Finding Shopportunities at Marshalls

by Kate on December 9th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Blogging, Reviews, Shopping

Marshalls logoMonday I had the extreme pleasure of attending a very cool Marshalls Holiday Red Carpet Shopping event. The intent was to teach a better way to shop for the holidays and learn how off-price retailers like Marshalls and TJ Maxx work.

My Marshalls Experience

Allison Deyette, a well-known stylist whose appeared on everything from The Today Show to The View to Ten Years Younger, started the event by explaining us how off-price shopping works. I admit that I learned a lot and discovered I had a few misconceptions about it. Did you know that 90% of the items on the shelf at Marshalls and TJ Maxx are in season items? I didn’t. Marshalls and TJ Maxx buyers travel the world buying some of the exact same goods as department stores, but they buy smart and their good buys are passed on to shoppers.

In addition to sharing information about the off-price shopping model, Allison gave us some great gift suggestions for everyone on your shopping list. From bath products and lotions (like H20 plus and name brand frangrances) to household goods (think Le Creuset kitchenware) to toys, Marshalls truly has something for everyone on your list.

Check out my Whrrl story with some behind-the-scenes photos of yesterday’s event.

Be Shopportunistic

So, my morning at Marshalls ended with a little shopping to see what I could find in an average Marshalls. The idea was to do some holiday shopping for others, but I couldn’t resist the chance to shop for myself in peace. (Did you think I would pass on trying on clothes without a fussy kid in a stroller? Heck, no.) My splurge was $35 for a gorgeous black DKNY sweater with a suggested retail value of $89. I did get Baby Girl a pair of Calvin Klein jeans (with ruffles on the pockets!) for $7, and Toddler Boy is getting a Cars seek and find book that was $6 and a Melissa and Doug box of wood puzzles for $7.

My big score of the day? Michael Kors jeans with a suggested retail price of $109 for $20! Woot. And they are ca-ute.

Do you have a great Marshalls buy? Share your Shopportunities and see what other deals people are finding at stores near you.

To Shop or Not to Shop

No matter how well I was treated on Monday morning, the real point of the morning was to learn more about off-price shopping and share that information with you. Before Monday, I admit that I’ve not always had the patience for the seek and find that sometimes accompanies shopping at Marshalls and TJ Maxx. I also had the false sense that it was left over last year items mixed in with the random current item. But after learning about HOW Marshalls brings deals to consumers I have a renewed commitment to shopping off-price. I love finding great deals and sales and Marshalls is a one-stop shop of great finds – especially for the holidays.

Big thanks to Victoria from Rocket XL, the TJX corporation and the folks at the Marshall’s in LA for providing such a great experience to learn about Marshall’s.

Wordless Wednesday: Toddler Soccer

by Kate on December 8th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Weekly Features, Wordless Wednesday

Toddler Boy has been participating in “Mini Me” soccer for 2 – 5 year olds this fall. It’s been just as ridiculous and hysterical as you would imagine. But, as you can see, he has a blast and loves it.

Toddler Boy just needs a little reminder every now and then that the BALL goes in the net, not him.

Ten Dollar Tuesday: Teacher Gifts

by Kate on December 8th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Ten Dollar Tuesday, Weekly Features

$10 tuesdaySadly, for the majority of my holiday shopping, I wait until the last minute. I know, I know, I’m “The Shopping Mama,” but I procrastinate holiday shopping like it’s nobody’s business, especially for those tricky gifts like teacher gifts. Teacher gifts fall into the difficult category because I want to get something unique and thoughtful without spending too much money. Between multiple teacher classrooms and more than one kid in school, teacher gifts can become a big expense very quickly.  Here are some great last minute ideas for affordable teacher gifts.

Blue Tricycle Printables

Blue Tricyle is a great option for last minute gifts because they offer printables – that means you purchase the listing and are emailed a PDF document to print and prepare yourself. Pick up some quality paper at the local store, print and you have a great gift ready to go. Affordable + quick = Winner!

My favorite is the 2010 Printable Calendar for only $5! And, right now Blue Tricycle has a buy 3 for $10 sale.

Affordable Teacher Gifts Blue Tricycle

Donate a Book

affordable teacher gifts book platesI’m just in love with this idea – donate a book to your child’s classroom in honor of your teacher. Your child can help by picking his or her favorite book and it’s a sweet way to leave their mark on the classroom for years to come. Include a personalized bookplate with your teacher’s name and this gift is over the top special. I love these Teacher Bookplates from Modern Classics Kids (a set of 12 is $7). There’s coordinating stationary if your budget allows for it.

Pretty Pendant

b. gifford has an amazing selection of classy, modern and unique pendants that make an affordable and feminine gift. Very budget-friendly at only $7.99, $9.99 and $11.99, b. gifford pendants are handmade and ship in a great little gift box. There’s something for everyone, so whether your teacher is traditional, mod or into chinese sayings you’re bound to find something.

Keep Baby Protected this Winter: Baby Lua Giveaway (Closed)

by Kate on December 7th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Giveaways

dittany baby logoIt’s winter weather time – even in Florida! – and that means it’s time to bundle up and get cozy. Sounds easy enough, but mamas know better. It’s hard to dress kids, babies especially, warmly. First, there’s the challenge of getting a little one to stay still long enough to button coats and put on mittens, then there’s the issue of getting your Stay Puffed Marshmallow Baby strapped in the car seat. baby lua pink and blackAnd, don’t even start on the issue of undressing a cranky baby whose fallen asleep or needs to nap pronto. Thankfully, Dittany Baby has a great product to help a bit when it comes to protecting baby from the elements – a stylish car seat cover, The Baby Lua.

