Avalanche Fruit Stand Game Review + Giveaway (Closed)

by Kate on May 23rd, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways, Reviews

I don’t know about you, but I find it a great challenge to find educational games that entertain my son that don’t bore me to tears. I think a lot of moms can probably relate – it’s hard to get a 3 year old to sit still and truly engage in a task or game fore very long. Especially if he thinks it involves some sort of “lesson” – nothing sends him running faster. I’m always looking for games and activities to do at home that are an effective blend of fun and learning and Learning Resources is a wealth of options for educational toys and games for classrooms – and the home.

The Learning Resources Mission

Since its founding in 1984, Learning Resources’ continues to be guided by its mission to develop quality educational products that make learning exciting for children of all ages and abilities. The Company strives to create hands-on products that build a concrete foundation of skills through exploration, imagination and fun. Its steadfast adherence to this mission is evidenced by hundreds of award-winning products and the thousands of children, teachers and parents who enjoy them.

Avalanche Fruit Stand Game

We’ve had the pleasure of playing with a couple games from Learning Resources. The first I’m going to introduce is Avalanche Fruit Stand. Here’s the game description:

Are you steady enough to work at this fun fruit stand? Spin the wheel, then use the jumbo tweezers to pick or place fruit.

  • Develops fine motor skills, especially the all–important pincer grasp that prepares children for handwriting
  • Reinforces color and fruit vocabulary
  • Perfect for teachers, specialists and occupational therapists
  • Includes 40 fruit counters (5 different fruits), 2 jumbo tweezers, picture spinner, and adjustable cardboard fruit stand/storage box measuring 6″L x 9.5″W x 13.75″H

Develop Fine Motor Skills

My son can recognize every letter, but when it comes to trying to write them it’s an entirely different story. Now, this is a big generalization on my part, but I find that my son’s fine motor skills are behind many of his girl classmates. I really think this is one area where boys are a little behind their preschool girl friends. Basically, that’s a round-a-bout way of saying I was excited about this game as soon as I saw that it was good for helping to develop fine motor skills. The major task of the game is to use the pincer grasp to clamp tongs around small pieces of fruit. It was really easy to teach my son the correct way to hold the tongs because there are indented areas for his fingers. To my surprise, he picked it up and was good at using them the very first time we played the game.

Learning Sportsmanship

So it turns out my son is not the best sport. Often when we play a game he as a total meltdown when he loses. The first time we played the game, we ran into this problem a few times because the rules say that when you remove a piece of fruit, if you make other fruit fall you have to put all yours back in the stand and start from nothing. Based on his reaction (not good!), I let him take the lead and make his own rules the first couple times we played so he didn’t have to start from scratch every time he caused an “avalanche”.

It’s so fun to see his little brain working when we play. For example, when you spin the wheel one option is to land on a number and then pick any 2 or 3 pieces of fruit of your choice. My son? He insists you have to pick the same fruit. So rather than take a strawberry and banana and apple to get himself closer to a complete collection of all five fruits, he’ll pick 3 bananas. Oh well, so he doesn’t have the killer instinct to win. We still have a great time playing the game.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… Avalanche Fruit Stand game from Learning Resources is a great way to play and learn with your pre-K kid. It’s been great at improving my 3 year old’s fine motor skills. From start to finish, the game doesn’t take too long to complete and the concept is super simple and fun. As your child’s skills improve, you can change the angle of the Fruit Stand to make the challenge of removing fruit more difficult.

Or Not to Buy… My only improvement is to change the design of the spinner. It involves a small inner circle to which the actual spinning pointer attaches but it is separate from the spinner itself.

Shop! The Avalanche Fruit Stand game from Learning Resources is only $18.99. Both Parents and Teachers can browse educational toys from subject, category and theme.

Win! The Avalanche Fruit Stand Game!

