365 Days of Children’s Clothes is Back!

by Kate on October 24th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Blogging

I started the year with the lofty goal of sharing what my kids wear every day. I knew making it 365 days would be tough, and I made it about 6 months until I got so far behind that I gave up. Well, now that my husband has deployed, I the 365 blog is back! It only makes sense: he’s on a “365 day remote tour” so it’s a great way to make sure he can see a picture a day of the kids.

The 365 Days of Children’s Clothes will still be about the clothes – letting you know where they are from and what I like / don’t like about the outfit. So, head over now and check out today’s clothes and make sure you visit every day to see what they’re wearing.

Hyland’s Recalls Popular Teething Tablets

by Kate on October 24th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Parenting

Yesterday the FDA recommended that parents stop using Hyland’s Teething Tablets. The Standard Homeopathic Company also announced that it is voluntarily recalling its Hyland’s Teething Tablets based on the FDA’s concerns and to examine its manufacturing process.

Homeopathic Products

Homeopathy is quite different from traditional medicine. The National Center for Homeopathy describes homeopathy as:

Homeopathy is a system of medical therapy that uses very small doses of medicines, or remedies. These remedies are prepared from substances found in nature. Nevertheless, homeopathy should not be confused with herbal medicine. These two systems of medicine are very different. Herbal medicine uses tinctures of botanical substances, whereas homeopaths use ultradilute “micro”doses made from not only plants, but minerals or any other substance found in nature.

Homeopathic products, like Hyland’s Teething Tablets, are not reviewed by the FDA for safety or efficacy unless there are complaints about safety. Hyland’s Teething Tablets are very popular with parents and have a lot of anecdotal evidence of effectiveness, but don’t have any major clinical trials showing that they work or are safe. Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, a highly respective resource used by physicians and pharmacists, rates Hyland’s Teething Tablets as a 5 (neither safe and effective or unsafe and ineffective) based on known studies.

Regarding this recall, The Standard Homeopathic Company states:

After in-depth analysis, a comprehensive review of the company’s adverse event report log, and more than 85 years of safe usage, the company is confident that Hyland’s Teething Tablets are safe for infants and toddlers.

“We initiated this voluntary recall to ensure our consumers know that their families’ safety and health are our top priorities,” said Mark Phillips, PharmD, President and Chief Pharmacist of Standard Homeopathic Company. “We are committed to maintaining and deserving the trust they have placed in Hyland’s. We have worked for 107 years to build relationships with our consumers. We intend to preserve that tradition of trust.”

Concerns over Belladonna

Because Hyland’s Teething Tablets are a homeopathic product, they contain very low levels of ingredients, including belladonna. Belladonna is a potentially toxic ingredient also known as deadly nightshade that can be used both as a poison and a medicine. The FDA is concerned that recently tested tablets have not contained a consistent amount of belladonna. Serious side effects have been reported to the FDA that may be a result of the belladonna and the FDA’s inspection of the manufacturing process has found substandard control procedures. Additionally, Hyland’s teething tablets do not come in child resistant packaging so there are some reports of children taking an “overdose” of tablets.

Symptoms of Belladonna Toxicity

Call your Peditrician if your child shows the following signs after taking Hyland’s Teething Tablets:

  • depressed level of consciousness
  • seizure
  • difficulty or slowed breathing
  • lethargy
  • sleepiness
  • muscle weakness
  • skin flushing
  • constipation
  • difficulty urinating
  • agitation

What to do with the Teething Tablets

All lots of Hyland’s Teething Tablets have been recalled and the FDA recommends that parents stop using all product immediately.

Consumers that are concerned about the safety of the product may contact Standard Homeopathic Company for instructions on a refund or replacement product. For these instructions or information regarding how to return or dispose of the product, consumers should log on to www.hylandsteething.com/recall or call 1-877-496-5044 (Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern Time, and Saturday-Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time).

Christmas Shopping: Block Obsessed

by Kate on October 22nd, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Shopping

This year will be my little guy’s first Christmas and I’m getting excited about buying him presents. I know we have some great gift ideas coming up on The Shopping Mama, but, while Kate finishes up her move, I thought I would get some advice from experienced mommies and share my current obsession…blocks. Here’s what I’m looking at for my little guy.

Tiny Giraffe Blocks

Of course! I can’t wait to put these in my guy’s room…up on a high shelf until he learns to respect (not chew on) pretty things. Okay, they are really for me, but I’m getting them anyway. Sets of 3 are $18 and personalized sets of 12 are $34. Check out TINY GIRAFFE: CLASSIC WOODEN BLOCKS FOR THE MODERN BABY for more information about these adorable blocks or Shop at Etsy.

Tegu Magnetic Blocks

Kate just wrote about these super cool blocks and I’m already planning to get them when little man is a few years older. Their ability to form gravity defying shapes is so much fun, if a bit advanced for my 9 month old. Did you miss the post? Head on over to UNLEASH CREATIVITY WITH TEGU MAGNETIC BLOCKS to see what you missed. The Original Set of 52 Blocks is $100 and the Discovery Set is $55. Shop Tagu.com.

My First Green Toys My First Blocks

I love over-sized blocks, little guy loves anything he can chew on and I love that these are safe for him to chew on. The 18 brightly colored block set is made from recycled milk containers colored with soy inks. I would say they look like a quiet to, but I’m pretty sure they will be drummed against the floor, the wall and probably the dog, but at least they don’t run out of batteries. See the full review at GREEN TOYS GOES BABY WITH MY FIRST GREEN TOYS. The block set is on sale for just over $16 at Amazon.com

Melissa and Doug Jumbo Cardboard Blocks

Speaking of over-sized blocks, these classic cardboard blocks are reminding me of childhood. I can’t wait to build a fort with them. Or build towers and knock them over. For $31.46 (on sale from $39.99) for a set of 40 I can see another package from Amazon.com in my future.

