After a couple months of good sleep in our house, a new round of sleep issues has emerged. Just when I thought having two kids who sleep through the night meant I was in the clear, Preschool Boy has a couple habits that are a tad troublesome: Night Terrors and coming into our bed at night (which I’ll post about later).
Night Terrors
Now that Preschool Boy has pretty much given up the nap (UGH!), he goes to bed quite easily around 7:30. Several nights a week he “wakes up” crying an hour or two after going to bed. He’s not really awake even though he’s sitting up, or even walking out of his room, but he is crying uncontrollably and sometimes calling out for me or my husband.
The first couple times it happened, I got totally freaked out because he wouldn’t talk or respond to me and just kind of starred into space sobbing. I asked him repeatedly, “What’s wrong? What’s wrong?” and was totally weirded out that he just sat there crying and didn’t answer me. After this happened a couple times, I figured the best approach is to ignore him until he falls back asleep or go to him and lay him back down in his bed. He’s had episodes like this the past couple of nights and while I’m used to it, it has my husband a little worried.
Night Terrors Defined
Following a couple quick searches on the internet, I’m pretty sure he’s having Night Terrors. From WebMD,
The sleep disorder of night terrors typically occurs in children aged 3-12 years, with a peak onset in children aged 3½ years.
… Night terrors occur during the transition from stage 3 non-REM sleep to stage 4 non-REM sleep, beginning approximately 90 minutes after the child falls asleep.
Night terrors are distinctly different from the much more common nightmares, which occur during REM sleep. Night terrors are characterized by frequent recurrent episodes of intense crying and fear during sleep, with difficulty arousing the child. Night terrors are frightening episodes that disrupt family life.
An estimated 1-6% of children experience night terrors. Boys and girls are equally affected. Children of all races also seem to be affected equally. The disorder usually resolves during adolescence.
My son recently turned 3 so he’s a few months shy of the “peak onset” and, dear god, I hope we have some resolution before he’s an adolescent! It goes on to say that children may have an episode or two a week for several weeks. But, this has been going on for longer than a couple weeks – and he cries nearly every night. I’m also surprised by the low percentage of children who suffer night terrors. Does that mean what he’s doing isn’t really a Night Terror, or is it really that uncommon?
Night Terror Causes
The description and age seem right on, but the causes suggested by WebMD don’t really fit:
Stressful life events
Fever
Sleep deprivation
Medications that affect the central nervous system (the brain)
I know he’s getting a tad less total sleep without napping, but I don’t think 12 hours of sleep a night is really sleep deprivation. He’s not sick or taking medication, and he’s had no stressful life events. I hate to think that his sleep is being disrupted because my 3 year old is feeling stress. Poor thing.
From what I’ve read, there’s not much anyone can do – and I wouldn’t expect there to be a quick fix. Honestly, I haven’t really been that worried or concerned about it, but my husband started to get a little freaked out last night by some of the information we found.
Does your child have Night Terrors? And if so, what is an episode like and how long do they last? Does it sound like what I’m describing? Have you talked to your pediatrician?
I am so excited to share with you my new favorite go-to website: Zoolu! Founded by a mother-daughter team, Zoolu! is where Babies ‘R Us meets your favorite local boutique. The goal of Zoolu! is to provide a website that will SAVE parents TIME and MONEY by offering a wide range of baby products and necessities as well as fun gifts and goodies for mamas. Quality products plus competitive pricing and affordable shipping rates means Zoolu! makes mamas happy.
Military Friendly Shopping
I have to tell you part of reason I am so excited about Zoolu! is that the website is 100% military friendly and ships to families stationed overseas. A few years ago, while living in Germany living and shopping for my growing family online was often frustrating because many stores simply don’t ship to APO and FPO boxes. (APO/FPO = the on-base mailboxes your life pretty much revolves around when you are stationed overseas). And, in the spirit of full disclosure, I shared my shopping woes with Megan (the daughter in the mother-daughter team behind Zoolu!) who was also living in Germany because our husbands worked together. Megan and her mom wanted to find a way to provide the highest quality baby and mom products to shoppers stateside and overseas so they created Zoolu!
Familiar Must-Have Products
We all have our favorite, must have baby products, and Zoolu! stocks many of them at competitive prices. For me, a must have for any nursing mama is a Bebe au Lait nursing cover and Zoolu! has them. Other familiar brands with vital baby and toddler products carried at Zoolu! are Baby Bjorn, Gerber, Nuk, SwaddleDesigns and Sassy. Trust me, if you have something in mind, Zoolu! probably carries it. And, if they don’t, let them know what you’re looking for!
