Sky High Scoops Counting Game Review + Giveaway

I know I’ve mentioned before that one of my favorite times of the day is the one on one time with my son after my daughter goes to sleep.  We spend that short half hour or so playing games, reading books or doing puzzles that we can’t do when the nosy 18 month old is around. One game we’ve been playing a lot at night these days is Sky High Scoops from Learning Resources.

About Sky High Scoops

We all scream for ice cream! Dish up hours of delicious learning and fun with this colorful count and stack game. How high can the scoops be stacked? Listen carefully for the color and number of scoops to stack next, but look out. The wrong move can topple the whole sundae! Be the first player to stack all of your scoops (plus the whipped topping) and win the game. Includes 16 colorful plastic ice cream scoops (2 each of red, orange, yellow, blue, green, brown, pink and white). This game reinforces color recognition, number sense, counting and fine motor skills (stacking). Features talking dish and sound effects, with adjustable volume.

Playing the Game

The rules of Sky High Scoops are very simple and straightforward – perfect for the recommended players aged 3 and older. You divide the fun scoops of ice cream among the players and try them on the ice cream dish based on what the talking ice cream dish says to do when you push the “Scoop” button. For example, it may instruct a player to “Add one blue scoop” or “Remove two scoops” or “Triple Scoop” where the player can add any three scoops. The object of the game is be the first player to stack all your scoops without the ice cream toppling over.

Even though the concept is simple, the game has some good benefits for little players. The 8 different color scoops reinforce color recognition, the adding and removing of scoops help with numbers and counting and set the groundwork for basic bath skills. And, trust me, stacking the scoops isn’t actually all that easy and it requires fine motor skills. When we play just my son and I it’s actually hard for one of us to win because the scoops usually topple over before getting rid of all of our scoops. The game is recommended for between 2 and 5 players, so it becomes much easier to win as you add more players.

The ice cream scoops are the perfect size for little hands to grasp them. The ice cream dish is a solid base to build upon and there are three “Scoop” buttons so every player can easily push one. The only slight problem with the ice cream dish is that the speaker is on top of the dish so when you stack the scoops it becomes a little harder to hear the instructions. But, the volume is adjustable so we just turn it up all the way.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… Sky High Scoops is a fun, easy to play game that helps to reinforce important skills and lay foundation for others. Because the game is so straightforward in strategy and the rules are simple, it’s a great game for a group of kids to play together.

Or Not to Buy… My only minor complaint is about the volume on the ice cream bowl and that it gets a bit stifled when your pile ice cream scoops on top.

Shop! Sky High Scoops is $24.99 and can be purchased directly from Learning Resources and specialty toy stores nationwide.
