My daughter has dreadlocks. No, seriously… the hair on the back of her head is one giant clump of knotted hair. It gets nastified every single day no matter how much I comb it. Between her car seat and sleeping on her back I just can’t get that hair to be nice and sweet.
The hair on the side and top of her head is normal. Cute, even, with nice gentle curls.
But, the back of her head… This is the dreads on a really good day. Trust me, it normally looks like ONE GIANT KNOT. Ew.
(Was it really necessary to watermark that photo? Probably not so much. I mean, who would steal a photo of my baby’s hair in knots?)
Can you recommend any baby safe, tear free baby conditioner? Because, really, the baby soap / shampoo combo just isn’t cutting it. I’m officially on the case and will let you know what I find.
Oh, by the way, Baby Girl is 8 months old today! And she’s finally crawling – a definite upgrade from the one-armed-belly-crawl-scoot she was rocking.

July 16, 2009LOL. My daughter had the same exact problem… curly hair. She's 3 now and she sleeps with her hair in a braid so I can brush it in the morning, otherwise I'm screwed. We use regular Pantene conditioner although you may just want to try No More Tears which is what we used before.

July 17, 2009My daughter has LOADS of long curls (she's still 1 for just one more week), and we battled the same issue. Having curly hair myself, luckily I already had experience with curly bedhead. The key (for us anyway) has been 1) a lil bit of conditioner, 2) very good rinsing ( it really helps straighten out the tangles without needing to pull on them with a comb), and 3) to use a wide-tooth comb (or pic) INSIDE the shower/bath while the hair is still very wet. After combing out smooth, comb the hair in the direction you'd like it to dry. There's no need to comb again after the shower, just let it air dry! If her hair continues to stat curly as she gets older, just remember the less you handle it, the less it will frizz!

July 17, 2009i was laughing the whole time i read this. too funny! we like the leave-in conditioner spray from target. it's just the generic brand…right next to the baby version j&j makes.

July 17, 2009The problem may be caused by the fact you're using baby shampoo/conditioner at all. Your body knows how to regulate its own oils, especially for babies. Have you heard of the No Poo movement? Maybe you should check it out and see what it does for her before buying yet another product. Also, try a satin pillowcase for her bed / satin piece of fabric on the back of her car seat.

July 18, 2009Agh – we are in the same boat with our munchking (who just turned 9 months today!). Glad to know we are not the only ones fighting the battle of the dreads!

July 18, 2009My girls have very curly hair. The oldest (3 1/2) has beautiful, long ringlets. The littlest (12 mo) has short, rough curly hair. I started using J+J No More Tangles shampoo + conditioner for curly hair and it seems to work well. It's also inexpensive, which is a plus!
Good luck!

July 20, 2009too funny that you call her little tangles – "dreadlocks" haha

July 20, 2009My daughter doesn't have curls like yours, but her hair is rope-like and extremely thick at 4 years old. The hair-brushing battles are legendary at my house!! I've found that California Baby products work the best for her hair. They sell it at Target and Babies R Us. It is non-toxic, made from mostly organic materials, and tear-free. My favorite product is the bubble bath though, cause has a wand in it for impromptu bubble blowing in the tub! Beware of Johnson & Johnson, I've read some horrible things about their stuff, like it has formeldehyde in it!