Personalized Gifts
While Zoolu! does offer the necessities and products you need day to day as a family, it also sells personalized products and gifts. Megan says, “Our shoppers have the added convenience of being able to order personalized gifts while shopping for the necessities… Our Specialty Gifts also bring in a variety of brands that are fun and unique and that aren’t typically found in the big box stores.” I love the Personalized Minky Blankets and Noteworthy Collections stamps.
It’s hard to find a store – online or in person – where you can buy a Bumble Collection diaper bag, a Baby Bjorn, Gerber pacifiers AND embroidered onesies for baby AND personalized note cards for mom.
Great Shipping Rates
Zoolu! truly tries to make mama’s lives easier – and affordable. They offer flat rate shipping on all orders. If you spend over $25, shipping to anywhere in the US and APO/FPO addresses is only $4.95. Spend over $75 and shipping is FREE.
Shop!Zoolu! makes shopping easy with many ways to browse the extensive product selection. You can search by category, age, price or brand. Zoolu! prices are very competitive and, of course, it’s fabulous to shop a military-friendly company.

Livie & Luca, a shoe company started by 3 moms in 2005, recently unveiled their 2010 spring and summer collection. And each pair is cuter than the next. Even considering the funky modern designs, what most appeals to me about Livie & Luca shoes is the solid construction. Unlike some flexible soled shoes, Livie & Luca are sturdy and perfect for rough and tumble toddlers and preschoolers.
About Livie & Luca
Livie & Luca baby and toddler shoe creations incorporate brightly colored leathers, bold designs and whimsical modern touches that capture the playful essence of childhood. Our comfortable shoe construction allows beginning walkers, toddlers and preschoolers to navigate playgrounds, city streets and dirt pathways with style and ease.
Barcelona Boys Shoe Review
We received a pair of the Barcelona leather sandals for Preschool Boy. After what seems like years of wearing the same shoe size, his feet have finally hit a bit of a growth spurt so I ordered a size up to make sure he can wear them this summer. They are a bit big, but he has insisted on wearing them anyway. They look great with pants, but I know they’re going to be over the top cute with shorts this summer.
The design is so classic and European and grown up (like I picture George Clooney wearing these), and I love that about them. The leather is really soft and such a dark brown that it’s almost black. The bright green stitching adds a touch of whimsy and youthfulness to them. The shoes close with a single velcro closure on the side, and Preschool Boy mastered it right away. The sole is very sturdy and solid, and you can’t tell how flexible the shoes are just by looking at them. And, anyone with young kids running around will tell you a mix of sturdy and flexible is just what you need.
Adorable Spring / Summer Collection
The new shoe designs for spring and summer feature bright colors and designs for girls and modern twist on classics for boys. Here are a cute of my favorites.
To Buy or Not to Buy
To Buy… One of the best things about Livie & Luca shoes is the original designs. The handcrafted leather shoes are literally beautiful. The leather is very soft for comfort and the soles are flexible yet supportive.
Or Not to Buy… I have absolutely no complaints about the shoes, design or fit. I think the price tag might turn some folks off (the Barcelona pair is $45.50), but use the generous Shopping Mama exclusive discount and save 20%!
Shop! Visit Livie & Luca to shop the latest designs (and you have to love that 10% of all online sales are donated to charity). PLUS, use the code shoppingmama for 20% off. Shop quickly because the code expires March 1.
Disclosure: Thank you to Livie & Luca for providing a sample product for the purpose of this review. The opinions expressed here are my own and uninfluenced by receipt of product. Others may have a different experience.
Did you know The Oprah Store – yes, THE Oprah – has an exclusive line of products for babies and toddlers? Well it does, and you don’t have to be a mega-fan of Oprah to appreciate and enjoy the sweet baby gifts the store has to offer.
About The Oprah Store
“For twenty years, I’ve been saying, we need to be able to give people a place where they can get a key chain, a T-shirt or a mug, or something. This store was designed for key chains, ” said Oprah Winfrey. So, while the store may have been designed with key chains in mind, it now boasts over 900 products ranging from Oprah souvenir items, to African art to adorable baby goodies.
Great Baby Gifts
We received the O Baby Blanket and an animal bib for review. From the moment the box arrived, it had a distinctive and upscale feel. The gifts were inside a green box (Oprah’s favorite color, I do believe) and would be perfect for gift-giving as is. Once I opened the box, I found the blanket and bib snuggled together with an O Baby logo ribbon. The presentation was seriously top-notch. It’s comforting to know that if you order something online from The Oprah Store to be sent directly to the recipient that they’ll get a great looking gift and not something tossed together without a care.
