Review of NBC’s New Show Parenthood

by Kate on February 17th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Parenting, Reviews

parenthood tv showIf you’ve been watching the Olympics on NBC this week, chances are you’ve seen a promo for the new show Parenthood. I admit to being a TV junkie so this show has been on my radar for several weeks and I was lucky to receive  an advanced copy of the Pilot to check out and share my thoughts with you all before the show premieres on March 2.

About Parenthood

From the executive producers of the box-office hit “Parenthood,” Ron Howard and Brian Grazer (Oscar winners for “A Beautiful Mind”), and writer/executive producer Jason Katims (“Friday Night Lights”), this contemporary re-imagining of the blockbuster film depicts the colorful and imperfect Braverman family – four grown siblings sharing the headaches, heartaches, and joy of being parents.

Check out the Parenthood videos for more previews and character profiles.

The Drama in Dramedy

My initial reaction – even while watching Parenthood – is that the previews don’t really do the show justice. The previews are lighthearted and funny, and the show is pretty serious. Parts are almost depressing, actually, but in a kind of good way. I definitely got a little teary when Adam (played by Peter Krause of Six Feet Under) and Kristina (Monica Potter, who I adore) discuss a doctor’s suggestion that their son has Asperger’s syndrome. The thing that makes the scene so touching is that, as a parent, it’s easy to relate to their heartache at the idea that something might be “wrong” with their child.

Adam isn’t the only Braverman with relatable family struggles. Sarah (Lauren Graham from Gilmore Girls – LOVE her) has two teenagers – enough said – and busy mom Julia (played by yet another stellar actress, Erika Christensen) works outside the home and finds herself playing second fiddle to her husband.

To Watch or Not to Watch

To Watch… With this star-studded cast in front of the camera and the talent and experience behind the camera, Parenthood has all the ingredients to be a must-watch show. The characters are realistic and most parents will easily relate to the struggles and challenges the Braverman family faces. I’ll definitely watch or DVR it to see how it unfolds.

Or Not to Watch… If you’re looking for lots of belly laughs, this isn’t for you. After seeing the previews, I did expect more laughs, but instead its so close to reality for many families that it’s a tad depressing.

Watch! Parenthood premieres Tuesday, March 2 at 10 EST / 9 CST. Fan Parenthood on Facebook to keep up with the latest, including information on the Parenthood Project.

Disclosure: I received a DVD of the Parenthood pilot for review. I was not compensated for this post.

Sassy Feeding Products Review

by Kate on February 17th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Reviews

sassy logoI’ve really enjoyed reviewing the new and improved Sassy products. Last week, I shared our experience with a couple of the new Sassy bath products and I’m excited to tell you about the Sassy feeding products. The designs are based on infant development and are very thoughtful and, best of all, affordable.

Sassy Feeding Gear – Good Design & Safe Materials

All new Sassy feeding products are made from BPA free, baby-safe plastic for durability with fresh style and safety.   From the stage of Discovery to Independence, ergonomic designs and new features make every stage of feeding a joy for parents and their children.  Bright colors and modern shapes give these feeding products up-to-the-minute designer looks.   And high contrast colors and patterns match baby’s visual development.

Our Experience

Just in time for Disney, we received the Perfect Sized Snack Pods – a set of two containers for eating on the go. The two square containers have a swivel top that opens easily when you’re trying, but stays closed pretty well when not in use. I love that for only $4 you get TWO snack pods. The larger is perfect for Preschool Boy (although, he’s pictured below with the smaller of the two). sassy perfect size snack podsAnd, Toddler Girl could easily carry around and get snacks from both. My only issue was when she would use them, because the container just opens with no catch, her snacks often ended up on the floor.