All Aboard the Dinosaur Train: World Tour Week

by Kate on May 23rd, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Blogging, Reviews

We DVR only a few shows for my son and one of them is Dinosaur Train. He loves the show and I think it’s a great choice, too. If you’re already a fan of Dinosaur Train then you’ll be psyched to learn about the brand new episodes airing this week, and if you’re new to the show the “World Tour Week” is a great time to tune in and see what it’s all about.

Dinosaur Train

I blame this PBS show from the Jim Henson Company for single-handedly turning my 3 year old into a dino-freak (and that’s not a bad thing!). Each episode includes two CG-animated segments featuring the Pteranondon family (including adopted T-Rex son Buddy) and a live action segment with paleontologist Dr. Scott. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that kids are like sponges and pick up everything and, in my book, you can’t go wrong engaging a kid’s interest in dinosaurs while teaching at the same time. I wasn’t all that surprised when my son recently started telling me stories about “therapots” (aka theropods) and explained to me what they are in 3-year old language. (I googled to see if he was right and they are, in fact, dinosaurs that walk on two hind legs.)

Like anything, TV for kids is best in moderation but if my son’s going to watch anything I much prefer it be something like Dinosaur Train where he learns about things that interest him and can, in turn, school me about all things dino. As a mom, in addition to the fact that he learns fun dino facts, I like that my son also learns nice life lessons (whether he realizes it or not). My favorite example is the fact that Buddy the T-Rex is adopted into the Pteranondon family without question. Mrs. Pteranondon says, “This is your family and I’m your mom. We may be different but we’re all creatures. All dinosaurs have different features.” I mean, really, how cool is that?

World Tour – New Episodes

Like many families, the Pteranondon family is taking off on their summer vacation. The Dinosaur Train is taking the dino clan on a world tour to meet new species, encounter new adventures in Asia, Europe and Africa and, of course, have some fun.

Here are the synopses of this week’s new episodes:

  • “Pteranodon Family World Tour;” “Gilbert the Junior Conductor” - The entire Pteranodon family embarks on a roaring, exploring, World Tour adventure! The Pteranodon family continues with Gilbert, the Conductor’s nephew.
  • “Confuciusornis Says;” “Tiny’s Tiny Doll” - The next stop on the Dinosaur Train World Tour takes the Pteranodon family to Confuciusornis Gardens, where they meet a very wise old dinosaur. During a stop on the Pteranodon family’s World Tour, Tiny accidentally leaves her beloved Tiny Doll behind in Velociraptor Valley and it takes several new dinosaurs to return it to her.
  • “Iggy Iguanodon;” “Shiny Can’t Sleep” - The Pteranodon family continues their World Tour and meets Iggy Iguanodon, a large, four-legged chap who shows them his unique way of walking. During the World Tour Shiny is homesick and having a hard time falling asleep on the train so Mrs. Conductor and Dad help her discover all of the wonderful nighttime surprises on the  Dinosaur Train.
  • “Kenny Kentrosaurus;” “Don and the Troodons” - As the Pteranodon family’s World Tour continues, they travel to Africa to meet a Stegosaur named Kenny Kentrosaurus. The Pteranodon family oversleeps and has to hurry to make another guided walk on their World Tour!

We received a screener of the four new episodes airing this week (staring May 24) and have watched them more times than I care to admit. It was a life-saver on our recent plane flights and has been my son’s number one requested show since we received the DVD. My daughter isn’t old enough yet to watch TV with any interest, but I know that girls like dinosaurs, too, so don’t shy away if you only have a girly girl.

Dinosaur Games Online

The Dinosaur Train website has several games to entertain little ones, including the brand new Dino Tracks, a pattern game where kids look at dinosaur foot prints in the mud to figure what comes next. The All Aboard game, launching soon, is a chance for your little one to be Mr. Conductor and drive the Dinosaur Train.

Watch! Whether you’re an old fan or new to the Pteranodon family, the all new “World Tour Week” episodes of Dinosaur Train that air this week are definitely worth checking out. Dinosaur Train is on during the PBS Kids Preschool Destination and you can visit PBSKIDS.org to find your local TV listings.

