Disney Social Media Moms – Day 3

by Kate on February 12th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Blogging, Life

This picture is also on the 365 Days of Children’s Clothes, but it is so stinking cute, it’s worth repeating.

day 43

Preschool Boy got a great thrill when he met and chatted up Mickey and Minnie at a dance party this evening at Hollywood Studios. After an awesome family dinner with new friends, all the conference attendees had the opportunity to ride Toy Story Mania after the park closed. We rode three times and somehow my score did not improve. Hmph.

Not surprisingly, Walt Disney World hosted an amazing event and I was really impressed with every meal and family party. We really had a blast and felt pretty special.

Before the fun this evening, I spent the day listening to inspiring speakers and meeting great blogging friends. Here’s the Whrrl from conference sessions.

Disney Social Media Moms – Day 2

I had hoped to blog and get some work done in the evenings, but I am wiped out! Totally exhausted. So, I’m taking the easy way out tonight and sharing the Whrrl story about this mornings events at the Disney Social Media Mom Celebration. First up this morning was a breakfast with marketing guru and Twitter mega-star Guy Kawasaki. He was entertaining and informative, and I admit much more enjoyable than I expected.

Next up was an event to celebrate extraordinary volunteers from across the country. Disney has declared 2010 the year to Celebrate Volunteers and they’re giving an incentive to get out and get active in your community. This year, when you “Give a Day, you Get a Disney Day.” That means, when you spend one day helping a participating charity you receive a free one day pass to any Disney park. And, of course, you get all the personal satisfaction that comes with volunteer work. It’s a pretty neat program and so far this year over 600,000 people have committed to one day of service!

We ended the evening with a dinner under the stars featuring some Disney Channel stars. Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato sang a new song for the Friends for Change campaign called “Make a Wave.”

Oh, and in between everything official, we rode the “The Seas with Nemo and Friends” no less than 3 times. Preschool Boy is a tad obsessed!

Things will be back to normal “Shopping Mama” stuff when I get home. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the updates from Disney.

Disclosure: My family and I paid to attend the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration; however, the price was discounted and we received some complimentary items to enhance the Disney experience.

Wordless Wednesday: Magic Kingdom

by Kate on February 10th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Weekly Features, Wordless Wednesday

I’m totally late and usually post Wordless Wednesday on Tuesday night, but we were figuring out the internet situation last night and I missed the chance. But, there are some photos from today that simply must be shared! So, here are some pictures from our day at the Magic Kingdom.

Getting ready for the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party!

I can’t believe how engaged and excited Toddler Girl was today. And, clearly our day at the park wore her out. This is how she fell asleep for an afternoon nap. In case you can’t really tell, her legs are crossed and up against the wall of Pack n Play.

After spending the day at the park, we attended the first event of the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration. It was very cool and very Disney! While my husband and the kids played sports at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports, I attended a press conference about new and upcoming projects at Walt Disney World and the Disney Cruise Line. I’ll post more about that later, but suffice it to say, everything looks amazing! From the return of the Electrical Parade this summer to the launch of the new Disney Dream cruise ship next year to the mega-expansion of Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom (to include princesses’ villages!)… ya, pretty amazing.

We Made It!

by Kate on February 9th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Blogging, Life

After a long day in the car I am happy to report we made it safely and happily to Orlando. Notice I said “Orlando” and not “Disney”? I made the error of telling Preschool Boy we were driving to Disney World today, so imagine his displeasure when we were actually off-site at a (completely amazing) vacation home and not seeing Mickey ir riding rides. He got over it relatively quickly, surprisingly, and was content to explore our temporary home away from home.

stroller at doorThis week we’re staying at a gorgeous vacation home courtesy of Global Resort Homes. They hooked up big time and we’re getting comfortable in a fully equipped 5 bedroom home. Preschool Boy has already proclaimed that he loves “our new fancy home.” I’m really interested in the Disney experience when staying off site – the home is located 1.5 miles from the park (not sure which park or attraction) so we’re not far.

When we arrived at the house this evening there was a twin stroller waiting from Orlando Stroller Rentals. They deliver and pick up from on and off-park locations. Isn’t that cool? It’s so freaking convenient, the stroller is nice (Baby Jogger City Mini) and we didn’t have to take up valuable trunk space bringing ours from home.

Sassy Bath Toys Review

by Kate on February 9th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Baby, Reviews, Toddler, Toys

sassy logoSassy recently redesigned and relaunched its bath toys, based on research in infant development. Each product is focused on important aspects of your little ones growth: Imagination, Exploration, Communication and Fascination.

About Sassy Bath Toys

Child development experts agree that certain elements are critical for an effective developmental toy.  You’ll find them throughout the new Sassy bath toy line:

  • Character faces: They are symmetrical, bold and organized.  Babies and young children respond best to organized images.
  • Variety: Babies have a tremendous capacity to learn; therefore, it is important to offer variety in the toys and the experiences they provide.
  • Realism: Toys that reflect the real world help baby make sense of the world around her. They open the way for conversations between baby and caregiver, which expose baby to new vocabulary.

