review + Giveaway

by Kate on October 11th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways, Reviews, Toys

In the past few months, my son’s imagination has really started to run wild. And, when he’s not telling tall tales about why he can’t eat vegetables, it’s a real pleasure to chat with him and watch his imagination flourish. It’s fun when he gets a toy or story book that helps him create elaborate stories and adventures. Schleich figures are ideal toys for kids like mine to develop their imaginations. While the figures themselves are detailed and beautiful to look at, they are simple and work only on “kid power.” There are no batteries, no power buttons – the figures and animals only do something when your kid creates a story for them.

Over the next couple months, just in time for your holiday shopping, I’ll be highlighting several different Schleich toys with reviews and giveaways! This month, we’re featuring the Schleich Airplane.

Schleich Airplane

Providing imaginative play for a child’s pretend travels, this airplane will travel around the world with their Schleich figurines. The Airplane comes with a pilot and has cockpit doors, fright bay, engine compartment and more. It portrays the type of traditional fixed wing prop-plane commonly seen in the widest regions of Africa, the Australian Outback and the plains of Argentina.

Playing With the Airplane

The Schleich Airplane is different from most other Schleich toys we have for several reasons: it’s larger, has to be put together and, well, it’s not an animal. If you’re familiar with Schleich toys, you know most of them are about the size of my hand – give or take a bit, with adult animals larger and baby animals smaller. The Airplane is an obvious exception – and it’s just the size you would imagine. As you can see in the photos, it’s a good size for my almost 4 year old to manipulate and play with.

The Airplane needs to be put together, but unlike a fussy model airplane, it’s very quick and simple. My husband and I put it together with my son and it was actually pretty fun, not at all difficult. Which is good, because my son has taken it apart (on purpose and on accident) numerous times since. (You can see in the photo below that due to a rough “crash landing”, the back tire fell off.)

Schleich Celebrates the 75th Anniversary

To celebrate Schleich’s 75th Anniversary, participating retailers will feature Schleich Airplanes in specially-marked boxes with the 75th Anniversary jubilee symbol. Those specially-marked boxes will include a voucher to redeem a collectible FREE and EXCLUSIVE zebra-striped figure to match the Airplane — a pig, giraffe, penguin or kangaroo. These specialty marked airplane boxes with vouchers will be sold through 2010, based on availability at participating specialty toy stores so make sure you check for the Anniversary symbol.

Shop! The Schleich Airplane suggested retail price is $54.99; the Indian Elephant and Calf are $6.99 and $4.49 respectively. Schleich figures and animals can be found at stores nationwide and also purchased online.

Win! A Collection of Wild Animals from Schleich! Minimum retail value of $25.

Original & Affordable Baby Gift: Sticky Bellies Review + Giveaway

by Kate on October 8th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Baby, Baby Shopping Guide, Giveaways, Reviews

If you are heading to a baby shower soon, or have an out of own friend getting ready for a new addition, Sticky Bellies are the perfect unique gift to pop in the mail.

About Sticky Bellies

Taking pictures of your gorgeous baby is nothing new. People have been documenting their child’s monthly growth since the days of Polaroids and painted portraits. But with advanced technology you now have the opportunity to SHARE your photos, with friends and family all around the world, as often as you like. People can literally watch your child grow up in front of their very eyes……on Facebook, in e-mails, and on photo sharing websites. And those old-fashioned photos with your camera’s date stamp in the corner just won’t cut it. You need a creative, stylish and EASY way to document your child’s monthly growth….. You need Sticky Bellies.

How to Use Sticky Bellies

  1. Remove sticker from backing
  2. Apply sticker to baby’s onesie or shirt
  3. Take pictures…lots of them!
  4. Remove sticker
  5. Throw sticker away or save for your baby book
  6. Repeat each month
  7. Thank Sticky Bellies for making your life easier and your pictures cuter!

Great Baby  Gift

The  Baby Shopping Guide is full of wonderful things for baby, and this is one of my favorite items. Sticky Bellies are an inexpensive way to send a very unique baby gift that will help mom and dad create lasting memories with their little one.   They are extremely colorful and bright, and each month is a little bit different design.  It is great that they are also very gender neutral-perfect for your friend who isn’t finding out the gender.

I love that they have a stitched look around the circumference of the sticker, so it appears as if it was sewn on to the onesie like a darling applique.  I also love the idea of sticking the sticker in the baby book after you have taken the photos for the month, a great memento of those days that just go by way, way too fast!

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… I think this is one of those things that everyone should have a few on hand at all times to send out as a quick thoughtful baby gift whenever you need it.

Or Not to Buy… I guess if you are super crafty and a computer/graphic wizard you may be able to somehow make these on your own. But I’m not that crafty!

Shop! Sticky Bellies are available at StickyBellies.com for the fantastic price of  $14.99.  Take a look at some of the other unique items such as huggalugg leghuggers and photo keepsake items to purchase there as well!

Win! Your own set of Sticky Bellies!

How to Enter: Visit Sticky Bellies and leave a comment here about another item you think is just too cute or who you would give the Sticky Bellies to if you won.

Bonus Entries – valid only after completing the first required entry. Please leave a separate comment for each you do.

Giveaway ends October 22. Open to US residents only.

Total Mom Total Gym Update: Check Out My Arms!

by Kate on October 7th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Life

We are officially in crazy-over-scheduled-preparing-to-deploy-trips-vacation-mode. And it is so stressful. I am honestly thisclose to having a total breakdown. Like I mentioned last week, this is one of the reasons I so enjoy working out. I’m nervous about the next several weeks because we’ll be traveling and I obviously won’t have the Total Gym with me. I’ll fit in walks and maybe a hotel treadmill, but I really don’t want to lose any of the strength or endurance I’ve built. (I’ve worked up to a level 4 on many exercises!)

Today we had a little farewell for my husband at his work. We took a family photo out by the plane. And, do you know what I noticed in this picture?

Not my son acting crazy, or my daughter distracted or my good looking husband. No, I am totally staring at MY ARM! Look, there’s, like, definition.

Okay, so I just showed my husband and he wasn’t all that impressed. Whatever. I can tell a difference in my arms – among other more muscle-y parts – and I like it.
