Twin Girls Colorful Butterfly Birthday Party

by Kate on July 31st, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  All Things Birthday, Birthday Parties

Danielle of A Few of My Favorite Things put together a beautifully colorful and festive birthday party to celebrate her twin daughters’ first birthday. There are so many wonderful details and thoughtful touches that it’s hard to feature them all!

The invitations set the tone with a darling photo of Gabrielle and Alaina in tutus and butterfly onesies. The invitations were designed by Double E Design.

The party was on the rooftop patio of the family’s apartment building and the weather cooperated – what a beautiful setting. Danielle added lots of color and feminine flair with homemade Pom Poms based on a Martha Stewart tutorial.

The food and sweets spread looks amazing and Danielle was inspired by cupcake displays and sweet tables by The TomKat Studio. (Aren’t we all?) Danielle’s cupcake stand from was Wilton and she added colorful polka dot ribbon to add interest and color. The cupcakes were decorated with personalized cupcake toppers from Lil Boo and Co. There were also picks with mini pictures of the girls made by Peanut and Pumpkin Designs with actual rhinestone and little poms on them – so many darling details!

The desert table also featured a gorgeous cake from Flourpatch Bakery and yummy looking homemade marshmallow pops. Delish!

If you read A Few of My Favorite Things, then it’s no surprise that Alaina and Gabrielle were dressed to the nines for their big party. For the cake smashing eating they wore birthday “1sies” with matching hats and tutus. The birthday shirts and hats were made by Peanut and Pumpkin Designs. (Yes, the same woman who created the food picks!) The tutus were from Tutu Cute Designs.

The lucky little ones who attended the party went home with personalized buckets filled with butterfly crayons and other fun craftiness. The buckets had 3D butterfly tags from Mary Had a Little Party.

I’ve happily bought several pairs as baby gifts for friends and am psyched to be a ShooShoos Mom to spread the love with a summer style giveaway.

Superfly Kidz Superhero Cape Giveaway

by Kate on July 30th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  All Things Birthday, Birthday Gifts, Giveaways

I have been a fan of Superfly Kidz custom superhero capes for quite some time. (In fact, I think I first blogged about the Etsy shop about a year and a half ago.) A Superfly Kidz cape is completely custom and surprisingly affordable, making it an obvious choice for the Birthday Gift Shopping Guide.

Custom Handmade Capes

Each of my kids has a Superfly Kidz cape and they are the perfect way to add some superhero fun into any afternoon. When you order a cape you decide the Cape Color, Design and Initial Colors and the Design Shape. My daughter’s cape is perfectly girly: Pink with a Purple Flower Design and Pink Initial. My son’s cape is more traditional superhero colors: Blue Cape with a Silver Circle Design and Red Initial.

Shop! Check out Superfly Kidz on Etsy and custom order a superhero cape for $16. You can add a Matching Superhero Mask for $3. Planning a superhero themed birthday party? Superfly Kidz offers a bulk discount so you can treat every kid to a party favor they’ll actually use.

Win! A Custom Superhero Cape from Superfly Kidz!

How to Enter: Visit Superhero Kidz and check out the design options. Leave a comment with the color cape and design you’d like on a cape if you win.

Bonus Entries - Valid only after completing first mandatory entry. Please leave a separate comment for each you do.

Giveaway ends August 13. Open to US residents only.

Disclosure: Thanks to Vibrant Trains for providing the prize for this giveaway. I was not compensated for this post and purchased the capes because I think they’re cool.

Dinosoles: Shoes for Kids Who Love Dinosaurs

by Kate on July 29th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  All Things Birthday, Birthday Gifts, Clothes, Reviews

My son received a pair of Dinosoles for his birthday last year and we love them so much that they made the Birthday Gift Shopping Guide as a top pick for little dinosaur fans. And, let’s face it, little dinosaur fans are every where these days so Dinosoles are a safe but totally original birthday gift idea.

About Dinosoles

Here at Dinosoles, we want dinosaurs to roam the earth again. Pick your favorite dinosaur and put them on your feet. We have a variety of styles and prices that will make Moms and Dads “roar” with joy.

Dinosoles are fun AND comfortable, as they explore their habitat…looking for their next “happy meal”. As one of the favorite topics in schools, dinosaurs have a worldwide, timeless appeal that will never diminish. Dinosoles create “show-and-tell” on your feet.

Dinorama Shoes

My son roams the earth in Dinosoles Diorama Shoes. He likes that the shoes light up when he walks. I like that the shoes seem comfortable, hold up extremely well to a crazy 3 year old and actually look quite nice with his clothes.