Disclosure: Thank you to PBSKids for providing a screener DVD for the purpose of this post.

Baby Bunch Organic Cupcakes Onesies Review + Giveaway

by Kate on May 21st, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Baby, Giveaways, Reviews

I have to admit, I am a onesie junkie! I love having onesies under my kids clothes to hide the diaper and to add a layer of protection if you know what I mean. So when I had the opportunity to review the set of Organic Cupcake Onesies from the Baby Bunch, I was happy to check them out.

About Baby Bunch Cupcake Onesies

Organic Cupcake Onesies are a recipe for a great baby shower gift, with absolutely no baking required! Each dotted Kraft paper bakery box opens to reveal four unbleached, undyed cotton onesies made of super-soft 100% organic cotton, generously sized for infants 0-6 months or up to 16 lbs. Each onesie is “topped” with a decorative element such as a fruit or flower; remove decoration before dressing baby and save or use again, along with the reusable magnetic clasp bakery box.

My Experience

The presentation of the Cupcake Onesies is perfect – the box is just too cute, and is made from recycled materials.  Each onesie has a cute  strawberry decoration on the back, which is to be removed before wearing (they simply stick on and come off easily). My toddler enjoyed playing with them in his coloring books.  Once I opened up the box and took out the little “cupcakes”, I didn’t want to undo them, they were packaged so adorably. I eventually did, and was really pleased at how soft they were.

The organic cotton definitely makes a great product even better because they are so soft and natural.  The onesies are made to fit babies from 0-6 months and up to 16 pounds. I put them on my three month old, and she definitely had room to grow, so I do believe that for an average size baby, they really will fit for the full six months.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The box of four Organic Cupcake Onesies are an adorable option to send as a welcome home baby gift. They are super soft, great quality and would be a unique gift for a new little one.

Or Not to Buy… I really have no reason not to buy this adorable set. The only think I can think of is they are a baggier fit onesie, so don’t expect a tight fitting layer, unless you have a chubby baby, which I do not.

Shop! A box of four Organic Cupcake Onesies is $39.95 at BabyBunch.com. Take a look around at some other great products for little ones, and make sure you check out the other Organic Baby Gifts, including an organic versions of the Baby Bunch.

Win! A box of Organic Cupcake Onesies!

líllébaby EveryWear Carrier Review + Giveaway (Closed)

by Kate on May 19th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Baby, Carriers, Gear, Giveaways, Giveaways, Reviews, Reviews, Spring Into Spring

One essential piece of baby gear is a baby carrier. Trust me, first baby, second baby or beyond – you really need to be hands free and nothing beats an easy-to-use versatile baby carrier. Suitable for babies from birth to 42 pounds and with the ability to convert to five different positions, the  líllébaby EveryWear is a great option.

About líllébaby EveryWear

The innovative líllébaby EveryWear carrier is the very essence of adaptability; designed to be the only baby carrier you will ever need – without any accessory purchase required. This amazingly comfortable baby carrier with a sleek and sophisticated style cuts no corners.

5 Position Carrier

  • Cradle - Use the JPMA approved Infant Insert (sold separately) to secure and support babies during the first three months of life in the cradle carry position;
  • Front Face In – Popular way to carry young babies, and additional neck support and adjustable seat size make it easy to carry babies as small as 7 pounds. And, even my big 20 pound baby likes this when she’s tired;
  • Front Face Out - When baby can support her head and wants to face forward this is a comfortable way to see the world;
  • Hip – Convert it to a one-strap hip carrier, perfect for active toddlers;
  • Back - Most comfortable for carrying bigger kids (the EveryWear accommodates up to 42 pounds) for long periods of time.

EveryWear Sport

Living in Florida, the EveryWear Sport was a natural choice for me. It’s make of a very lightweight mesh fabric without any fill to allow for breathability. The carrier is definitely much lighter than others I own, which is  a plus no matter what climate you live. The waistband is made of a traditional fabric so it doesn’t breath and isn’t as light as the rest of the carrier. The Sport is a very versatile black and grey so every one can easily wear this EveryWear.

