Destin Beach – Before the Oil

by Kate on May 4th, 2010 | 40 Comments » | In Weekly Features, Wordless Wednesday

I live less than 10 miles from Destin, home of some of the most beautiful beaches in the States (if not the world). And I’m not just saying that because I live here. It’s true. At least for now. As you know, there’s thousands and thousands of gallons of oil making its way to the Gulf Coast.

I took the kids to the beach on Sunday (May 2010) – something I hadn’t braved alone before – but I wanted to get some photos and just play on the beach. Unfortunately, the weather was not cooperating. It was overcast and very windy making the normally green-blue water look dull and gray.

Just so you know they don’t call this area the Emerald Coast for nothing, here are a few family pictures taken on the beach in July of 2008. I was 6 months pregnant and Preschool Boy looks so young!

It’s a waiting game now. The original forecast was that the oil would make landfall in our area Tuesday. Now because of the wind and weather, the latest estimate is that it will hit our beaches this weekend.

I look forward to seeing your photos.

I live about two hours north, twenty minutes across the Alabama line. These beaches have been our vaction spot or just a day trip for many, many years. Many of our friends have homes at Destin and Ft. Walton Beach. My grandson has just spend a few days during the spring holiday’s with some more of his buddies when a friends parents asked some of their sons friends to go to Destin. He has spent many days over the years in their home there. It seem that it is something each year there, storms and now Oil spill. It’s a shame that the they have been through so much disaster.

Those are some great shots. The oil spill is such a shame. I don’t even live there but my heart hurts for all the damage that is coming. :(

It is a beautiful place and I pray that it’s saved from the oil spill! It would be a shame if it were to hit Destin!
