Our house is a complete mess. Total chaos. It’s 100 times worse than our usual state of disarray that comes with a toddler and little curious crawler (and a poor housekeeper of a mama).I’m going to try to keep the kids occupied and out of the house as much as possible while the house is being torn apart and put back together, but I’m really nervous. It’s so darn hot that playing outside for long isn’t a good option, not to mention the fact that it’s just plain hard to be out and about with a 2.5 year old and an 8 month old. Do you have any ideas or suggestions for ways to keep the kids entertained and out of the way? Or maybe you can just offer some words of encouragement!
And, did I mention my mom arrives Wednesday! I just hope we have the nursery / guest room cleared by then so she has a place to sleep and put her suitcase.
Finally, I really need to look into the best way to keep our new floor clean and find some area rugs. If you have a wood or laminate floor, what do you do to keep it clean?

July 31, 2009Oooh – I bet it will be pretty. I'm curious how you will like the pergo. Is it very pricey to do, and how many square feet are you doing? Sorry for all the questions, it's just something I've thought about as well.
That's so fun that your mom is coming to visit too!

July 31, 2009I'm curious about the Pergo, too! I hope we like it. It seemed like the right buy for us with young kids. We're doing about 750 square feet and it is costing less than we thought to buy and have it installed. It's still a big chunk of change but I think it'll be worth it. Or at least I hope so!

July 31, 2009I am not sure what the layout of your house is, but you could probably gate it.. or do an artificial barrier of some sort.. good luck!

July 31, 2009As someone who is doing a remodel myself, I sympathize! It's hard to stand in the middle of all the chaos and say, "Gee, this is worth it!", but it gets better!!
As for the wood floors, I vacuum mine followed by mopping with hot water. Depending on the type of finish, you have to be careful what kind of soaps you use.

August 1, 2009I quit the vaccum then mop routine because it was too many steps and I started to avoid it. Now I'm all about my Swiffer…both of them (the dry and the wet versions). I'm able the keep them in the kitchen so I use them daily. With a toddler it's impossible to keep the wood clean…or maybe it's the husbands fault. All I know is: it's not me
I will stress mopping with the grain of the wood otherwise it will show streaks.

August 2, 2009We have wood floors in our dining room and master bedroom and I sweep it daily and vac weekly – sometimes more. We have a dog so I am dealing with a lot of fur and sand – yay!!
We have tile in the rest of the house and I use the floormate on the tile. The floormate has wood solution and tile solution but I'm too scared to get the wood floor wet. This has worked for us for at least six years. I do run a damp towel over them every now and then.
