After my daughter got a horrible diaper rash a couple months ago, I was on the hunt for some alternatives to make her disposable diaper experience more pleasant. The worst part of her rash was changing her diaper as our traditional diaper wipes were obviously causing her pain – she was wincing when I wiped her bum. I had heard of Bummas cloth baby wipes but never realized how much I wanted them until my daughter had that rash.
About Bummas
Bummas are small soft, luxurious baby-sized cloths made especially for drying baby bottoms, as well as blocking those surprise squirts. And with a little douse of water, they can also replace wet wipes for clean up of sensitive bums. They are small enough to conveniently carry on the go and durable enough to wash over and over again and won’t pill shrink or fade.
Keep Bottoms Clean & Dry
Bummas come in packs of 10 wipes made of 100% cotton woven velour terry cloth. The wipes are very soft – although I did notice the white wipes are softer than the colored wipes. At 5 by 7 inches, Bummas are smaller than traditional disposable wipes. Obviously you can reuse them, but you do have to be more mindful of what you’re doing when cleaning a dirty bottom. They are less thick than a traditional wash cloth, but are still absorbent and the size and thickness makes them more practical than a wash cloth in my mind. I stashed the set of Bummas in the basket where the diaper changing stuff to be armed and ready for diaper changes.
When my daughter’s bottom is even the slightest bit irritated, I wet a Bummas to clean and wash her bottom. When her bottom is healthy and rash-free, the Bummas wipes are useful for making sure her bottom is completely dry before putting on a diaper. If you have a baby in diapers, I’m sure you know keeping the diaper area dry is helpful in preventing diaper rash, so the cloth wipes are a good tool in keeping a bottom rash-free. Obviously, one of the best parts about the Bummas wipes is that you can simply throw them in the washing machine. They hold up to washing very well and don’t shrink or get misshapen.
One unexpected benefit and use of Bummas in our house is as pretend diapers for my daughter’s doll.
To Buy or Not to Buy
To Buy… Bummas are a great addition to the diaper change basket as they are useful whether or not your child wears cloth diapers or has a rash. I like knowing my daughter’s bum is completely dry before putting her diaper on and that I can just toss these in the wash to reuse them.
Or Not to Buy… I do wish they were a little wider – maybe square – for when I’m washing a dirty bum. I also find the plain white cloths softer than the color cloths.
Shop! Bummas Cloth Wipes are $16.99 for a set of 10 wipes and can be purchase on the Bummas website. They are available in four color combinations to match baby’s nursery.

June 10, 2010We have a little boy and they do the trick to stop any “surprises” and really do dry the area well. I do wish they were a wee bit bigger too.
