Destin Beach – Before the Oil

by Kate on May 4th, 2010 | 40 Comments » | In Weekly Features, Wordless Wednesday

I live less than 10 miles from Destin, home of some of the most beautiful beaches in the States (if not the world). And I’m not just saying that because I live here. It’s true. At least for now. As you know, there’s thousands and thousands of gallons of oil making its way to the Gulf Coast.

I took the kids to the beach on Sunday (May 2010) – something I hadn’t braved alone before – but I wanted to get some photos and just play on the beach. Unfortunately, the weather was not cooperating. It was overcast and very windy making the normally green-blue water look dull and gray.

Just so you know they don’t call this area the Emerald Coast for nothing, here are a few family pictures taken on the beach in July of 2008. I was 6 months pregnant and Preschool Boy looks so young!

It’s a waiting game now. The original forecast was that the oil would make landfall in our area Tuesday. Now because of the wind and weather, the latest estimate is that it will hit our beaches this weekend.

I look forward to seeing your photos.

This is one of the saddest things. It is true… all of that water is so beautiful.. or was. I can’t even fathom the wrath of all of this.

It is so very sad what is happening. Our beaches are one of our finest treasures. I’m glad that you and the kids were able to enjoy a day there before the oil hits.

we lived at eglin afb for 2 and a half years and really loved the destin area…we still have friends that live there. not only is it going to effect the animals but also the tourist season is right around the corner! the economy is crapy enough without having this make it worse.