The bath toys are divided by age so you can find something most appropriate for your child. Toys for newborn to 6 month olds focus on the senses, the 6 month toys are perfect for teaching the cause and effect of spilling and playing with water and the 9 month toys encourage imagination and creativity.

Our Experience

We had the opportunity to review two Sassy bath toys and it was hard to pick from the awesome selection of Bath Toys. Designed to inspire imagination and geared for the 9 month and beyond developmental stage, the Scrub-a-Dub Car Wash is bubbles of fun for both my kids. And, the rainbow colored Count ‘n Spell Appliques are ideal for Preschool Boy. As you know, I love to include photos in my reviews, but there was just no way to get a web appropriate photo of the kids using these toys.

sassy bath car washThe Scrub-a-Dub Car Wash is really cool! It’s a floating little island that comes with 3 vehicles that are perfect for scooping and pouring water. There’s a little track that goes around the perimeter of the Car Wash, a car wash curtain, and a little water squirter to help rinse the cars. There are two road signs on the either side of the Car Wash that change – one changes from a green “Go” sign to a red “Stop” side and the other is a changing car. It’s probably no surprise that this toy is a hit with both my kids. It’s really cool! I like the little details that make the Car Wash truly interactive and engaging. Even the bubble-looking Car Wash top has holes in it for playing and straining water. My son loves to race the cars around and through the curtain and my 14 month old enjoys pouring and pouring and pouring.

sassy baby bath lettersYou might be surprised that both kids also enjoy the Count ‘n Spell Appliques. These are obviously ideal for Preschool Boy who is working on letter recognition and phonics, but Toddler Girl gets into the action, too. She picks a letter from the tub, holds it up and says, “Aaaaaaa” (no matter what letter or number she happens to grab). The Count ‘n Spell Appliques set includes soft foam letters A to Z and the numbers 0 to 9. We have the rainbow set, but it’s also available in pink tones, and the letters and numbers have different textures to add textural interest. sassy lettersI’ve enjoyed the letters because Preschool Boy has a much longer attention span for learning when he’s playing in the tub. He doesn’t realize how much he’s learning when we’re spelling words on the tub wall.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… Sassy bath toys are incredibly affordable and definitely worth the money – the suggested retail price of the Scrub a Dub Car Wash is $10.99 and the Count ‘n Spell Applique set is $5.99. If you have an older toddler or preschool age kid, the numbers and letters are a must.

Or Not to Buy… When I asked my husband for improvements on the Sassy Bath toys he said the main problem is that the letters “show us everything our kid doesn’t know.” (See the picture of the backward R.) Helpful, isn’t he? But, seriously, the toys are a great value for the money.

Shop! Sassy’s redesigned Bath Toys are brand new and will be making the way to store shelves near you soon. The line is really extensive and there’s lots to pick from so definitely check out the Sassy website for more info. (I noticed some items from the new Sassy feeding line at my Target this weekend – Sassy Feeding review coming soon!) Keep up with Sassy on Facebook.

Kemby Sidekick Diaper Bag and Carrier Review + Giveaway (Closed)

by Kate on February 8th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Carriers, For Mama, Gear, Giveaways, Reviews

kemby logoIt never ceases to amaze me how much *stuff* we have to pack just to get out the door. I sure hope I’m not the only one who feels like I throw everything but the kitchen sink into the car just for an afternoon on the town. That’s why I get so giddy for multi-tasking products like the Kemby Sidekick. In short, the  Sidekick = stylish diaper bag + baby carrier. Crazy, right? Crazy good!

About Kemby

At Kemby, we are committed to creating smart, innovative products that enhance happy family living. Why? Because we have families ourselves. We know that “packhorse parent” feeling all too well and we want to make life easier – for us and for you. We’re constantly looking for innovative solutions that will make things simpler and more fun so we can focus on what’s important: children and happiness. And because looking good is part of feeling good, we design our products to be as beautiful as they are durable, so using them is a joy you can experience over and over again.

How It Works

Transforming your Sidekick from diaper bag to diaper bag with carrier is very easy. It’s just a matter of unzipping the top of the Sidekick, adjusting the strap to fit your waist, and inverting the pouch to reveal the carrier. It’s by far easier than some baby carriers, which is pretty impressive considering this is converting from a diaper bag. (And I hate to say converting from because it’s still a diaper bag. When in use, the carrier function in no way interferes with the size or access to the diaper bag.

kemby sidekickSidekick Details

  • Separate compartment for diapers and wipes
  • Changing pad
  • Baby-friendly fabric that easily wipes clean
  • Double side pockets, roomy enough for bottles or sippy cups
  • Insulated bottle/snack pouch
  • Wear it three ways: over the shoulder, across the shoulder or on the waist
  • Designed for use by babies with good head control, weighing up to 35 pounds
  • Measures 12″ high x 15″ wide x 4″ deep

