If you’re looking for an affordable and unique way to liven up a wall, door frame, or window check out the cute fabric bunting and garland at Knotted Nest.
The buntings are made with upcycled fabrics sewn into bias tape to create one of a kind and simple decor. And, can you believe they’re only $7 for a 38 to 40 or so inch bunting?
A bunting would also be a perfect addition to birthday party decorations, and attach one to the front of a buffet table of food or drink station and it looks festive and classy with no effort. Just love these. Buntings come in color groups such as Bright and Tropical, Lilac, Blues and Pastels.
Shop! Knotted Nest buntings are $7. Contact Kristen, the seller, for custom orders with specific colors or lengths.
There’s a reason my husband calls me the mamarazzi. I love to take photos of my kids. Like tons and tons of pictures of my kids. And for good reason, they’re cute and sharing photos and videos online is a great way to stay in touch with family and friends. I have a large DSLR camera, but, let’s be honest, it is not practical to lug that thing around to soccer practice, playgrounds, the beach and every other mini-adventure life brings. A small, pocket sized point and shoot that takes quality pictures (and videos!) is a must have for mamas. Enter the Casio Exilim. With different features and functions, there’s an Exilim for every lifestyle. I received the Exilim EX-FC100 for review.
Quick note: All the photos (other than those of the camera) and video in the review were taken with the Exilim EX-FC100 High Speed Digital Camera. I didn’t edit any of them other than to label them to highlight specific features, so these are straight off the memory card pictures. (Of course, it doesn’t hurt that many of them are of beautiful scenery from our cruise!)
At only 0.9″ thin and offering a 5X zoom lens, the 9.1 Megapixels the EX-FC100 is among Casio’s premier High-Speed cameras. It can take an amazing high-speed 30 frames per-second burst rate and record slow motion videos at 1000 frames per second. You will never miss a shot again by setting a lag correction or turning on the pre-recording feature, where images are captured before the shutter is depressed fully.
There are countless features and technical specifications. I could write a whole post about the details, but I don’t really understand them. (There, I said it!) What I do understand are the functions and features I use as a mom day-to-day, and since you’re reading this blog, I’m thinking you’re looking for a review from that standpoint. So, I’m going to highlight the features I have found most valuable.
High Speed Burst: The continuous shooting feature allows you to take an amazing 30 frames per-second. The camera saves the pictures as a single file that allows you to review the pictures one by one and determine which are keepers and which deserve the trash can. Any mom can understand why this feature is great as kids are, literally, moving targets for the camera. The only problem I had with this was that some photos taken in this mode were not in focus.
HD Movie: You can shoot 1280 x 720 pixel HD movies at 20 frames per second. I love having a camera that also takes videos. While a picture may be worth a thousand words, there are some times when the actual words and movement of a child are priceless. The ability to take high quality movies on a small pocket sized camera is perfect. I did find that the image shakes when you zoom and record an object far away.
Here’s a short sample of some videos taken with the EX-FC100. Please remember my daughter is 17 months when you hear her version of the “ABCs” and at the end you’ll see how the image shakes when you zoom too much.
Slow Motion View: The “Slow” button allows you to literally view your subject in slow-mo. While watching the recording in the LCD screen, you can watch and see which image you want to keep. For example, if your kid is playing soccer, you can press the “Slow” button and record her kicking the ball. Watch the play back and pick which frame is the best picture.
Lag Correction: Another must have for moms, the lag correction makes up for the movement between when you press the button to take a picture and the camera actually records. I have my camera set to record 0.2 seconds prior to when the camera records. I know that sounds crazy, and I don’t really know how it works, but it does. You get the picture you want and not the picture of the kids stepping away from the cute post you arranged.
5X Optical Zoom: Even though it’s best to get as close as possible to images when taking pictures, that’s not always possible. So, zoom is a must. As you can see from the pictures taken in San Juan, the zoom works VERY well and doesn’t look blurry at all.
To really learn and understand all the ins and outs of photography and aperture and lighting and ISO and white balance would be lovely, but I just don’t have the time to learn all of that. The Exilim takes the guess work out of manual adjustments with the Best Shot Feature. With choices like Portrait, Scenery, Flower, Pet and Sports there are 21 different pre-defined adjustments to help you take a better picture.
I just love how easy the Best Shot feature is to use, when in Record mode, click the “BS” button (that’s for Best Shot, folks) and a screen comes up with all the options. You can get a brief description of each mode so you know what is the right option for your subject. For example, the Best Shot: Children mode provides “Enhanced flesh tones and a fast shutter speed.” Below is an example of two pictures side by side so you can see the difference in the Best Shot: Children mode.
Here are a couple more examples of Best Shot photos.