O Baby Blanket
The O Baby Blanket is seriously one of the softest, most luxurious feeling blankets I’ve never touched. I really wish it came in my size. The blanket is made of 100% polyester (who knew it could be so soft?) with a satin border. At 32 inches square, it’s a great size for a baby blanket – though, sadly, not big enough for me. We received the blanket in the soft yellow, but it’s also available in blush, light blue and white.
O Baby Animal Bib
The sweet O Baby Animal Bib features an embroidered animal and the words “O baby!” I love that the words are a subtle nod to Oprah so your little fan doesn’t look like a walking billboard. The bibs are available in yellow giraffe, blue elephant and green crocodile and the size and round shape is good for young babies. I think the O Yuck and O Yum bibs are too cute, too.
To Buy or Not to Buy
To Buy… O Baby products from The Oprah Store are great baby gifts for uber-Oprah fans and those who are just fans of babies. The designs are classic and the quality is exceptional. When ordering online, the presentation is perfect for gift giving.
Or Not to Buy… The O Baby products are a tad on the expensive side (but the Blanket is currently on sale making it VERY affordable).
Shop! Visit The Oprah Store to check out all the great baby gifts, baby clothes and toddler clothes (I just love this 3-Button Swing Cardigan for Toddler Girl). The O Baby Blanket is regularly $38, but is currently on sale for only $22.80 – at that price, grab one or two to keep for a go-to baby gift. The O Baby Animal Bib is $12. Take advantage of an exclusive offer through February. FREE SHIPPING with no minimum purchase! Just type in Mother247 at check-out.

On our recent trip to Walt Disney World for the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration, we had the amazing opportunity to stay at a beautiful Orlando-area vacation rental home from Global Resort Homes. The experience, our first in a vacation home, was quite different (in some really good ways) from staying at a Disney resort hotel.
Orlando Vacation Home Rental
There are obviously many differences between staying at a hotel and a vacation home. First and most obvious is the size difference. Hotel rooms, even at the more luxury hotels at Walt Disney World, are only about 800 square feet – one room, one bathroom. I often feel cramped and claustrophobic as soon as the bags are unloaded. On the other hand, a vacation home has a living room, kitchen, separate bedrooms and bathrooms. In other words, you have plenty of space to relax and put your feet up even after you unpack.
A Comfortable Home
I admit to being a tad apprehensive about staying at a vacation rental home. This was our first experience staying in a rental home as a family and it was our first time to Disney not staying at a resort hotel. One of my fears was that it I would feel uncomfortable and not quite “at home” in someone else’s house. From the moment we walked in the door to the spotless and tastefully decorated home, I was comfortable and my apprehension was gone. Honestly, I kind of imagined it might feel like staying at a relative’s house where everything is nice and comfortable but you feel like you’re walking on eggshells and you can’t really relax. Thankfully, I was wrong. The decor is so neutral and attractive that it’s really comfortable. It looked like what I wish my house looked like and we just made ourselves right at home.
Room to Relax (and Save)
For our family with young kids one of the absolute worst parts about staying at a hotel is trying to get the kids to go to sleep. We’ve swapped war stories with other parents about hiding in the bathroom after putting the kids to bed so they won’t see us and get distracted. And, even if you stay out of sight, a single room is simply not conducive to multiple sleep schedules, bedtime routines and getting a good night’s sleep. At our vacation home, each of our kids was in their own bedroom. Putting them to bed was almost as easy at it is at home, and our toddler really got into the idea that he had his own new bedroom for the week.
I feared we might miss out on some “Disney magic” staying off-site, but I have to tell you we really didn’t miss anything.
Rental Home vs. Disney Hotel
We’ve been to Walt Disney World twice as a family. The first time we stayed on site in a Disney “moderate resort” and on our recent trip we stayed in a vacation home located several miles from Walt Disney World. While Disney does have a lot of free transportation between parks and resorts, we just found it easier to drive our car every day to the different parks while we stayed at the resort. So, the transition to staying off-site and driving to the park every day was not difficult for us. The drive from our rental home to each park was about 10 minutes. It was really convenient, and the roads are well marked to get you where you want to go.
Granted, staying off-site will require a car of some sort, so if you fly into Orlando you would need to rent a car. Another downside is that you have to pay to park at Disney when you are not staying at a Disney resort. The Windsor Hills resort where our home is located does offer a shuttle to Disney parks, Universal and SeaWorld for a fee, but we did not use this service so I can’t speak to its value.
Another major consideration is food. If staying off-site you are not eligible to purchase the Disney Dining Plan. However, you do have a fully equipped kitchen so you can buy, store and prepare your own food. The first night we arrived at the house we stocked up on some basics at the local grocery store. We ate breakfast at our home every night, had fresh baked cookies at night and could have easily cooked every meal there. The stainless steel kitchen appliances were awesome and there was literally every single gadget, pot and pan you would need to prepare meals.
