BabyHawk Review: The Cure for Common Baby Carrier

After the birth of her second child Robyn, the mama behind BabyHawk, discovered something that probably rings true with mamas everywhere: One child, plus two arms, plus one million things to do, equals me needing a baby carrier that not only matched my style but is functional and comfortable as well. Isn’t that the truth!

About BabyHawk, from the website
Our Mei Tai’s (Asian Baby Carriers) are adopted from a Chinese-inspired idea that makes holding your little one on your front, back or hip as safe, as it is comfortable. The weight distribution of our MT’s makes wearing you baby more cozy and delightful than you can imagine for longer than you can imagine! Our design is simple to let you strap on or take off your custom Mei Tai quick and easy.

As I was preparing for the ABC Kids Expo, I was stressing out about what to do with Baby Girl. I knew we’d be hoofing it all over the Las Vegas Convention Center and that I’d be talking with lots of people and using both hands to check out all kinds of products. I knew she’d be happier and probably nappier if I carried her rather than using a stroller. After admiring BabyHawk mei tai’s for a while I was thrilled to receive one in time for the Expo because I thought it’d be a great way to wear Baby Girl for, literally, two days straight.

Beautiful Carrier
I’ve been swooning over the BabyHawk since I first checked out the website. Why? Because you can desire your own carrier (how cool is that?) or pick from the great selection of in stock carriers. Each design features a colorful fabric and coordinating strap color.

Being the total dork that I am, I knew the clothes I was wearing to the ABC Expo so I picked a beautiful in stock BabyHawk that I knew would good with what I was wearing. (Okay, so I know that sounds lame, but isn’t that the beauty of the BabyHawk? They’re not bland run of the mill carrier – these have some real style so I wanted to flaunt it.) My BabyHawk has charcoal straps and Amy Butler Charcoal Imperial Fan fabric and I really can’t say enough about how lovely it is. The fabric on the body of the carrier has some sheen to it and the photos on the website don’t do it justice. It’s just gorgeous.

Comfortable and Easy to Use
The BabyHawk is basically a large square that serves as bottom and back support for the baby with long ties that wrap around mama’s waist and shoulders for a secure and comfortable hold. I really like that the straps are well padded – no skimping here as the padding is thick and stretches for a long portion of the shoulder ties.

The process of securing baby is actually pretty easy, but it does take a little getting used to. The website has detailed instructions and tips and the carrier comes with a complete booklet with photos detailing how to tie numerous front and back carries. The first couple times I used it, Baby Girl would start off nice and high and secure but a little while later she was “saggy.” Luckily, one of the coolest parts about wearing the BabyHawk at ABC was that I could actually talk face-to-face with the awesome ladies of BabyHawk to get a hands-on tutorial. They said because I’m tall I should tie the waist tie higher on my torso (actually just under my bust) to get a higher and more secure hold.

I received lots of compliments on the carrier at ABC and Baby Girl got lots of attention. I think she enjoyed the ride and napped on my front and back to prove it! Since then I’ve worn it out and about to do everything from pull weeds to grocery shop.
BabyHawk

To Buy… The BabyHawk mei tai carrier is awesome and I highly recommend it. I really put it to the test by wearing it constantly for two days and was impressed with how nice it looked, how easy it is to use and how comfy it is for mama and baby. I particularly like that you can wear it on your front and back.

Or Not to Buy… So I’ve come to the realization that no matter how padded or comfortable a carrier is your back is going to hurt a bit after carrying around 20 extra pounds for two days straight. But, seriously, I think I felt about as good as possible. I love my BabyHawk and every baby wearing mama (or dada) should have one.

Shop! Design your own BabyHawk and pick between 300 fabrics and 15 strap colors. As if that weren’t cool enough, you can even pick an extra fabric color and make your carrier reversible. In stock carriers start at $80 and the Organic collection starts at $95.

Thank you to BabyHawk for providing a sample product for the purpose of this review. The opinions expressed here are mine and uninfluenced. Others may have a different experienced.

I've been wanting a mei-tai for a long, long time, but I've been reluctant to shell out for the Baby Hawk. Maybe I'll have to save my pennies after all – I love that you can customize your own carrier!