In case you do understand them, here are some camera specs:
To Buy… The Exilim EX-FC100 is a great little point and shoot with lots of bells and whistles to help you get the perfect shot. Between the Best Shot feature, Slow Motion View, Lag Correction, and the High Speed Burst, the camera is doing all the hard work and you just have to get your subject in the viewfinder. Though I didn’t mention them in the review, the camera also has all the features you expect like a timer, rechargeable battery, cord to connect to TV and computer and more. This camera seems best suited for taking true action, high speed shots, and I love having a small lightweight camera to keep in my diaper bag.
Or Not to Buy… The images can be a little unstable and shaky even with Image Stabilization. (A good example at the end of the video.) And I found some of my High Speed Burst photos to be out of focus and blurry.
Shop! The Casio Exilim EX-FC100 estimated retail price is $249. It’s available in white (silver, really) and black on Amazon.

The mom of three behind Citrus Clothing says, “Your kids are cool… dress them that way.” And I agree! After trading in late night concerts and dirty martinis for pizza and juice boxes, Molly Helbing created Citrus Clothing so kids can reflect some modern style and edge with a good dose of fun.
I firmly believe that we do not have to give up that edgy side of ourselves and dress our kids in (gasp!) powder pink ballerina bears and fuzzy blue duckies. Citrus Clothing was formed out of the desire to create a fun, fresh and high energy company that will appeal to those who are looking to add some fun and funk into their kids wardrobes.
We received several pieces of clothes from the Girls Collection for Toddler Girl. She has been wearing the Bossy dress, Smarty Pants tee and Party Girl tank. My first impression was that the images on the website don’t do the clothes justice. The images on the clothing are certainly cute but there’s some detail that you can’t see on the website. For example, the party girl on the teal-blue tank is glitttery, in a perfectly subtle way. Another great bonus for girls is that each item comes with a coordinating hair clip. You can see the awesome crystal clip that came with the Party Girl Tank in the picture to the right. (Never mind that my daughter insisted on also wearing a hat.)
I love the little girl graphics on the clothing. The girl is simple and sweet and reflects the personality of the shirt. The “party girl” has a party hat on, the “smarty pants” is holding a book. And, who says a girl has to pick a chose? The prices are affordable enough that your little one have a tee to represent all the parts of her big personality.
I was concerned that the clothes may be too big for my daughter to wear now as they’re size 2 Years, but the tee and the tank fit very well and she’s typically in 18 month sizes now. (Tops are also available as a Onesie in sizes 3-6 months or 6 – 12 months.) The dress is still a bit big, but that hasn’t stopped my from dressing her in it! If you’re wondering about sizing, though, I’d definitely go up a size in the tanks and tees.
In addition to printed designed like we received, Citrus also has some appliqued tees and dresses that I adore. The Stiletto Tee is just pure awesomeness and certainly not your run of the mill kids clothes.
Mamas of boys, don’t worry! Citrus didn’t forget the little dudes. There are some great tees and tanks for boys, and if you want the scoop check out the Citrus review on Baby Loving Mama. Her boys look so adorable in their Citrus tops, including an applique tee.
To Buy… Citrus Clothing is small in size but big in personality. The tops and dresses are great quality, hold up to an active toddler and she looks cute as a button. I think the tees or tanks would be an original birthday gift – how about the The Bookworm or Smarty Pants tee with a book, or the Party Girl tank for a birthday party?
Or Not to Buy… I feel like a broken record because this is often my only complaint about a kids clothing company, but the girls collection is far more extensive than the boys. The things Citrus does offer are great so there should more off it for the boys.
Shop! Citrus Clothing is reasonably priced for a boutique as Tanks are $15, Short Sleeved Tees are $18, and Dresses are $22. Matching Karate Pants are also sold for $9 for infant sizes or $12 for larger sizes.

Last month I posted about the adorable Frances shoe in the Smaller by See Kai Run review. Looking back at the review, I can’t believe that the shoes looked slightly big on my daughter’s feet because now they seem to fit her perfectly. She wears them quite frequently because they are white and go with everything and can easily be worn with a dress or jean shorts. If you want to see them in action day to day, check out the shoes on the 365 Days of Children’s Clothes blog. See Kai Run is back at The Shopping Mama today with a great giveaway so your little one can start the spring and summer (with a great shoe) on the right (and left) foot.
The new collection of See Kai Run and Smaller by See Kai Run shoes for spring and summer 2010 are better than ever.
We’re also excited to announce a major improvement to our already fantastic footwear – Stronger Leather! Since its inception, See Kai Run has been known for extremely flexible, butter-soft shoes that are healthy for developing feet. Beginning with this collection, our new leather has over twice the fiber strength of our previous leather while retaining the great look and feel that See Kai Run customers expect. We are confident that you will love the look, feel and increased durability of our new, stronger leather.
