When I was approached to review the Bumbo Seat and Play Tray, I thought to myself that it was perfect timing. My little one is about 5 months old, and not yet able to sit up on her own, but loves to be propped up seated so she can watch her brother play and be silly.
About the Bumbo Seat and Play Tray
The award winning Bumbo Baby Seat is cleverly designed to support baby in comfort, allowing them to sit up independently. Made from a single piece of latex-free, low-density and lightweight foam, the Bumbo Seat provides a snug and comfortable environment for baby to sit up for feedings, play time or quality time with the family. The Bumbo Baby Seat requires no straps or fasteners to hold babies in place, and helps them transition into sitting. It also makes the perfect baby shower gift!
The Play Tray attaches to the Bumbo Baby Seat and allows your child to keep their toys within arms reach. It helps your baby develop their important trunk muscles and improve hand-eye coordination at the same time. Toys placed on the play tray are within your child’s reach so for the first time they can sit up and play. This gives your baby a great feeling of independence. It also gives parents a break because babies want to stay in the Bumbo Seat longer.
Bumbo Seat Features
- Sits securely on flat surfaces
- Made from non-toxic polyurethane
- Easy to clean

- Holds up to 22 lbs.
My Experience
I was excited to put my little one in the Bumbo for her to be able to get in on the action and play with her big brother. As you can see, she was having a great time playing, and he was really enjoying feeling like he could finally play with her, hence the car that I couldn’t get him to keep out of the picture!
I really liked the play tray that we used as an accessory, as it gave her a place to play with the toys. I did find the try a little bit difficult to snap together, as the directions clearly state to take the tray off before placing baby in the seat, meaning it has to be placed back on after baby is in the seat. I found if I didn’t take the tray off first, it really was more difficult to get baby out of the seat.
Instructions for Use
You may remember that the Bumbo was briefly recalled in 2007. The warning label on the Bumbo was apparently not big enough, as it was being used inappropriately leading to serious injuries. The Bumbo now clearly and largely boasts a new warning label and states, “Do Not Use On A Raised, Elevated Or Uneven Surface, As A Car Seat, In A Bath, Or In Other Water. Do Not Use Until Baby Is Able To Support Its Head. Never Leave Child Unattended.” It is truly important that you heed the warnings, and use the Bumbo only as it is intended, on a non raised surface, and please keep an eye on your little one. If you do, you will enjoy watching your baby be able to engage with older children during playtime! The Bumbo Babysitter seat is a perfectly safe, fun product for baby if it is used 100% as intended.
To Buy or Not to Buy
To Buy… I really like these two products for this stage of my baby’s development. I love that she is able to sit and play on her own. The Bumbo allows me to then have a few free arms to play with both of the children at once!
Or Not to Buy… If your baby is a wiggly one, and doesn’t like the seated position, this may not be for her.
Shop! The Bumbo Baby Sitter is available in a five colors and retails for $42.99. The Play Tray is sold separately for $10.99. Both are available from a variety of retailers nationwide and online, including Amazon.
