Murphy’s Law of the Military Spouse

11 Comments 15 August 2009

It’s a well known fact among military spouses that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong when your husband is out of town. For example, a friend of mine was recently forced to move out of her house a 4 short days before her husband returned from a 6 month deployment. The squadron and her church rallied and helped her move so it was a happy ending, and that is a rather extreme example, but it’s all part of the Murphy’s Law of the Military Spouse.

My husband has been out of town for the past week and Murphy’s Law of the Military Spouse is in full effect! Thankfully, nothing major or too traumatic. And, well, just read some of my Twitter updates from the past several days…

Tuesday: The Toilet
Thankfully, this turned out to be a false alarm and I am happy to report the toilet is working fine. I am sure it is saving the true, complete breakdown until my husband is out of town for a month.

Thursday: The BirdSadly, there is no happy ending for the bird or for me. Ew. I had to.move.the.dead.bird. Unpleasant. Blech. I get the heebies just thinking about it.

Friday: The Cockroach

I think my tweets say it all. I clearly had the last laugh and that tormenting little cockroach got what was coming to it! But, why the hell was it in the washing machine? So freaking gross. As someone on Twitter replied, “At least it’s clean.” Or, it was clean.

It’s all in a day’s work. Nothing I can’t handle, right?

Saturday: The Shower
The water in my shower will not drain. At all. Sigh…. This may be the week’s biggest challenge. Already tried Drano with no luck. What to do, what to do?

Sunday: Tropical Storm Claudette
When it rains, it pours. Literally.
Thankfully, my husband will be home tomorrow and we can face next week’s adventures together.

I think if we got a bunch of us together – we should write a HUGE, bestselling book and make lots of money for everything we've gone through. My toppers are going through a 7.9 earthquake in AK, the water pump to our home stops working (aka – no water in the entire house) and passing a kidney stone with a 6 week old baby. Love it! Wish I was still in FL so we could help each other out! Miss you!

Oh, yes, the kidney stone! I remember that one, Karen. Miss you, too!

In our house, the kids usually both get sick and some major appliance breaks. I'm semi-thankful we live on post now and can just call maintenance to come fix stuff. I'd be happier if they'd do it in a timely manner. It's a teeny post.

While my husband has been out of town, I have
    1. Gone into labour
    2. Gotten mastitis (complete with ER trip)
    3. Had a dead battery on one car while simultaneously having multiple flat tires on the other
    4. Found a Vinegaroon in our bathroom in New Mexico (google that one; those things are disgusting!)
    5. Two, yes twp, backyard snake encounters.

    So I hear you.

BTW, apparently you are friends with my friend Jennie?

@Marin – OMG, labor. That's got to be the worst thing that could happen. Did he make it home?

@Kim – My work here is done. I have freed you from the chore of laundry.

Oh! I cannot begin to think of the many "Murphy's Law of the Military Spouse" moments at our place!

I am right there with you "squealing!" about roaches! Ugh!

Just one of the many reasons that I am sooo thankful that my hubby is a retired Army aviator! :o) (ya know, besides wondering where or what mission he was in…or when he'd be home…)

    blessings & aloha!