If you’re not sure which shoe is best for your little one, check out the Toe to Toe comparison between Smaller and See Kai Run. We’ve had great luck with both and the biggest difference I notice between the two is the sole of the shoe. See Kai Run has a rubber sole more suitable for outdoor play whereas Smaller shoes have a suede shoe with non-slip pads. My daughter plays outside in her Smaller by See Kai Run shoes with no problem, but if you are trying to decide between the two and intend the shoes for outdoor wear, I’d go with the See Kai Run.
(Click the image to go to the full size Toe to Toe comparison at See Kai Run.)
Here are my top picks for this spring and summer from the Smaller by See Kai Run line. I am just dying for the gold sandals!
And, of course, the See Kai Run line has shoes perfect for warmer weather.
Shop! Browse the new arrivals for 2010 at See Kai Run. Smaller shoes start at $32 and See Kai Run sandals start at $38. There are also some great shoes in the Sale section worth a look. Receive FREE Ground Shipping to US addresses with purchase of $60 or more.

I was so excited to feature Vibrant Trains as an Etsy Shop of the Day a couple of weeks ago. Now we have the great chance to get to know Lisa – the creative and very talented woman behind the beautiful alphabet name trains.
The Shopping Mama: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Lisa: My name is Lisa Waineo, artist and owner of Vibrant Trains. I live with my husband and young daughter along the shore of beautiful Lake St. Clair, Michigan. I am an alumnus of the Center for Creative Studies – College of Art and Design, Detroit. My major was Graphic Communication and Art Direction. I enjoy painting, gardening, boating and traveling with my family and friends.
TSM: When did you start Vibrant Trains and why?
Lisa: Vibrant Trains was established a few years ago when I noticed that my hobby and passion for painting custom alphabet name trains had become more than a hobby. I had begun to receive regular and repeat orders from people who had caught a glimpse of one of my trains at a baby shower, birthday party, or family gathering. When I noticed that I was keeping very busy with orders, I felt that it was time to turn my hobby into a business and launch my website, www.vibranttains.com, with a shop at Etsy, to follow a year later.
TSM: I’m so glad I found your shop on Etsy. And any mom would be lucky to get a Vibrant Trains train at a baby shower – what a great gift! What is your favorite item to make or sell?
Lisa: Creating custom alphabet name trains for my clients is truly a joy and a great pleasure. I feel that I am very privileged and truly blessed to be able to provide my clients with something unique and creative while doing something that I feel very passionate about. Painting is my passion!
TSM: Your passion shows in your awesome attention to detail. Do you have any plans for new, additional products or business expansion?
Lisa: If the planets became aligned just so, causing money to become absolutely “no object”, I would carry through with Vibrant Trains future plans and expand my business to include a wide variety of custom hand painted keepsakes for home and garden. Once my business plan was established I would hire several gifted artists and an assistant to support me with this endeavor. A storefront along the lakeshore would then follow, offering an array of custom hand painted keepsakes.
TSM: What are some of your favorite online boutiques or Etsy shops?
Lisa: Here are just a few of my favorite shops found at Etsy: Fairyfolk, assja, woomanwoodworker, breezybrenda, pocokeco, notablenotions, stonestreetstudios, colinscreatures, julieblanchette, terrastratum, cherrylippedroses, whitneylassini, mamaa4earth, surfaceflik, happysquashtoys, atlassigns, littlebugjewelry, tracychong, eclecticpelican, bragaboutit, miketoys, paperjoy, catherinereece, to name just a few!
TSM: Wow, that is an AWESOME list of great shops to check out. If you’re new to Etsy, here’s how to find Lisa’s favorite shops – http://www.etsy.com/shop/{shopname}. Have fun browsing.
Lisa: Thank you so much for you interest in Vibrant Trains. It is truly a pleasure to work with each of my clients to create a one of a kind keepsake for their loved ones!
Connect! Vibrant Train is new to Facebook. Become a fan to see the latest designs and updates.
Shop! Vibrant Trains custom hand painted name trains are very affordable at $25 for a 5-segment train. Each additional segment is $5. To thank The Shopping Mama readers for such a successful giveaway, Lisa is offering a 10% discount when you mention The Shopping Mama on Etsy!
The opportunity to check out the spring fashion at Marshalls couldn’t have come at a better time: I received a $25 gift card to shop a few days before we left for our cruise last month. I was in the midst of a desperate hunt to find a family trip appropro-bathing suit. While I don’t think I’ve succumbed to “mom jeans”, I did need a “mom bathing suit” (read: a one-piece). So, off to Marshalls I went…
Marshalls is one of the nation’s leading off-price family apparel and home fashion retailers with over 820 stores spanning 42 states and Puerto Rico.* Marshalls offers a wide selection of current season, top quality, brand name fashions for the entire family as well as giftware and domestics for the home at prices 20-60 percent less than department stores, specialty boutiques and catalogs.
