Mickey’s Magic Choo Choo Review

by Kate on December 18th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Reviews, Toys

mickey magic choo chooIn the words of Toddler Boy, “This is the best toy eber.” Yes, Mickey’s Magic Choo Choo is a hit with toddlers, and with solid construction and allowing easy solo play, it will satisfy parents, too.

Mickey’s Magic Choo Choo

All aboard for a magical ride! This mouske-train features two fun ways to play! In Magic Mode, this choo choo knows the way to go! Watch as the engine magically picks up and lays down the train track all by itself! In Classic Mode, you can set up the track and take Mickey for a ride while a “Choo Choo Song” plays and the whistle blows!

The Magic Choo Choo comes with a large engine, conductor Mickey, train car, 10 track pieces, and two signs.

See it in Action

Watch the video to see both the Classic Mode and Magic Mode of play. The Magic Mode is really cool – the train picks up and places two pieces over and over again for a never-ending train track. (Or at least until it runs into a wall.)

fisher-price magic mickey choo chooOur Experience

Well, you already know that Toddler Boy loves it! And, I have to say I’m impressed, too. Even my husband chimed in saying, “This thing is pretty cool.” The train car is very solid and well-made as are the track pieces. The best example I can give is that the bottom of the track is lined with a non-slip material so the train works on both hardwood / tile surfaces as well as low-profile carpet. (We don’t have any traditional carpeting – just Berber and rugs – so I can’t speak to how it works on that surface.)

Another feature that I really appreciate about the track pieces is that they are easy to put together. The pieces connect with adorable mouse ear shapes and Toddler Boy can do it by himself. He’s still mastering the ability to set the train up for “Magic” mode, but it’s made pretty easy with arrows on the track pieces. At 3 and a fan of Mickey, he’s definitely the target audience for this toy.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… I think you can get a lot of bang for your buck with this toy on Christmas morning. It’s a fun take on a classic train set and will be an especially big hit with fans of Mickey Mouse’s Clubhouse. The “Choo Choo” song is cute and the phrases Mickey says are cute play on words.

Or Not to Buy… If you’re looking for a traditional train set, this isn’t it. It’s more for Mickey fans and suggested for children ages 3 and up.

fisher-price logoShop! Prices for Mickey’s Magic Choo Choo vary widely from retailer to retailer. It was $39.99 at eToys.com (and it’s sold out) but is $74.99 at Amazon. It’s also available at retailers nationwide, so shop around!

Fisher-Price Jammin Band Musical Microphone Review

by Kate on December 17th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Baby, Reviews, Toys

Little Superstar Jammin Band Musical MicrophoneI’ve had a hard time getting excited about toys for Baby Girl this holiday season. My theory is that we’ve been through the “baby toys” before with Toddler Boy so it’s been there-done that. But, I admit to getting pretty excited about the opportunity to review the Fisher-Price Jammin Band Musical Microphone. I mean, the commercials make it seem like this is practically a baby karaoke machine. Add the fact that my little girl loves music and dancing – I had high expectations for this toy.

Little Superstar Jammin Band Musical Microphone

Come on, baby—let’s get rockin’! It’s easy and fun with this musical activity center, full of instrument play, sing-along songs and busy activities. The real working microphone amplifies baby’s voice, lights up, and even responds with encouraging phrases. Features 6 sing-along songs and 4 karaoke tunes, plus a “build a song” mode. And this band grows right along with baby. Little stars can sit and play, then move on to a stand-up performance with rewarding music, sounds and phrases resounding from the interactive microphone.

Little Superstar Fisher PricePart of the Little Superstars series of toys, the Jammin Band is intended for kids between 6 and 36 months of age. Fisher-Price says the toy can help develop fine motor skills and coordination as well as stimulate the senses. It’s easy to see how little ones are stimulated with multiple flashing lights, removable instruments, lots of buttons to push and kid-friendly music. There’s even a rolling ball on the guitar, a drum and piano keys to push and a microphone that really works. (And, yes, I’ve sung into the microphone – it’s actually really fun.)

Our Experience

The Jammin Band Musical Microphone is easy to set up and ready for play pretty quickly. I love that it has two height settings and that you can switch them very easily. You simply push in two buttons on the sides and slide it to the up position so your little one can stand and jam or down to sit and rock out. We’ve had the Jammin Band on the taller height for standing the entire time as Baby Girl doesn’t sit still for long – even for this!

jammin band musical microphone

There are two play settings, but to be honest I can’t tell much of a difference between the two. From what I understand, the “Sing Along Fun” setting is meant to play songs and your little one adds to them while playing and the “Musical Discoveries” is intended more for building your own song. When the kids are playing with it and when I was fiddling with it, I really don’t recognize a difference. But, that’s okay. The only thing I miss is that the “Musical Discoveries” setting is supposed to react to you singing into the microphone and encourage you, but it doesn’t. Doesn’t stop us from singing!