Using the EveryWear

I have to be very upfront and admit off the bat that, for me, this was not the easiest carrier to use out of the box. I had to actually read the instructions (gasp!) to make sure I was using it right and that the straps were on correctly. (Part of that is probably my fault because I fiddled with it before actually reading first.) Anyway, once I got the hang of it, the lillebaby has become a great go-to carrier. In fact, if you’re reading this post the day it goes live, I’m probably carrying my 18 month old around airports in my EveryWear. I love the flexibility of being able to carry either one of my children front, hip or back. When my daughter is more tired and needy the Front Facing In is ideal because she feels cuddled and supported and I love that she’s close. When she’s interested in what’s going on around us and with my son, the Back Carry is ideal. For quick on and off (like running into the grocery store), the Hip Carry is perfect. (Although, it does require adjusting the strap.)

With a comfortable waist band and padded, adjustable  shoulder straps the EveryWear is comfortable for parents to wear babies. But, it is also comfortable for babies and kids. The EveryWear has an adjustable seat so you can change the width of the bottom to make sure your child is sitting in an ergonomically correct position. For older kids, that means you can ensure your child is in the “spread-squat” position that’s best for their back and spine. I was surprised at how well my 30 pound 3 year old fits in the EveryWear and how comfortable we both were.

I Am EveryWear Challenge

To gear up for spring and the summer season, líllébaby is hosting the awesome I Am EveryWear Challenge. To enter, you just have to share a photo of you and your child hitting the town (or country or hillside or beach) using the EveryWear. If you already have an EveryWear, make sure you submit your photo entries by May 30 and check the official rules for your chance to win the Ultimate On-the-Go Prize Package including the Micralite Fastfold Superlite Stroller and the new líllébaby Diaper Bags.

Here we are on the go in our EveryWear – at the beach and the air show!

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… It’s hard to argue with a carrier that does so much so well. The EveryWear also comes with a detachable and breathable mesh hood for sun protection and to enable sleep, as well as neck support for babies.

Or Not to Buy… I think because the EveryWear can do SO much, it is a bit more complicated with more straps and adjustments than other carriers that do less. I do find the back height supporting the child to be a bit lower than some other carriers – there is an infant neck support to provide more coverage.

Shop! The líllébaby EveryWear Sport is $100. The EveryWear is also available in Organic ($120) and Style ($100), which comes in Black, Red and Cocoa. The All-in-One Infant Insert is $25.95.

Win! A líllébaby EveryWear Carrier Sport!

How to Enter: Visit líllébaby and check out the EveryWear. Leave a comment with your favorite feature.

I'm Going to Pampers – Share Your Concerns

by Kate on May 19th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Life

As you know, the new Pampers Cruisers and Swaddlers with Dry Max are facing a lot of criticism from moms who believe the diapers are to blame for serious diaper rash and chemical burns. (If you aren’t familiar with this debate, read this post about the Pampers Dry Max Investigation.)

In response to the growing concern, Procter & Gamble is hosting some mom bloggers to get a behind-the-scenes look at Pampers. I feel honored to be traveling to the Pampers HQ to meet with and ask questions of the pediatricians, researchers and developers of the Dry Max diapers.

While Pampers has been extremely generous (even flying my kids to the HQ with me since my husband is out of town), I am really going with the hope that I will learn more about the diapers and the company. Frankly, I’m not sure what to think about the Dry Max debate. On the one hand, my daughter had the worst diaper rash of her life while using the Dry Max diapers. On the other, I continued using them and the rash has not returned.

I really hope to make the most of this opportunity and get some information for concerned moms (like me). Please leave a comment or send me an email with your thoughts, concerns, feedback, or questions for the Pampers Dry Max team.

Tiff from Babes and Kids will be there, too. Check out her experience Visiting Pampers before we go and check back for both of our reactions after we return.
