Dreadlocks

by Kate on July 16th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Life, Parenting

My daughter has dreadlocks. No, seriously… the hair on the back of her head is one giant clump of knotted hair. It gets nastified every single day no matter how much I comb it. Between her car seat and sleeping on her back I just can’t get that hair to be nice and sweet.

The hair on the side and top of her head is normal. Cute, even, with nice gentle curls.
But, the back of her head… This is the dreads on a really good day. Trust me, it normally looks like ONE GIANT KNOT. Ew.(Was it really necessary to watermark that photo? Probably not so much. I mean, who would steal a photo of my baby’s hair in knots?)

Can you recommend any baby safe, tear free baby conditioner? Because, really, the baby soap / shampoo combo just isn’t cutting it. I’m officially on the case and will let you know what I find.

Oh, by the way, Baby Girl is 8 months old today! And she’s finally crawling – a definite upgrade from the one-armed-belly-crawl-scoot she was rocking.

Kokopax: A Contemporary Take on Classic Products

by Kate on July 16th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Reviews

Kokopax was born in 2007 by the mother of four young kids who liked the functionality of vintage baby carriers used by her parents but not the style. In addition to the Original Baby Carrier, Kokopax also offers an adorable ring tote and baby sun hats.

About Kokopax
Contemporary simplicity is our design inspiration. Making life easier for young families is our goal. Both come together in Kokopax products, for families going places, in style.

Classic Carrier
Made with an anodized aluminum frame and funky 100% cotton canvas, Classic Carrier is designed to be worn on your back. The Carrier provides a safe and sturdy ride for baby with a 5-point harness and a ring to hold a toy or two. Between shoulder straps, a waist support, and an adjustable frame for an individual fit, the Carrier is comfortable for parents, too. I just LOVE it. And Pregnancy Magazine does, too. It recently named the Kokopax Classic Carrier the Best All Around Carrier.

Ring Tote
The super cool Blakely Ring Tote is convenience and style rolled into one good looking bag. The Tote includes a mini tote, key fob, bottle compartment and deep pockets for organizing.

Sun Hat
The Savannah Baby Sun Hat is made of 100% cotton canvas, provides generous protection and has a chin strap to keep it your tot’s head. The Hat is available in three sizes: 6-12 months, 12-18 months and 18-24 months and two unisex prints.

Baby Girl has been sporting the Savannah Baby Sun Hat, and well, so has Toddler Boy, actually. (I don’t know if it’s more disturbing that my 2.5 year old son can wear a 12-18 month old hat or that my 8 month old daughter can.) The hat is great. The material is very thick which is great because it doesn’t flop over into Baby Girl’s eyes. It’s been kind of nice having it on the big side for her, actually, because the chin strap hangs below her chin without getting in her way.

Shop! Browse and buy the Kokopax collection at www.kokopax.com. The Classic Carrier is $179.99, the Blakely Ring Tote is $79.99 and the Savannah Baby Sun Hat is $19.99.

Step2 Sand & Water Transportation Station Review + Giveaway! (Closed)

by Kate on July 15th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Uncategorized
If you have a toddler or young child you know that a sand and water table is a surefire hit. Seriously, water + sand = F-U-N. The Step2 Sand & Water Transportation Station takes it up a notch and adds some train fun to the mix. I don’t even know what math equation is appropriate to represent how my kid feels about water + sand + train. So let me just tell you that he (and I) LOVE this toy.

About Step2
The Step2 Company is known for durable and stylish children’s toys that promote role playing, motor skills, creative play development and most importantly, fun for children. Best loved for its high-quality children’s play kitchens, playhouses, outdoor toys and ride on toys, Step2 is an American toy company, and 90 percent of Step2 toys are made in the U.S.A. and headquartered in Streetsboro, Ohio.

The Step2 Sand & Water Transportation Station is a round play table that contains two compartments – one wider and one deeper – for, you guessed it, sand and water. The Transportation Station includes pieces to create a train track around the inside of the table.

I admit to being a little nervous about opening the box and trying to put it together. I made the mistake of showing Toddler Boy the box and once he saw the picture there was no turning back. Well, the assembly could not have been easier. It seriously took less than five minutes to go from box to playtime! No tools are required and setting it up is totally intuitive and very quick.
The Station comes with loads of accessories so you have everything you need to start playing right away. Included are 3 train cars, 2 boats, 3 funnels, 1 spinner, 1 paddle wheel, 1 see-saw scoop and 3 train track pieces. My favorite accessory is the the nylon cover with elastic straps that keeps the Transportation Station clean when not in use. The cover is awesome and fits snugly over the top so that no leaves, bugs or dirt get in when you’re not playing. (An optional accessory that we’re looking into buying is 42 inch Step2 umbrella to shield from the sun.)