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… The Jammin Band is a fun, interactive toy for young toddlers. I like that it is fairly compact, but has wide legs so it doesn’t fall over if baby leans on it, and that it has two volume settings. At 13 months, I think Baby Girl is the perfect age for this toy, and younger babies who don’t yet stand will also love it on the lower setting.

Or Not to Buy… I have to say, I do not notice a difference between the two settings. I even switched batteries and looked for some sort of try-me setting to make sure I wasn’t missing something, but still no noticeable change.

fisher-price logoShop! The Fisher-Price Jammin Band suggested retail price is $50. But, check this out, if you buy it from Amazon in the Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging it’s only $24.99.

He Said WHAT? Toddler Talk Volume 2

by Kate on December 17th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Life, Parenting

He Said What Crazy Toddler TalkOne of these days I’m going to need to catch some of my little man’s gems on video so you can really enjoy his crazy talk in all its glory.

For now, enjoy the latest installment of He Said WHAT?

Big Helper

I asked Toddler Boy to help me carry something into his classroom this morning. He looked at me with a very serious tone, like he was helping me write the Declaration of Independence rather than carry a backpack, and said, “Yes, mama. I will help. I can do an excellent job. I AM an excellent job.”

Princess Play

This is an oldie but goodie. As part of exploring pretend play and developing his imagination, Toddler Boy often assigns the family different characters. When we went to Disney it was like heaven for him – we were different characters in his little play every day. One day while at Disney we were all princesses.  Here are the names we were assigned by Toddler Boy:

Toddler Boy: “Aurora”
My mom: “Cindawellwa”
Me: “Belle”
My Husband: “Prince Charmy”
Baby Girl: “Princess Castle Sidewalk”

Seriously, “Princess.Castle.Sidewalk.” And, if we didn’t call her that, he would sternly correct us and remind us of her proper pretend name “Princess Castle Sidewalk.”

So what crazy stuff has your little one said lately?

If you enjoyed this post, check out He Said WHAT? Volume 1.

vtech jungle gym logoMy household is all aflutter with the upcoming holidays. • Teaches your toddler letters, counting animals and objects
  • Features an LCD screen
  • Adjustable, bouncy seat with three positions to grow with child
  • Features a wide, stable base

Our Experience

vtech ride & learn giraffe2The Ride and Learn Giraffe is recommended for children between 18 and 36 months. Both my 13 month old and 36 month old are very interested in the Giraffe. The sounds are appealing to little ears and not too annoying to grown ups. My one year old daughter isn’t old enough to actually sit on and ride the Giraffe but my son (36 months) has really enjoyed it – and he’s actually just the right size. We’re still working on learning his letters so the Giraffe has been a big help in that department. And, actually, it’s been a help in his physical milestones, too, because he was really no good at riding a tricycle or pedaling a bike until playing on this.

To Buy or Not to Buy

To Buy… I have to give props to VTech on the motivation and idea behind the Jungle Gym collection – get kids moving and learning at the same time. Toddler Boy has really enjoyed the Giraffe – it’s a great go-to toy when he’s got a little energy to spare and his eyes are always glued to the LCD screen that motivates him to ride.

Or Not to Buy… It’s not the most “solid” toy, although it good quality for the price point. Also, to encourage pedaling and activity it would be good if the music stopped playing when the child stops pedaling.

Shop! VTech Jungle Gym Toddler Play Series toys are available at major retailers and www.VTechKids.com. The Ride and Learn Giraffe is $49.99 and the Bouncing Colors Turtle is $29.99.

Win! Another great toy from the Jungle Gym Toddler Play Series- the Bouncing Colors Turtle!

Writing with a Heavy Heart

by Kate on December 15th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Life, Parenting

I planned to write a post last night about our adventure at the doctor for Toddler Boy’s 3 year well child check up. In my head I was planning flippant and silly prose about accidentally on purpose lying about whether Toddler Boy is really achieving all those 3 year milestones. (Turns out he doesn’t dress himself, doc.)

As I sat down to my computer last night after Baby Girl went to bed, preparing to write my silly post, I read the news of a mother’s tragic loss. Shellie is a fellow military mom, a blogger. She found her 2 year old son at the bottom of their pool. He didn’t survive.

I’m finding this post incredibly difficult to write. There are simply no words to express how sad I am for Shellie. How my heart breaks for her. I simply can’t imagine the pain she is experiencing.

I’ve never met her. I know her through the MomDot forum. But, meeting and knowing in person isn’t important. I can relate and feel her pain because Shellie is a mother – a heartbroken mother – and I am a mother. That’s enough for me.

When I put Toddler Boy to bed last night, I laid with him for an hour. I hugged him tight, cuddled him, and loved him. I stroked his hair until he feel asleep. I needed to be with him and love him. I found comfort in the peace of my child sleeping in my arms. I hope that Shellie’s son is now at peace.

Please keep Shellie and her family in your thoughts. I hope that she and her family may find some comfort in knowing that people around the world are grieving with them.

If you’d like to know more…
