Conversation with my Daughter

15 Comments 04 February 2010

Maybe conversation is a bit of an exaggeration. I mean, she is only 14 months old. And, well, it went a little something like this:

Me: Say “mama”.
Her: Baba.
Me: Say “mmmmmaaaaaaammmmmmaaaaaaa.”
Her: Bbbbbbbbbaaaaaaaabbbbbbbbbbaaaaaa.
Me: Say “mmmooooommmmmeeeee.”
Her: Bbbaaaaaaabbbbbbbbeeeee.

Seeing as things were not going as planned, I switched it up.

Me: Say “dada”.
Her: Baba.
Me: Say “daaaaaaaadaaaaaaa.”
Her: Baaaaaabaaaaaa.

Okay. Again, not quite what I was hoping for.

Me: Say “Jack.” (Her 3 year old older brother’s name.)
Her: Baby!!

DSC_1155_1Obviously, she’s not much of a talker. At 14 months, she can say “mama” (despite being completely uncooperative tonight), baby, a weird version of yes, occasionally dada and “BEaaak” (for Jack).

I’m not really worried, but I am starting to get a little concerned. I mean, I know she’s bright and understands everything I say. But, shouldn’t she be saying a bit more at this point?

Should I worry? When did your child start to say more than a couple words?

My oldest came out talking, my son was a bit slower – much slower and my youngest was quiet because she had two older siblings talking for her. I say no worries – soon she’ll be talking your ear off!

I have a feeling when she finally does start talking she’s going to speak in complete sentences and we won’t be able to get a word in edgewise.

Still waiting for my son to get good at talking but my daughter is surpassing him at lightening speed. Just take time it will get better!

It will happen in time…then it will stay like that forever.

It’s 2nd child syndrome. My son didn’t say one word until he hit 18 months. He is now 22 months and can actually talk quite a bit if he chooses to. He just generally lets his big sister (who is a motor mouth) do the talking! ;) She’ll get there. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

I figured some of it is due to having a talkative older brother. But she definitely does her fair share of grunting and pointing when she wants something – saying a couple words would be so much easier on both of us!

Haha – so cute! Our daughter are the same age. She has Dada down pat…but Mama I don’t know. She says mmmmumumum – but that could just me ‘Yum’. Who knows!

I’m looking forward to the talking though…I think :)

Ya, ours doesn’t really say “dada” – for a while we thought she called my husband “baba” but quickly realized she calls everything “baba”!

My son is 19 months and is just now really trying to say new words. He babbles non-stop like he’s having a real conversation with us. He totally knows what he is saying! Just learned no this week. Fun times! LOL

But, he really only says – mom, dad, sissy, daisy, dog, cat, sh*it (yep…I need to watch that one!) and a few other words. Not too worried…I know he’ll explode one of these days!

My older daughter had just a few words at one and my younger daughter had about 50. My older one is now 4 and we can’t get her to stop talking!!

My son has started spouting everything under the sun and he just turned 21m. I think there’s no cause for concern at this point. If by two she’s still in the same area, then maybe bring it up to the pediatrician, but for now just have fun w/it!

i wouldn’t worry about her not having many words at this point. During these young months children vary so much in what they can and can not do and one week can make a huge difference in their abilities. As long as she is interacting with you, as she obviously is, I don’t think there is cause for alarm…and its what will eventually show her how to do it

I also wouldn’t worry! She’s young and seems to be making sounds and interacting well… my son was pretty much in the same boat and now at 2.5 he never stops talking!

even the little things our children say mean the most to us. only a parents would understand how much they do and say really affects us and makes us melt. your daughter is adorable to by the way

Oh just you wait until she does talk, you will wish it took longer! :) My daughter is 13 months and has about a 15 word vocabulary. Though some are more like sounds than words, her own way of saying things. I just love watching her learn! Isn’t it fun?