We live in a hot (freaking HOT) climate so for the summer I’ve opted to make our Transportation Station a Water & Water table. Toddler Boy obviously doesn’t know any different so I’m sure he’ll enjoy the new element of sand when we add it this fall. He’s had a total blast making the train go around the track, filling the train cars with water, pouring out water, watching water fall through the spinner, paddle wheel and see-saw scoop. I could go on. Let’s just say he’s really enjoying it to the fullest!

The Transportation Station has been a total lifesaver and go-to toy because it’s just not feasible to get to the pool or the beach during the day by myself with two kids. It’s a great place for us to play while Baby Girl takes a nap in the morning or when Toddler Boy gets antsy in the afternoons. I love that all the different elements and included accessories keep him entertained so that he can happily play by himself (while I’m nearby).

To Buy… The Sand & Water Transportation Station is definite winner. Like I said, it’s been a real lifesaver for me in that it allows Toddler Boy to independently play while splashing and cooling off safely. And, while it is recommended for children 2 and older, I know that Toddler Boy would have loved it last summer at 1.5 (and I wish we’d had it!).

Or Not to Buy… There are bigger water and/or sand play tables out there, but this one is a nice size for 2 kids. I think with more than 2 it might get a bit crowded. (Not to mention the drama if your child is like mine and is not to into sharing.)

Shop! Purchase the Step2 Sand & Water Transportation Station for $49.99.

Wordless Wednesday

by Kate on July 15th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Uncategorized
One morning on our recent trip to California, we visited a miniature horse farm. Holy cuteness. There was even a brand new baby horse born literally 30 hours earlier.

It was a beautiful place.
And we got a great photo with the grandparents!

Dress Up Your Baby Carrier with Baby Bella Maya

by Kate on July 14th, 2009  |  5 Comments  |  Carriers, Reviews
Baby Bella Maya has some truly one of a kind gifts and accessories for babies and toddlers. My favorite and the most unique, I think, are the adorable slip covers for baby carriers. I mean, honestly, have you ever seen anything quite like them? I sure haven’t!

Front Carrier Slip Covers
Baby Bella Maya slip covers are made of designer silky woven polyester fabrics and tailored to fit a variety of front carriers, including the BabyBjorn. The slip cover includes a piece to zipper over the body of the pack and two pieces that velcro to cover the straps. I received the Slip Cover in Precious Pink to snaz up my BabyBjorn.

The slip cover came with very helpful instructions and was easy to put on the carrier. I was totally impressed that the slip cover even had openings for the little buttons on the Bjorn to secure infant legs.

I cannot even begin to tell you how much attention and how many compliments I received when wearing the Baby Bella Maya slip cover! One mama told me my carrier looked like the fanciest most comfortable thing she’d ever seen. I honestly have never received as many inquiries or compliments about any single baby product as I have when wearing the slip cover!

In addition to covering the BabyBjorn traditional, Baby Bella Maya slip covers will also fit BabyBjorn Active, Snugli comfort Vent, Infantino Eurorider and Jeep 2 in 1 carriers.

Car Seat Covers
Baby Bella Maya also offers a variety covers for infant car seats and toddler car seats. They are so fun and real turn an ordinary car seat into something totally cute. I think one of these is the perfect way to recycle or revive a hand-me-down from first to second kid car seat. And, let’s face it, they are way look way more unique and luxurious than the standard run of the mill car seat.

To Buy I think a Baby Bella Maya slip cover is a fun gift for the expectant-mama who has it all. The slip covers feel luxurious, fun and original and definitely set you apart from the crowd.

Or Not to Buy… The only negative I experienced with the slip cover was the strap covers were slightly uncomfortable the first time I attached them. If the velcro isn’t applied totally straight it creates an uncomfortable “bubble” that dug into my shoulder. I redid the velcro very carefully and that definitely helped.

Shop! Add some style to your front carrier with a Baby Bella Maya slip cover for $26. Hurry, four styles are on sale for only $10 and there is free shipping until July 31 at www.babybellamaya.com.