Why Global Resort Homes?
About Global Resort Homes
Since 1993, Global’s mission is to set a new standard of quality in the Orlando Disney vacation home market and maintained a distinctive level of service for homeowners and their guests.
Global has continued to grow and evolve with the changing times and continues to be at the forefront of the vacation home industry in both vacation home rentals and real estate sales. Today, Global’s team of over 50 professionals maintain and manage over 200 resort homes and Global’s Real Estate team consists of over 35 Real Estate professionals. Global’s dedication and commitment to its guests and homeowners remains and will continue to be the very essence of the company.
Our Global Resort Home Experience
Our experience with Global Resort Homes was nearly flawless. And, in Orlando where location and proximity to the attractions is key, Global Resort Homes has an assortment of properties near Walt Disney World, SeaWorld and Universal. From 2-bedroom condominiums to spacious 7-bedroom homes, Global Resort Home properties are located in resort communities that offer added benefits and amenities to enhance the experience.
Windsor Hills, the resort community where we stayed, has many amenities.
2 bedroom condos, 2 & 3 bedroom townhomes, 3 to 6 bedroom homes
Homes have private screened swimming pool and spa
Townhomes have small pool
Master suite with king or queen size bed and TV
Master bathroom with garden tub and separate shower
Fully equipped kitchens with breakfast area and formal dining area
One or two living areas with TV, VCR or DVD player
Washer and dryer
Homes available with game rooms that include billiards, table tennis and air hockey
Homes available with play stations for kids
Our main issue with the home had to do with our kids “exploring” the home, which wasn’t childproofed. Within 5 minutes of arriving, my daughter pulled a place mat from the beautifully set dining room table and broke a plate and bowl in the process. Global Resort Homes was very gracious about it and said “No worries, things happens.” In fact, when things break (within reason), Global Resort Homes replaces them at no charge to the guest.
Tour Our Home
Overall, I highly recommend Global Resort Homes. We had a beautiful home and certainly didn’t feel like anything was missing from our Disney experience. What we lacked in proximity to the parks, we made up for space, comfort and excellent sleep for all of us.
To Rent or Not to Rent
To Rent… We had an amazing experience staying in the Windsor Hills resort. I think the vacation rental home is perfect for families – large and small – the separate bedrooms, kitchen and amenities are invaluable. It’s a great option for traveling with extended family, too, as you can all be together but have your own bedrooms and private space. And, how much fun would it be to rent a large home and split the cost with another family?
Or Not to Rent… You’ll have to rent a car to get around the area and will have to pay for parking at local theme parks and attractions. Vacation homes lack the convenience of hotels (no concierge, maid service, etc), but they do have the comfort of home and that’s worth a lot when traveling as a family.
Rental Rates: Vacation rentals with Global Resort Homes start as low as $79 a night. 2-bedroom condominiums in the Windsor Hills resort are available from $122 per night, and 5 bedroom homes like the one where we stayed are available for $278 a night.
Plan Your Vacation Today! If you have any questions about Orlando Vacation Homes with Global Resort Homes, call 877-582-6967 or visit Global Resort Homes online.

I have this ongoing issue when shopping for new baby presents: do I give something cute, unique and not as practical or something purely functional that’s really not fun? I get really excited when I come across a product that actually falls into both categories, like the Baby Bunch. Designed by a husband and wife team specifically to combat the bland baby gift, the Baby Bunch mixes form and function and is a creative, practical gift for new babies.
When presented with the opportunity to review a Baby Bunch, I wanted to accept to be able to share more information about the product. But, without a newborn in the house, it simply didn’t make sense for me to do it. Luckily, I knew just the person: my friend Monica, who (at the time) was weeks from delivering her daughter. She received the Baby Bunch Medium in Pink to review (and went into labor the next day! So consider yourself warned that the Baby Bunch may induce labor).
Medium Baby Bunch
Monica’s Experience
When I first opened the package of the Baby Bunch Bouquet I was so excited to take a closer look. The packaging was just too adorable, and what was inside was even better. The bouquet really looked like a real bunch of flowers, it was impossible to tell which flower was what clothing item. I was torn because I wanted to leave it like a cute bouquet, yet I wanted to open each “flower” and see the little pieces. I made myself wait a few days and had it displayed nicely, just as if it was a real bunch of flowers.