What is The Baby Lua?

The Baby Lua is a “Must Have” for any baby on-the-go.  It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for UV protection, rain protection, or you’ve got the paparazzi hot on your trail we’ve got you covered; literally.  With the Baby Lua there is no standing in the rain fussing with elastic, clips, and ties.  The Lua is quick & easy to use and can even double as a nursing cover.

Shield Baby

Made of cozy fabrics like flannel, fleece and water-resistant Nylon Supplex, baby will ride comfortably in the infant car seat with The Baby Lua overhead. The unique design allows for super quick and easy use. Just throw it over the top of the car seat, and the elastic opening goes over the handle of the car seat allowing mama easy access to the handle (and even enough room to carry the seat using the tried and true under the forearm method). For additional privacy, the closure can be tied closed.

Stylish Protection

The beautiful fabrics ensure baby is riding in style. With a variety of designer fabrics to pick from it’s easy to find something to match or coordinate with the baby’s car seat.

Stylish Car Seat Cover

Normally priced between $55 and $72.50, The Baby Lua is currently on sale for only $35. I took advantage of the Dittany Baby sale and picked up some adorable Ohio State Skid Pants for only $4.50!

Sunday Spotlight: Kensington Supply Co.

by Kate on December 6th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Sunday Spotlight, Weekly Features

If your holiday shopping list includes a stylish woman with a keen eye for detail, look no further than the beautiful jewelry of Kensington Supply Co. Designed and created by Laura Tepper in Philadelphia, Kensington Supply Co.’s beaded necklaces strike a delicate balance and achieve a modern sensibility with a vintage feel. The pieces are bold and big on style without being overbearing or intimidating.

The Shopping Mama: Tell us a little about yourself.
Laura: I live in Philadelphia with my husband, our dog, and three cats. I consider myself a “lawyer in recovery,” as I just made the career change from practicing attorney to educational fundraiser.

Aribita Senorita
Aribita Senorita

TSM: Is there a “lawyer in recovery” support group? If so, how do I sign up and will you be my sponsor? When did you start making and selling your necklaces? Is this your full time work or do you have a “day job”?
L: My main hobby has been knitting, ever since my group of college friends started the tradition of knitting each other wedding blankets, about five years ago. I didn’t even start making jewelry until July, when I was unemployed and going stir-crazy. It was too hot to knit, and jewelry was quick and easy. I made a few pieces and a friend said I should sell them at a neighborhood craft fair, and Kensington Supply Co. was born! Over the months, my pieces have become more involved and this new hobby has become a side-business that I love! My full-time position as a fundraiser at Penn Law school takes up alot of my time, but making jewelry and managing my Etsy shop feels less like a chore and more like something fun and rewarding that I’m doing just for me.

TSM: What is your favorite item to make or sell?
L: I love every necklace that I make, but these days, my favorite is definitely the “Ariba Senorita!“. It embodies all of the things I love about the jewelry that I like to wear. It’s simple, but colorful, and has a vintage feel.

TSM: What is your inspiration?
L: My main inspiration is my memories of my mother and grandmother. They were both very stylish, but had very different ideas about fashion. My grandmother liked to pick bold colors and large pieces, while my mother’s jewelry was more subdued. But both of them embodied a very classic style that I’ve tried to follow in my own fashion adventures. They taught me to make a statement, while keeping it classy. I model all of my pieces on this theory and then add a touch of fun and modernity, so that each piece has a bit of each of us in it.

On the Heath
On the Heath

TSM: Exactly! I think you strike that balance very well. (And, for the record, I wrote the intro to this interview before reading this response.) Do you have any plans for new, additional products or business expansion?
L: I would like to add some knits to my business, but it’s hard to design and make them all myself. So I’m working on that! My current plan for expansion is to get my stuff in some stores outside of Philly. (I am currently on the shelves at All by Hand in Philly and Hello Bluebird in West Reading.) I’d really like to see my stuff for sale at some boutiques in Brooklyn. I lived there for five years and credit it as the place where I found my “fashion voice.”

TSM: If money were no object what is one thing you would buy right now?
L: A brownstone in Brooklyn, with original woodwork and details that I could both restore and modernize. Think original-style chandeliers next to tangerine walls!

TSM: What’s your favorite Kensington Supply Co. for gift giving this season?
L: Not to harp on the “Ariba Senorita!” but I’d have to say that’s my number one because I can make it in so many colors. But I also love “On the Heath” because it’s made almost entirely out of vintage pieces and I make every plaid bead by hand, so you know it was made with love!

TSM: What are some of your favorite Etsy shops or online boutiques?
L: I have so many! I usually troll Etsy for jewelry-making supplies, but if I’m shopping for myself, I love the printed dresses at Betterthanjam, the cool miniature look-alikes of Philly buildings at Daymaker, the awesome book-related stuff at leahmackindotcom, and the beautifully simple jewelry that my college friend Pam makes at tartanbean.