Our Experience

The Kemby Sidekick is very easy and intuitive to use. I think it’s best suited for the average day when you’re out and about. It’s not as comfortable as other baby carriers so I don’t think it’s the best pick for a hike or day-long carrying. It’s perfect for a child my daughter’s age and size who has moments of independence and wants to walk everywhere, but tires quickly. I can quickly switch up the bag to carry her to finish our errands. It’s not intended for use until your baby has good head control and by that point you aren’t schlepping quite as much stuff so the smaller size of the diaper bag is perfect.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The Sidekick is a great, functional diaper bag on its own – the ability to carry your baby is a bonus. And, indeed, a great bonus. I’m really impressed with the compact size for all the features and storage in the bag, and obviously you save room because you don’t need to worry about packing or carrying along a separate baby carrier.

Or Not to Buy… The Sidekick won’t replace a traditional baby carrier, but it can be your only diaper bag. Even though I like the current 3 color options, I’d love to see more including one with black trim.

Shop! The Kemby Sidekick is $165 and available online and at select retailers. Act fast, shop the Valentine’s Day sale – use the code BEMINE for 20% off!

Basics by Bravado Designs Review

by Kate on February 7th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Reviews

Warning: This post is a nursing bra review so, naturally, it is chock full of boob and breastfeeding talk.

basics by bravadoWant to hear something really embarrassing? Until a couple weeks ago, I was wearing the same two nursing bras and hand-me-down nursing tanks that I started wearing when my son was born in December of 2006. And not because they were all that great. I just never placed a priority on a good nursing bra. And it showed. And sagged. And I’ve seen the error of my ways after pampering my chest with some great nursing bras from Basics by Bravado.

Bravado Designs has been making and selling high-quality nursing bras for 15 years and recently launched a more wallet-friendly and accessible line called Basics by Bravado. I was very lucky to receive one of each of the three bras in the Basics by Bravado line. The bras are sized in Small, Medium, Large, etc and not traditional bra sizes.

Basics by Bravado - Emma Nursing Sleep BraEmma Nursing Sleep Bra

It’s hard not to be too dramatic about how much I truly, truly love the Emma Nursing Sleep Bra. Because, honestly? It is awesome. Made of extremely comfortable and stretchy premium cotton, the Emma is shaped (but feels nothing) like a sports bra. There are no snaps, hooks or fasteners of any kind on the bra and it is seriously designed with comfort first. When I put this gem on (every night) it feels like wearing nothing but better. It provides just enough comfortable support to be perfect. If you’re nursing, the material has enough stretch that you just lift the bottom up or the top down to reveal your nipple.

The Emma is one of those products that I will rave about to anyone who will listen. I just love it.

Basics by Bravado - Felicity Nursing CamiFelicity Nursing Cami

One of the first things I noticed about the Felicity Nursing Tank is that it is essentially seamless (there is a one-handed hook on the shoulder strap), making it perfect for layering. I love layering with a camisole when nursing because when you lift your shirt, your belly is still covered up (and how important is that post-partum!). And the length on the Felicity is pretty good and its designed to avoid riding up. The bra area is really smooth with a sort of shelf bra, but it has more shape to it than the average tank. Like every product from the line, the material is extremely comfortable and has a lot of elasticity to it – you can definitely wear this throughout pregnancy and all stages of nursing.

Based on my traditional bra size (34C) I have the size Small and I think I might actually prefer the Medium. The Small is great but it’s pretty tight, which does help me to feel like all my bits are in place.

Basics by Bravado - Stella Nursing BraStella Nursing Bra

I think every single bra I’ve worn since I started wearing bras has been an underwire. Until the Stella Nursing Bra, which relies on the sturdy yet soft bottom band and stretchy seamless construction to keep you in place. The Stella has a one-handed clip for quick and easy nursing access. The sling that holds the shoulder strap in place when you’re nursing is different from any other nursing bra I’ve used. It’s basically a continuation of the shoulder strap – a narrow elastic band.I feared it would dig into my breast and make for some sort of double boobage but it laid off to the side and looked seamless.

Although I am used to underwire bras, I really like the Stella and wore it comfortably around town. But, I will probably stick to a more structured and shaped support bra when I wear a form-fitting shirt.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… Basics by Bravado bras are extremely soft and comfortable. The material is perfectly suited to grow and shrink with your breasts throughout pregnancy and every stage of nursing. Every woman (pregnant, nursing or no) needs an Emma Nursing Sleep Bra. The thing has changed my life and I would marry it if I could.

Or Not to Buy… I’m disappointed that Basics by Bravado is currently only available at (very) select Target stores and not sold online. Hopefully they’ll extend the line and offer online sales so everyone can check them out.

Shop! Check the Basics by Bravado Store Locator to see if the line is sold at a Target near you.

Win! Basics by Bravado is currently hosting a New Mama Must Have Sweepstakes – I love everything, so check it out!