After I decided to open each bud, I could tell the quality of the knit of each piece was really nice. The bunch came with 2 pairs of socks, a bib, an onsie, a hat, and a t shirt. Each piece was very soft, and a nice gentle color of pink that will go with many outfits. My only complaint is perhaps having two onesies instead of a t shirt, as for a newborn, in my opinion; onesies are the way to go. The sizing says 0-6 months. I immediately dressed my 10 day old daughter in the onesie. It was a bit big, but not too big to wear under an outfit. She will certainly be able to wear it for some time. I had a bit of trouble getting the hat to go back to the proper shape after washing it. But once I sat and played with it for a few minutes, I got it back to the right shape.
I would definitely keep this product in mind when sending a newborn gift to a friend. Especially to someone out of town, as it’s nice to send flowers, but this is so much more practical, but just as pretty. Overall a great product and one that I will definitely consider purchasing for others in the future.
To Buy or Not to Buy
To Buy… The Baby Bunch is a great baby gift because it is both unique, adorably cute AND uber functional as it comes with a collection of newborn necessities. The quality is great and the presentation is top notch. The Baby Bunch is definitely a more practical alternative to flowers and a more creative presentation of newborn clothes.
Or Not to Buy… Many moms (like Monica) prefer onesies to tees and the Medium Baby Bunch only contains one.
Shop! The Baby Bunch offers newborn clothing bouquets in several sizes and colors. The Medium Baby Bunch is $59.95. We also love the Lollipop and Cupcake Baby Gifts, which are very budget-friendly options.

Started by a mother-daughter team to provide parents with great handmade products, Tiny Wiggles has a variety of innovative accessories for babies, toddlers and mamas. With everything from Blankets to Wash Mitts to Crayon Rolls, Tiny Wiggles has lots of great products for little ones.
Toddler Bib Review
We received a Toddler Bib for review. Tiny Wiggles Toddler Bibs are made with a fun 100% cotton fabric, backed with a terrycloth towel material, and close with a small matching snap. The bib is very thick – perfect for absorbing the inevitable mess of young eaters. The size is great for my 15 month old as it covers her entire chest. She’ll definitely be able to wear it for a long time. The size is so generous, in fact, that it would have been almost too big on her when she initially started eating solids, but she’s always been on the small size. The snap stays snapped even when Toddler Girl pulls at the bib so it’s nice and strong.
Our Toddler Bib features the Juicy Jungle print and pink terry material, and definitely one of the best things about Tiny Wiggles is that you can pick from a selection of adorable fabrics. And, because it’s made of cotton and terry it’s machine washable. If you’ve ever seen my daughter eat, you know that’s a must. The Bib retains its shape and cleans up very well.
Great Gifts
If you’re shopping for gifts, check out Gift Sets perfect for new baby gifts. And the Crayon Roll Up is perfect for a big sibling or birthday gift.
To Buy or Not to Buy
To Buy… The Tiny Wiggles Toddler Bib is a great size and I’m really impressed with the quality. It is honestly the thickest bib we’ve used, which is important for wet, messy meals.
Or Not to Buy… For US shoppers, buying from Canadian company Tiny Wiggles is a little more complicated.

The first time I saw HopScotch Tees I was hooked. The adorable custom tees feature colorful, modern graphic designs with your little one’s name. As you know, I love anything that can be personalized but HopScotch Tees take customizing to the next level and include your hometown and your kid’s year of birth. So stinking cute.
Toddler Girl received the Sugar Shop tee. The sample says, “Gigi’s Sugar Shop The cutest thing in Madison Park since 2008.” Our custom shirt turned out so well! The colors are vibrant and the cupcake looks good enough to eat. Funny story about that actually. When Toddler Girl wore the shirt out and about the other day, she received lots of compliments. But, a couple people got really excited about the new bakery in town. They were disappointed to learn the sweet shirt was about my daughter and not an actual place to get cupcakes.
I love the HopScotch Tees designs because they’re unique and plain ol’ fun. I also really like that the color combinations are not the traditional blue and pink. For example, the Sugar Shop tee has red and turquoise and brown. Love it. For a couple extra bucks, you can add a little bling to your HopScotch Tee in the form of Swarovski crystals. Toddler Girl’s tee has crystals on the cupcake and they really are a nice touch. The shirt washes really well – the crystals stay put and the colors stay bright.
To Buy or Not to Buy
To Buy… HopScotch Tees are more than the average personalized tee. The addition of the location and birth year really make them special. And, of course, the designs are fun and clever.
Or Not to Buy… There are currently 7 boy and 7 girl designs but I’d love to see more options.
Shop! HopScotch Tees start at $22 and are available in 3 – 6 month onesies all the way up to adult size XL.
Win! A personalized HopScotch Tees onesie or shirt!
