Remember months and month ago when I first posted about my daughter’s dreadlocks? Her hair seemed to improve a bit, and the dreadlock factor was less of an issue. She still has that sweet, fine baby hair and it seems to be growing at a snail’s pace. I have to say I’m a little impatient. I know I’m lucky she has *any* hair at all, but I am still looking forward to her having real hair.
Anyway, the back of the head dreadlock is back. And it’s worse than ever. See:

I’ve tried everything that I can think of. But I’m at a loss. As you can see, nothing works. So all of you with girls out there, any suggestions?

January 29, 2010I also read that you can make your own detangling spray with conditioner and water. Might be worth trying!

January 29, 2010I’ve had very good success with ouidad products. I have a son and his hair isn’t that long yet, but my hair can get tangled pretty easily.
They have a children’s line:

Thanks for the link! I’ll have to check it out.

January 29, 2010Funny, because both of my girls have had this issue. My oldest is just 3 years, and when her hair grew long enough, I just cut that part off (I know, not what you want to hear). Now she has super pretty hair that is down to at least the middle of her back.
My younger daughter however is 19 months, and her hair is also “growing at a snails pace”. Every time she wakes up, it’s a total rats next in the back. I am able to brush it with a very fine tooth comb and water, and it fixes the ‘issue’.
This is why I love blogging…you know you’re not alone!
Yes, I must say, it’s nice that I can post photos of my daughter’s hair looking like a straight up rat’s nest and rather than shun me, you all say you’ve experienced it, too!

February 4, 2010My son (2.5 years old) has curly hair, and here’s what works for us to keep the frizzies and tangles to a minimum. Hope this is some help!
I really dig Giovanni 50:50 Balanced Conditioner. We use just that on his hair, no shampoo. For my hair, I use occasional Giovanni shampoo because mine’s just wavy, not curly, so it’s not as dry. The Giovanni is lovely because it’s organic and smells really nice — not perfumey, but fresh and natural. It doesn’t weigh the hair down, but it moisturizes really well. (I sound like a commercial!)
He gets his hair washed every other day. I scrub his scalp with my fingertips and the conditioner. I pull the conditioner through all his hair and let it soak for awhile while he plays in the bath.
Then I have a super wide-tooth comb (here’s one for instance, but you can pick them up at any drugstore) to massage his scalp and comb through his curls. That’s the ONLY time I ever comb his hair, and I never brush it. Dry combing/brushing + curls = major frizz.
I do a light rinsing of his scalp but leave the conditioner on the ends. If necessary, I reapply to make sure. That way, you don’t need a separate leave-in conditioner.
I like Jessicurl products to style. I don’t care if people make fun of my using product in a 2-year-old boy’s hair! He needs it for curl definition.
I use a little Rockin’ Ringlets followed by a dab of Confident Coils. Also natural products, also smell great. I make sure it looks like it will dry in a nice pattern and then leave it alone to air dry. As long as I don’t use too much, it doesn’t look crunchy, but if it does, you can just scrunch away the crunch with your fingers once it’s dry.
For second-morning hair, I wet it down from the sink, fluff it into place, and let it air dry. That’s it.
All right, I hope maybe that helped give you some ideas! Email me if you want me to blather some more…

February 14, 2010You could always just let it dread out. HAHA. Nothing cuter than a little one with dreads….though I get the feeling this isn’t your style, like, at all.
Try things like olive oil. That may smooth her hair out and it will be completely safe. I know it sounds weird, but you can even try beer. It won’t hurt her, just have one that is room temperature and pour it over the back of her head in the beginning of her bath then rinse it at the end. (This does WONDERS for hair).

June 16, 2010I have a son, but when I was a full time nanny for a little girl (2 years old) I would spray her hair with detangler/leave in conditioner every morning, after naps and right after bath time (wet or dry). It really kept her hair looking nice and was fairly easy to comb through.
When did I become my Mom
June 16, 2010So funny to be reading this now. My daughter is almost 2 and her hair is long enough now for me to braid. But when it was shorter… well let’s just say she was born with a FULL head of hair, but as it grew, the back would keep breaking and getting tangled just like your daughter’s!
That miiight be worse. (Think full head of curly locks, with a short nappy spot in the back/middle?)
I tried the leave-in conditioner too, and that brought a little temporary relief. Can’t wait til she uses a pillow so I can try the satin pillowcase thing!
