All About Eating

by Kate on June 2nd, 2009 | 20 Comments » | In Uncategorized

A few weeks ago we started feeding Baby Girl solids. First of all, I love that it’s called “solids” when it is anything BUT solid. We started with oatmeal, very watery-milky oatmeal. At first she loved it – just couldn’t get enough. And then a week later we introduced sweet potatoes and since then she’s been totally uninterested in eating anything from a spoon. I try not to get frustrated, but it’s so weird given that initially she was very interested in and good at eating oatmeal.

So, the point of this? I forgot how much stuff you need to feed a baby. Holy cow, it’s such a process. That’s where the All About Eating series comes in. Starting June 15, I’m going to try to sort through all the stuff with product reviews and giveaways of the products that you really need. I’m most excited about some guest posts and interviews from experts who can lend some advice to those of us struggling with the best way to start solids and then provide, encourage and maintain good nutrition in our little ones.

Before the “All About Eating” series begins I need to make sure I’m on the right track. Help me out!

1. What is your must have product for feeding infants and young kids?

2. What are your questions and issues related to starting solids and providing good nutrition to your little ones?

(In case you need some extra incentive, leaving a comment on this post will earn you an extra entry into the All About Eating giveaways!)

I also agree the oilcloth type bibs with pockets are best, most cloth ones stain and w/ the oilcloth you can just wash it off in the sink right away and it's ready for another use. The exception is the over the head cloth ones my grandma makes out of regular fingertip towels, I love how they stay on and have good coverage!

I noticed alot of people can't live without bibs – well my daughter takes hers off as soon as we put it on and has since she was about 6 months old. We now feed her with just a diaper on!
She has always preferred feeding herself and so we always give her an extra spoon to play with and try to use. I really want one of the Baby Human spoons and will hopefully order one soon. We have the bowls that suction to the table and most of the time it stays on, but she can get that off as well.
I buy organic canned food and also make my own food. Now she just eats some of what we eat or I make her something extra that isn't as spicy. She loves seasoning though and prefers a little spice over it being too bland.

Plastic bowls, plates, cups and utensils are a must have for feeding little kids. I've had more than one dish broken because my kids love to throw things on the floor.

I second Capital mom: a bib with arms!!

My issues are finding variety- I don't microwave my daughter's food and I don't like a ton of processed foods [or deli meats] so I'm starting to get frusterated: what should I feed her?!

I love the Baby Dipper bowl that I recently received. I wish I had it when mine were smaller. It's great for one handed feeding or for learning to self feed.

I also would love to know ideas for feeding my toddler healthy food that he will eat. He would live on chicken nuggets!

definitely second/third the bibs. Ikea has GREAT all-upper-body bibs that keep everything dry–essential when they are reaching for the spon.

Love Sassy spoons–i think they are the best design out of the three types i've tried

Wouldn't get by feeding baby without Super Baby Foods–we use that book every day. So great! We make ALL of C's food and it is easy because of that book.

Bibs don't work for everyone, my little man just takes them off. I would have to say the bowls that suction to the table and plastic dinnerwar. I look forward to these blog posts. My son would live on bread/pasta/starches if he could. I need ideas to get him to eat better he is so picky!

I think I have tried every highchair, bib and utensils for babies with my 2 sets of twins and there aren't many items I really like. My son refuses to use any sort of bib so he eats naked but with my other kids the Mally bibs and the Bjorn soft bibs have been lifesavers. The only thing you really need when feeding kids is PATIENCE!

My must haves for feeding baby include:

Fisher-Price Healthy Care Booster Seat… portable and easy to clean!

Cloth bibs… Hubby always melts the plastic ones in the dryer)

Organic baby puffs… Baby loves to munch on these as an appetizer while I prep her meal

Baby Cubes… Great for freezing homemade baby food

    Nuby spoons… They're soft and BPA-free