I mentioned we took the containers to Disney, and I liked that they fit easily into my diaper bag. The simple shape makes it easy to take along, and the size is really ideal for small on the go snacks.

sassy snack pods

sassy less mess toddler spoonMy little girl loves to eat. And she insists on feeding herself. As you can imagine, this often creates a problem. Looking back, I know I was encouraging my son to use hold a spoon by the age she is now, but perhaps because she’s so eager I assume she doesn’t have the patience for utensils. But, once we received the Less Mess Toddler Spoon I realized she’s ready for the challenge. The spoon’s shape is unique and perfect for little hands and the angle helps food make its way into the mouth and not the floor. The spoons even have small holes on the spoon part which are supposed to help food stay in place.

sassy toddler spoonEven when she’s not trying to feed herself, Toddler Girl likes to clutch the spoon at the table. I think of it as her way of warming up to actually using it to eat. She’ll get there. In the meantime, Preschool Boy has also used the spoon and it is noticeably easier for him to use than regular spoons. I didn’t realize he was still struggling a big with regular people spoons until I saw him use this one.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… I am really impressed with the Sassy feeding gear we received, particularly the spoons. The all-new designs remind me (in a very good way) of popular, more expensive line making the Sassy products a real bargain for the money. The entire collection of feeding products is available in a number of colors and definitely worth a look.

Or Not to Buy… My only complaint is that small food falls out of the Food Pods when my daughter has it (my son is old enough to know better), so it may be a developmental thing more than a design thing.

Shop! Sassy’s redesigned Feeding gear will be hitting store shelves near you soon (I noticed some items from the new Sassy feeding line at my Target a week ago so keep your eyes peeled) – the suggested retail price for both the Snack Pods and set of two Less Mess Spoons is $3.99. The line is really extensive and there’s lots to pick from so definitely check out the Sassy website for more info. Keep up with Sassy on Facebook.

Wordless Wednesday: Disney Friends

by Kate on February 16th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Weekly Features, Wordless Wednesday

If I was smart I’d also have a photo of me and my new friends from the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration. But, like a mom, I took tons of photos of my children and have a grand total of 3 photos of me from Walt Disney World. And, sadly, no good photos of me and the awesome friends I enjoyed meeting.

Luckily, I have these great photos of Preschool Boy and some of his “friends” from Disney World. I only wish I had a photo of him and Graham – since the two of them were fast friends and played and danced so well together.

Ten Dollar Tuesday: Battle of the Bags

by Kate on February 16th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Shopping, Ten Dollar Tuesday, Weekly Features

Reusable shopping totes are a must have. Between the obvious benefit of using less plastic bags, these totes are so practical that they’re worth their weight in gold. I leave one in a stroller, one in my diaper bag and several in the pantry ready to grocery shop. But, there are lots of reusable shopping bags out there and they are not created equal. Here are the pros and cons of some bags I use. And, of course, each costs less than $10.

Reisenthel Maxi Shopper

reisenthel shopping bag

The Mini Maxi Shopper is from the amazing German company Reisenthel, makers of the fabulous Carry Bag – a Collapsible Bag or Market Basket.

To Buy… Reisenthel is an established company that has great products to make shopping easier and more comfortable. The Mini Maxi Shopper is large (with room for up to 5 gallons of groceries) and sturdy (can support 24 pounds). Love the clip so you can find it easily and the long straps.

Or Not to Buy… The Mini Maxi comes with a small bag for storage, but it is separate from the actual bag, and it doesn’t fold quite as small as some others. At $9.50, it’s a tad more expensive than the others.

Envirosax

envirosax bag

The Envirosax Shopping Tote is the original designer reusable bag. Available in hundreds of fashionable and colorful fabrics, Envirosax are available to buy in sets of 5 or individually.

To Buy… Envirosax are the only bag I’ve used that have an integrated storage option; they fold up quite compact and clip shut with attached snap. The styles are awesome and quite varied – there are even designs for kids. Most cost-effective if purchased in set of 5 coordinating totes with matching pouch, Envirosax can be an affordable and good-looking option.

Or Not to Buy… The straps are shorter on the Envirosax than the other bags.

Baggu Bags

baggu bag

Perfect for urban living, Baggu bags are available in multiple sizes to meet all your shopping needs. Made of super lightweight but durable material, the standard size Baggu can hold the equivalent of 2-3 plastic bags.

To Buy… Baggu bags are the most affordable at $8 a pop. The basic patterns and colors are very gender-neutral, if a tad boring. Love the different size bags, too, so you can carry one perfect for a quick trip to the convenient store or big trips to stock up at the grocery.