What are you thinking about for your kids this Christmas? Any favorites? Any Duds?

Infantino+Annabel Karmel Food Accessory Review

by Kate on October 22nd, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Baby, Reviews

I am so excited about the next phase of the Infantino Test Drive Program.  We have the opportunity to try out a bunch of different new products for preparing and storing baby food! This is so fun for me, as I have always made all of my baby food for both of my kids. I can’t wait to give all of these products a try!  Even more exciting is that they are Annabel Karmel food making accessories! If you aren’t familiar with her, you should be!  She is a fantastic baby food expert who has written many books on the subject, and Kate interviewed Annabel Karmel last year (check it out) last year for The Shopping Mama. So even more reason to give these products a try.

About the Annabel Karmel Food Accessories

Welcome to Annabel Karmel – everything you need to feed your baby or toddler and make mealtime fun. As your baby grows into a child, it’s an incredibly exciting and busy time. Annabel Karmel can give you a helping hand, with cooking and mealtime accessories that make for easy prep, healthy cooking, fun eating and simple storage and clean up.

Our Experience

When I opened the box containing all of the Annabel Karmel food making accessories I was so excited to see so many fun things to help make feeding baby a great experience.  My daughter is 8 months old and I have made all of her food from her first solids at 6 months old. She has loved everything I have prepared for her, and I look forward to trying new things with all of these fun products.

I was able to try the freeze tray immediately, as I had just made a batch of bananas and mangoes for her. I will be using the rest of the things and give you another update in  a future post. The other one that I had the opportunity to try was the double decker meal box. We were going out to lunch and needed to bring along some food for baby, and this was the perfect way to bring all of her needs in a compact container.  I was really impressed with the thought that went into this product, it was perfect!

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… If you have been making baby food, or thinking about trying it, these will certainly make it more fun, and help you create so many great meals for your baby.

Or Not to Buy… If you aren’t going to make your own baby food, you may not need to try these. However, you will save so much money making your own, so give it a try! (Check our this post on the basics on how to make baby food.) Not to mention it is more fun to shop for these fun accessories than boring jars of food.

Shop! All of the products are available at Babies R Us, and range in price from $6.99 to $15.99  For More Information on Infantino Products, you can find them on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

Disclosure: “I am a participant in a Mom Central Consulting campaign for Infantino and have received various Infantino products as part of my participation.”

Extra Halloween Candy? Donate it to The Troops!

by Malia on October 21st, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Life, Parenting

Every year kids bring home unbelievable amounts of candy from Halloween Trick-or-Treating and you know it ends up one of two places: 1. rotting their teeth or 2. on Mom’s thighs. This year, consider something different. Donate that extra candy (after enjoying a few pieces, of course) to Operation Gratitude and they will send it to our troops.

[Operation Gratitude will] send the candy to U.S. Military deployed in combat through Operation Gratitude or other Military support groups.

The troops love the candy–for themselves, but also to give out to the children in the communities they patrol. Many Service Members have told us that the children gave them information on where bombs and bad guys were hidden after receiving our candy and stuffed animals. They said: “You are not just putting smiles on our faces; you are saving our lives.”

Turn it into an activity by having your children write letters and draw pictures for the troops to send along with the candy. Personal letters are HIGHLY needed, as are small plush animals (like Beanie Babies and Webkinz), handmade scarves and donations to help pay for postage.

How to Donate

  • Find a dentist in your area who is “buying back” Halloween candy by going to halloweencandybuyback.com and entering your zip code to search.
  • Encourage your dentist to participate in the candy buy back program (s/he can go to the same webpage above).
  • Mail the candy and letters to: Operation Gratitude/California Army National Guard, 17330 Victory Blvd., Van Nuys, CA 91406, ATTN:  Charlie Othold
  • Go to opgratitude.com for more information on what is needed and how you can donate all holiday season.
  • Learn more about Halloween Candy Buy-Back Program and like it on Facebook.

What a great way to  support our troops and help save lives (and save ourselves some calories)!

Graco Recalls Quattro and MetroLite Strollers

by Kate on October 20th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Shopping

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced today that older models of Graco Quattro and MetroLite Strollers and Travel Systems have been recalled because of strangulation risk. An unbuckled child can slip between the seat and the snack tray and become trapped at the neck. This is the same concern that caused the Tike Tech and Valco Baby jogging strollers recall earlier this month. Unlike the previous recall, this time there have been 4 reports of strangulations and 5 reports of entrapments with injuries including cuts and bruises.

Quattro and MetroLite Stollers and Travel Systems

The recall involves about 2 million strollers distributed between November 2000 and December 2007. The name “Graco” appears on a label on the stroller tray and headrest. Model numbers are printed on a label at the lower portion of the rear frame, just above the rear wheels or underneath the stroller.Go to CPSC.gov or Graco’s Recall Information Page for a complete list of recalled models. Stop using recalled strollers and order a repair kit from Gracobaby.com right away. If you are using the stroller as a Travel System, with an infant car seat attached, you can safely continue to do so, but order the repair kit for future use.

Caution for all pre-2008 Stollers?

In 2008 a new voluntary industry standard was developed to address the hight of the snack tray from the seat bottom. This standard requires larger openings that prevent infant entrapment and strangulation. With this second recall in one month, it is probably a good idea to examine any stroller manufactured before 2008 for this defect. I wonder if we’ll see a series of recalls like we saw with drop side cribs.