The shoes are very detailed and have fun features from toe to heel to sole.

Top Birthday Picks

Here are some other styles that make my son “roar!” And while your first thought might be that Dinosoles are just for boys, we know lots of girls who would love some dinosaur shoes.

Dinorama Triceratops Sneaker

Stegosaurus X-10 Shoe

T-Rex Dinorama Sneaker

Shop! Dinosoles are available at Dinosoles.com and a much larger selection is on Amazon. Prices range from $20 for Dinosaur Slip On Shoes to $40 for light up Dinosuar Sneakers. Most Dinosoles come in sizes ranging from Toddler 7 to Child 2.

Disclosure: I was NOT provided any shoes or any other form of compensation for this post, but if Dinosoles gets into social media I hope they’ll get in touch! This post contains affiliate links – a great way to support your favorite blogger.

New, Less Restrictive VBAC Guidelines

by Kate on July 29th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Parenting

Please welcome a new contributor who’ll be sharing her brilliant mind with us every so often here on The Shopping Mama. Malia is a fellow Air Force mom who recently moved to Florida (near me!). She blogs at The Jack Effect, a blog about babies, cloth diapering and all that her young son brings. Please welcome her, chime in here and check out her blog (where you can find a more in-depth post on the new VBAC guidelines).

***

Like a lot of women, when I reached month seven or so of my pregnancy I started to consider how the little guy was going to get from point A (my tummy) to point B (my arms). The doctor thought there was a chance I would need a c-section if he was a big baby, so a c-section was definitely on my radar. I wasn’t excited about the idea, but I was open to whatever needed to happen for a healthy baby. By the end I was ready to just schedule an appointment and get my baby out whatever it took! After 12 hours of labor and an amazing nurse and doctor I got my baby and no c-section. It wasn’t until I was home recovering that I realized how blessed I was to have a vaginal birth.

Not every mama gets the chance to have a vaginal birth when she hopes. For thirty-one percent of women in the US the end result of pregnancy is a c-section (in 2007). For some this is their birth plan and what they wanted or needed for their own or their baby’s health. For others it is a disappointment, an ending not at all in their birth plan. For these women, a recent update to the Vaginal Birth After C-Section (VBAC) guidelines published by The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) may be welcome news.

New ACOG Guidelines on VBACS

ACOG’s newest guidelines stress that VBACs should be an option for most women including those with one or two prior c-sections, carrying twins, or arriving to deliver where an emergency surgical team in not immediately available (such as a small hospital).

ACOG has put the emphasis back on mom’s choice—as long as it’s an informed one.

ACOG hopes their new guidelines will help reduce the number of c-sections over all. In the 70’s our mothers helped make VBACs more commonly accepted and VBAC rates rose until the mid 90’s. Then, in the past half a decade, there has been a dramatic decline in VBACs. This decline has been linked to restrictions from insurers and hospitals afraid of being sued and decisions made by moms worried about the risks of VBAC. Pregnant women and doctors are worried that the surgical scars from a c-section could increase the risk of uterine rupture and bleeding, something that can be extremely dangerous for both mom and baby. Additionally, while a vaginal delivery after a c-section has been shown to be safer than a repeat c-section, a c-section after a failed VBAC is more dangerous than a scheduled c-section. It may help women to know that ACOG has found that there is less than a 1% increase in uterine rupture in VBACs and that the majority (60-80%) of women trying for vaginal birth after c-section succeed. I’m not sure I would be willing to take the risk, but I’ve never dealt with c-section recovery.

What do you think? Would you consider a VBAC? Do the new guidelines change your opinion?

Mickey Mouse First Birthday Party

by Kate on July 28th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  All Things Birthday, Birthday Parties

For her son’s first birthday party Nicole planned a party fit for a mouse – Mickey Mouse!

The star of the party (other than the birthday boy!) was probably the awesome birthday cake. Nicole make the cake using fondant and an idea from the 2008 Wilton Cake Decorating Yearbook. He also had a little smash cake that apparently he wasn’t into. (He was probably distracted by the awesome two-tier fondant cake!)

Most of the party decorations were from a local Disney store and can be purchased online. The birthday and big brother Mickey Ears were also from the Disney store and the Mickey pinata from from CelebrateExpress.com.

The birthday boy got a lot of Mickey-themed presents including a couple ride on toys. Looks like fun!

This party was submitted for the All Things Birthday event. We’d love to share your party, too. (And to say thanks, you get FIVE BONUS Entries into every All Things Birthday giveaway!)