Or Not to Buy… Baggus fold up quite small, but I don’t like that the bag to contain them is separate and not attached to the bag.

Goblin Kids Review + Giveaway (Closed)

goblin kids logoAbout Goblin Kids

Born and raised in Europe, Saza Carruthers was accustomed to wooden toys and was disappointed at the lack of access to and options for similar toys in the United States. After the birth of her son and realizing a void in the market for European toys, Saza launched Goblin Kids. She says, “European toys are not only made of natural materials but also natural finishes that you can feel confident giving to the youngest of children. The toys are further crafted in a way that they encourage the imagination, creativity, and development of fine motor skills so important during each age group.

Haba Sakrada Building Blocks

haba sakrada building blocksGoblin Kids has a huge selection of Haba toys – a very popular German toy company. You can find everything from plush dolls to infant toys to blocks by Haba at Goblin Kids. We received the unique Sakrada Building Blocks Set. The set includes 10 hard wood blocks painted with natural, water-based lacquers. Unlike many block sets, the shapes are all different and anything but square.goblin kids haba toys The painting on the blocks is unique, too, and really quite beautiful for a children’s toy. I particularly like the Kaleidescope block that looks like a big jewel.

The Sakrada Blocks were picked with Toddler Girl in mind and, not surprisingly, Preschool Boy has enjoyed them, too. But, I have to say I’m delighted at how well my daughter plays with the blocks. She stacks and knocks them down and stacks again. Preschool Boy on the other hand is more interested in building actual things – so we replicate designs on the Haba box.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… Having lived in Germany for a few years, I’m familiar with many of the toys offered at Goblin Kids and am very impressed with the price! The toys are unique, very well-made and SAFE – no chemicals, plastic or the like to be found. The selection is really impressive, too, so you’re certain to find something for every kid.

Or Not to Buy… Some toys and blocks are more expensive than average or popular brands. However, they are built to last through several children.

Shop! Goblin Kids is easy, peasy to shop – you can browse by category, brand or age. The selection of toys is huge so take a look around and enjoy! The Sakrada Building Blocks are $25.19.

ERGObaby Organic Carrier & Heart2Heart Insert Giveaway (Closed)

by Kate on February 14th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways

ERGObaby logoIn honor of the holiday that’s all about love, this giveaway celebrates keeping your baby close to your heart. The ERGObaby Carrier plus the Heart2Heart insert = the only baby carrier you’ll ever need. The original ERGObaby Carrier was designed by a mom in 2003. Since then, the ERGO has become a beloved go-to carrier for babywearing mamas. The ERGO Carrier is perfect for babies who can hold their head up for extended periods of time and are comfortable in the splayed leg position and until they reach 40 pounds. The beauty of the Heart2Heart Infant Insert is that you can use the exact same ERGO carrier with your newborn baby.

About the Heart2Heart Insert

Our innovative design promotes healthy maturation of the spine by supporting the pelvis, hip joint, and leg position rather than putting a baby in a compromising sitting or hanging position before the spine is ready. It has extra cushions at the back and bottom to support the natural curvature of a baby’s developing spine. The ERGObaby Infant Insert heart2heart also supports the safety of the baby’s head and neck in this critical stage of development. Thanks to the ERGObaby Infant Insert heart2heart and Carrier in combination, parents can carry their newborn close to their heart so they can remain attentive to their baby’s needs and at the same time continue daily activities.

Technical Difficulties

by Kate on February 13th, 2010  |  5 Comments  |  Blogging

I just want to write quickly to apologize for the technical difficulties on The Shopping Mama today. What a disaster! Seriously. So freaking annoying. Apparently my account was disabled (without warning) for abuse related to spam comments. I’m still not sure if it received obscene amounts of spam or was sending spam or what.

In any case, I’m working with my hosting company to resolve the issue to allow you to comment. This blog isn’t much fun without the ability to comment!

I have a big giveaway that is supposed to go live tomorrow (Sunday), but I won’t post it until this issue is resolved. And, due to today’s problems, I’m extending the Macy’s giveaway.

Thanks for sending me emails and tweets to let me know The Shopping Mama was all kinds of crazy. I appreciate your help and patience!