*I saw a Marshalls when we were in Puerto Rico on our cruise!
As soon as I walked in the door of Marshalls, I was optimistic that I’d be able to find a bathing suit. The swimsuit section, including one pieces, bikinis and cover ups, was right at the front of the store. (No surprise, really, considering it’s in a tourist destination at Spring Break time.) I browsed the racks and found several suits I wanted to try on almost immediately.
After my trip to LA when I learned about off-price shopping and how Marshalls is able to offer this season’s fashions at a serious discount, I wasn’t surprised to find name brands like DKNY and Speedo among the selection.
I took a bunch of suits into the dressing room and success! I fell in love with a La Blanca halter ruched bathing suit for $19.99. A bathing suit for $19.99 that made me feel like a million bucks (or at least 10 grand?) = priceless. I wasn’t familiar with La Blanca when I bought the suit, but after a little investigation, I discovered it is offered at high end department stores. I even found this suit that is very similar to the one I bought, but it costs $119 at Nordstrom. A far cry from my $19.99.
Even if you’re not in the market for a bathing suit, Marshalls offers quality, current season, on-trend designer pieces without the pesky designer price tag. The fashion experts at Marshalls have some advice on this spring’s fashion trends.
et Neutral: Banish dark winter tones and embrace soft spring colors with a neutral palette of pinks, corals, tanks and blush. To Buy… I had GREAT luck with my most recent trip to Marshalls. I went in looking for a bathing suit with a budget of $25 and I left with a gorgeous bathing suit and $5 to spare.
Or Not to Buy… Sometimes Marshalls does require more patience and a love of the hunt to find just what you’re looking for as there are just as many fashion duds are there are fashion scores. I know some people love it, but I’ve yet to be entirely converted. I rarely have the time to weed through
Shop! Have fun shopping the spring trends at Marshalls. To locate the store nearest you, visit Marshalls online.

I am a total office supply geek. In law school, I used to obsessively highlight and underline notes with 4 different colored pens and various highlighters. And, there’s just something totally relaxing about browsing the notebook and organization aisle at my favorite store. So it’s probably no surprise that I am totally into the paper products from Carolina Pad.
Carolina Pad, the industry leader in fashion school, office and organizational products, is perfect for mom! Our wide variety of products provide the perfect combination of fashion, function and affordable! Plus, they are just plain cool! Our trendy, stylish products have appeared on the hottest television shows including “Glee!”, “Desperate Housewives,” the new “90210” and “Greek.”
In honor of Mother’s Day, Carolina Pad has created two gift bundles that are available only on their webstore. Perfect for working moms, student moms, bloggers and anyone else who needs a little organization, the Carolina Pad collections are affordable and, yes, I’d say fun.
In bright colors with stripes, florals and polka dots, the Eye Candy Bundle is $10 and includes:
The expandable file is perfect for organizing receipts – I use mine for toy and gadget manuals. And, I’m a list kinda gal so I can never have too many Notebooks. The Personal Clutch is plenty big to be a makeup holder – and given that it’s made of a plastic material, it’s definitely diaper bag friendly.
In sophisticated black and white with splashes of lime green and hot pink, the Simply Chic Bundle is my favorite. The $30 bundle includes:
The Laptop Sleeve is plenty big for my laptop, but it’s thin so you can easily fit your laptop in your back pack, diaper bag or wherever you normally carry it. I love the Note Totes – they are perfect for random papers and registration forms moms are always filling out. Between mom’s morning out registration, swimming lessons and summer gymnastics classes, I have a lot of paper work to carry all around town and they can get where they need to go in good shape with a cute Note Tote. And, the push pins, small binder clips, and paper clips are reason enough to get a giant bulletin board. They’re so cute – and they work, too. Love ‘em.
To Buy… The $10 and $30 bundle price tags reflect a discount and save you some money while you get some awfully nice looking and quality products. I love the style of the Simply Chic line – you could seriously design an office around the fabulous details of the accessories (the push pins and clips).
Or Not to Buy… Unless you’re a student or specifically ask for it, a note book isn’t the most thoughtful Mother’s Day gift. Mamas, I say, treat yourself to this now and ask for jewelry for Mother’s Day!
Shop! The Simply Chic & Eye Candy Bundles are available at the Carolina Pad webstore. Carolina Pad products are also available in stores nationwide, including Target, Publix, Rite Aid, and CVS. I’ve also seen Carolina Pad products at our base exchange store.
How to Enter: Visit Carolina Pad and tell me another product that catches your eye.
Bonus Entries – valid only after completing the first required entry. Please leave a separate comment for each you do.
